What!???

At worst, their sound is still solid....

I'm still amazed that Danny Boyle had them compose the music for the 2012 Olympic Summer games. My Brother still talks about that opening ceremony to this day.

Yeah that Olympics opening was awesome.

I still talk about it to this day - it was a seminal moment in history IMHO. I actually sat my wife down to watch it. I had never felt more national pride in my life when I watched it live.

And I Will Kiss is one of the most stunning pieces of music of all time.

I listened to Strawberry Hotel today, thanks to them sharing the album in it's entirety as a "secret" YouTube video.

Despite being one of my favourite bands, I found myself quite unexcited for this new record. There's certainly been releases before that I haven't completely adored (I still very rarely come back to Barking, maybe once every other year), just like with The Chems - though the absolute slugfest that is "And The Colour Red" had honestly stripped away any interest entirely.

I very much enjoyed DRIFT - but treat that whole boxset as a sort of continuation of the RiverRun Series; a collection of more experimental jams, spread over such a vast runtime that it's basically impossible not to find a bunch of really stellar moments. But DRIFT, to me at least, wasn't a typical Underworld album, one that features a couple of (dare I say) radio friendly singles, and a larger cohesive vibe.

So, fast forward to "And The Colour Red", which is somehow being touted as a new single. They play it at shows, it gets a music video, a merch drop with the "lyrics" front and center... I'm getting a little nervous. It's obviously my own opinion, but the track just doesn't go anywhere, say anything, DO anything. So the idea of building a record around it (which was kind of how the initial email about SH was framed - the new album featuring "And The Colour Red") was quite ominous.

All that being said. I had a really lovely time with this one. There's definitely a new sound that will take a bit of getting used to, but there was some really great stuff woven into the hour long runtime. Denver Luna I think leans a little too heavily on motifs of previous hits like Born Slippy, in quite a detrimental way as I found myself just wanting to stick on the original - and elsewhere on the album there are some very obviously recycled ideas from the DRIFT series that, while interesting to hear transmorphed into a different feeling track, again had me thinking about the originals instead of focusing on this new take. But, I was all around pleasantly surprised, and would definitely recommend a listen.

The tagline for SH is "Please don't shuffle." which is a fair ask, I do think it would make for a much worse listening experience. But it feels kind of sad that it has to be said, and while there are certainly a few tracks that blend into each other, I wouldn't say the flow of the album is any more unique, or trying to say anything all that new compared to previous records. And, to be quite honest, when I eventually pick this up on CD, though I will of course avoid shuffling, I will absolutely be hitting skip when it gets to "And The Colour Red".

Oh yeah, email subscribers got sent the link a day "early" yesterday. By the time I realised I had the email in my "Other" inbox, it was bedtime so no early listener smugness for me!
Anyway here is that "secret" video:

I'm up to track 5 and it definitely sounds like Underworld. "I was more smashed than you were".

I hear where you're coming from. But vocally I hear a resemblance to a track called Music Response. Just me?

Listening to the album again while studying made me recall I still hadn't listened to Black Poppies (Unplugged). Lovely version. Very intriguing to see it performed by recent members of the UK National Youth Orchestra (my work has taken me back to the symphony world). Also a highlight to see Drumsheds in this respect after all the videos from the Bugged Out night this weekend.

I recognize many of you may have already seen this if you subscribe to the Underworld mailing list. Still wanted to share.

Edit: Also wanted to give appreciation to the cheeky Karl cameo in the background halfway through.

That would have blown my mind. If I had a mind.
"We going up!" and then pogo for the stars
"why yes, yes you are crazy and I love you for it!" Whirly
