Hi ChemBros,

I've been watching some Chemical Brothers' live gig youtube videos when they end the gig with The Private Psychedelic Reel, I noticed Tom Rowlands at the very end of the show starts nerding out on synthetizers and delivers a killer solo sound, i really like it :luv ( been watching dozens of ending gigs with The Private Psychedelic Reel) and was wondering if he only performs this when they end with this particular song, or does he do this with other songs at the end ??

Thanks in advance !!!

that solo comes from the octave kitten synthesizer! he usually does this at the end all chemical brothers shows regardless of the reel. as of recent shows especially during festivals it'll be used at the end of block rockin' beats and for a bit galvanize
from 2007-2010 it would be used for the sunshine underground when that replaced the reel as the closing song, and in some instances it would close out chemical beats during the earliest shows for further

here's some videos of each!

Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world 〰️

Hi @hstn , thank you so much for your explanation, really appreciate it!! I love the fact that Tom plays those random short solo act on this piece of gear !! It feels like him delivering the last ultimate nod and piece of sound of the gig while you're still in state of trance from the whole performance  ::Y :Kry

Yeah, it's been the Chems' hallmark for like forever, and I love it too. Tom's not just twisting knobs. He really tries to accentuate the pitch like a "story arch". Almost as if the Octave Cat/ Kitten is actually communicating to the crowd. Especially the last few sounds often seem to function like a period in a sentence as if it were to say "alright, that's it, bye!". I love it when the pitch goes from faster LFO-back-and-forth to slower, real low and then ends on a very short, high pitched note:

These ones always send me, it's like honey to my ears !  :luv :music

I don't know anything about musical gear such as synths and whatnot but I started digging around, and I randomly fell on instagram content of a dude geeking on his Korg Monotron Delay producing random type of sounds and this device is pretty affordable ! Do you think this device can reproduce the "Tom and his Octave Cat / kitten synth" type of sound ?

I would love the idea of getting this device and producing live this type of sound at home while playing with the knobs and changing myself the LFO speed

Thank you

I am not familiar with this device you're speaking of but if you would like to test something a bit similar, you could give the TAL Bassline VST (virtual instrument) a shot. You can get a free trial FL Studio app and install it there and play around.

Or better yet, the ModCat VST
