An event of great magnitude!

Edit:
Here you can listen to short teasers of the new album to get the overall spirit. Unfortunately, it might be restriced in some regions.

I know it's a bit late now but on Friday the Chems Twitter account ran a little competition to win a signed copy of the triple vinyl.
All you had to do - last Friday - was Shazam 'Go' and then tweet your screen-capture of that shazam with a #ChemsGoR1 hashtag.
I missed it myself but I searched the hashtag and only about 4 or 5 people did it. So it would have been a really good chance to win. I suppose it might be worth keeping an eye out for another such competition on the Chems twitter.

^ You might want to change your countdown clock. They've moved the date to the 24th of July.
I saw it on Recordstore.co.uk (https://www.recordstore.co.uk/articlegroup.html?c=chem_bros) and thought it was a mistake. Then I checked the Chems offical shop (http://store.thechemicalbrothers.com/?utm_campaign=ChemicalBroStore&utm_content=ChemicalBroStore&utm_medium=Referral&utm_source=PressRelease) and found the same date. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I'm supposed to be flying to Russia on the 23rd. This is the worst.
I may have to postpone.

Well.. as per comments on Chems Facebook, it seems BITE is released in UK/Ireland on the 24th but the rest of the word gets it on the 17th! Weird considering UK is the Chems home territory. Go figure!

And the UK normally gets albums a day or two before.

Obviously no longer the case with the (stupid) new global Friday release days.

The plan was to fly into St. Petersburg but it's a lot cheaper to fly to Moscow and then get a train. So maybe! I'll keep you posted.

I guess there aren't that many Chembase forum members based in the UK and Ireland. Otherwise there would surely be more disappointed comments.
I may have to make up for this by complaining bitterly until more than one other person here agrees with me...
It's not fair!!  :( :'(

I'm annoyed enough for the whole of the UK.
It was going to be released on my last day of work. I was going to go home, pop the CD in my player, turn of all communication, set up some pillows and listen twice through like I have done with every album since Come With Us.
Now it's looking like I will have to wait until August 10th! Damn you Virgin!

Post by: whirlygirl on Jul 03, 2015, 15:14
I'm totally showing my age but Idon't get these new industry standards. Why have a global release and leave out the UK and Ireland?

I remember a similar situation with Further, which was available on iTunes on my side of the pond first. I couldn't complain, but it did seem odd (if not unfair) to everyone else!
Title: Re: Born In The Echoes (Release Date)
Post by: Enjoyed on Jul 03, 2015, 15:36
Well that was the whole point with moving everything to Friday. So that there would be international release dates. But having introduced it just this week, we are already going to have discrepancies.
I mean obviously the Friday thing is just the day and doesn't imply that all releases globally will be on the same week. But because it's now Friday only, countries that do have different release schedules will be a whole week behind, rather than the odd day or two that they were before.

GRRRRR.

"A sense of occasion around the release of new music" they say (http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/feb/26/new-music-to-be-released-on-fridays-worldwide-from-this-summer)...

Title: Re: Born In The Echoes (Release Date)
Post by: Wolkenkrabber on Jul 07, 2015, 07:34
We discussed it on the old forum; I think it's amongst  the posts that we lost. I have to admit we didn't try to translate the word Buki into a proper English word though. If it is EBW11, that would save me some money, as the Japanese version won't be so imperative to buy now.  But I'm not entirely convinced yet. Why not call it Electronic Battle Weapon 11 if that's what it is?
Title: Re: Born In The Echoes (Release Date)
Post by: Enjoyed on Jul 07, 2015, 09:22
Also, why does it have two translations? The slash on all the other tracks has the katakana afterwards but Direct Buki has a kanji translation after the slash and then the katakana in brackets... IS WEIRD!

It's strange, I ordered the 3LP and the deluxe cd from the online Chemsstore (universalmusic.co.uk). But living in the Netherlands which release date will apply to me?
I have asked this question to universal music but they also haven't got an answer (yet).
If the Chemstore ships after the UK release date I will recieve it 10 days after the release in my country.

It sounds like the UK store simply wont have the albums ready for the 17th so I'd bet heavily on yours being shipped on the 24th like the rest of us UK suckers. Sorry :(

So there is literally no reason for the delay...

This sucks. I wont be back in the UK until August 10th so it's either listen to a rip, try and get the download whilst I'm abroad and shut myself away for a couple of hours to listen in headphones on my phone or wait 17 days after release to listen properly.

I wonder if I were to contact them and tell them my situation whether they may make an exception... This is the first album since CWU that I wont be home for  :'(

After hearing all previews, as well as Radiate and Wide Open on KEXP, I have mixed feelings :/
I would say I love half of the album and the rest leaves me just... meh.
Overall, it seems that they focused on much more simple tracks, as opposed to the more complex tracks with lots of layers they used to do. A lot of the tracks have a very basic structure with just one or two synths, and a simple rhythm. Sometimes it works well, but on other tracks it sounds empty

I'm not even gonna go near those previews,  I mean I can wait 6 days can I?  Even though 30 sec is not justifiable to give me prepared great expectations or disppointments for this album, I would prefer a proper listen on the release date.

I think your mixed feelings will change for the best next Friday Ben.

17th july the 3LP and deluxe cd will be shipped from the UK Chemstore to me in theNetherlands

I've heard:
Sometimes I feel so deserted - the BBC excluxive premiere and EBW11
Go - the BBC exclusive premiere and the Michel Gondry video over and over, and on belgian radio Stubru
Under the neonlights - through Pitchfork and the Chems website, couldn't help myself
EML Ritual - live at Werchter where it got stuck in my head so I listened to the Chems youtube page

So I heard track 1 to 4. Further previews or releases I will not listen to or I will ruin the rest of listening to the album for the first time. I want some surprises to be intact. I reckon 10 days before the album falls on my doormat.

I have heard only SIFSD, Go and Under Neon Lights so far, not including live tracks, and I'm freakin' pumped for the whole album.

It's been a real challenge not to listen to EML Ritual after everyone's comments but I know it'll be worth it.

I'm going to write the chemstore an email tomorrow pleading for an early release to me before I go away for 18 days. Otherwise on August 10th I will come back on here to spout my love for BITE and I'll have to try and enjoy Scandanavia knowing that there is a triple vinyl and a special edition CD of new Chemical Brothers  music waiting at home.

Life is tough.

Could you be bothered to take some pics please? Just to see how it looks in reality. They look indeed better than any other merch from the past eras. What I don't get, however, is, why didn't they include one of the BITE themed shirts in their special edition bundle instead of these rather basic logo shirts?

Here are the pics. As i have experience with screen printing for my work, i see that ist's just a quick one layer of ink. A couple of few washes, and there will be cracks in the print. Also the tshirt itself is quite thin. Actually is miss the small logo on the arm of the shirt, as many of my other chem's shirts have that. Im still happy with them :). There were two t-shirt stands at Rockwerchter. One immediately on the left just after the entrance, and one further to the back. The one near the entrance had the chemical brothers shirts, to other stand didn't.

Hmmmm.  I'm not doing this to wind anyone up as i had genuine high hopes but on first listen, I'm not so sure.  The three tracks they put out first are the benchmark and only I'll See you there and wide open are doing much for me at the minute. But i shall persevere but right now my 4 word review is Bored In the Echoes. I'll never be as disappointed with an album as i was with Random Access Memories but this is not grabbing me yet.  Hopefully it will pass the car test tomorrow on way to work, and to be honest i have not had the greatest day.  So maybe i will listen later when a bit more chill.   I'll See you there is a thing of awesomeness though.

I didn't connect with Come With Us at all at first. My initial impressions were less than desirable. I know it's some peoples' favorite album so I get the whole not wanting to upset anyone. It is what it is. Time passing and hearing the music in the live context, discussing here what people liked about some of the songs I was struggling with - those things brought me out of that funk or helped changed my perspective,  Sometimes albums are a grower. Other times not so much. And of course mood has a lot to do with first impressions! I hope your day gets better :)

Am I being an idiot or have they changed the release date back to the 17th in the UK store (https://store.thechemicalbrothers.com/*/*/Triple-Vinyl-LP-inc-Print/4FUE0000000)?

Friday is my last day at the college I've been teaching at for the last 4 years and it would be such an incredibly perfect send off if I could get home and listen to the new Chemical Brothers album as I begin the next chapter of my life.

Amazon doesn't have a release date at all anymore. The regular CD, Deluxe CD and Triple LP are all 'Currently unavailable.'
"We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."

I'm scared. And excited. And hopeful. And wary. And completely ready for this album.

At least the leak wasn't a week, or a month prior to the release. i'd say good control on  the most part by chems HQ! Not bad at all.

Man, I hope everything will sort out for you  in your favor! I liked your initial plans on how to listen to it and think I'm gonna do the same here. But I'm kind of scared too, because I still haven't received any shipping notification yet. Has anyone of you here had experiences with pre-orders? Do they usually come to one's door step on release date or would they just be sent out that day?

I have abstained from listening to any material from BITE since EML Ritual was released and decided not to read anything about the songs, so that there will be some surprises left for me when I take the CD for a spin tomorrow (provided any of the local stores has the Lt. Edition)  :music

You know they sampled a shaker? Would you normally have to give credit for a shaker? I'm thinking of all the James Brown 'Funky Drummer' samples or 'Amen Breaks' where the original artists didn't get a penny for being sampled. Geoff have you heard Direct Buki? Spill!

The fact that it gives LL Cool J a credit gives me hope that Direct Buki is actually the "Freak Freak Y'all, Feel The Beat y Y'all" track that I was going on about on the old forum back in April (and Thiagobyo then picked up on over on Facebook). It sampled and re arranged the vocal from this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vnm91C3oeIw

But Geoff if you know more, then please tell!
Is it possible to access Japanese itunes with a proxy so we can listen to the preview clip? I guess you would have to register your address/ credit card which could be tricky...

My opinion on the deluxe edition tracks :
Let us build a city is pretty forgettable
Wo Ha is really nice
Reflexion (Extended mix) is a disapointement, it's just longer, it doesn't add anything to the original besides longer intro and outro
Go (Extended mix) is always as good as the first three thousand times I played it over the last two months.

Feeling it now.  I wont say too much yet but am thinking of doing a bit of a proper review at some point soon, let everyone listen to it first.  Oooh, i can do a new mix, just realised.  I might just do a re-edit of my Chemicalism one as some of the bits on there I dont think i can improve on.  But we'll see.

Hope nobody minds the live-blog style entries. My wife and kids don't give a shit about this CD, and I've got no firends that are fans besides you guys.  And I feel like sharing.

I enjoyed Reflexion very much, and Taste of Honey is as disappointing as promised. It really breaks up the album. I'd like to taste an instrumental and see how I feel about it. Born in the Echoes (track) is okay. Hoping the album ends strong.
Title: Re: Born In The Echoes (Release Date)

Radiate  is cool and Wide Open seems like a track that will grow in the ranks with more listens. I really dig it, and its happy feel does envoke Royksopp as Sandelic said. It kinda reminds me of first hearing Hold Tight London and Surface To Air: I don't think it is as strong as those two, but I remember how new and different they sounded the first time I heard them. That's how Wide Open made me feel.

Overall, I like the album. The first seven tracks are killer. Just Bang and Reflexion are early favorites along with Sometimes I Feel So Deserted and Under Neon Lights. I can't wait to relisten to EML Ritual and I'll See You There , and Go has grown on me in time for the album.

I like it more than TINAG. Does the CD say who does the vocal on that one? I don't think it's been mentioned anywhere.

The deluxe version tracks are cool. I prefer Wo Ha of the bonus tracks, and Go of the extended versions. Reflextion 's extended mix sounded very similar to the original to me, but I've only heard each once and am looking forward to multiple listens.

I can't wait to get Direct Buki and the Special Request remix of Go,  but for now, I'll play this over and over for days.

One more note. I noticed the lack of overlapping songs on this album. I was surprised there wasn't  a single transition between songs like previous releases, but the flow between tracks was nice and this wasn't a detractor.  It was just different.

Yeah, the FB stuff was strange. I was on that thread.

Forgot about TINAG...it was forgettable regrettable. Yes, Taste of Honey is better. The liner notes credit Stephanie Dosen and Chenai Zinyuku on vocals.

Post by: androidgeoff on Jul 16, 2015, 23:21
This album feels out of order and there is little cohesion. The theme of this album seems to be disconnect? There is a feeling of emptiness in the fullness (which is actually a good thing, as bad as it sounds). Expectations were high and I am happy with the experience. The album's best part may be the fact that pronouncing the song name acronyms phonetically is a fun pastime.

I REALLY LIKED THIS ALBUM. I HAD A LOT OF ISSUES BUT THIS ALBUM IS GREAT.

SIFSD - Sometimes I Feel that when I listen to this song, I am listening to retro Chems. This rivals Chemical Beats for me. Great vocal, the buildup through the distortion stages is appreciated. I wish this was elsewhere in the album. It has that, "Ok, I know it is the middle of the album, but here is a driver that will keep on pumping." The ending was abrupt. It was like when you are taking a really nice, hot shower. The water is just flowing on you and you keep turning the temperature up a little, lowering it to wash your hair for quick cool downs. But then, as you get to that really nice, relaxed spot, someone flushes the toilet and your water turns ice cold. You are like, "COLD MAMA HELP" Then it becomes time to...

Go! - The review tie in I made was unbelievable. This version of the song is not. Production is great, but the Edge of Control version is my preferred version. Q-Tip had a frog in his throat with this song. Perhaps he likes to knit and this song is really about his desire to knit his own damn way, with butterfly, smoke, fire, and cross hair patterns. There are a lot of background stabs and stuff that were awesome. Bump them up in the mix! Starting with this song and going into C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L. (or vice versa) would have had a great motif. "We are The Chemical Brothers. We are here to make you... GO!"

UNL - Hot mama. All I want is a view tonight of St. Vincent, eye to eye, and face to face. Oh, this is a song. This is an excellent song. Everything works. This is one of those songs where you will need to listen to it many times to hear its quirks.

EML - You know, but you don't understand. You were told you can't comprehend. You thought it was something someone said somewhere. So long, I don't know what to do. I am doing to lose my mind. I am going to....

DO IT AGAIN. The loud blare sound is Tom putting the do it again vocal through a lot of processing and at a higher pitch. The 16 beat transitions should have been 8. The synths are cathartic. Seriously, the intricacies of the distortion processing tickles my higher frequency cilia. Bless those Chemical Brothers.

TFISYT - This is my favorite song on the album. The layout could have been different (like the live version), but I have listened to this at least 20 times in the last day. Big song for my big heart on. Ringo does a fantastic job on the drums. What is he? 70? What compressor on the drums? Fairchild? Best drum aesthetic production since DYOH (the song).

Just Bang - Acid Detroit Tech House.  Bang. Let's Bang? TechNO. Let's Dance to This Song, INSTEAD. Imagine if SWIPER THE BEST SONG were to be incorporated in this one. I don't think I would ever listen to another piece of music again. I would never be able to handle anything again. The peak of existence would have been reached. Seriously, dance your little heart out, Tony Dancer. Chemical Brothers, don't make dubstep, just make this stuff. If Kandi Rave Kids cannot handle it, that is because IT WAS MIXED WITH SWIPER. Or, because their parents forgot to forward money to their "Savings" account that they totally are responsible with. Save nothing, millenials. Spend all of your hard earned cash at Starbucks and for Molly. Whether Molly is your girlfriend or someone else's girlfriend, you should let her know that her name is associated with drugs. "Goddamnit. I just legally changed my name from Lucy. Previously, I was Mary Jane. Can't catch a break. Oh, I should call myself Krokodil."

Reflexion - What is that repetitive rolling click noise in the left channel? It annoys the shit out of me. It is all I can focus on. Is this on purpose? This song is so great, but this sound draws my attention too much. The fact that it is mixed "in the front" and the synths we should be focusing are mixed toward the back.... OH GOOD IT WENT AWAY. Distortion woooooooooo. Woosh woosh woosh, I also know how Deadmau5 uses a peak controller to woosh woosh. Fuck, the clicky washboard wannabe is back. Is this the Berlin Washboard? "Oh, we found this synthetic washboard sample on this E-MU sampler that we found while clamming in the Thames. We had to use it. The name Reflexion references what we would see if we stared straight at a glossy washboard." Great song, but that noise bugs me. Look how much I talked about it. Or don't. Do what you want.

Taste O' Honey - I stuck my tongue out hoping to have a synesthetic (sure, that's a word) reaction. I can safely report that I actually had one. I tasted the toxins of a bee's stinger. Very bitter and medicinal. The start of this song samples Tom when he was pretending to be a vuvuzela. I love his voice. Now, contrary to popular belief, you actually can receive honey without having any money. Of course, you need to be a beekeeper, but that is so easy to become. There should be a special Binaural version of this song. This is a fun song. I enjoyed it a lot. ABRUPT ENDING YAY.

BITE - Me. This would have been a great opener. Then Go. Then C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L. This song is about a bat, by the way. Cate Le Bon is an old school vampire. She discusses where she would wake up, but never actually reveals where. The answer is a coffin. Another stellar offering from The Chemistry Brothers. Also, this really piggybacks on the whole zombie/vampire/werewolf/fairy craze of the last 7 years. Salmon Dance wish it got those drums, but it is about a fish and not mythological creatures. Sorry Fatlip, you are no Le Bon. Go find a man named Simon and make a fusion band.

Radiate - Vel. O. Dradiate. I wish Tom Rowlands did not make fun of stuttering. Tom Rowlands references something he cannot see, so he asks for it to radiate. Love is a code word for the radiator in his basement. This should have been the end. Slow, melodic, and very calming... Uplifting, sappy, and fun for the whole family! Just Radiate Your Radiator To Me.

Wide Open - Wide Open and Radiate need to switch spots or something. Instead of critiquing Wide Open, I will discuss possible facts about it. The song contains both The Chemical Brothers and Beck. Wide Open could be in reference to such things as a door being open all the way or one's splayed legs after taking the best bowel movement of their life. The song contained a BPM of around 123, possibly even 123.4 to keep with the 4x4 motif presented throughout the whole piece. Beck's voice goes through some vocal processing. The song uses drum samples that mimic Daft Punk's Face to Face / Chem Bros' own Believe. The song contains chorus both in song structure and in audio processing. Beck also notes that lots of things are getting away from him. Perhaps he is a slow runner? The possibilities are... dare I say?

Let Us Build A City - This is Rowlands channeling his inner Underworld. Vocals are really fun, floating in the back. This is PTB Era in spirit.

Wo Ha - Woahhhh haaaaaaaaaaa. Sounds like a high person getting a joke. "If you press play, the music will begin and the crowd will dance." "Wooah huh?" The drop is dropped. "Woahh haaaaa." The falling pitch of pitches, along with the drifting chimes leaves me with a feeling of woe. How this song does flow haaaa. Like a falcon being called by its trainer, my mind needed to be called back to reality via, "wo!" Tom used Tom drums well in this.

Direct Buki - EBW 6 + LL Cool J. Really fun techno-y and acidic synths. The tight usage of hi hats keeps with the tech house feel that this album has at times. The 1.5 beat through an LFO or whatever synth that is in the back just keeps me goin'. This is even more sinister than EML! Direct Buki-p on repeating this song. This would be so cool live. Just Bang + This live would cause my eyes to implode and my ears to become the size of Dumbo's. I would then be able to finally experience the elevation that The Chemical Brothers wish to provide me. As I fly off into the night sky, I can speak directly to the Brothers, quoting the last line of Direct Buki.... Goodbye, thanks to all of you!

Forgot about TINAG...it was forgettable regrettable. Yes, Taste of Honey is better. The liner notes credit Stephanie Dosen and Chenai Zinyuku on vocals.

Thank You! Well the main vocal doesn't sound like Ms Dosen to me, maybe she's on the echoey bits around 2.04(?). It seems Ms Zinyuku was on the X Factor back in2005]. She mentions her Chems vocal on her own website. (http://www.chenaimusic.com/bio/) Perhaps this is the start of bigger things for her! I think the voice makes the track, and I kinda like it.

Oh, CHEMBASE TEAM is there a way of linking this youtube video without embedding it? I tried to to turn "2005" into a blue link but it just ended up embedding the video . (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESHrUrhGJLQ)

Woooorking on it. I foresaw this being a problem and thought there was a tag to prevent it auto-embedding (nobbc), but that tag would also kill the URL tags, so, it's pretty self-defeating. I'll see what I can do.

Not dead! I'm officially home as of yesterday, ended up on an unexpected mini-family vacation the day I personally got back from mine. Cue Madonna's Ray of Light, eh?

I have a lot to tell and a lot to fix up around here too, you'll be seeing me plenty again. :)

Are you Chemical Reaction? You haven't tried to wind anybody up recently!

Does this mean you no longer agree with your comments around the time of Pleasure/Through Me about how it was all going a bit crap?

I'm a changed man/boy now. Plus new album is here so its better to spread positive vibes before the dark side takes over. I don't know what that means just saying it because it sounds cool. What I said about something someone somewhere still stands true. It was what I felt at the time and made me go on a rage, there is a lot of new music to fuck with so there won't be much interms of intense hate comments. Plus I was on some next level drugs back then....anywAYS.....

That review by androidgeoff is funny!!! Kindda makes me wanna get high now but I think just listening to the music at night on "beats by dre" should be enough. I'll try to formulate a review, I'm not particularly good at it though.

I just want to be precise, very clear on what I'm about to say about this album.

My review of this album is the following words and synonyms:  Exceptional, remarkable, curious, amazing, excellent, unusual, out of the ordinary, notable, freakish, astounding, astonishing, bizarre, incredible, outstanding, particular, phenomenal, rare,  special, unique surprising, uncommon, unfamiliar, unheard-of, unimaginable, unprecedented, impressive, exotic, grand, memorable, mighty, miraculous, noble, out of this world, peculiar, phenomenal, portentous, prodigious,  refreshing, remarkable, singular, striking, substantial, surrealistic, wondrous, psychedelic.

Brothers & Sisters, officially, 2015 it's a good year.

Favorite track: I'll See You There, an exploration that gives a profound effect in experiential journeys into the depths and heights of your souls.  Even taking references to an era where listeners tended to transport themselves to another place, another state of mind, alternate states via sounds,  that connection between the melody, drums, bass , mind bending effects are an indication that the future is now, and we must explore it and see it. The future I'll see you there.

Something inside of me said that I'll be disappointed with this release (don't know why), but far from it. Great album indeed, the evolution of the Brothers  it is marked as their goal, and they succeeded

They are delivering since the 90s and they still are.

The Chemical Brothers still working it out.

Easily their weirdest album.

Seconded.  Some of their albums feel like a whole concept where everything fits, others feel like a collection of random stuff. Somehow this is a bit of both. Daft punk reacted against EDM by reverting to instruments and trying to get a lot of soul in there. The Chems have done it by proving  its possible to make weird, off kilter, atmospheric and funky.  Think i'll leave it there but i'll do a review after I finish work. Or possibly during work if i can get away with it

One of my favorite things (past times, hobbies) is to review experiences I have with Chems albums or shows. Because their work is so conceptual and linear, the ride undulates on a series of peaks and valleys.  Like a story played out in sound from start to finish. This album doesn't. In so many ways it reminds me of Dig Your Own Hole with its disjointed weirdness, experiments in sound, fractured voyages. This album demands my complete undivided attention. It throttles the senses in every which way and is a worthy challenge - though it really is hard to get my head around it all. A review is coming, but it's going to take some more solid listens.

Can't wait to read what you write!

Listened to it a few times throughout the day. in my opinion, it might be their best since Come With Us. I may just be on the high of brand new Chemical, but honestly, the ONLY weak point is Taste of Honey. and even that has been growing on me. Favorite tracks so far include Just Bang, Wide Open, and I'll See You There. But also Born in the Echoes... and Under Neon Lights......

Tired as hell this AM. I listened to BitE 4 times yesterday, and finally forced myself to bed after midnight. I kept hearing the songs in my head and couldn't fall asleep. Two hours later, I was up on my mobile checking here and FB for more reviews.  I had to be up by 6:30 AM and am too damn old for all-nighters. I'm at work now, and listened again on my way in. This time I shuffled the order to switch it up: it's the one advantage to the lack of transitions.

On further listens, I am really starting to like Wo-Ha a lot. EML Ritual and Reflexion are becoming ear-worms for me, and Just Bang is my early favorite. I don't think I'd describe it as weird like Whirly does, but its non-traditional feel is part of the appeal to me.

I'm still pleasantly surprised by Wide Open. I wasn't expecting to love the Beck collaboration, and I most certainly was not expecting that vibe for the track.

And so you know...staying up late for a CD and missing 'bedtime' also did not produce any honey.

I had a hard time trying to get to sleep last night! :D

Now it's early where I am and there's no way I can call in sick from work with the BITE flu. But naturally I am here checking the forum for more thoughts, reviews, etc.

One thing that strikes me about this album are the songs feel like they can be played in any order or no particular order. You can have the album on shuffle and it would seem to make sense. Or choose your own Born In The Echoes playlist. Many more listens are on the horizon, so I'll hear if this impression I have will actually play out like I'm imagining it would.

I really love the flow of Under Neon Lights to EML Ritual then to my new spiritual awakening song of the moment I'll See You There and what a way to be exposed to it by seeing those live visuals. Reflexion is hypnotic and addictive. Wide Open is a surprise in terms how I thought it sound. Was hoping for a more showcase of talents from both parties involved but the 'new order' vibe they were going for was different for Beck to do which that in itself was interesting. The synth sounds and subtle sound bites in some of the songs are there too and nothing like you've heard anywhere else too.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS (mind my chicken scratches)

EML , ISYT, got repeated plays! Just bang...took me awhile to get warmed to it, but at the 3:17 mark, i cranked that baby up! My best track so far!

Reflexion...its very clubby dubby!

Taste of Honey 'scratches head'

born in the echoes....what a speaker banger!

(btw...what genre is this album anyway?)  :P This album is much mature and sinister.

raditate...i got some feels on this one. the same feels i got from KDB.

Wide Open...picks up at the half way point. I almost got disappointed at the beginning. good tracks.

this album is way better than average. On to the bonus tracks..

A balance, is well placed in Born In The Echoes.

Bonus tracks: LUBAC is a cousin to Orange Wedge! Wo Ha is somewhat a filler. I want to trade these 2 for Direct Buki!

Ok, two days and some solid play and its time.  During today i thought of lots of things to say and was thinking about doing a track by track review, referencing lots of stuff and generally being accurate, hilarious and incisive. But it wont turn out like that. ;D

I think the title reflects thats been a lot of revisiting and rethinking old sounds and ideas with the intention of making something new and exciting and i think they have done that, bigtime.

SIFSD has gone into my top 10 Chemical tracks, it could have been placed anywhere on this album or any other album, sounds old and new at the same time and that vocal is unbelievable.

Go- yeah its commercial and maybe the chorus is a little flat but that bassline and most of Q Tips vocal is on the money. Its the tune that will bring in the most new fans for sure

Under Neon Lights is super scary and intense and helps build into EML which gets more terryfing the more i listen to it, its fucking hard as nails, love it.

And then holy shit, I'll see you there turns up and its like they have decided to make a greatest hits package in one tune.  There's bits and ideas from at least 10 of their old tracks that i can spot so far, and it still manages to sound as fresh as a muhhafuhha.

I suppose at some point there had to be a downturn and i know some people really like it but Just Bang doesnt do enough for me but it does feel part of the album, the tracks selected do work together and it sets up reflexion nicely.  Which reminds me of laurent garnier for some reason.  A taste of honey is a bit daft but  there's loads happening and some strange ass noises that unsettle you.

The title track is brilliant, sounds like nothing else they have done really, very early eighties, sounds a bit like early Depeche mode at times and its a super quirky chorus.

I cannot tell you how emotional i got when i first heard Radiate. And i didnt feel awesome psychedelic vibes or awesome production or such bullshit, it was out of total respect and love for the man that is Tom Rowlands, his vocal his lovely and I felt very proud of him, i know he's sang before but this feels like a real moment for him.  I know its not going to happen but if he were to do this live and actually sing then i dont think i would be able to handle that without blubbing. I got a pioneer skies vibe as well.

Wide Open is thier best closer since The Test, really simple and very soulful and Beck sounds quite unlike Beck, lets face it they could made lots of different sounding stuff together but its a surprising result.
From not feeling it on first half listen, i'm really impressed now, its in my top 5 Chemical albums lets put it that way. I like how nothings too long and lots of stuff happens in a shortish space of time on each track.  Madder, Shorter, Darker, Stranger.

Reflexion is basically Burst Generator. Other than that, the record is more "night " than we are the night tried to be. Great follow up to Further without sounding like it.

I cannot stop listening to Just Bang. Very happy that the Chem Bros made a track like this. This is the drum machine version of Here Come the Drums. The play of hi hats, the varying syncopation, and succumbed-to minimalism are excellent. Though it is very new, there are many influences from EPD era tracks, especially with the distortion play.

Okay. I've avoid discussion up to this point. Here's the story of my journey through BITE so far.

Remembered that it's BITE day when I went to do Tuition payment for school (in other news...for later). Ran to the Mall where a HMV still exists (suprisingly). Deluxe edition, ney. Vinyl edition, not till end of month (Cause Canada). Regular edition, YAH! Get in car, pop in CD, listen, drive (too fast cause of 'Sometimes I Feel So Deserted'). Get home, plug into CD player, listen from where I left off at EML Ritual in car. Start folding laundry cause it's a big pile on bed from the morning. Finish, sit down at Radiate, start reading liner notes, Get really confused by 'I'll See You There' cause of word jumble. Finish Cd, hit replay, start google-ing. Find confusing national archives site with potential source of cover image, give up upon finding it's really confusing (project for someone?). Search Rowlands Audio Research, Find that Tom's middle name is Owen. Come here, start reading this thread. Start looking up Bill Bissett cause of sample listing in 'I'll See You There', find video below, realize that T&E continue to use weird Canadian psychedellic '60s works (Bill Bissett, Mort Garson). That's my journey to this point.

Lmao sounds like Ed came in the studio while Tom was jamming out and just pulled the plug and the music stops. Actually this happens quite a lot on the album. Abrupt endings. Why the hate on Taste of Honey? its a dark cute little track, the shortest on the album clocking in at 3 minutes. Sounds like soundtrack to a stripper documentary, like the end credits scene where the stripper realizes she's sick and tired of doing it for the money and just wants to move on with life but the drugs have fucked up her life forever now and she can't get out of this business....... too far out?

Right.  Like the leftover from Taste of Honey was probably used for This is not a game which was probably made cuz they don't have no moneyyy... Wish the track was longer like 30 minutes long.
The album is a natural progression of sound from the "experimental" Hanna and Further though. I'm just throwing random thoughts I'm having while listening to the album now.

I had an excruciating day at work and I had this album cranked on repeat. It's what got me through to 5 o'clock. Radiate would come on, and.... It's just one of those songs that stops space and time for me.  It's such a beautiful moment.

I'm really enjoying reading everyone's comments about these songs. It's like we're watching each other wrap our heads around these different songs. And there doesn't seem to be a collective favorite. This album taps into the diversity of opinions and feelings. Love it!

This is the most hilarious/sad thing I have read on this forum. The track is so quirky and original (um, apart from borrowing from TINAG). It's like trying to nail down jelly,

So does anyone besides me and androidgeff get irritated by the rolling click in the left channel of Reflexion?  I think it's more noticable on headphones than on speakers.

Oh also, I already mentioned this but I'm gonna repeat mysef til someone agrees: Who Ha and Build A City both sound like soundtrack tunes. Listen to how they're recorded. I can imagine a car cuising down the Vegas strip at night whist Build A City plays, and I can imagine the cast of Now You See Me sneaking around underground tunnels as they set up their next trick/heist whilst Wo Ha is playing.  If we could get an honest answer from T&E on this I think I'd win this bet.

My direct buki review has arrived. it is in my original post as well

You all described it very good, so since I can't add anything more I will say something different: wouldn't "Superflash" fit perfectly inside this album?

I love how much this album references past chemical tracks without directly sampling them like they've done before.
Reflexion is Burst Generator, Let Us Build a City resembles Orange Wedge, I'll See You There is essentially their 3rd "remix" of Tomorrow Never Knows, and there is another "pop hit" featuring Q-Tip. The only thing this album is missing is a Beth Orton collab.

INCHEM REVIEW! Laying the gauntlet down!

BITE to me is a great album, but I don't feel the 'chemical' attachment that's usually found on the other albums. The album almost isolates itself from the back discography, but with some studio aspirations that rivals PTB. The album feels very solid, but if you were to drop it, and it broke into pieces, you wouldn't care too much for it, because you would still love and appreciate what you heard and tape the album together again. In other words 'Echoes'  does feel comfortable next to the other albums if it wanted to, but doesn't hold a cherished love like Surrender, and that's because Tom and Ed put the album in a hole, left it there for months, lifted it out, and made a mischievous and maddening sounded album that created an unquestionable rift in the Chems audio timeline.  The album is frantic, momentous, and joyously abstract, and beautifully deserted!

Review...Scale of 1 to 10! With some sidenotes.

Sometimes I feel So Deserted - 8 (Good intro track to introduce the album)
Go  - 8  (catchy beat and my aforementioned love with Qtip)
Under Neon Lights - 6  (filler track that lacks mood)
EML Ritual - 8
I'll See You There - 8  (Yeah baby YEAH)
Just Bang - 8
Reflexion -8  (this grew the most on me)
Taste Of Honey - 5 ( you mean taste of Miguel? )
Born In The Echoes - 7 (Freeway chase! Ed takes wheel! Tom shoots!)
Radiate - 7 (forum hugs)
Wide Open -7

Bonus tracks not eligible, as they would not add or take away from the album positively or negatively.

I have been listening to BITE in Spotify from the release date and recieved the deluxe album and 3 LP last thursday which meant much better listens the the album. The volume of these productions is way better than the Spotify formats.

BITE is a logical follow up to Further. Very experimentel as Further but made in the same build up as the 6 albums before Further collaborations, dance trakcs in the front, laidback tracks in the end, freakyness in the middle).
It doens't sound like any Chemical Brothers album but it sounds very much like the Chemical Brothers. This how you stay fresh and innovative.

Depending on my mood 3quarters are favorite tracks with Relfexion, Radiate and Wide open being top notch. This is Chemical Brothers at their best. Beats, good song stucture and euphoria. Chemical Goodness
Just bang doesn't sound like an album track to me. It reminded my of Freak of the week, b-side style.
Taste of honey is the insect version of the Salmon dance. My least favorite at the moment but I can see this one grow on me. I like This is not a game better for now.
I understand why the bonus tracks are bonus tracks.  I can't see them fit the album really.  Skycraper has a good point saying these are discarded soundtracks.
I really like Let build us a city. Is has the same funkiness of the Duke and Giant. Really great.
Reflexion extended really should have been the album version. What's the point of cutting (just?) 50 seconds of this goodness? I can see Go (extended) not being the Go on the album cause of the drum ending. But Reflexion (extended) propably got cut for time issues, it kept going to long in comparisson with the rest of the album. Same faith happend before with Do it again (extended) and hey boy hey girl (extended), both of which I prefer over the album versions.

All in all I have been playing this album over and over again this weekend. I really like it a lot and I can see it becoming my top 3 favorite Chemical Brothers album with DYOH and CWU.

Quote from: satur8 on Jul 16, 2015, 23:11

One more note. I noticed the lack of overlapping songs on this album. I was surprised there wasn't  a single transition between songs like previous releases, but the flow between tracks was nice and this wasn't a detractor.  It was just different.

This was the first thing I heard as well. Hoping to hear an unmixed 3LP (like the 3LP promos) I was wondering how the transitions between the track would be. But no mixed tracks. That's a first for the brothers!!!

Quote from: Apostle on Jul 17, 2015, 20:26

Reflexion is basically Burst Generator. Other than that, the record is more "night " than we are the night tried to be. Great follow up to Further without sounding like it.
Quote from: Hutch108 on Jul 16, 2015, 06:13

Reflexion is Burst Generator's twin. seriously they are so similar. in sound, progression and structure, they are almost identical.

Really? I can't remember anyone ever saying that Burst Generator and Saturate are twins, which is true, both have exactly the same structure, but Reflexion gets a Burst Generation twin reference twice within a week of it's release? I would call it a younger or older sister.

Yeah, that's what surprised me as well throughout my first listen to the album. That goes especially for the first 4 songs. And it's actually one of those nitpicks I have about this record. Some songs' endings are just a bit too long or have some seconds running mutely where they easily could have done a proper segue to the next one.

UNL is a great song, but its production is strange. There is too much emphasis on lower frequencies, which actually caused the song to sound very quiet in comparison to the surrounding songs. I always have to bump it up to match Go's perceived amplitude.
