Title: 25th Anniversary Dig Your Own Hole
Post by: Travis on Feb 01, 2022, 06:25
There are prints and merch commemorating 25th anniversary if DYOH but think they will release any bonus tracks, secret mixes or remixes this year? Would love to see a live show performing the album with live vocals from Liam & Beth too. Imagine that.

I'd be satisfied with a good remaster of the album, b-sides, and remixes on CD. A live disc would be cool, too.

Yes!

Well... I would prefer audio to "supporting" merch such as prints, etc, but I know others will appreciate that stuff.

lol the first time i go to check chem bros out on spotify in like 6 months and an elektrobank demo is released

you can thank me for going back in time to 1996, stealing the demo, traveling back to the future, and then accidentally breaking it

then tom found out, as he also is part of the temporal wars. he was like "can you do anything right, you slag?"

now it's on spotify

Really excited for this. I wonder what "I Love Tekno" is, since it's labelled as "Alt Mix" it implies it should be another name for a track we already know? The live mashup of It doesn't matter and Under The Influence maybe?

I wonder if the LP will be limited to 1997 copies or not. Either way, dont sleep. Just ordered the LP & the postcards. Hope the bonus tracks are great. Elektrobank bonus isn't very exciting but its marked as a demo so that is why it doesn't feel finished. Hopefully the other alt mixes are epic like the ones on Surrender.

I can't imagine the new CD2 will have much more than half an hour of 'new' music on it. Seems a shame to leave empty disc space. So perhaps dropping tracks 1 and/or 6 from the above link you could probably squeeze the Loops of Fury EP on there too.

I'm super hyped about the bonus material, really love that Elektrobank Demo, it's really like just the alternative mix of it.

But what I'm excited the most is the Where Do I Begin, I Love Tekno and Cylinders B)

Btw, about the I Love Tekno thing, it's basically the Don't Stop the Rock B) :

So excited about this, need to order me some of the merch!  This is my favorite album of the ones I've listened to so far so it's super super awesome we're getting some new stuff.  I loved all of the small stories and insight behind each track; that's the thing I crave most, just knowledge and stories behind any and all things chemical.  I was especially excited to hear that It Doesn't Matter was one of their favorite tracks! - or at least, one of the favorites of whoever wrote these blurbs.  Who do we think did?  It's hard to tell based on the text alone.

This is (to my knowledge) the first real officially released stuff we've gotten from them this year, so I'm super excited to hear the rest.  As a few others on this thread mentioned, I wish there was inclusion of the other tracks on the singles in this album.  Buzz Tracks, Not Another Drugstore, and These Beats Were Made For Breakin are all some of my favorite Chem tracks and some of the most under appreciated ones, so it's a bit of a shame they're not getting coverage here, but I can't complain.

Do we think the other four bonus tracks are coming out on digital too?  I only listen to these guys digitally, I don't have a record player or anything, so I hope they do get digital releases.

If the LP is limited to 1997 copies, it would have sold out in less than an hour. Still for sale. I dont care about LTD editions anyway as no intention to sell, just want the new tracks but its likely they pressed 10X that amount due to how many millions of fans they have. Its also likely they will put out a standard non-numbered edition on the release date which will be exactly the same.
I doubt that is the case. Both Surrender boxes are still available everywhere cheap and easily which means they didn't seell well and Universal overestimated the demand.
That is probably also the reason for this stripped down reissue (only deluxe editions, no proper SDEs/box sets) in limited numbers.

Box sets never sell well so I can see why they didnt do a box set for this. Record stores hate them because they take up too much space and are hard to sell. I love them!

It would also make more sense to sell more LPs at a lower cost than this 3LP which is overpriced. Any fan who already has 2 or more vinyl pressing of the album has to weigh up if they want it to be a completist as it would be much easier to know its worth the money if there were samples to listen to all the bonus tracks.

Boxsets never sell well...
Boxsets are what make CDs a more profitable format than vinyl. Vinyl may have finally outsold CDs for the first time in terms of quantity, but CDs still brought in more revenue than vinyl. And that is largely thanks to boxsets. In 2022, vinyl may finally surpassed CDs in revenue, but we must wait and see.

Take up too much space in record stores...
Rarely anyone buys their music from record stores anymore except on Record Store Day. Most people just order online.

This might be the one place that that's not true actually! I visit my local record stores at least once a month. I'd love to order things directly from artists' websites, but with shipping costs, it's actually cheaper, or at least very close, to go get it from a store. Plus I get to support a great local business - not to mention walk home with it that day.

I did order The Chems CD online, of course, but given that it's a UK print (seemingly), not sure how much chance there is of getting it in store.

Boxsets though, to your point, are the big exception. I've bought all those online and wouldn't trust my luck to secure a limited thing like that in store - if it was even available.

The Blessed Madonna does a three-hour show on BBC 6 Music on a Saturday night. It gets broken up into three seperate sections/podcasts.

21:00 BST Mixtape: Chems Mania! (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001613r)
The Blessed Madonna plays the best samples from the Chemical Brothers' "Dig Your Own Hole" - which celebrated its 25th anniversary this week.
With music from Rare Earth, Captain Rock, Schooly D plus a new track from the Chemical Brothers' previously unreleased session archive.

22:00 BST The Story Of... "Dig Your Own Hole" at 25! (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000v452)
The Blessed Madonna celebrates 25 years of a masterpiece from the Chemical Brothers by playing the album in full.
Join the Blessed Madonna as she pays homage to "Dig Your Own Hole", with some recordings from the BBC archive of Ed and Tom breaking the record down.
(I'm guessing we'll get some stuff from T&E's thing they did for Zane Lowe back when he was on BBC Radio 1, Zane Lowe's Masterpieces (https://www.mixcloud.com/thezencooler/zane-lowes-masterpieces-dig-your-own-hole/))

23:00 BST Sweatbox: Erol Alkan (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001613t)

So what does she really play? Album in full? Or the stuff from the archive? She only has 1 hour and doing both is not possible. Even just playing the album in full is not possible becouse it's runtime is longer than 1h

But very excited for that Erol Mix

I guess one hour in the context of radio shows doesn't need to be exact.
Also, with the radio edits of Block Rocking Beats and Setting Sun, the album gets very close to one hour.

Rarely anyone buys their music from record stores anymore except on Record Store Day. Most people just order online.

I can't comment on the 'most' part but there are people who prefer to buy from stores. (in fact I prefer to buy from stores as long as it's NOT RSD. eff that monkey business.) I've particularly been attentive to record stores since they started to re-open last year. partially because I am grateful they even survived all the shutdowns. partially to avoid having to pay for shipping, deal with receipt of the package, and the potential for shipping damage. I'll order things online that are exclusive to an online store, or limited edition and likely to sell out online.

Well, I've actually listened to the full thing, had some real fun, but tbh. I was hoping for the more Chems oriented mix from Erol, plus maybe a lil sneak-peak in form of some EBW, or another bonus track, but naaah.

I think, that I'll pass on buying the separate copy of the album, but I'll get the bonus content as digital. To be honest, It'll be really nice as the separate EP for those, who have their trusty CD, or Vinyls :D

The "Loose Yourself"-Episode that was aired right after Erol's mix was by Wolf Alice, or more specific by their drummer Joel, and featured also some Chemicals

Quote

Joel explores some of the drummers, producers, bands & DJs who he has lost himself in throughout the years. Their approaches, rhythms, and sonics have been an inspiration and soundtracked many a bop about town during his teens, twenties, lockdowns, and beyond. Music from J Dilla, Soulwax, DJ Shadow & The Chemical Brothers.

21:00 BST Mixtape: Chems Mania! (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001613r)
The Blessed Madonna plays the best samples from the Chemical Brothers' "Dig Your Own Hole" - ... plus a new track from the Chemical Brothers' previously unreleased session archive.
The 'new' track was of course the Elektrobank demo. A nice hour of tunes though. Good to hear James' "Come Home" in there. I'm old enough to have bought James' Gold Mother album in 1990/91, mostly because I liked Come Home. I know Tom says the inspiration for the Reel was a Mercury Rev gig (re: the cacophonous nature of the track) but in terms of the chords, I think Come Home (sampled in TPPR) was probably the jumping off point. [I sorta mentioned this before in another thread but the subject changed to the probable Beatles sitar sample.] You can kinda hum TPPR over this track.

So they used the "Directors Commentary" of T&E discussing the album. It wasn't actually broadcast as part of Zane Lowes Masterpiece show but it was uploaded to the BBC website as a stream in conjunction with that show in 2012. Edited down to fit into an hour.

I enjoyed this. I'm not entirely sure why the Chems didn't do the DJ mix considering they picked the tracks. But hey, Erol x Chems = Yay! I think I enjoyed the Chems track selection more here than on the Oddbod Distress mix in December 2020 (which I was "extremely ungenerous" about, according to a Chemical Brother). I just wasn't keen on a lot of track choices there, but here...I am. Chemical completists could probably count this as a Chemical mix and should definitely give it a listen.

Nice to hear Photonz Planetary Spirit in there. It kinda sounds like Paganini Trax' Zoe on steroids.  Eclair Fifi played it in her Essential Mix back in September 2021 and I tried to post it here in Now Playing, but I couldn't because it was unreleased at the time. I guess I can post it now...

Anyone catch this article?

https://www.grammy.com/news/chemical-brothers-dig-your-own-hole-25th-anniversary-block-rockin-beats

Looks like they talked to Errol for this article and recycled some old quotes from Tom and Ed,  interesting looking back, especially in regards to their impact in the United States.

Fun tidbits:

Quote
The success continued with a GRAMMY win and two nominations in 1998, taking home a golden gramophone for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Block Rockin' Beats." And Rowlands and Simons started finding out that they had a growing number of famous admirers: George Harrison, who was also sampled on "Setting Sun"["It Doesn't Matter"]and served as an inspiration for the album's Beatles tribute "The Private Psychedelic Reel," [huh?, this meant to be "Setting Sun"?] sent over a signed copy of his 1969 album Electronic Sound.

"We met Simon Le Bon," Simons told SPIN in 1997. The Duran Duran frontman was a fan, and he let them know. "He was out of his mind. He was singing us his new song, and saying he wanted a remix. He said 'Setting Sun' was the best thing he'd heard in the 1990s. Me and Tom were at a loss for words. We started mumbling about 'Rio' and 'Ordinary World.'"

Also, this which we figured, but still nice to hear:

Quote
The album's siren songs still have the depth to set off dancefloors worldwide. And the Chemical Brothers are still winning GRAMMYs, most recently Best Dance Recording (for "Got To Keep On") and Best Electronic/Dance Album (for their ninth studio album, No Geography) at the 2020 GRAMMY Awards. Rowlands and Simons are currently in the studio working on new music, because it's still their job to find those Saturday night smash hits.

Good catch on It Doesn't Matter. Harrison is also sampled on the track, DYOH.
Re TPPR, I'm gonna go with the article here. There's sitar all over the Reel and as previously mentioned, it is either inspired by, or cheekily sampled directly from Harrison's playing on Norwegian Wood. In addition we know that the title of TPPR is based on a mythical Beatles tape.

Will report back in 3 hours!
(sounding great so far)

UPDATE: OK. The 'Story Of...' mp3 cut out just as TPPR was beginning :( I forget it there was talk about that being the case to keep it under an hour. But, come to think of it, the ending ramble from Blessed Madonna was cut short in the 'Mixtape' too (though it sounded like she was just wrapping up and explaining the next hour).
Sound is great for a 128 though!

UPDATE2: Just spent 2 hours working on infographics and the last hour making dinner. Lovely stuff. All three do cut out a little early, but who knows what tosh is being talked over during that anyhow.
The Sweatbox mix is delicious. Especially enjoyed that Erol rework of Confidence Man. V nice indeed.

Though I agree, Chem10 in 2023 is more likely.

Ok, three rips for the three hours of DYOH related radio shows. Not cut short at the end (following Enjoyed's previous post here).

Spoiler

Mixtape Chems Mania! (https://www.mediafire.com/file/zdci5l3mk863sjn/The_Blessed_Madonna_Mixtape_Chems_Mania%2521.rar/file)

Story of DYOH at 25 (https://www.mediafire.com/file/re4f6aa7hymk3ax/The_Blessed_Madonna_The_Story_Of..._Dig_Your_Own_Hole_at_25%2521.rar/file)

Erol Sweatbox (https://www.mediafire.com/file/b3esepxmouvsj1m/The_Blessed_Madonna_Sweatbox_Erol_Alkan_Chems_mix.rar/file)

Re: Erol's Sweatbox mix, if you're checking the tracklist on BBC, you may or may not care that:
1) The Exorcist (Ya Ya mix) is by The Scientist
2) There's a "woo track" at 39 mins but it's not The Woo Track. It's Hack Jammer (LDLDN mix) by Posthuman which is a 2022 track out next week. I really like the acid parts of this track but I really don't like the jazzy chords!
3) After Erol's rework of Confidence Man there's actually one more track - but it isn't listed. My hunch is that it is not Chemical. If I were to to take a wild guess I'd say it's by Ivan Smagghe (or Smagghe & Alkan). Why? Because it has that 80s synth sound which Smagghe loves, and Erol has been Dj-ing with him recently. It doesn't shazam.

As for the "Directors Commentary" of DYOH. It looks like the original version of that from 2012 is still available to stream on the BBC website. It's about 5 mins longer than the version here. I guess if someone is really keen I could rip that at some point, but you're not missing much.

Audibly gasped at this  :D  The idea of having a "studio" version of Woo Track is still too exciting to comprehend.  Also, my apologies if you're already aware of this, and I'm misunderstanding, but it was identified where that "Woo" is from - It's Janet Jackson's "The Pleasure Principle:"

https://youtu.be/4P18gMK8TWs

A lot of songs sampled this and it's funny that one of the songs they chose to play was also another song that sampled it, lol.

Edit: Never mind, you were the one who found that sample, please excuse my foolishness   :D

Satur8, you say you hear a bit of HBHG? I was thinking OoC, but that just might be by osmosis, considering their live pairing history.

Tune in Friday at 11am to hear Mary Ann Hobbs debut a previously unreleased version of "Where Do I Begin (Alt Mix) 15/6/96" featuring Beth Orton on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Sounds.

Mary Ann Hobbs show normaly starts at 10:30am BST (11:30am CET) so maybe 11am is an exact time when she drops WDIB or they just got the wrong time. Anyway, i also think that tune will be online at midnight like the ones before.

Hi,
Do you know where the rest of the recording is available for download or streaming ?
In the news, they wrote "As a special bonus, a live recording from the Dig Your Own Hole tour is available digitally today on streaming and download platforms, "Live From Lowlands Festival 1997" features" with 15 songs.
Thanks !

Ooh Chemical Beats going for a Higher State of Consciousness "tribute".
I don't usually listen to old live stuff (-more interested in new live stuff).
But maybe I should...

I have previously expressed not-so-positive thoughts about Setting Sun live at Glastonbury (TPPR single). But perhaps the live version from that time works better within the context of the show than it does when you just play it by itself.

What's the vocal around 4 mins into Mind Response? "I'm jiggy now I've seen her"??

Speaking of tributes. In the "directors commentary" that T&E did for DYOH in 2012 (that was then slighty edited for this year's Blessed Madonna radio show), Tom mentions the tribute to Joey Beltram's Energy Flash in the title track. You can hear it around 1:47 to 2:16 on the track. He also mentions how the bassline from Doin It After Dark influenced DYOH (the track). The lower bassline bubbling along the bottom.

Worth a listen if anyone here hasn't yet. Link still available on page 3 of this thread.
Also the slightly longer version is still stream-able on the BBC website (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0125srd) if you're able to access it from your location...

Seriously is. I'm not largely familiar with some of the older live bootleg recordings, so all of this is a pretty fresh experience.

I now have a better understanding of why stubborn nearsighted fans from the early days basically rejected anything post- 'Dig Your Own Hole'. Good Lord, this is one fierce set!

Disappointed to find out that my Air Pod Pros let the bass crackle on 'Three Little Birdies Down Beats' and 'Elektrobank'. Can anybody confirm these as weak points in the recording? Either way, the bass crackling clicked fond memories of myself at 17 cruising in my shitty White Chrysler LeBaron convertible (... yup, just like the CAKE song), blasting said tunes on a low performing ghetto sound system at like 2 in the morning.

The title track (DYOH) with the "Base 6" interlude/breakdown is phenomenal. What a fucking gift!

I have no clue why this is not a separate release. This is way too hot to be an afterthought on an anniversary release. Tom and Ed, if you're reading this please consider a limited "physical" release for Black Friday or Record Store Day.

Thanks Tom and Ed!

As much as I love Lowlands - it's much more interesting than the newly released mixes and indeed the absolute highlight of the anniversary edition - it's really kinda disappointing that it's neither released on CD/LP nor included as download. I already paid EUR 120 (incl. shipping, VAT & handling) for 3LP+2CD+Polaroids from the official store and now I'm gonna have to shelve out another EUR 25 for the download version...

It's frustrating, but let's keep in mind, there was no deception here. It wasn't known that the Lowlands set was part of the digital release until the actual release date.

Why they added this last minute, I don't know. Like I mentioned before, this would have been a significant release on its own. And now it seems like it, more-or-less, will be buried into obscurity.
Title: Re: 25th Anniversary Dig Your Own Hole
Post by: satur8 on Aug 03, 2022, 16:17
I'm with everyone else. The Lowlands set blew my mind! It is available via Apple Music and I've pretty much listened to it every day. And also, it sounds so crisp! This is the era in which I discovered the Brothers and is exactly the sound and vibe I fell in love with!

THIS is what should be included on a CD reissue, along with remasters and remixes or b-sides. I am lukewarm on most of the 4 alt versions, and would have been much more likely to pay for another disc if this set was included. As it is, I'm listening with a service I already pay for and haven't dropped cash on the DYOH 25th Anniversary...and I wanted to.

I am considering buying this set on digital, but again, I already pay for a service that provides it. There is really little incentive other than supporting the artist...an artist and management team that has put little to no excitement into this anniversary package. Sorry/not sorry on that. A last minute extra release doesn't cut it, no matter how amazing it is.

EDIT - Yes, the Brothers move forward, not back, and I respect that. But the Surrender set was incredible. And yes, perhaps CDs are for dinosaurs...but this was re-released on CD. The Lowlands content should have been included as incentive to buy the content again.

Well, when they first announced, that there will be only 5 bonus tracks I was like: I have the regular one already, so I'll just buy that 5 bonus tracks and made them into small separate EP.
And then they dropped the Lowlands, that I thought for a moment to be some kind of bonus CD material, but it wasn't so I've just bought all of that bonus material on beatport anyway, making them into 3 separate thingies. :P

Exactly. I think most of us are wondering what the reason is for this decision.

Every day I've listened and wondered if dropping TPPR is a fair trade for the early appearance of HBHG/Mind:Response. Hearing the test material as part of this set is incredible, and we all know how TPPR sounds in a live set. So yeah, I'll take it as it came. But still, it's the frickin' REEL, man!

Maybe these are the most expensive 5 tracks i've ever bought...

54€ the LP set itself
7€ for shipping
10€ custom charges (thank you brexit)
6€ "Auslagepauschale" (there's no translation for this) because the parcel service did an prepayment for the custom charges

that been 15,40€ for each of the unreleased alternate mixes. i didn't include DYOH itself in my calculation because i've already owned it on vinyl & cd and wouldn't have bought it again if the new edition would have come withouth these bonus tracks. and damn, me want's that Lowlands set...

Oh, btw, i have number 826
Title: Re: 25th Anniversary Dig Your Own Hole

The release of Lowlands as digital only is really kinda strange.
Most generous interpretation: they decided very late (i.e. when the vinyls/CDs where already being manufactured) to make the anniversary edition more special.
Least generous idea: they decided that this way, they would cash in twice, because of course the hardcore fans will buy the physical release and want the live recording too.
Title: Re: 25th Anniversary Dig Your Own Hole
Post by: M_O_N_O on Aug 05, 2022, 15:16
My guess: Band/management originally wanted to include Lowlands in the physical edition, but the label cut it because the Surrender Super Deluxe Editions didn't sell and so they decided very late to release the set digital-only instead of simply leaving it in the vaults. No one thought about how the ones who purchased the Deluxe Editions feel about this - because they got exactly what they've ordered and physical music is widely regarded as some kind of merch anyway.
Title: Re: 25th Anniversary Dig Your Own Hole
Post by: shakermaker on Aug 05, 2022, 17:08
I think if it was planned from the start they would have announced it from the start.

As others have said, perhaps this only became a possibility at the last minute.

Another possibility is that legal/ownership limitations prevented them from including the live set on physical media or mentioning it in the main promotions.
Title: Re: 25th Anniversary Dig Your Own Hole

Also, it would've made DYOH a 4CD edition. The concert is just over 79 minutes. It would've had to been split across two CDs. I've never seen official CD releases go past 76 minutes.
Title: Re: 25th Anniversary Dig Your Own Hole
Post by: Stefan on Aug 05, 2022, 19:00
According to Wikipedia, CDs nowadays can hold up to 86 minutes of uncompressed music.

The thought that maybe the super fancy Surrender set did sell below expectations and so this release was kept smaller occured to me today as well.

Interesting! I don't hear it myself, BUT I do hear what sounds like the main pulse from SIFSD when It Doesn't Matter breaks down at 1:41. Different key, but that kind of off-kilter syncopated synth in the background is very reminiscent.

Also, you guys weren't kidding about It Doesn't Matter, huh!? Freakin' beast!

But the USA copies lacks the #4 of standard CD release, which makes the CD1 75:02.

oooh, that's a huge bummer. You should absolutely get a refund of sorts. The scratch goes almost across half of the side so it's pretty much useless. Did you contact them right away after you unpacked it?

I didn't contact immediately after unpacking, it was a few days (life getting in the way and all that). The record still plays, there's just a *pop* every time it hits the scratch. But for 45 quid I expect records shipped to me without scratches/defects on them.

100% agreed. Never, in all of my days of buying vinyl, have I ever seen something like this on a new pressing. Minor imperfections and even skips? Sure. But never like this on a cheap bootleg 12" vinyl, and certainly not on a special limited edition such as this. I can imagine your frustration with no replacement available.

I am still listening to the Lowlands Festival like I'm going to wear out the proverbial wax. This is by far one of my favorite Chemical releases from the entire catalog.

I now have the vinyl! Makes my 25th DYOH celebrations complete, with the CD and vinyl taking their proud places on my shelf. A late achievement of mine, but an achievement nonetheless.  :)

I thought it would be better to post this here instead of posting a new thread. I found this pic posted on Reddit at /r/chemicalbrothers. Has anyone ever seen this album cover art version before? Is this an actual release (whether official or unofficial)? I can't find it listed on discogs in any format.RDT_20230408_2131086041061890301697948.jpg

Could it be a mini disc promo?

Oh, I found this:

Which says:

Bjork's album 'Debut' (1993), reimagined as a dog-eared Penguin paperback novel. A variety of classic albums are being photoshopped in this way in Littlepix's 'Cover versions' group on website Flickr.com.
DYOH is number 7

Has there been an official release be it digitally or physical of the Live at Lowlands 1997 from the Dig your own holy 25 anniversary edition? Or is it only available as streaming on multiple platforms?

It's available for purchase as a part of DYOH 25th Anniversary digital release on Apple iTunes, if that's what you mean by "official".

The release includes: the album, alternate mixes, "Cylinders", and Live at Lowlands.

Hey girls, hey boys,

So I'm looking to get me some 25th Anniversary Dig Your Own Hole, esp. because of the Lowlands recording (I've been waiting for this since 1997)- and I'd like to download the music in lossless quality (flac, wav or aiff.)

So, on 'Qobuz' I can get that for 30$ and on Beatport for 48$. I kinda think that's just a bit much ::mbag  and just wondering if anyone has any Ideas for me.

Thank you, Cheers

My idea might be stupid, but just go with mp3, you aren't loosing that much of quality on those old live recordings anyway.

Chems really should think about an official bandcamp profile to be honest.

Cheaper tickets and more stand alone shows. Maybe.
