Title: Post Your Music (pt 2)
Post by: Enjoyed on Jul 08, 2015, 09:30
PART DEUX

Share with us the fruits of your labour.

My debut album comes out in September, which I'll be annoyingly plugging nearer the time. But for now, here are a bunch of mixes I've made over the past few years...
https://www.mixcloud.com/enjoyed/

They all have a Chemical tune in there apart from Milou and the Spring 2013 mix.

It's Cockos Reaper sequencer (using it 'cause it have more classic workflow like Logic and i'm dont have a Mac) with some VSTs like KORG, Arturia, TAL, XLN, NI for instruments and PSP, FabFilter, Sugarbytes plugins for pre and post processing.
And of course some sample libraries.

Yessss, one of my favorite topic is back, so many great productions, this will be awesome (again).

Anyway , here's one of my tunes, made with my band mate a long time ago (it says 2 years but we finished like 3 years ago)

simplified jazz (https://soundcloud.com/beat-citizens/01-simplified-jazz)

I was still learning about music production back then (even so when I started when I was 16 years old). It's a very simple tune. Now that I learned more, right now I'm working on something new, an album kinda experimental and more complex. It will be ready by the end of this year.

Here's also a mix I did a year ago via stream for a radio show online

https://www.mixcloud.com/Elsabordelbajo/nekcore-transmisi%C3%B3n-003-sdb/

I hope you guys enjoy  ;D

Reminds me of classic DJ Cam or Krush. I like tracks like these aka jazz/hiphop type. Nice one Nek!

Synths come and go. I use mostly the software version of the Korg MS20, lots of drum kits from the Ableton packs (https://www.ableton.com/en/packs/#?instruments=drums), mainly the 909/606/707/808 ones, the acid lines are either a Future Retro Revolution, Mode Machines x0x-rack or MAM MB33 mk2, several other soft synths (Korg Mono/Poly, Arturia Jupiter 8V, Novation BassStation), a Moog Little Phatty, an Arturia Minibrute, and a Juno 106 that I don't use a lot anymore because of several problems. And some external effects : Boss SE70 multi effects (hello Liam Howlett), several distortion pedals (Boss OS2, Boss OD2, MXR Distortion+)...  But really my go-to synth is the MS20 softsynth, it's in almost all of my tracks

Right now I've got :
- Juno 106 (still broken but I finally found an easy way to control it from Ableton, so it'll be better)
- Novation Drumstation (808/909 virtual analog emulation rack)
- Novation BassStation II
- Volca Bass (small but fat)

And I'm counting on that to start making beats again :D

Well congratulations! I don't think too many people around here get a proper album release and coverage by a 'proper' website. Time to update your Discogs page.
Are those comparisons by the the journalist or by you? I liked Come Wander by Delorean, I think I have the album somewhere. And Post Merriweather by Animal Collective.  Caught them at 2013's Field Day in London. They might have been better on an indoor stage, but still good.

Thanks! I'm pretty happy with my Discogs page so far (http://www.discogs.com/artist/2326479-Enjoyed) but I will get updating.

The Animal Collective comparison is in the press release. I've never been shy about my love for them. Delorean is new one though. I've not actually heard their stuff but I will definitely check it out.

This album almost feels unremixable! Go, SIFSD, Just Bang and maybe Born In The Echoes are the only one's I'd be brave enough to touch.

How about an original collaborative forum CD? One rule, every song on the CD has to be a collaboration between at least two forum members. So you send stems back and forth, or remix each others songs, or come up with new ideas with other people, all over the internet. We've got at least 8-10 musically inclined people here and if you team up more than once you could make a ton of cool songs out of that.

I'm actually coming to the states in September, so I'll be a little bit closer. I'm hoping to play a few shows when I'm there if my manager can sort it out.

I know a guy who was briefly on here who I collaborated with 2 years ago, I haven't talked with him in a while, but he sings well enough and does some nice psychedelic rock meets synthpop stuff. https://sonictrampmusic.bandcamp.com/album/universe

And I can sing really loud and slightly on key if you're looking for that!

If we do this album we totally need to name it Born in the Forum.

I have no time to make music, so I am posting old stuff.

Had to make this one in like 2 days since I found out about the remix contest too late:

https://soundcloud.com/n_d_g/demons-ndg-remix

Entered this one in a remix contest and lost. Bad language ahead:

And last, a song I had to make in a day for a grad class, because I love to procrastinate. Not mixed very well, so do not listen to this too loud:

I listened to the Femme feature and I really like it. There's a good variety of different instruments in it and you even managed to sneak in an acid bass! There's a lot going on underneath its "fluffy" summerly surface which makes it an interesting track too.

Here a track named "Nightwalk evaporation" that i finished few months ago on elektron anlog four. This version is not the ultimate, i changed the end to something more emotional. I'm gonna recording it on Ableton

At 4 min 50 to the end it was a "live" version test with reverb, feedback and a live add workout. The original is really different.

Here's my track called ChemTrail Blazers.  Something happened in the making of it that reminded me of The Chemical Brothers and I didn't fight it.  I just dug in.    I'm of the thinking that you can't have too many Chemical Brothers songs, even if this one isn't by the Chemical Brothers.  At least one of you will love it.  Dig it.

So I released my third album Disrupt The Scene this year, featuring collaborations with rappers and vocalists from all over the globe. It was a fun experience going outside my own box by incorporating elements of hip hop and rock within my own production. I got to work with some amazing and talented people who I would love to continue working with. The album has gotten a pretty decent response online too, which is a great feeling. I've been releasing music under the alias Neorev since my debut back in 2003 on The Prodigy fan site compilation Brainkiller Presents Music From The Jilted Generation, which got me my radio debut on Italy's Radio 101. I would spend the next several years working on my first official release Lines & Shapes, mind you I did lose three years worth of music made within that period due to a hard drive failure. Lines & Shapes was my homage to the early 90's old school warehouse rave music that I grew up on, a collection of tunes aimed at the dancefloor. I started going and playing out more around the tri-state area. At the end of 2011, I  released a much darker record called "Children Of The Bomb." I took some inspiration from dubstep and bass oriented music along with my reaction to the social and political climate at the time here in the States. I think that's where the darkness and anger came from in my production. Things really started to pick up after its release and I built on that momentum by releasing supporting EPs over the next couple of years, packed with new and reworked tracks and remixes from fellow producers. I took a break from releasing music and performing during 2014 until I finally released "Disrupt The Scene" at the end of 2015. And here we are now. I've already begun working on its follow up.

"Long Island's Neorev finally returns to the physical format after six years with bona fide "best of" that collects collaborative highlights from his now out of print Bandcamp EPs with some stunning new material, proving, once and for all, that he is the best electronic artist you've never heard of.

Disrupt the Scene carefully celebrates the many modes of electronic dance music without sacrificing artistic integrity in the process. Most of the tracks center on hip-hop, beginning with the opening onslaught of "Sway" featuring rapper Marcuss, who also appears on "So Twisted." Later, Centri brings a Kool Keith weirdness to "Prune Juice" and "Monetary Policy," while Villain completely dominates the hardcore drum & bass of "Rough, Rugged, N' Raw" and the dubstep attack of "Start the Revolution." Kid Versus Chemical even drops jaws on the Wu-Tang-inspired "Smiles and Handshakes." On the other side of the spectrum, It Was July adds an upbeat pop sensibility to "No Control" and "Revolution," but shows range in darker tracks, like "Terrible Sky" and "The Switch," and Noise Generator incorporate their industrial touch in "Shock Wave." It's not just dance music, it's real music borne from electronics, but raised on a rock sensibility that stays away from the average 4/4 thumping you hear in the club.

At this point, Neorev should be Diplo, but he's not, and maybe that's a good thing. He's still an artist who's not afraid to take chances, beholden to no one but himself, and that's perfect."

@ThePumisher

Hey, thanks for listening man! I'm happy you found tracks that you like. I appreciate ya taking the time to give it a spin.

It's funny the divide this album brings...
you got the Sway/Start Revolution I guess more hip hop type fans and then there's the No Control/Rollercoaster rockier fans.
Sway, No Control, Start The Revolution, and The Switch have gotten the biggest reactions.

My goal was to combine these elements of rock and hip hop with electronic music and bring something for everyone to the table.

Now I'm back at square one working on the next release.

If it weren't for your lack of modesty and the fact that this is your first (& only?) post, I might be inclined to make encouraging noises.  It's not bad but I won't be blowing smoke up the ass of anyone who tells me "At least one of you will love it.  Dig it."  That's for us to decide donchathink.

Is Industrial stuff or Skrillex somewhere in your  musical influences?
Personally I'm a sucker for melody, so Rollercoaster and The Switch were the ones that grabbed me.  The piano bit at the end of The Switch almost feels like it could be a break that would lead to the track crashing back in again. And like Pumisher, I wouldn't have minded a longer version. Feel like extending it?

I do like some industrial music, especially Front Line Assembly. Is Nine Inch Nails really industrial though? I also love Meat Beat Manifesto, Gesaffelstein, Atari Teenage Riot, and too much music to list. I guess I do listen to more "darker" music,  I'm a sucker for the aggressive stuff when it comes to writing. I like some of Skrillex's work here and there, but he ends up just sounding the same. I say I probably enjoy more of Excision/Destroid's stuff over Skrillex's. But yeah, the "brostep" scene did sneak its way in there. I started out as a drummer and played in various unsuccessful alternative rock bands when I was younger. So I guess my old rock days find a way to get in there.

Hmm, I never thought of that about the outro of "The Switch," but I am hearing what you guys are saying.
Perhaps I will go back and make an extended mix.  :)
But I wouldn't want to just go back and repeat the same part over again. Trying to think how to come back with something that plays off the main melody, but helps the momentum of the track and lifts it to a fitting end.

It Was July, aka Susan Wintruba from Chicago, is not only is she a great singer, she's a talented producer as well... http://itwasjuly.bandcamp.com

Funny enough, she found me on the official Nine Inch Nails forum and approached me about working on stuff. Our first sorta collaboration ended up being my remix of her track "Don't" and some additional production work for her. "The Switch" was a demo she had sitting around that she was just never really happy with. So she sent me the parts and I did my thing. It originally ended up just being a bonus track for one of her releases, but I went back and did some more mixing and remastering for my album. It ended up being one of the most liked tracks on the my album.

I got this new track that I'm working on that's quite a bit different. It's  been described as Rage Against The Machine meets The Prodigy. I've sent it off to a few of my vocalist friends... while my rapper friends seems a bit scared to approach it lol.  But I think it may be the jumping off point for the next release, we'll see. I do like to switch things up and explore other styles. Each album has had its own feel.

I was just looking for fans of the Chemical Brothers in hopes of finding a few people who might enjoy the song https://kleptonaut.bandcamp.com/track/chemtrail-blazers.  "At least one of you will love it" was meant as a joke, with the idea being that almost all but 1 person will not love it.  There's a unique thing I hear in some of the Chemical Brothers music that I think is great and I love it.  Maybe the song I made has a faint echo of that greatness  I hear in the Chemical Brothers, maybe it's my own imaginings.   This forum would seam to be a good place to ask the question, but it sounds like I asked the question poorly.
I am grateful that this forum is generous enough to allow me to post my song without having to prove my allegiance to either the Chemical Brothers or this forum.  I don't know of many places where I can share my music with the possibility that someone might listen to it  and better yet, might like it.

So 2016 is here... how about a brand new Neorev release?

NEOREV - ACROSS THESE LANDS UNKNOWN]

1. Starlight  04:55
2. The Infinite Abyss  04:40
3. Beyond  05:15
4. Voices Calling Me  02:36
5. Across These Lands Unknown  05:23

"Across These Lands Unknown" is a special release that I have been working on for the last couple of years on the side. I consider this to be more of a concept album, a different mood and feel compared to the usual style aimed at dancefloors and subwoofers. You can say it's like a soundtrack. My own cinematic score to an imaginary movie inside my own head. It all began with the cover artwork, which I used as the main inspiration for its songs. I wanted to do something special for fans and start of the new year with something new and different.

So in mid December I decided to completely stop using a DAW. I purchased a mixer, equipment, and began recording into a Tascam HD-P2 I have had for like 6 years. I am still working out many kinks in my system as the mixer has seen better days.

I have been working a lot on tracks. I do not want to share most of my stuff since I have a plan, but here is a song I do not mind sharing:

Hey all,

I had a quick idea. I know we're not much for formal rules here, but I've noticed a problem with getting feedback in this thread (not just now, but for years), and I'd like to propose something to fix that.

The rule for posting in Post Your Music would be:

You are not allowed to post your own thing until the person who posted before you has received at least one piece of feedback on their thing.

For example, if you want to post your DJ mix, but the person who submitted a song before you hasn't gotten any replies, you (or someone) needs to respond to their work before you post your own thing. Once you respond, then you can go ahead and post whatever. Feedback should probably be at least a sentence or two (not just "nice!" or "wow, shitty"), but that doesn't need to be a hard rule.

I know most of us post to this topic wanting to hear some kind of response.

Let me know if you like or hate this proposal.

In the spirit:

This is quite nice. Something like this has the potential to be really bad, especially when working with samples which may not match tempo or key, but they're manipulated to a good level and don't clash. Has a Massive Attack's Exchange vibe.

If I were you, I'd look into sampling some classic hiphop drum loops and breaks, and turn this into a loungey jazzy trip-hop work! I kept expecting some sort of smooth beat to pop in on your demo.

My answers won't be very technical but...Revontulet is really nice. The high pitch bit that almost sounds like a theramin offsets nicely against the more warm/melodic parts in the foreground, especially from around 1.14 onwards. I'm getting a bit of an M83 vibe from this. (BTW did you do something to the volume around 13 secs?)

How to Survive Inside Sparrow: The melodic bits (0.22-0.40) are really good. The other bits sounded like a demented computer game and would probably do my head in! Can we have another mix without the demented bits?

I agree with Skyscraper on How To Survive Inside Sparrow. The bit-crunch parts are really annoying, but the parts with the piano and synth lead are really nice.

Dolphin Vertigo is very very good!

You mean ambient mix? Like this 2 for example?

- I am thinking about that..but...I realy like how this disbalance, two parts.
I'm not sure I meant ambient. Just your choice of "bit crunch parts" -as WN calls them- seems really harsh. But I understand that you're being playful and trying to offset the "smooth" with the "rough".

As for Dolphin Vertigo, yes it is nice . A random thought hit me about the high pitch beeps at the end of Dolphin Vertigo. They reminded me of the XDR beeps at the start of Side 1 and end of Side 2 of EMI cassettes from the '80s & '90s. Arcade Fire also put the beeps at the begining or end of one of the 'sides' of their Reflector album - presumably for some nostalgic fun.

Hey. I'm looking for a set (actually a track from a set) done by one of you guys here. I think it was the guy who made couple of chemical brothers only mixtapes (not the big mashup ones).
Anyway there was a track which was mixed with Groove Armada's "I see you baby". The vocals of the track were something like "say what.... get on down". I hope the guy will pop out here (I thnk it was a regular forum user)

THANKS!

Edit: OK I searched the old forum and I think it was Brother_Ging and he made music as https://soundcloud.com/the-bc23-experience/
The mixtape was named "sunburner" but it's not around anymore.
ARE YOU HERE?

EDIT number 2: I found it on the old forum

So, hello guys. This is the first track I'll post on this forum. I'm Glenn, and I produce electronic music for about 2,5 years now. I create all kinds of retro sounding tracks, so when I started to listen to the chemical brothers this spring, I also tried to incorporate some of their sounds into my music. So, I'm now working on a great last track for my upcoming fourth album, this track is inspired by the big beat sound and especially private psychedelic reel by the Chemical Bros. It is still a rather short and unfinished version. I would really like to hear of you like it and if there are things I can improve.

Love it, man! My only complaints are with mixing and mastering, and seeing as it's a demo it's not fair to criticize that.

I'd say you really have a song going. IMO to add more to the song expand on parts that are less melodious - I don't mean harsh, but more groovy without a many-note melody like the one that currently runs the whole way through. If you listen to a lot of Chemical Brothers songs they're deceptively simple with how few notes they use. Trade back and forth "groove" parts and breaks with the melodious stuff you have going on, you'll have a tune.

Hey, thank you for listening! I'm currently expanding the song, and I agree, there should be some more not melodic parts and such. I will post the track here when everything is finished.

Sometime in the near future, a few friends of mine are going to take over the lobby of our university's engineering building (futuristic, vaulted ceiling, walkways and suspended replicas of famous space vehicles) and put on an IDM / electronica show. There's a good chance I'd DJ, and I started thinking of what Chemical Brothers songs would work in this context - b-sides and offbeat choices, ones with an abundance of psychedelic and wild synth sounds, but importantly, still high energy and dance-able. Ended up spiraling into a full mix! I wanted to provide an alternate experience to the studio versions by editing and bleeding the songs into each other more than usual.

The show hasn't happened yet, but when it does I think I'm going to VJ / improvise lights over it, instead of mixing it live (which ATM doesn't interest me). I'll post video if it happens!

Tracklist

1. Epacse Yticolev
2. We Are The Night
3. Studio K
4. Don't Stop the Rock

6. Dissolve
7. Golden Dub

11. I'll See You There
12. Song to the Siren (12")
13. Open Up
14. Radiate
15. Please Help (Outro)

Just downloaded and listening to it right now. Starts off pretty nice. You did some special editing to the Escape part, didn't you? Seems like there's some self-programmed synth going on there, no?

Good luck with your show! Hope it's gonna be a ton of fun and the crowd's appreciating your work and the chems tunes!

Maybe you can squeeze in some of these too?

- Don't Think
- Silver Drizzle
- No Need
- Clip Kiss
- Base 6
- The Duke
- Nude Night
- H.I.A.
- Galaxy Bounce 93-03 version (for dramatic build-up)

Nope! It's just the outro of the 12" version of EV in reverse. The one addition was the We Are The Night Sunshine Underground intro squelch, you can hear it subtly at :37.

I might try adding some of those suggested songs guys. Ending of Studio K through to Dissolve is kinda lacking IMO, maybe a few additions could ease the transitions? The struggle is to keep it an hour long set since I'll be sharing the festival with a few other people, and I don't want to pull a Kings of Leon :D

Sweeeeet indeed! 'When I'm Flupped Up' has so much energy and attitude. Super tasty!

My only suggestion, which I know is kinda useless as you record it all live, would be to try and cut down that open hi-hat sample in St*rb*y so that it doesn't have that slightly extraneous closing sound at the end. It felt just a tad too isolated at the beginning and jarred me from the kick rhythm.

That's me forts anyway. Thanks for sharing.

I see what you mean. For sure. I am fairly sure it is a byproduct of the compression. On the sr-16, I have it at tune -3 or -4. If I ever revisit, I'll probably end up trying out a different hi hat as I kind of use that specific one a lot. To be frank, the part I like most is the weird screaming volca bass. Thanks for listening!

And to Resonance: Sounds dark, i think i even heard a bit of some of the more electronic Dark Wave in it, like a modern version of Anne Clark (without the vocals). But nice work.

Enjoyed this. My interest increased when the beats came in. Random words that popped into my head: Sabres of Paradise, EBW9, the dreamier (and also harder?) side of 90's Trance.
I think i might have actually liked more vocal overdubs (or more evenly distributed perhaps). But hey what do I know? It's late and I may be talking out my a$$.

Last night my radio station participated in Vinylthon for Record Store Day 2018, playing nothing but vinyl records for 24 hours (Friday evening - Saturday evening).

I ended up filling in for a 1-2am shift and did an all Chemical Brothers set. It's rough, not beatmatched at all, and, well, analog (levels not matched, some distortion, line noise from one of the turntables) but y'all might enjoy it!

Chemical Brothers on Wax - 69 minutes, 15 tracks

Elektrobank 12" - A Side, track 1
Electronic Battle Weapon 8/9 - 8 Side
Exit Planet Dust 2xLP - D Side, track 1

EDIT: So. It turns out I've never heard those Harpoon tracks before... I don't suppose any one has any deliciously tasty rips of those bad boys do they?

Haven't found time to listen to white noise's session, but now I'm interested in those harpoons. I know Harpoon and Snooprah - what else is there?

These are old solo tracks by Tom, released as 'Harpoon' on a 12" with fellow Ariel member, Matt Berry. I don't know how I didn't know they existed. But they're very tasty.

Were you on the previous version of the forum? WN took us on a little Harpoon adventure with a thread, a vinyl purchase and a rip.  Someone then took WN's audio and uploaded it to YT, as per THIS (http://etc.thechembase.com/public/chemicalbrothersforum/forum.thechemicalbrothers.com/index4c37.html?/topic/9779-tom-rowlands-harpoonb-dat-1993/) thread.
Oh here's the original THREAD. (http://etc.thechembase.com/public/chemicalbrothersforum/forum.thechemicalbrothers.com/index48b2.html?/topic/9526-lost-1993-tracks-from-tom/). Which I'm very kind to find for you cos it's 2am and I have beer in me.

**EDIT** While we're on the subject of those Harpoon tracks, am I the only one who thinks the pitched up sounding vocal noise on Pine may have been sampled from My Bloody Valentine's Soon (https://youtu.be/yOBn50HHbRs?t=1m50s) ? There's an acapella right at the end of Soon.
(Say no if you disagree, cos otherwise I won't know!)

I forget what the exact period was that I stopped coming here for a little, but it seems to be right when A LOT of big forum things happened. Bummer. But nice that we have the archived version that I can be creepy and peruse like a stalker from the future.

I'm listening to this now. It sounds GREAT. Did you boost the bass at all? It's coming through so much fuller than a 128kbps mp3 has any right to.

EDIT: So. It turns out I've never heard those Harpoon tracks before... I don't suppose any one has any deliciously tasty rips of those bad boys do they?
Nothing intentionally boosted. Might just be the magic of vinyl. We were using a 15+ year old crossfader as our phono preamp, which I kept in the yellow and red for most of the show. That could have nicely saturated the signal on top of the vinyl clarity.

I might do a higher quality rip of those Harpoon tracks sometime soon, now that I have access to a better turntable and that preamp. There'll be less line noise in Pine this time.

In April I collaborated with a computer graphics professor at Purdue to create a Vaporwave visual mixtape with digitized CGI demos ripped from VHS. This was displayed in a local art gallery along with other students' digital art. Here's the full 12 minute video:

https://vimeo.com/267238687

And the individual tracks w/o segues:

Let me know if you trainspot any of the samples, I bet you'll recognize a few of them. The compositions were completely sample based.

Very very nice, Noise! Love Are You sure.. and Changes to Untitled. Refragment is cool too, sort of a slowed down, laid-back reverb-bit-crush monster, love the title.

And I go doot, doot doot! Do I hear bits of Chico's Groove Mix2 in Changes too?

Over the last few weeks I've been putting together a DJ mix for a Halloween party a group of friends of mine are putting together and all DJing for. It's something of a sample-based big beat hip hop mix that blends all kinds of old and new styles together. Think you guys will really like it.

Here's the link to listen (with tracklist):

Nice.
1) Did you mix it all on software or use CDJs/USBs?
2) Are you turning into a long haired stoner dude?  :o

Thoughts on the tunage: Really enjoyed the first 25 minutes. Good music for my push ups & sit ups. Made me think of other big beat type stuff that might fit, like C'mon Cincinatti by Delakota or one of the remixes of Kid Loco's Love Me Sweet.  Then it took a turn for the "downtempo" between Properly Relaxed (26 mins) and The Moment Seizes Us. I guess those tunes aren't my cup of tea so much, and perhaps felt a bit "late night" for the time I was listening. I felt like it got back to what I like (or expected?) for the last ten minutes.

I realise you didn't ask for an opinion but...couldn't resist.

Software, in two ways. I test my setlists out in MixMeister Express so I can make edits and test out loops / filters on the transitions without doing it live, and once I have that perfected I export the edits and songs and bring it into Mixxx where I hopefully don't screw everything up.

Big curly haired dude - did grow my hair out, sometimes you just need a change! That photo is from a river cruise I and a few friends got to DJ for as well.

Part of the goal of the mix was to explore how other genres of music explore the same styles and influences as the first part straight-big-beat section of the mix. A year ago a buddy of mine played this at a party:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vM8yW3qxMs

and it struck me how much of a natural extension of big beat - particularly Fatboy's "party" style - that track was. So this mix is supposed to be a culmination of that fascination.

Might be cutting Hesitation out of the mix, I like the track and the way it mixes but it does keep the tempo down for perhaps a bit too long. Still figuring out how to make it all how I want it to be.

You can definitely hear chem's influence in last 3rd of 1st track
Made these in the spring as I wanted to make a bunch of stuff before I moved apartments. Most of the stuff I made I want to revisit/sample/use as DJ tools. But, these 2 stood out as I made them a few days apart and screamed "2 song release" to me. I'd love to do an EP again, but work has been mental for last 9 months. I have very little time to do music these days, so this is a celebration of stuff I did make

So you didn't like the chorus and decided to replace it with something a bit tougher?
Understandable, although I'm not sure I heard the word "Go" in there anywhere. It might be nice to hear Q-tip say "Go" at some point (could you replace "Hey" with a "Go" vocal sample? I don't like the "Hey"!), and it might be nice to get the bridge/middle 8 bit, and also a less sudden ending.
Also in the intro, the music seemed to be panned to one side too much [edit:that was my headphones; they're f&*ked!]. And it's really short. Have you got a longer version?
I like the aim of toughening it up. I always thought the original chorus section was really cheesy, so it's nice to hear a less cheesy version.

Since my last comment I listened to about 7 or 8 of the other (100++) entries Here (https://www.eventideaudio.com/contest/itchycoo) and none of them were as good as the Biff mix. I'm not just saying this because you're on the forum. Most of the other ones I could barely get through (boring!), but I've listened to the Biff mix a few times now - I probably should have refreshed the page to show the true play count...

My thoughts about winning the comeptition (like I have a clue!) are that the Chems might not win either (under a pseudonym) because they sometimes defy the rules of what"should" be done. I guess it will depend on the attitude of the judges.

As per Androidgeoff I genuinely enjoyed this. Love the way the drums drop out and then come back after the "Hey" (1.24 and 4.12), the vocal backmasking, the layers of sound, the little sequenced melody at 3.28, the sheep (?) noises circa 4.15. I really hope this does well. Let us know who wins - I bet it won't be as enjoyable.

So the winners were announced and collated in one soundcloud list Here. (https://www.eventideaudio.com/contest/itchycoo) You forgot to tell us Biff!

I don't understand what's great about the winner. Is it technically good? Maybe it is, but I just don't get it in terms of an enjoyable version/remix.

They gave three people joint 2nd place, and one of those, the Amæthron mix was one of the ones I had already heard. The intro section on this mix is quite original, and it's probably the most adventurous of the tracks that they picked out. But the "dance-y" stuff that kicks in around 2.30 sounds like something Marusha would have played in 1994 (well, she wouldn't really). Glitchy Gabber Rock or something. It's horrible!! What were they thinking??

Most of the other Honourable Mentions (Traditional) just seem a bit safe and boring. And the Honourable mentions (Creative) were...not nice! There's no accounting for taste.

Lol, yeaaah. I got the email yesterday about the winners. I was surprised that even though they doubled the honorable mention category, it still didn't make it. You were probably right on them having an ideal remix in mind.
Onward to the next remix contest! 🐎

Really dig your remix, Biff! Besides the honorable mentions of Chems work by Whitenoise, your sound also reminds me a bit of Consumer's Machines in Danger which he contributed to the Forum CD.

So, Papergod is your pseudonym name?

That's some fairly uncompromising techno there, Geoff.
I'm Freakin's bleeps remind me a bit of Tricky Disco By Tricky Disco and other early 90s stuff. Whilst the "pew pew" sounds around 3.11 have me thinking of EBW9.

So can anyone get their stuff put on Spotify, or do you have to jump through lots of hoops and hopefully be adjudged good enough by someone at Spotify?

Are you looking to just get on Spotify or would you like to get on a bunch of sites?

I use Distrokid for distribution. It is only $20 per year and they don't take anything from your royalties. You keep 100%. They get you on Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, Amazon, Google Play, Deezer, and many more... even Beatport. From what I've heard, Beatport are the only ones that are very picky about what gets on their site. But my old album Lines & Shapes got on Beatport with no problems. I've never had an issues with any of the other stores. It is quick to sign up with Distrokid and simple and easy to upload your music to stores. They take care of it all. I've gotten up in some stores within 48 hours after uploading my album. Usually within 5 days, your release is out across all platforms. Distrokid also gives you the ability to control your Spotify Artist page. Upload your logo or image and bio, etc. You can pay a little bit more if you want the ability to upload music under two different aliases and there's even a label option if you're releasing multiple artists. I've been using them for 4 years now. There's other distribution sites where you don't have to pay a yearly fee, but they take a percentage from your sales. Distrokid doesn't take a penny from your sales. But Distrokid doesn't own your music. You still have full control. So you can easily pull your releases from stores if you don't like them with a simple click of a button. They'll be pulled from all stores within a week. Then you can go to another distribution service and have your music distributed through them if you choose to make a change.

If you want to use Distrokid, this will give you a 7% discount on the annual fee...
https://distrokid.com/vip/seven/575270

You can search me on stores as Neorev. I got a few albums and EPs out through them.

But uhhh...you still have to sign up and give details of your website and other "pro" stuff which I didn't have the imagination to fake.

Even if it isn't good, I've been wanting to do this experiment for months, but couldn't get a clean Acapella. Finally did a Semi-clean Acapella (though, if you got good headphones like me, you can still faintly hear Noel in the background) Added some TNK sound effects but I think they're a hit/miss.
what do you guys think, Sound effects or no sound effects?

EDIT: I've added the version with no effects It still has my effects like the reverse cymbol at the end, but no Beatle effects.

I vote no sound effects. Where did you get your LFB instrumental parts from, Here? (https://remixpacks.ru/load/2/rock-1-0-6270/)
There's a very clean Galvanize (https://remixpacks.ru/load/2/breaks-1-0-6094/) acapella on that website, BTW.

Off-topic now but the Talking Heads "Once In A Lifetime" parts are kinda funny. David Byrne's yelpy lead vocal sounds weird when isolated. And as well as the bass guitar line, you really notice the "dum dum dum" bassline sung by one of the band - I thought it was fake at first but when you listen back to the proper song, it's in there.

I got it from here, but you can still faintly hear Noel's singing in the background (as most fanmade instrumental have) and the cowbells are missing in this , I tried cleaning it up more in audacity but it didn't sound good.

3 years ago I did a 2 part mix of Chemical Brothers stuff, that I could describe as what their live could sound like if they did it à la Daft Punk Alive 2007.
Today I came back to it thinking of doing a 3rd part, then realised all of the files I used were MP3. So before doing anything new, I spent the evening replacing everything with FLAC files (or CD WAV rips when I didn't have the FLAC), so it all sounds better now.

You can listen to it here (although it will be in a crappy streaming quality)

To pass the quarantime, I've been recording some lo-fi music outside the DAW using a basic looper pedal, a mic, some effects, and whatever instruments I've got in the house.

All hardware, everything's improvised and recorded live straight to a stereo track as a jam, then edited manually in Audacity into a shorter track. Big part of the sound is micing synths up rather than going direct in, using the vocal harmonizer to haphazardly pitch-shift instruments out of their normal ranges, and the noises of a cheap 80s Yamaha PSS-170 keyboard that I'm stretching as far as I can.

Two ambient synth works, the first is extremely "Latenight Psychtronic Mix" and the other Stars of the Lid inspired:

https://soundcloud.com/cablecaleb/200328-once-it-all-dries-out
https://soundcloud.com/cablecaleb/200328-to-know-a-date

A more frenetic space-disco jam:

https://soundcloud.com/cablecaleb/bossnova

And a psych-pop track based on a 5-bar loop I play guitar and sing on (whoops):

What is "micing"? Filtering before sending it to the recording device?

Surely WN means using microphones (mic's) instead of directly inputting the instruments into a PC/mixing desk?

PS, WN, "pass the quarantime"? I'm nicking that.

Haha it's what Skyscraper said - using a microphone to capture the audio from the synth's onboard speaker instead of the line out, like in the picture! Gives the simple sounds texture. The speaker resonates and distorts, you can hear the action of the keys getting hit, floorboards creaking, etc.

The Microkorg doesn't have a built in speaker, I'm thinking of running it through a guitar amp instead.

It's unlike anything I've heard, for sure. It's weirdly empty to have the shaker unaccompanied for the first 30 seconds, ambience is needed there. The guitar line is looped out of time from the rest of the song which creates an interesting polyrhythm, but it doesn't sound intentional? I like the colors you've used, the vocal processing.

There's interesting things happening together here but it doesn't all add up to something fascinating.

Really mad at how well these two songs go together, this honestly could've gone really far back in the day when Ghosts n Stuff was taking off. Good off the wall ear to hear how these fit.

Mixing wise, this is hard to listen to because of how fucking SLAMMED your master limiter is. If it was intentional, it's just not gluing the mix together like it should.

If it's not intentional here's my quick rundown of what's happening - your master output has a fast hard limiter on it that turns down the volume when a sound momentarily passes a threshold of "too loud". This is a good thing to do for safety (setting a hard limiter at 0db prevents clipping) but here MOST of the song is too loud. So when any single part passes the db threshold the entire song gets turned down, which distractingly ducks the guitars, the bassline, the vocals, etc just because a snare hit was too loud. The waveform and master meter might look consistent, but really there's noticable waving volume fluctuations throughout.

Basically just turn all your parts down by 6 to 12db and re-balance their levels. Then you can carefully turn the master / limiter pre-gain up to make the song uniformly loud enough without abusing the limiter.

Got it. I'll see what I can do to balance it out.
Been craving to mix the two ever since I heard let forever be the first time, but I kept getting frustrated with the vocals and couldn't isolate them properly, so I dug around and ripped em from various concerts and DJ sets. Even though it's hard to hear it, there is piano in the background of the 2nd verse, and it also works well, for a bizarre reason

Youtube's Recommendations algorithm sent me a weird video so I took it and made it into a crappy demo reminiscent of 90s Techno/Trance Music. Ignore the typo in the video

I might not finish it but hey, worth a shot

I like! Pretty nicely put together. Good addition of those choir-like synth sounds and that subtle mini-melody which sounds like an electric organ(?) type of instrument. Your in- and outro are cool, too, with the abrupt pedal triggering and plug pulling sound and the static buzzing at the end.

Very cool. I like both versions. The melody is good, the atmosphere dreamy and I like its overall structure. The updated version has some nice additions, especially that spacey sound effect in the intro part.
It reminds me of the heydays of this forum's bedroom production sharing phase with Soundertow, Mippio, Slipvin, ChemicalReaction, BenJ and all the other talents. This could have been a track on our forum CD.

NEOREV
TRAVELING AT A HIGH VELOCITY ON A DOWNWARD TRAJECTORY (2002 - 2005)

After nearly 20 years, I think it is time to share my old unreleased and unfinished lost rave album written back in 2002-2005. I had a little following amongst Prodigy fans thanks to having my music on some fan compilation albums created by fan forum communities. I even got radio play in Italy on Radio 101 thanks to my appearance on the Brainkiller Presents Music From The Jilted Generation compilation series in 2003. I dug up the old raw demos and shared them on YouTube. I sadly lost all the project files and sounds in a hard drive crash. Three years of work went poof. Some of my old tracks have popped up on various YouTube channels. So figured it's time to say "What the hell" and share it with the world. At the time, I was a fresh faced, naive teenager, who was still a noob at music production and trying to find my sound. Just some fun rave music and heavy breaks inspired by the 90s warehouse rave scene.

15 tracks + 12 bonus tracks, additional artwork, & text file w/ download link to original raw & unmastered demos

Bandcamp Friday begins (aka Midnight Pacific time / 3AM EST) on February 5th, 2021. It will run for the next 24 hours. During this time, Bandcamp removes their revenue share. And if you buy the album during it, feel good knowing 100% of the sales will go direct to the artist. For the Bandcamp release, I did some EQ work and remastering to give the tracks a little more oomph. But as a bonus, the Bandcamp download will include a TXT file with the bonus items. This TXT file includes a Dropbox link to the untouched original raw MP3 demos so you can hear the album as it was from nearly 20 years ago.

Available Now:

Thank you all so much for your support!

It cracks me up, too! Same with the moans, but I took them out since I was going to have this playing outside with little trick-or-treaters and parents around. I had to butcher the MC Chris song as well.

So, when looking for that David S Pumpkins song, I found out a little info that music nerds may appreciate. The music sample originated in a song called Holiday Rap (below, around 3:08). In my opinion the song is....not very good. Like, very, very bad. But apparently Ben Liebrand was involved with production and couldn't use Madonna's Holiday (which SOUNDS like it is sampled) so he just recreated the music with that bit. Ah, the 80s!

Ok, now I had to look this up as I didn't have a clue what y'all were talking about.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rS00xWnqwvI

I mean, on paper it's probably not funny, but yeah it kind of is. Reminds me of the days when Hanks was primarily a comedy actor. Might be nice if he would go back to that at some point.
Is the elevator guy one of the Keenan & Kel guys? The one who didn't die?

We don't get SNL on this side of the pond but we kinda know what it is. There was an episode where Saoirse "Hanna" Ronan did a sketch playing an Irish air hostess on an Irish airline, and there were numerous mentions of "a dog on the runway". This left Irish people wondering if an SNL script writer had visted Ireland and come across a lot of dogs. People also questioned why Ms Ronan chose to partake in something that BAD that was meant to poke fun at Ireland but um, just wasn't very funny...

Oh god, I remember this thing (thanks for reminding me ::) ). Complete novelty record. Not one of those tracks that pops up on "best of the 80s" documentaries or compilations.

I don't know if anyone cares but the melody during that "break" at 3:08 is the melody from Summer Holiday by Cliff Richard & The Shadows (https://www.discogs.com/master/182405-Cliff-Richard-And-The-Shadows-Summer-Holiday). *
I actually prefer the rearrangemnt of the notes in that Pumpkins thing (which I've never heard before).

*The Shadows are kinda respected in hip hop circles because their track Apache was covered by The Incredible Bongo Band and then sampled a gazillion times.

Post by: MathsDX on Nov 08, 2022, 07:48
Last week The Crystal Method collaborated with The Drone Pilots to put out a mix of unreleased/ new versions of original tracks, and other remixes from both TCM and other artists with a couple of Chemical Brothers tracks thrown in too.
As I noted that there was a parallel thread in the FAQ on TCM, there might be additional interest in this mix I did with The Crystal Method so I'm happy to share this here:

There was nothing wrong with posting in the Crystal Method thread, but this whole MUSIC RESPONSE section of the forum is for all things to do with Chems music.

I know Satu8 mentioned the "post your own music" thread, I think he meant the one in THE SOCIAL section, which is Here (https://forum.thechembase.com/index.php/topic,146.240.html#msg30356)

So either post your Crystal Method related things to the Crystal Method thread, or post them in the Post Your Music thread, but whichever of those two threads you choose, can you please stick to that thread?

Come on, Krabbs, don't be too harsh. the user even made the effort to search for a TCM thread and also addressed it in the second post. I'd rather have minor things like that than nonsensical spam bots any day of the week :)

I'll admit, though, that it would have been nice if the OP had just briefly introduced her-/himself before plugging something.

Thanks for the support, I do admit that I am unfamiliar with the workings/ sections here, and actually wasn't sure where to post it as I just wanted to share the mix as I figured there would be interest in all things Chems and TCM. And thanks to the Admins for moving it to a more appropriate section.

Not much more to say by way of intro or plugging The Drone Pilots, as this was mainly about TCM. Enjoy!

Edit Chembase Team: moved to here.

I take some responsibility here and apologize to MathsDX for any confusion. I listened to and enjoyed the mix, and thought others might as well. The mix was placed in a Crystal Method section of the forum that is less visited and not associated with user productions so I suggested they try here for more exposure.

Whether or not the new person should have introduced themselves before dropping a mix can be up for debate (I think it is a fair request), but this forum can be difficult for someone jumping into the convo. I was a lurker member for years in the OG format before becoming somewhat active because it wasn't a very welcoming group if you weren't already part of it. I don't feel it's that way anymore, but we certainly could have done better here.  Besides, we are in a stale period here and new mixes of classic trax should be a good thing, and it's fair to say TCM has crossover appeal here for some.

And as someone who listened to the mix, there are 2 brief but effective nods to the Brothers in there.  So, my bad, I was being welcoming and enjoyed the mix.

Take the lesson on introducing yourself, MathsDX, but also feel free to bring fresh takes and ideas into the group moving forward. And maybe mix up a ChemBros mix for us in the future...😀

(And moving forward, my own lesson will be to add links...it's more helpful.)

Well, not a request, rather something I would do if I was new to a fan site where nobody knows me or, in general, wherever I'd meet new people in real life. I would feel awkward stopping by, not saying hi and just drop a link. But that's just me.

I took a habit since 2011 of making a roughly 1h15 mix each year with my favourite tracks of the year. I also took a bad habit of not releasing it on time for years where I didn't have enough time/enough music that inspired me.

This past week marked exactly 20 years since I recorded my first "DJ mix" which was essentially a 20 minute practice run beat matching a couple songs (including HIA, since the Come With Us 12" was one of the first records I ever bought!). Even if it was just a goofy little thing, it obviously had a big impact on me going forward. Since then I've DJed on a semi-regular basis, with ebbs and flows between being very much a hobby to more professional gigs. I've maintained a pretty decent collection of 12"s over the years but along the way stopped playing as much dance music and focused on other genres.

Anyway, the reason for the preamble here is that, while the timing of this as it relates to that first recording is mostly coincidental, I finally finished and released a mix this week! I haven't put a set out in nearly 15 years but I'm quite proud of this one! It was recorded in one shot straight from vinyl, and includes some records I've had nearly as long as I've been collecting, right up to one's picked up in the last couple months.

Chemical Siblings will recognize a lot of this, as well as a couple nods to DJ sets from the Brothers as well. I hope you enjoy!

Always forget how under-appreciated Kylie's Slow (Chemical Brothers Remix) is. Sure, it likely was a label request. But the squeally acid synth and drum lines drive hard! I still need to find this on vinyl. I approve of this addition to the mix.
