Yep, we're talking about it here. (https://forum.thechembase.com/index.php/topic,1074.40.html)  Let's rave about in here when it drops on Friday!

Yeah, Stefan in another thread pointed out their insta message with all the albums' covers and something like "what's next?". Does sound promising, doesn't it? I mean, have they ever released a new track just for RSD in the past? Also, Ed mentioned (https://forum.thechembase.com/index.php/topic,2509.msg25219.html#msg25219) en passant that they were working on new stuff.

Too many threads, don't know where to respond   :D
But I guess the song deserves it's own thread.

On Social Media, the Chems posted a short video teaser, so maybe we also get a music video? Looks very much like the style of Kate Gibb.

Whoa, getting goosebump just from that! Sounds so very Chemical. The melody already has been stuck in my head for a couple of hours.

If that's true, the fact that Apple has their hands on it already, and utilizing it, is really interesting. I'm curious if "The Darkness That You Fear" is featured on a soundtrack of an upcoming Apple + series/movie.

Oh a 42 second edit? Ok.
It certianly seems very upbeat/positive. I can see what BenJ means about the swoon similarities.

I'm guessing the Chems sent the track out to a number of media type outlets. How else did the lyrics appear online before it had officially debuted?

EDIT: Oh it's a longer 1.20 edit of the track at the end. The guitar bit near the end sounds kinda Peter Hook influenced.

Hope Apple paid a good fee, Brothers gonna work it out somehow without being able to play shows.

The Avalanches commented fire emojis on one of the song's instagram posts. Musically it's as if the Out of Control Remix they did, and this new single were made collaboratively with both bands in the room.

that's what I was thinking too. when the track name was released, I kind of half-ass went thru movies that would be coming out soon on streaming channels and see if there was a connection. I first thought 'maybe the track would be for some horror movie or some space adventure on netflix. But when the track preview came out, I laughed because it sounds the complete opposite and feel of the track name.

I wonder though if possible which movie this track would be for on apple tv. (I doubt if any of us have it)

But then again, it's been two years since NG, and we only saw T and E and handful of times in the studio from their social medias.

I don't think it's a one-off, or an album, or some movie! I think it's something else.......BIGGER!

I did notice every song played was colour themed to tie in with the keynote theme. Maybe they even commissioned some artists to create colour themed songs. Unless the others were old.

Fist listen reaction:
I love it ! The 6 minute version did not disapoint, it's a rollercoaster. The instrumental conveys really well what the lyrics are saying, with cheerful and upbeat parts taking over the calmer bits that sound melancholic, full of doubt and uncertainty. This song is exactly what we need right now, something to tell us that it's going to be allright after dark times.

Maybe the visuals from the video will be the artwork for the RSD release!

I'm getting some vibes from BenJ's post about the rollercoaster stuff about the track. I now have a slightly higher expectation about this track that was made with so much in consideration with the covid epidemics downward spiral and the pending light at the end of the tunnel.

I got several hours to kill till I get the release over here in the states. Six minutes is more than enough, and I like that.

What a delightful song, it fits well with other NG-Era music  :)

It couldn't feel more different to MAH though.
How to describe it to someoe who hasn't heard it? Light, optimistic, quirky electro-pop, perhaps.

I like it but I don't love it. It doesn't feel like an EBW in the sense that it's not quite clubby enough. I would expect it to feature in their forthcoming gigs (if they go ahead) but I'm not sure it would become an indispensible part of the live set in the long run.

Oh also, I think I like the edit as much as, if not more than the 6 minute version. My attention begins to wander a bit during the longer version. It doesn't feel like an epic journey (Escape Velocity) or a big groove (CHEMICAL) so I'm not sure that it needs to be long/extended. Four minutes might just be enough.

Nice to have new Chems though. The music fits quite well with the closing moments of the Apple video with it's sunny spring vista (not that I'm an Apple fanboy). I wouldn't be surprised if this tune ends up on some other upbeat footage/adverts at some point.

after a couple of listens...

This should've been the last track to the No Geography album!

Otherwise the track is very good! Trying to figure out that robo singing at the end (Tom perhaps?)

That sample though....just magical, and a perfect fit for such a track.

I get some reflections from the Surrender album for some reason about this track

I'm really impressed.

It's a perfect anthem for a dreamer, like myself. The way I hear this song is the way how I feel when I get caught up in the euphoric parts of daydreaming. With really no place to go for the last year+,  the only place I could escape was in dreams. So to put it bluntly, I've been dreaming quite a bit lately.

Thanks Tom and Ed for such a marvelous track.

If this is our first missive from Chem10 it's a very promising one, if it's our requisite corporate loosie (https://forum.thechembase.com/index.php/topic,1590.msg18737.html#msg18737) for the No Geography era then Record Store Day feels like a pretty noble cause to devote it to - also upon first full listen it's just a great track, pretty high-ranking even, playing to several Chems strengths at once and benefiting a weirdly large amount from their recent feedback loop with The Avalanches (https://www.whosampled.com/sample/470218/The-Avalanches-Light-Up-The-Bugaloos-The-Senses-of-Our-World/). Can't wait to see which hyperexpressive avant-garde theater person or out-of-nowhere blockbuster film star Smith & Lyall get to lipsync to it on the summer tour visuals.

Video trainspotting.
The girl at 1.44 (in the Chems vid) with long curly-ish hair. I recognise her. I think she was one of "the twins" who used to dress the same. If I can find the original footage I'll post it here.
Also the footage around 1.16 (in the Chems vid) with the corrugated iron barn walls (oh it's an aircraft hangar near Ipswich) - think I've seen that before too.
Old early 90s 1989 rave footage.
.
.
.
EDIT: Found her(them)!  The twins from 21.35 to 23.35 below. They're funny. They might be in the same barn aircraft hangar I mentioned above.
Also the footage at 15.55 to 16.45 (dancing on the speaker truck) looks v similar to the bit at 3.42 in the Chems vid. I'm sure it's the same truck/rave.

EDIT2: The guy at 1.15 in the chems video is at 0.23 below

I love it too for the same reasons. It works really well, listened to it all day after buying it from iTunes at the stroke of midnight down here. The 6min version is great you don't even notice it goes for that long.

The break down stripped bare to the floating horns is quite therapeutic/meditative and the whole song throughout with all the sfx.

Its quite light and familiar of that manchester sound for sure. I got Here To Stay vibes from it.

That archival rave footage I used to watch from time to time a while back too. Love how its been used for a video clip of theres now!

Typically most Chemical Brother tracks feel open for interpretation, but after watching the music video it feels like the message here is a bit on the nose. Very effective, Ruffmercy.

If this leads the way to a new album like that French article suggests, I'm a happy guy.

What a track ! allready listened to it 10 times. love the vibe, the construction, the sounds. exactly what we need right now. the lockout anthem ! Chems are the strongest to get out summer and shining tracks, it's quite insane ! Some "surrender" spirit in it with "no geography" sound designing.
I love it. don't think it will work in live but i ask to be surprised !

if i have to give a mark, 8/10 !

That actually worked out great! If the shoe fits then wear it  ;D

I myself played TDTYF in my mind ,but with the drum pattern borrowed from No Geography.

I think the new track will kick in somewhere mid-set when the bros go back on live.

I'm really loving this. Especially the full length, so many magical moments in there.

Personally I get more of a WATN feel than any other album. It feels like a spiritual successor to A Modern Midnight Conversation. It's got that big, bright, colourful electro sound going on too.
Definitely can see this being a big live hit. Though I also understand where Wolken and others are coming from with it not quite being their best. It could drift in and out of the set within a year or two - but that is because they have so many other absolutely legendary pieces of music, it would be hard to compete.

Super excited for what definitely feels like an album on its way. With or without this slab of Chemical Avalanche, it's going to be great!

paulfullerphoto007 on Instagram, clued us in about the origin of the artwork.

It's a piece by Terry Frost titled 'Yellow and Black Sun'

Edit: "Black Sun"

http://www.artnet.com/artists/terry-frost/black-sun-6IphchPsut26R9tkiPyvHA2

This is what @designmuseum (https://instagram.com/p/COIM07uJ3vj) have to say about this:

Quote

The sleeve for The Darkness That You Fear is from an artwork called 'Black Sun, 1978' by the revered British abstract artist, the late Sir Terry Frost (https://www.instagram.com/sirterryfrostestate). And the additional design layout comes courtesy of Tom Hingston (https://www.instagram.com/hingstonstudio).

Tom Hingston: "I've always been a big fan of Terry Frost's work, but when the band suggested this image, it was a piece I hadn't actually seen before. A joy to work with! It has a kind of vibrational quality, which seems to form a perfect synergy with the track."

This was released on my 50th Birthday after a very difficult year...we all had difficult years, right? I will always associate this track with my milestone and remember how it made me all emotional. And then, of course, the forum went down for a few days and I couldn't tell you about the dust in my eyes.

I've listened to the edit and the extended several times each and still haven't picked a favorite. I almost always gravitate to the longer cuts but I'm still undecided on this one: unlike some edits, this shorter version doesn't feel like it's missing anything. For me, this song invokes balance as a companion piece to No Geography (the track): funny enough, I've always wished that one was a bit longer.

I'm really looking forward to more new material.

Unless I missed it, I haven't seen this link posted yet, but it definitely seems like we'll get a B-side, rather than this being a single-sided release, which the brothers have done often in the past.

If I had to take a wild guess, I'll probably be a remix by some other dj or group.

Or, the radio edit

Or, a shelved b-side from NG (which I would prefer)

My bet is for a (more or less average) remix, even though i would prefer - like inchem - a b-side.
But streaming has killed b-sides because no one is releasing proper singles anymore [was any of the last "singles" released as chemsd?]...

I don't have the producer ear like y'all, but was thinking maybe the underlying piano stabs could lead to Star Guitar's build.

Also, was trying to envision where this track would be used in the set list, and what would it replace.

I have thought it would be nice in that segment of star guitar/got to keep on, whether between the songs or after keep on it would be a nice continuation of the joyous vibes both songs bring to the setlist at that point, but i'm unsure with the introduction of this track where something like no geography would go (unless they played the acapella during the song)

Huh??

It's actually more dancefloor-friendly than I imagined a HAAi remix would be. I expected something more ethereal from her. It feels to me like it's strictly for the dancefloor. It might work well in a DJ mix, but it doesn't feel conducive to "home listening".

When we first found out that the new track was somehow incorporating a Soul Brothers Six track, I had the idea that it would be a funky kinda Chems track with real (sampled) bass guitar and drums etc.
I think it might be nice if a remixer tried to go in that direction. But perhaps this is the only official remix we're gonna get.

I never questioned the dancefloor friendliness of the track, I just don't get "remix" vibes from it as it exclusively focuses on using the vocal samples and no other aspects/ elements of the original. It's just a track that happens to have the same vocals in it here and there.

My "Huh??" and my other comments are separate. Maybe I should have done some sort of line between them, but I don't know how to do that. Unless I do this:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lots of remixes use the vocal samples and nothing else from the original track though, don't they?
Not Chemcial, but off the top of my head, a couple of Armand Van Helden remixes spring to mind:

EDIT: Oh there's an offcial visualizer video now for the HAAi remix.

PS: Is that Tom's voice at the end? I can't tell what he says.

Yeah I know, but I somehow like remixes better that sort of pay tribute to its original, or let's say when you can recognize where they actually came from, you know, playing with the original's elements and themes.
This one's a little like the Popof remix of Horsepower - one can barely notice what it's actually remixing. They actually feel more like original/ standalone tracks themselves rather than remixes. I mean, we wouldn't call TDTYF a remix of the Bugaloos or Soul Brothers Six songs, right?

I managed to embed the tweet at the bottom of page 19 of the Chemcials To The World thread.
There is an ongoing issue where tweets with emojis in them don't seem to embed. I'm not quite sure why it did embed for me.
[EDIT: actually it only embedded where I posted HAAi's reply to her own tweet, which didn't have emojis in it. Hope that makes sense]

I also referred to HAAi's "off their new album" comment in my post. I hope she does mean that there's an actual new album on the horizon...

Lol, now I'm on a mission to find what Twilight Zone episode that's from.

My guess is the one where a neighborhoods power goes out and results in the community gaslighting each other.

You mean The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street? When I was in middle school, one of my English books had this Twilight Zone teleplay in it. I became obsessed with this story and wanted to film my own version of it. This was when I was obsessed with getting into filmmaking.

well damn! That got squared away quick, thanks Neorev! It was a great short, and contains commentary that lives true to today.

Have you seen 'The Burbs'? it's kind-of a movie adaptation of that episode. It ups the comedic edge and lightens the social commentary. One of those fun non-blockbuster Tom Hank films.

haha, awesome! I was too naive as a kid so anything mildly scary was a no go for me. I think I was eased into this as part of TBS's 'Dinner & a Movie' back in the day, but didn't return to it until a few years ago, where I realized how hilarious it is.

Anyways, it gets my recommendation, too.

Kind of a shame they didn't include all the remixes too.

Congrats to the many of you that predicted this as part of a new album. I'm tremendously interested what the Harvest Mix will entail.

I guess the new questions is will this re-appear in the live set?

I hope so!
It didn't had a proper chance to shine when played those few times

I honestly think Caroline Ellis provides one of the best vocal samples ever in Chems history. I'm forever grateful.

Great ear, Tom and Ed.

I think she sings flat. Honestly. Yep that's my hot take!
But I understand it's still an original choice of song sample source.

In terms of directly sampled, sung vocals (i.e. no collabs, no spoken word samples) I would like to offer several examples that appeal to me more:

Dead Can Dance (Lisa Gerard) on Song To The Siren & Her Jazz
Barbara & Ernie on A Modern Midnight Conversation
Swallow on One Too Many Mornings (Its a big sample -or two- but a smaller vocal one, I guess)

In terms of directly sampled, sung vocals, there haven't been as many as I might have imagined over the course of Chemical history, athough there are of course a number of them on the new album (French Coffey on Magic Wand, Second Layer on No Reason, a brief snippet of Barry Brown on The Weight, and Soul Brothers Six are also on TDTYF)

Some other noteworthy directly sampled singing on Chems tracks:

Catch Me I'm Falling sampled a huge chunk of Bears On My Trail by Snowbird (yes that's Stephanie Dosen's voice but it's not a collab cos it's a direct sample).
Hold Tight London sampled a huge chunk of Afro Blue by Ace Of Cups (no copyright, it seems).
Eve of Destruction sampled Class Action's Weekend. Admittedly a much smaller sample.
Music Response: Missy Elliot (small sample)

Getting back to TDTYF, I'd be curious to hear what Caroline's voice would have sounded like on this track if it had been "fixed" to sound less flat. I can't help thinking that Tom may have considered it. But perhaps he opted for the imperfection of the unadulterated sample.

Ps if we want to consider "intepolation" vocal samples, that could open up a whole new box:
GTKO is a fantastic cover version or interpolation. Goodbye is too IMHO.  SIFSD ain't bad either. Just off the top of my head.

I think it will come back - strange it went to begin with honestly after the visuals were used 3 times. Not the best return on investment that!

Come on man, it's taken from a children's album! If you're focused on the vocal performance over the perfectly sincere innocence of Caroline Ellis' voice, I pity your childhood and the lack of comforting nostalgia.

Of course I'm focused on the vocal performance! I don't listen to the Chems to get nostalgic for a kids TV show I never watched!
Tha Banana Splits on the other hand, I won't hear a word against.

Singing flat/sharp > singing perfect. Modern music is making our ears too accustomed to the latter. I'm a fan of microtonal stuff and slightly out of tune music. Those subtle sidebands cause by things being out of tune gives songs more girth.

Anyway, I'm really glad they did another version of this song. I always felt the original had something about it that wasn't sitting right. It reminds me of Midnight Madness in the same way where the drums were more energetic than the rest of the track (hot take: MM should've had portions of heavier real drums like Saturate). The new version has hi-hats at half the speed, the kick and snare work nicely (snare is much softer in frequencies) and the rim-shot sample is lower. It works better for the vibe. The other thing I think was a direct improvement over the single is the Soul Six Brothers ("I'll be loving you...") sounds less processed and much more natural. It's used less and between being more organic and more strategically placed, I really like the use of it in this version. I do miss the brass being a main part.

Overall, I think I can say I prefer the Harvest/campfire version more even after the new/excitement novelty wears off.

Is this going be be a divider, or does everyone think the album version is better? Let's hear some more controversial hot takes!

Just read the Variety interview (https://variety.com/2023/music/features/chemical-brothers-tom-rowlands-ed-simons-for-that-beautiful-feeling-1235711215/) and Tom nicely articulates the differences of the two:

Quote
And it did feel like it had a connection with that time [during the pandemic]. But when we were putting the album together, we'd done a new version of it, and we felt that the different approach to it gave it a new life that felt like it fitted in with this record. So as we were putting everything together, it was like, "Oh, the feeling I want at this point in the record, we have a song that does that."

The first version feels like a song of optimism, but still dark (i.e. heavy piano chords and saxophones), which would be accurate for the time and the newer version feels like those feelings have grown/materialized (maybe that's the Harvest reference?).

Just got done hearing this for the bazillionth time today ☺️ The Harvest Mix is perfect in the context of this album. I am not sure which version I think is best - right in this moment for me, context is everything and I love that this ray of light made it to the album. I'm digging the conversation and different takes and perspectives here!

Barbara & Ernie on A Modern Midnight Conversation
This is my personal favourite. Hoops is a (very) close second.

Anybody else wish they hadn't given a name to this version on the album?
I love it, and it works great in the flow of the album. But the visual of '(HARVEST MIX)' on the tracklisting doesn't do it for me, personally.
I loved back in the day when a new version of a track would just end up on an album, with the same title (or sometimes a completely different title - looking at you Fluke) and it would simply be referred to by fans as the [Insert Album] version of the song.

Harvest Mix does make sense, and I do like the title in isolation. If it were released alongside the single, kind of like 'By The Light Of The Moon', I'd have no feedback. I just would have LOVED to have expected the original TDTYF after seeing the tracklist a few months back, and then BAM a completely new FTBF version!

Whirly nailed it. I very much enjoyed the original, and for me personally, it hit hard at the time of release. It was a gift from Tom and Ed, and I really, really needed it. I'm also fond of the HAAi remix and felt the track lived its cycle. I recently wondered if we needed to revisit it again now a few years later, especially since other tracks released in-between albums sometimes don't get the album treatment. However, the Harvest Mix is perfect within the flow of the album, and is both familiar and new at the same time. I'm glad it was included and updated.
