Title: the We Love Underworld thread
Post by: WhiteNoise on Sep 11, 2015, 15:35
A topic dedicated to the second greatest electronic act in the world. Or should I say... second toughest?

Remastered super deluxe edition of Second Toughest In The Infants coming out on November 20th! No official announcement but it looks as though it was accidentally added to the iTunes and Underworld Live stores early, so the info is out. 1 album + 3 bonus discs of b-sides and unreleased tracks, plus one disc detailing the writing process of Born Slippy from early demos to final track, including a lot of early live jams from 94. More info here:

http://www.borndirty.org/2015/09/second-toughest-in-the-infants-2015-deluxesuper-deluxe/

No word on a Second Toughest tour, which I am currently salivating just thinking about!!!

In other Underworld news, Karl Hyde did a show for 6music playing music he listens to in his trailer after a show, it's really good and almost 100% non-electronic too. And word is that Underworld is currently working on a new Lemonworld broadcast - radio shows where they (usually along with Darren Price) play live jams of classics, demos of new songs, live jams of demos of new songs, tracks they love, and themselves, answering chatroom questions and babbling on about nonsense. They're amazing. They did a ton during the Riverrun series and build up to Oblivion With Bells, and they're all wonderful to listen to. And with them working on a new album, expect to hear some early versions of new tunes in the mix.

That's an exciting release, worthy of a spot on the old CD shelf.

I know the Chemical Brothers don't look backwards...but I really wish the early Dust Brothers EPs and remixes were remastered along with the first few official albums and singles.

:o

!

EDIT: OK. I'm calm now.

This is amazing news. I honestly wasn't expecting it so soon (or at all because I didn't want to get my hopes up).
Juanita and Pearl's Girl are two of my favourite songs of all time. The Pearl's Girl EP has some of their best B Sides on. And Second Toughest is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Rick and Karl (and Darren(s)) can have all my money, whenever they want it.

I am SO THERE for the performance too. WN, you must come to the UK to see them at the Royal Festival Hall if they play there again. It was magical.

The Lemonworld broadcasts would be great. The demos they put out during the Riverrun run up were excellent. Particularly Rick's ambient pieces with weird vocal samples and automated voices. Top top top tunes.

When/if it happens, my ass is there. This is a hardcore, bucket list, regret-it-for-the-rest-of-my-life-if-I-don't-see-it kind of thing. Even if I end up completely broke. Second Toughest is literally #1 on my desert island discs list.

If my like for The Chemical Brothers can be represented as the number 100, my like for Underworld can be represented as 99.9999999999 repeating eternally. Essentially the exact same number, but there is an instinctual if not technically correct difference between the two declaring Chems as better. If I really had to think about it, I might be a slightly bigger Chems fan simply because you fellow fans are awesome, while Underworld fans tend to be a little bit of a closed off and introverted heady bunch.

I wasn't expecting it this early either, considering Second Toughest is technically a 1996 release. Maybe that's just because they plan to tour in 2016... I need to get a job.

And damn Enjoyed. I was looking forward to sharing some weird Underworld demos / b-sides / couch tracks with you but you might know as much as I do! Those Lemonworld broadcasts are kind of an Underworld fan secret handshake. Are you on RTSR?

This is EXACTLY how I feel. Depending on my mood I will tell people that my favourite band is either Chems or Underworld. Having only ever seen UW live once though, I feel more of a connection to the Chems (although Karl did come to see me at a show I played a couple of years back... Literally a jaw dropping moment - not unlike your amazing North Coast evening!).

I am not a member of RTSR. I've never known anyone to ask to be invited. I would love to hear anything you think I've not heard though. There is sure to be a fair amount.

Also, you can totally crash at mine if and when the time comes. Though if it's at the end of this year I will still be in the states, which poses a bit of a funding problem...

I really, really love Second Toughest. It's also my jump on point to my love with Underworld. The love ended however with Barking on which I refused to go to the live show.

But this deluxe version of Second Toughest sounds really awesome. And I really hope they will do a tour with that. Pearls girl and Rowla are still my favourite Underworld tracks.

This would make me want to bust out every bit of my Underworld if I wasn't already on an obsessive REM kick.  On a related note, I would like to thank Trump and Cruz for reminding me the reason I have always adored this band.

Back on topic, "Second Toughest In The Infants" is the high point of Underworld's career.  Infants > Bass > Years > Fish > Barking (never heard bells or the first two).

Oh... My... Lovely... Dear... Holy... God...  :o. This was one of those albums that struck me when I was a kid, sublime beautiful sounds coming out of the speakers sunday morning listening to this, it is gorgeous. Oh man, great news.

When "Dubnobasswithmyheadman" remastered was announced never thought they could come up with moves like this, looks like Karl and Hyde are giving out treasures for people to familiarize and learn some history of one of the best electronic acts ever.

And there's something very peculiar, its that, Underworld seems to be remastering their work chronologically, think about it, first  "Dubnobasswithmyheadman" and know their second  great piece of electronica/techno work. If they are keeping it up this way, maybe we could get "Beaucoup Fish" and "A Hundred Days Off " getting some love treatment aswell, and man... that would be something.

That'd be a great great thing! Imagine having the 14th Century and Mercury Mouth EP remastered, let alone EPD etc.

As for Underworld, I just realized I never really followed them. That ought to be changed as the live footage sounds really sublime.

Sixty five English pounds have been handed over to the boys for the beautiful looking 4cd set.

i love you

Underworld is my 3rd favorite electronic act. For me, it goes Chem Bros > Orbital > Underworld.

What impresses me most about Underworld is their transformation from 80s Band to 90s electronic act. The fact that their last 3 albums have not been awful, with songs such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg-QLY3E2fg (one of my favorite Underworld songs of all time) has kept my respect high.

Beaucoup Fish is in my top 10 albums of all time. Sorry, Kanye. My favorite song is Kittens, which is perfect, since I love cats to the nth degree.

Really exciting news to see.

Listened to the preview, and didn't like the first track. Liked the second track. And was ambivalent about the third. Not bad.

I'm interested to hear the songs as a whole, but skeptical so far.

Exciting moments of music we are living, Underworld is back again.  From what I heard, Underworld is taking a softer direction this time, more relaxing music, but I could be wrong.

Can't wait for the complete tracklist and hear how everything will blend together.

I am PUMPED for the new album. But I'm gonna wait like a good boy for the whole thing. No previews. No singles. Just patience.

I didn't go for a Roundhouse ticket because I'm not sure if I'm going to be in the country but I'm regretting that decision more and more.

I'm feeling pretty confident about the chances of them playing Glastonbury this year...

Worth a listen for the added lyrics and second half. The first half is quite similar to the original, which is obviously great, but I was hoping for a little more.
Still gold.

The Born Slippy evolution CD is particularly special too.

So they're playing at Coachella in April...

Reckon they'll do any other US dates? I'm back in the country from February to May, which means I'm missing their Roundhouse show. So I'm pretty desperate to see them.

I guess there's always the hope they'll play Glastonbury too...

They have to announce more US dates. Then again, last time they were here, they only did 3 shows or something. New York, Cali, Red Rocks. Hopefully they hit Chicago this tour!

They did a change of venue with the Red Rocks show back in 2007. They moved it to The Ogden due to low ticket sales.  I know this because I was about to attend after I witnessed Daft Punk there earlier that summer.

Time for Rave on the Rocks 2.0 - God Mode Edition. Chemical Brothers, Underworld, and Leftfield.

and yes please, a Non festival Chicago date!

I am sure about this track. Sure that I love it. Great balance of unexpected/experimental and cheesy catchy pop.

I've really been getting into synthy distorted electronic kinda rock/punk music recently, and this is like Underworld read my mind. It's punchy and unrefined and just perfect.

Post by: Enjoyed on Jan 19, 2016, 19:39
Hmmm...

Listening for the first time right now. I wasn't sold at the beginning, but then 3:04 happened... Rick really has a way with texture that a lot of electronic musicians just don't take the time to investigate (present company excluded, of course). It's clean. But gritty. And distorted. And warm. But cold. And spikey. But soft. It's certainly better than some of the low moments of Barking.  The vocals are erring a little on the Sleaford Mods side of spoken lyrics (which I know are derivative of Karl in a way) and there are some Damon Albarn-ey tones to things as well, which I like.

I'm diving in again...
My initial thoughts were... When I see them live this year (because damn if I'm not going to see them somewhere), how is this going to sit next to Pearl's Girl and Kittens? But actually, it's a little reminiscent of JAL to Tokyo with its obnoxiousness, even if it is a little slow, which worked so well as a set opener back in 2005.
I'm excited for the rest. I was apprehensive when I saw how many tracks there were. But this is very exciting. I will be playing this a lot this week, I can tell.

Good times.

EDIT: I am in love.

On the one hand, it's admirable to see that he is *clearly* just... going for it. Like, letting his gates open and just letting whatever his psyche comes up with out into the world.

On the other hand, what comes out ends up looking like something that your little brother ended up making while you were out with your parents at the grocery store.

Do I wanna watch this? I'm still very much about having a full experience when it comes to new albums. I'll listen to a new single but I like to wait for the whole album to really get into it.

Plus, the show in Pomona will be the first proper show of theirs I'll have seen (Dubnobass... at the Roundhouse was a completely different event) so I'm tempted to keep the excitement growing without getting too pumped too early.

Will anyone be able to record it from iPlayer?

Oh, and you guys know about Hola! for watching things outside your region, right?

I haven't listened yet. It's blocked here in the states, which I took as a sure fire sign that I should wait to hear it on the album in a few weeks.

I tried to take a listen using Hola through Chrome. No go. Sad.

I really enjoyed listening to this.

I don't like I Exhale. I seem to like the other tracks, a couple of them I like a *lot*.

So did anyone listen to/watch the 6 Music Bristol gig? "We are bricking it...and this is our new stuff" said Karl. A comment on the lack of rehearsal from UW's point of view, but I was 'bricking it' too with regards to being able to like this new stuff.  I'm relieved that I do like at least some of it. And one track in particular is so damn good it seems to elevate the status of the whole album.

(BTW Do people say "Bricking it" aka "shitting a brick" outside the UK & Ire? I honestly don't know. But I've always thought that "shitting a gallon of soup" would be a better representation of feeling truly trepidatious. Your shit would be runny, not hard!)

Anyway, some "Barbara Barbara" thoughts (spoilers obvs) :

I Exhale: Not bad, not amazing. Nice big drums and synths.  It gets a bit repetitive towards the end. The chanted vocals have an almost punk vibe, however the "blah blah blah blah blah" bit starts to sound like Karl is bored, or the actual song is bored with itself.

If Rah:  The one with the "Yeahs".  There's an awful lot of talking over the chugging electro groove.  More tuneless chanting on this one.  When Karl echoes "Have a good time" and later "...fly" it reminds me of UW's cover of Baby Wants To Ride, (as does I Exhale for that matter). As the layers build and the "luna luna" vocal arrives, the track improves.  Nice piano-y sounds, and (slightly naff) big chords after the breakdown.  A solid track in the end.

Low Burn:  Ahh THIS is the one, the one that makes it all worthwhile.  Just gorgeous. The strings-y orchestral bits, the French horn (I presume) and that brooding melodic bass-y hum.  A melodic bass hum makes everything sound better – and kinda important.  The smile on Karl's face during the intro at Bristol says he knows it's good. He wasn't bricking it on this one. Perhaps UW should write more songs with "Burn" in the title, 'cause this is as good as Beautiful Burnout.  Eleven out of ten.

Santiago Cuatro:  If I didn't know this was UW...I wouldn't know. Dating back to '08, it sounds like the soundtrack to a love scene from Man On Fire or some other South/Central America based thriller. The Cuatro, I have now learned, is a four stringed guitar-like instrument that looks more like a lute. Well, well! Nice to get some 'live' playing from Karl front and centre. The moody soundscape is perhaps the only hint that this isn't from the World Music section of the record store.

Motorhome – The hypnotic mantra "What don't lift you drags you down, keep away from the dark side", is either addictive or overly repetitive; I can't decide.  Is that a Moroccan instrument that 'whiddles' it's way in, or an electronic version of one? Whatever it is, it reminds me of Further era Chems.  Nice piano, and I think, real bass guitar. I expected a bigger ending but overall, "nice" describes this one. Very nice actually.

Ova Nova: The first thing K&R wrote when they got back together. I didn't like it in the preview clip, but I like it a bit more now.  Could have been on Barking perhaps.  The verses are a bit meh, but the "change your miiiind" bit is catchy.  It's like a breezy poppy euro tune that might go down well in the more commercial clubs of Spain and Ibiza. I can imagine a pop-house cover version that dumps the early verses and becomes a sing along anthem for girls who've drunk too many Bacardi Breezers.

Nylon Strung:  Again the poppy, catchy euro vibe.  High Contrast has stated that he co-produced the album but it's other Barking producers, D Ramirez and Mark Knight who come to mind for this and the track above. The "I wanna hold you" line made me wonder if Oleatta Adams would pop up and sing "Get here if you can".  In fact there are some beautiful female backing vocals on this one (by Rick's daughter allegedly) which add a touch of class to the cheese.

And...that's it? Just seven tracks or 45 minutes of music. Easily UW's shortest album to date...  Unless you get the Japanese import or the £100 vinyl box thingy where bonus track, Twenty Three Blue awaits you. Rumour has it that it's a good 'un. Hope so, it might make the album feel a bit more substantial.  I nonetheless look forward to it's release, in a 7 outta 10 kind of way.

So bonus track Twenty Three Blue can now be heard in 90 sec preview form on itunes Japan.
It sounds like a spoken word type thingy. Slow handclap beat, menacing deep synths, karl talking over the top. A little distorted guitar comes in to punctuate things.  And...then what? Is there a chorus, or a melodic bit? We'll have to wait and see...

I really can't even begin to explain why I love it so much. Just know that the sound of Underworld destroying Underworld while still being Underworld is clicking perfectly with me and the music I've been into recently, and as a collection of music, this album exceeds the sum of its parts moreso than even Dubnobass does. I love it for many completely different reasons than I love Second Toughest.

Also, I was borderline deliriously tired on a Greyhound bus coming home from a New Order gig in the very early morning when I first listened to it, that may have made things a bit more perfect. :)

I'm listening again.

It's certainly their most accomplished album. Their most interesting song writing. Some of their most interesting sounds and textures. It definitely makes you wonder what the heck happened with Barking!

There were lots of moments that had me grinning ear to ear. Lots of sounds that took me back to earlier albums. Lots of excitement for how the new tracks might sound next to old classics when played live.

It's new. New Underworld. They have taken their sound and shaped it into something really fascinating that demonstrates a really forward thinking approach to writing music. IMHO at least.

I really, really love it. And I already know I am going to grow to love it more.

ROLL ON APRIL 13TH!!!

The album is so good I'm deeply considering skipping a week of classes to get to Cali. It would be an insane move. Then again, this is an insane album. Freakishly planning here, got lots of notepads and spreadsheets up.

Am I to understand Coachella is just an impossibility to get tickets to at this point? Something like a Friday-only pass? I don't know how Coachella works. But plane tickets could work out cheaper if I stay the week.

I am going nuts here.

Take a shot every time the word "yeah" is used

die after the 2nd song

I enjoy this album. Old school feel + lo fi. A bit poppy for Underworld at times. Felt like they made it to sound as if it were performed, not produced.
2nd half, like many albums, just sort of is there and not as engaging.

Ouch. But also, how can you not have a favorite? They're all good in different ways, thee must be something.

I think people are comparing to Dubno because of the attitude - entering unproven ground. Personally I think this is what Barking would have sounded like if they hadn't had issues working together and hadn't brought producers in. A lot of the early Barking demos / unfinished stuff / live versions sound like tracks from this, specifically Low Burn through Nylon Strung.

I probably started listening with a different mindset. I heard people comparing I exhale with Born Slippy. When I heard I exhale and the restof the album I was dissapointed, expecting something else.
What Barbara, Barbare did do is make my like Oblivion with Bells en 100 days of more. I absolutly dislike Barking. I cancelled going to their live because of that album .
Tomorrow the live show in a small venue, high expectations for that. Maybe I get to appreciate the new album.

It's £50.

This was uninspired. The video for I Exhale was terrible, but at least there was inspiration in it.

Review of Underworld NYC:

This was the gig I've wanted to see since I originally got into electronic music when I was a teenager in 1999. NYC, Underworld, live indoor setting. I've seen Karl, Rick, and Darren twice before (Fuji '08 & Brixton '10). I had heard the Coachella rip the day before but knew to expect more as they only had a one-hour set there.

I came up on the train from DC earlier in the day and was already well buzzed from having dinner with a mate on the upper west side. Terminal 5 reminded me of a modern, less red, version of KOKO. Was in contact with Gian (Spiritual Vibes/FB group) before getting there. Soon after finding the loo, grabbing drinks, and headed to floor, I randomly ran into Gian. Had a great chat with him and his mate about shows, comparisons of albums, different travels, and how he started this journey. We each had our hopes (Rez/Cowboy, Always Loved a Film = me, Two Months Off = him).

Here's a set list:
I Exhale, If Rah, Juanita: Kiteless: To Dream of Love, Ova Nova, Nylon Strung, Two Months Off, Eight Ball, Jumbo, Ring Road, Push Upstairs, King of Snake, Faxed Invitation, Dirty Club, Low Burn, Rowla, Rez/Cowgirl, Born Slippy .NUXX

Surprises/Thoughts included:
Dirty Club (see dirty epic live before, not club).
Juanita/Kiteless (never seen live, was exactly how I imagined Everything Everything experience)
Faxed Invitation, Eight Ball, Ring Road (alot from Oblivion I didn't expect).
Rowla and Rez with Rick only (I've never noticed this before).

Overall, I danced, I screamed, I enjoyed, I relieved much of the stress that's been on my shoulders for a while (see grad school). It was interesting to see Gian be just as excited as I was during the highs. I've been to many gigs with friends or girlfriends who have a great time, but who aren't on the same understanding of all the nuances that go with a band like Underworld and my obsession with the music. Much respect to Gian for be able to critique each others comments and still be excited. The crowd were around was mad into it. This made me happy as my Electric Zoo experience with the crowd was a let down in ways. People around were in a jovial mood. They wanted to dance, not be seen. They sang along. They created a vibe that Karl even applauded at one point (Though I've read a review that considered the crowd to be really douchey, though only during the slower tracks). After the show, our group hit a popular halal cart down off Time Square after before going separate ways.

Juanita/Kiteless (never seen live, was exactly how I imagined Everything Everything experience)

Yes. I felt the exact same. And it seemed to last forever. So beautiful.

Rowla and Rez with Rick only (I've never noticed this before).

Rowla was the biggest and most welcome surprise. I lost it during that. I don't remember what I was doing but it felt right.
They've been letting Rick take the lead since they started playing Rez with the Dubnobass tour. I think it's nice that Karl steps back and lets the audience focus on him. He is a god after all.

Underworld were just on the short half-hour version of Later with Jools Holland on BBC2. The full hour long version will be on Friday night. I imagine they will play 3 to 4 songs on that.
I only caught the last song which was a short version of Born Slippy. Karl looked like a demented boxer: evil grin, sparring for a fight, bouncing up and down.
I don't know what else they did tonight (Edit: just If Rah). Must remember to check on Friday night or catch up on the BBC iplayer.

Cool.

That's because they're both taking a buzzy "formant" synth line, sending it through a very resonant filter, and tweaking the cutoff frequency here and there.

They were mixing between songs in Pomona in April, at least I'm pretty sure they were. I certainly remember going into Juanita without a break.
I think with the festival shows it's probably a lot to do with the varying tempos. I Exhale and If Rah can't be blended seamlessly into many things, especially if they're trying to cover the 'hits'.
The trouble is, unlike The Chems who beautifully mix a load of their songs together to cover more in an hour and a half, Underworld still play it all individually. Hence why there are now much shorter versions of things like Push Upstairs and KoS.

That said. I hope they read your comment and consider an older school set in March.
Oh, and it really would be especially wonderful to hear Pearls' Girl...

See you in March SV!

Indeed. I miss the days of CD singles (although New Order did them for all 4 singles from Music Complete). We don't even know yet if either of these tracks is any good, and they're strictly vinyl only. Well...except that edited versions of both are on the OST CD.
The Underworld shop offer of the 12" + OST CD for £20 + postage makes it slightly better value I guess. But I haven't forked out yet.
Title: Re: the We Love Underworld thread
Post by: Wolkenkrabber on Jan 26, 2017, 15:32
^ That 12" is now sold out. It seems they only pressed 500 copies and they're all sold.

As for the tracks themselves:
Slow Slippy. You know the way the Breaks scene took a lot of influence from D&B, slowing down D&B beats to get the big fat nu-skool-breaks sound? They've kinda done that to the original Born Slippy Nuxx. The vocals are dubby and echoey whilst the track pounds along at the wrong speed like a big heavy trip hop tune. Kinda woozy, and may work well in the film. I think the 3.50 version on the CD might be long enough though. Im not sure a longer version on vinyl will necessarily be better. It'll probably work well in the film if something woozy/fucked-up is happening.

Eventually But.
Spoiler
A seemingly sad goodbye note from Spud to Gail
with minimal synths from Rick Smith underneath. Only 2.24 on the OST CD, and again I'm not sure I'd want a longer version unless Rick has found something interesting to do with his synths.

Title: Re: the We Love Underworld thread
Post by: Enjoyed on Jan 30, 2017, 19:33
Slow Slippy is disappointing.

It sounds like one of those "SUPA SLO REMIX BY ^L00KUP^MIX" amateur jobies you find on youtube or something. They have the original files still, right? So why just time stretch the drums to be slower? They could have at least integrated some new half time drum samples in there to make it sound less like a basic tme stretch.
And then the super obvious little-clip-of-the-original-vocals-sent-trough-a-delay remix trope...
Shame.
Like you say Scraper, in the film it might work well but it just made me want to go back to that SWEEEEEET Nuxx disk from the STITI deluxe release. Which I am doing now.

It does work quite well in the film actually. There are some bits & pieces of Rick Smith score in there too. But just smatterings if I remember correctly. Maybe I'm getting old, but at times I didn't want another "pop song" to come crashing in on the drama. I think I would have preferred more score from Rick and less songs dominating the film. It felt a bit like watching MTV (when they played music videos) at times. I'm sure I didn't complain like that when the first Trainspotting came out. The ending also left me feeling a little ambiguous about the film, but with refelection I guess it made sense. Anyway there are lots of good bits in it, so yeah it's worth a look.

oh PS, it's worth re-watching the first film before you see this one. Remind yourself about Tommy in particular.

On 17th March, Underworld celebrate the meeting of the groups past, present and future at their biggest ever UK headline show - a sold-out event at London's Alexandra Palace.

Underworld Surreal Carnival Experiment

It's Underworld all night: Rick Smith kicks things off at 7pm with a performance-come-installation in the middle of the main room. Tracks from a deep-dive into the Underworld catalogue will be deconstructed and re-conceived alongside new and improvised work written specifically for the show by Rick. This support to the main event will be networked throughout the building in a collaboration directed by tomato's Simon Taylor, that will offer hints at things to come from Underworld.

Surreal Carnival Experiment / Rick Smith Live from 7pm.

Doors, good food, craft beer and cocktails from 6.30pm.

...are there still tickets? can I afford a flight?

EDIT: it would set me back about $1000 including food and lodging, and I'd have to expedite a passport renewal. So... no...  :( London and Underworld, I'll see you someday.

I seriously lament that an Underworld show for me is far off. Way too far off.

Damnit.

OK. So a few days have passed since the 'Surreal Carnival Experiment' and I thought I'd give a brief (by no means Whitenoise quality) review of the event.

First off, Alexandra Palace is pretty exceptional. I'd never been before and I didn't know there were views of London city like that anywhere. It's one of the many things I've fallen in love with in America - being able to see cities rise up out of the horizon and find spots to take in the whole cityscape (Griffith Observatory in L.A., Gasworks Park in Seattle, Shedd Aquarium in Chicago). So the venue was perfect. Inside they have a festival type set up with food carts and craft ale (managed to find Rogue's Pale Ale from Portland!) and the space is huge and very inviting for sound.

So the 'Surreal Carnival' I guess kind of kicked off when we walked in - video screens displayed around the venue with various looped clips of members of the production team (as well as Rick and UW's manager and former JBO boss, Steve Hall). There was a screen in the centre of the food area which had a button attached - allowing folks to record a 3 second loop of themselves in the camera which was then displayed up on the big screen. Pretty cool - though not really 'surreal' or 'carnival' related (more on this later).

From 7 Rick began DJing from a large centre console in the middle of main space in Ally Pally, surrounded on all 4 sides of the console by huge hung sheets projected on with lovely, albeit rather generic, visuals. These varied from nice multicoloured textural plates to more basic bouncing white balls and occasionally some footage of a dancers and live video of Rick that was being blurred and altered on the fly. This was especially enjoyable to watch as the effects were such that he would kind of materialise out of nothing as the camera feed was wiped and strecthed - and whenever you saw him he seemed to be having a wonderful time playing what was essentially an hour and a half of new music.

Now, I have to say, the music in this warm up was my favourite part of the night. Despite the weird air in the room of people clearly hanging around for something else - not paying a huge amount of attention from where I was near the stage - the set was really wonderful. It included new and very much altered versions of tracks like Play Pig, Low Burn and Lenny Penne.
It was the connection here to the Riverrun series that had me in full appreciation mode. The set was, for want of a better description, like Riverrun Part 2. It switched up from ambient tracks to techno rollers, to soft house rhythms and back around again to more ambient journeys often with Karl's dulcet tones roaming around on top. In terms of it being a 'taste of what's to come', I would not be at all surprised if they were planning another meandering set of tracks like those of Lovely Broken Thing, Pizza For Eggs and I'm A Big Sister - which excites me a great deal.

Now. Where does the 'Surreal Carnival' fit into this? I hear you asking. Well... It doesn't really. And that was the first really disappointing thing about the night. There were 3 carnival type folks dressed up on stilts (as seen in this video clip (https://is.gd/icKG9Q) - dancing to Born Slippy which they were not around for when it was played later in the evening) that made their way through the crowd during Rick's set. And that was it. No sideshows had been set up. No decorations. Nothing at all surreal. It really felt like the name was tacked on at the last minute (along with the stilt goblins) to try and make a Rick DJ set seem more interesting (which it really didn't need to be).
I was also hoping for more input from Tomato - the art side of the Underworld coin - maybe in the form of reimagined covers like those of the recent anniversary editions, or maybe some revisited video work from their finer days touring STITI and Beaucoup Fish. But no. Visual wise it was just the 4 sheets for Rick's set and then the current 'here's the title of the song we've just started playing' during the proper set. So all in all, a rather underwhelming experience for the eyes.

So as Rick is wrapping up, he drops an instrumental (dub?) version of Down Pipe - Underworld's collaboration with Mark Knight & David Ramirez. The crowd finally seem to be getting a bit more excited for whats to come though this is to be followed by the obligatory 30 minute wait for the band to appear on stage which was met with several pathetic heckles from folks around me ("We're ready now!", "This is about us, not you!", "HURRY UP!") - it's like these guys had never been to a show before...

And this is where it starts getting super disappointing.

The crowd. I'm in a bit of a minority at my age. I see some other 20 somethings (which I'm still technically allowed to refer to myself as), some young couples - folks who, like me, must have gotten into Underworld from outside the clubs as they likely wouldn't have been old enough to attend their shows when they first started listening. But the majority of the crowd is, I would say, over 40 and moving up to over 50. Great! I'm thinking to myself. The old school ravers, coming to show their support for a band they've grown up dancing to. But. As it would turn out. These older folks are actually just there to watch. To stand still and watch. To criticise people for taking photos and videos (yes it's annoying but it's also 2017), get moody when they have to wait 30 minutes between sets and ultimately suck the energy out of the room. There were honestly times during the first 30 minutes of the show that I was the only person on my feet dancing. They recognised the songs but were content to just stand there as if it was some avant garde jazz performance that needed intellectual scrutiny. It was weird. You could even say it was surreal...

So I'm trying to have fun during the set - which I'll go into in a sec, but is essentially their current best of show - but I'm made to feel like my dancing is inappropriate for the occasion. I'm trying to bring Glastonbury levels of energy and I'm met with open mic night complacency. It was distracting and ultimately gave me too much space to focus on what wasn't quite right about each track they played. These are songs that I have grown up dancing around my room to. In their live form too (which could have ended up being somewhat detrimental to my enjoyment). I know every sound that's coming and and connecting with them all - except that this is now my third time seeing them play these versions and I'm actually a little bored.

A few folks have mentioned it before in this thread but the whole Greatest Hits shebang is not working for me. Almost every song is cut down to what may as well be a radio edit. There's no segueing between tracks and barely any exploration within them. They start, they play the hooks, sing the lyrics and stop. Even new additions to the set (for me) like Cups (Geoff will have to remind me if they played this in Pomona - I kind of feel like they may have?) and Moaner are pale reflections of their former self. Everything sounds thinner - like they've chosen not to include certain layers - and too much focus is payed to the BIG SOUNDS. The chords in Two Months Off is a great example. They're wonderful. Magical in fact and every time I hear them I feel warmer. But that song is not just about the chords. It's about the 38 seconds of drums at the end. Or the 2 minute breakdown in the middle. Or the glistening descending arpeggio, that in this show was blurred into a bland wave of treble.

I don't know. I'm being harsh for sure and it's almost certainly from being spoiled by fantastic live show recordings from years before. And they're getting on. They don't have the energy to do a 24 minute medley of Juanita, Cups and Push Upstairs. But I really feel like I could have had more fun listening to their Live In Tokyo set loud at home, than being embarrassed for landing on people's toes when I'm jumping up and down to Kittens.

So yeah. Riverrun Part 2 was great. Some really fantastic versions of tracks with that wonderful Rick Smith vibe throughout the first hour and a half. And a solid set to follow with some pleasant additions that were a lot of fun to see live for the first time (I forgot to mention the lasers, but during Moaner they were pretty fantastic). But ultimately I was left wanting more. A lot more. A feeling that I can't say I've ever left a Chems show with. I really do wish they would try taking a leaf out of their book and try giving their audience something a little more special to experience when they come out to see them. For now at least, I wont be headed out to any more Underworld shows until I hear word of them trying new things.

.. Or playing Pearl's Girl. I have STILL never heard it live.

Apologies for the lengthy ramble. I felt like I had to vent a little.
I'm going to put on Live in Toyko now and dance around my room again.

Dude. Thanks for posting a rather extensive review about your experience.

I'm glad that you found some worth in the evening--sounds like Riverrun part 2 was great.

Despite the crowd, I'm totally envious.

But about the crowd--the worst Chemical Brothers show I've ever been to was seeing them in Oakland back in 2005. They played the Harvey Kaiser arena, and were essentially "opening" for New Order.

Nobody. Fucking. Danced.

It was the most awkward shit in the world--I felt exactly like you did. I was trying to get people enthusiastic about the set and see if I could get their energy levels up... but no one was into it. One guy literally just stood there with his arms crossed and ended up bumping into me, seemingly intentionally, when he decided he needed another beer. I spazzed out trying to have a good time regardless, but did not succeed.

The best part about that show was hearing Believe live for the first time. I was like... DAMN. And then I saw them again the next night at Coachella and everything was right with the world.

The entire experience after that next-night Coachella show was encapsulated by some dude, who clearly did *not* listen to electronic music, exclaiming as we left the polo grounds, "Yo that Chemical Brothers set was off the HINGES."

I don't know why people don't allow themselves to have a good time sometimes. I don't know why people have to be lame in a crowd and choose to sit there and go against the flow. But that's the ecstasy and the tragedy--sometimes you feel transported with everyone around you.

And sometimes you feel like the loneliest motherfucker in a crowd.

Anyway, again, wish I could have gone with you. We could have had ourselves a stupid good time.

Here's to the next time.

Underworld have done a "mixtape" for Annie Nightingale's BBC Radio 1 show HERE (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04x226k).
The final track is a mix of Born Slippy that I don't recognise. The tracklisting on the BBC website says it's from a John Peel session, but it's certainly not the version I witnessed them do at Maida Vale back in 2003. *EDIT* Because it's mis-labelled by the BBC (tsk!) and is in fact version A1796 from Disc 4 of the Second Toughest remasters. The fact that I bought the 2CD version of the STITI remaster would explain why I didn't recognise it.  ::)

"Interesting" fact about Annie Nightingale: I first noticed UW when she played Cowgirl on her Sunday evening show circa 1993. Her son Alex used to manage one of my favourite bands - Primal Scream, and he now manages The Chems.
Tracklist is about half way down THIS (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08j90s2) page.

Pooter, I remember that set. It was cause everyone was there for New Order...outside the two of us. Too bad we didn't know each other at the time. Heck, Hernan Cattaneo played a wicked opening set and no one danced. I remember you could hear Tom doing his yelling thing above the vocals...and you could actually hear him...It was sad. Seeing them at Fuji the year before made the Oakland show such a let down.

Did any US folks ever order the Super Deluxe versions of Dubno... or STITI?

I'm curious to know how long it would take to ship as it's only £1.50 more but it says from 5 to 28 working days delivery. If I got it delivered to the UK I'd have to wait about that long to have it brought over to me, so 5 days would be much more desirable...

I went for it.

We'll see how long it really takes...

I'm very, very excited about disc 2. Those demo versions are always super interesting to listen to. Not sure why Please Help Me is on there though.

I don't think I've heard the Futureshock remix of Bruce Lee either. I've always been a fan of their work so that will be fun.

They seem to be pushing these out before the anniversaries. So maybe it won't be too long to wait for all those Ansum versions of the wonderful 100 Days Off material...

AND

I wonder if they're trying to keep momentum up for another album to drop?!?

The instrumental that Between Stars was sung over was played by Rick earlier this year in one of his solo sets in Tivoli. It had different recorded lyrics by Karl as well, no connections to Between Stars until now.

I love the song. They just never do anything new with it live. 2008 DocksClub and the 2003 Maida Vale performances are the only times I know that they've gone off the beaten path with it, and the latter performance wasn't much good.

Someone on their team accidentally clicked to do so, so the full show was available for a few moments, before they discovered it and deleted it. In that time someone (of course) downloaded the entire - no dropouts (except KOS/Jumbo transition) and no quality problems.

"I am not in love but I'm open to persuasion."

Thanks WN. So it's in 360 quality, mono sound....cos that's all Facebook is good for? All the more reason why UW should stick it on Youtube in high def.

So that was Between Stars but 'remixed' with new synths. Less melodic than the Barking version but nice to hear them doing something different - and playng one of the better songs from that album (should have been a single).

The acid jam following Between Stars was apparently called GWCW. And then we had the quote at the top of my post which is from a Joan Armtatrading song, but I think it was really a reference to 10CC's I'm Not In Love. I hadn't thought about it before but the choral sound on Dark Train sounds like it was either sampled from or inspired by the 10CC track. Perhaps that should be on WhoSampled.

You can really hear people talking during Lenne Penne, but nice to see UW throwing stuff like that in for variety anyway. I guess the problem with doing obscure/quieter tracks is that the audience start yapping - something I remember well from their Dubno gig in 2015.

The sound dropouts during Low Burn - can't figure out if they were in the venue or just on the feed.

Oh your Mixcloud links were also bad links, but this (https://www.mixcloud.com/LivesetsForLife/underworld-live-at-audio-obscura-rijsk-museum-ade-2017-amsterdam-20-oct-2017/) and this (https://www.mixcloud.com/techno_power/underworld-live-at-audio-obscura-rijsk-museum-ade-2017-amsterdam-20-oct-2017/) aren't! THAT'S WHAT I RECOGNIZED IT FROM.

I knew I'd heard some part of that version of Air Towel - turns out it's a bit dancier version of a remix of Good Morning Cockerel that Ricks also been playing in his pre-show sets earlier this year, like Red Earth. Nice to have names for these things.

Also apparently Lenny Penne's performance was the unreleased Darren Price drums mix - still sounds very Bamboo-like to me.

Hopefully they're planning an HD release of this.

They seemed to switch between audio feeds a couple of times during the stream. Audience noise dropped significantly at one point, and during... I wanna say Dark & Long??? [EDIT: listening now and it happens more noticeably in Push Upstairs].. it seemed to swap over to a wetter feed for Karl's vocals - more distortion, EQd, less d/i vocal. [EDIT: quieter music too.]

I'm SUPER pumped to see them putting in new things. Though, as WN said, it does seem to be pretty heavily based around what Rick was DJing at the Surreal Carnival and other sets following. Lenny Penne and Downpipe specifically sounded exactly the same. Still, great to see them dropped into the limelight rather than the warm-up spot (which was always going to have idiots talking over it).
Oh and did I mention PEARL'S GIRL!??!???!!!??!

Still haven't seen it live by the way, Rick & Karl. Just saying. It's been over a year since you were stateside. Just saying. Looking for an excuse to meet up with Chems peeps. Just saying. Haven't been to a live show in a while. Just saying.

What a journey you're about to embark on! Huzzah!

The first time I properly listened to them was the live album 'Everything, Everything' (still my favourite album of all time). That was kind of an accident on my part, I just grabbed the first album I saw with Born Slippy on it (Fatboy opened his Big Beach Boutique with it in 2002) and ended up discovering their album stuff afterwards. It's interesting that you'd head straight to their live show to get a feel. Very cool.

Let us know what you think!

Oh, also, keep your eyes peeled during that set for a guy dressed as a giraffe in the audience.

Karl Hyde of Underworld shares his musical milestones with Matt Everitt in a programme first broadcast in 2016.
Karl Hyde is one half of one of the world's greatest electronic bands. Their lyrics are an essential part of their music, and their anthems can fill a club dancefloor, their albums move the mind as much as the feet. They're also as much of a live spectacle as any rock band.
Karl looks back to the start of his musical history - his early passions growing up in Worcester, his first gigs and influences. He also talks about meeting his future Underworld partner Rick Smith and their search to find a creative identity. He also talks about Underworld's first shows, and how they became the acclaimed outfit they are today - taking in the iconic Born Slippy (which had its roots in Karl's own issues with alcohol abuse), through sound-tracking the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony and their 2016 album Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future.

Tracks played:
I Exhale
Juanita
Dark Train
Two Months Off
King of Snake
Ova Nova
Nylon Strung
Push Upstairs
Kittens
Jumbo
Low Burn
Rez
Cowgirl

New Underworld track "Brilliant Yes That Would Be":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJfQQsH-nOo

I am AT WORK AND CANNOT LISTEN TO IT but it looks like it was uploaded multiple times, with various region locks, and then taken down or made unavailable - maybe by mistake, the Youtube channel is one of those automated services.

Edit: It's on Spotify

Edit edit: But only kind of. I guess it officially releases tomorrow and it's rolling out a bit weirdly on all the platforms.

Heard it on the live stream but had to take care of something, so I'm going to delve back into the set when it's uploaded.

There's also the  worldofunderworld (http://www.underworldlive.com/news/2018/05/world-of-underworld/), which sounds very cool and interesting until you realise it's just 4 Spotify playlists...
They talk about sprinkling out new music though, like that video above, I guess they're less interested in working on an album right now and would rather just release stuff as and when. I'm OK with that, but I would much prefer another full collection.

Hopes firmly pinned back on Tom & Ed!

Iggy Confidential alongside Karl & Rick from Underworld

Iggy Pop returns for a special co-host edition of The Confidential Show alongside Karl & Rick from Underworld.

This comes off the back of news that the three have collaborated on some new music which premiered on Saturday night at the BBC 6 Music leg of The Biggest Weekend.

Iggy's musical legacy has inspired and energised rock and roll's alternative spirit since the late Sixties and his stage antics have marked him as a truly iconic frontman.

Oh man! Why Why Why sounds so delicious. Eugh. I would love to hear that live. It used to be a big favourite of mine when I discovered Futureshock's 'The Question' wasn't entirely original.

They're playing one of these 'loose' shows on my birthday... back in England. What a perfect way to celebrate that could have been.

The Drift series has been amazing! These guys are back on form. Honestly, the last release I loved from them was the Riverrun series, which the Drift series reminds me alot of. Oblivion With Bells was okay, but I wasn't thrilled with Barking or Barbara Barbara We Face A Shining Future. I did love its Japanese bonus track Twenty Three Blue.

I hope you are also following their Mixcloud because they continued posting older, unreleased material every Thursday in between Drift EP1 and EP2.

https://www.mixcloud.com/underworldlive

The Romford 1998 Rehearsals recording is especially awesome!

By accident, Underworld posted Drift EP 2 Part 6 on YouTube a day or so before Part 5 was supposed to go up, but they pulled it down shortly after. I got to watch the video. Get ready... cuz Part 6 is Appleshine Continuum... and it's 47 frigging minutes long! That's right, that is a 4 followed by a 7... a 47 minute track. This release is gonna be quite along once it is released together and I hope they release it in hi-res like they did with Drift EP1.

Also, Drift will apparently comprise of several EPs and they are also planning an album... all to be released in 2019!

May last year, to save my life, I boarded a plane to London for a 10 day vacation in the UK, and on the zeroth night staggered around a darkened London in a half asleep travel-lagged stupor, in awe at the beauty of one of the biggest cities I'd ever been in, seen in countless films and photos, laid out in front of me. Grabbed a pint on the south bank and marveled at the world's bigness, the city lights, and my happy naivety toward the newness around me.

Nearing midnight I ran to Embankment to connect to Bank, and caught the last DLR heading to Greenwich, where in I'd booked a bargain hostel for the night. The train was nearly empty, and I took the coveted front seat with a driver's eye view of the snake through Canary Wharf, Underworld's music literally in my ears.

To say my love for Underworld and their team is immense - to say this new song and video captures the elation and freedom and discovery of that moment for me - is an understatement.

So what are the chances of a standalone date in Chicago?
Title: Re: the We Love Underworld thread
Post by: Bosco on Jan 28, 2020, 00:04
I break it down in two ways:

1. Is there a music festival in the Chicagoland that would go out of their way to book them? No.

2. Is there motivation for Underworld or a promoter to persue a singular date in a Chicago venue? No.

We thought the Chemical Brothers tour dates are hard to come by, well, Underworld is even less likely.

Movement makes sense though. Beyond the obvious of it being a electronic music festival, it seems the people who book artists at Movement are reaching out for a legacy type act to add to their lineup each year.

"More North American dates to be added"

That phrase has been uttered on many occasions when it comes to some of our favorite electronic groups. It's a common trap that builds up hope and shatters dreams for non-costal cities.

SXSW and Ultra Cancelled, and now Coachella is rescheduling, too. Pretty Crazy.

Right!?

Bosco somehow stumbled on a pre-emptive announcement from The Warfield, before any word from Underworld. I was hoping for another date further up the coast, ala La Chembros, but it's not looking likely.

I'm trying to figure out how I could make this work. Flights are... Flights. And if it were a month later I think it'd be easier to justify.
But also, haven't seen them in ages, and would definitely love to. Got to put more brain power into it. And maybe listen through the Drift boxset again to see how that feels.

Just double checked the dates--the Underworld SF show at the Warfield is on April 21st, which is 3 days after the Chems show and my-oh-my it's on a Friday.

So I'm 100% going to this show. Stoked.

Quite a fantastic show last night. Everyone who didn't go to Coachella was ready to dance, and dance they did.

There was no opener--just people standing around drinking for an hour prior to Underworld going on.

My drink before the show came with a view.

20230421_201219.jpg

The set took a very slow start with some new tracks--I'm curious to hear what the recorded versions sound like. It was nice, but I was admittedly impatient.

The highlight of the set was King of Snake. That track *never* gets old, it never stops hitting hard, and it never fails to make me groove.

I was a little sad they didn't play Border Country--that was my favorite off of Drift.

But they did play Juanita, thankfully, and the Rez/Cowgirl double punch always leaves me floored.

The set came in at just under 2 hours--they took their time with these tracks. And although I wanted them to play for another 2 hours, the time we spent on the floor with fellow fans was fabulous.

What!???

At worst, their sound is still solid....

I'm still amazed that Danny Boyle had them compose the music for the 2012 Olympic Summer games. My Brother still talks about that opening ceremony to this day.

I still talk about it to this day - it was a seminal moment in history IMHO. I actually sat my wife down to watch it. I had never felt more national pride in my life when I watched it live.

And I Will Kiss is one of the most stunning pieces of music of all time.
