"The Chemical Brothers have announced their ninth studio album, No Geography. No Geography follows the British duo's GRAMMY®-nominated 2015 album, Born In the Echoes, which was their sixth consecutive UK No. 1 album. No Geography is set for a spring 2019 release and features the exuberant new anthem, "Free Yourself."  Additional album details including tracklist and U.S. pre-order information are forthcoming."

Excellent a new album

Ah, so they have announced more (UK) dates for 2019 as I predicted (I know, that impresses nobody). No London date listed though, other than the All Points East gig. I'll wager that they'll eventually add London (Brixton/Hammersmith) for December 2019 or early 2020.

The pro cameras that some people spotted in the Ally Pally crowd: I'm wondering if they were just to shoot footage for the above advert and/or the All Points East advert they put on social media.

I would have thought No Borders would be a better title than No Geography. Geography is important! No Limits would be good too but someone beat them to it. (https://youtu.be/RkEXGgdqMz8?t=1)

I neeeed them to come to NY, missed my chance in 2015, and the gig they played at that time didn't look so good

I was betting on Eve Of Destruction being the album 9 title, but No Geography sounds cool nonetheless! (Just glad they didn't cop out and call it Free Yourself tbh)

Honestly, Forest would be unbelievably perfect for a Chems show, literally no way to overstate how cool that would be. Fingers majorly crossed.

I went to EF last year - even with a lot of the headliners being more mainstream EDM-y, it's still the most incredible event.

I'm also on the fence for pre-ordering now because of that message, although Born in the Echoes technically only had a UK & Europe release on Virgin. It sounds like this time might be different? I'm talking about vinyl here.

Ok. I re-read my post that you were referring to. It looks like the album pre-order and the details for accessing pre-order tickets are separate from each other. If pre-order info for tickets comes any earlier before the Dec 4 date, i'll update it here, but you guys should also keep your eyes open as well just in case I sleep on it!

I probably won't do the album pre-order, but would like to get the copy at the record store on release date. Kind of a ritual I guess.

Ah I see. I think I already own a couple of mintpack-ed cds then. I thought they were just called gatefold, but I'm assuming this is just an attempt by record companies to re-brand and highlight it as "environmental friendly" product. When really it's just cheaper to make, cheaper to ship, and less breakable during shipping. I highly doubt mintpack is better protection for cds once in consumer hands. Especially, in terms of scratch resistance and longevity.

That being said, it's nice to see less dependency on plastic.

If you're in the US and ordering the 3xLP vinyl, it's about $20 cheaper to order from the UK site (Virgin EMI) than the US site (Astralwerks). $60.44 vs $79.72 including the cheapest shipping option. The UK site has no details on packaging, but I'd assume they will be the same release. The US site says:

  • RIGID SLIPCASE
  • 3 X HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL
  • 3 X SPINED SLEEVES
  • 3 X PRINTED INNERS
  • 12 X 12 INSERT

Just a note to add about how the album may play out:

I decided to listen to the studio recordings of Free Yourself and MAH back to back and I predict they may play back to back on the album as they use the same 4x4 style beat to introduce each track. We know from past albums they like to strip down tracks all the way down to a kick drum to the next track (even in live sets).

Following up with Orangwedge's new discovery this morning... All the titles of songs we know about so far (and assuming they are all on the new album), seem to have a present day message to them. This looks to be shaping up into a concept album.

I've had another idea about Bango:

The Todd Terry Project had a track called Bango
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNesbHxl0qQ

Which sampled a vocal from a track called Go Bang (which incidentally is kinda like two Chems song titles put together!) by Dinosaur L (sample at 3.19 below). Hot Chip did a cover of this track too. I wonder if the Chems Bango also samples Dinosaur L.

[Incidentally this record came out on the same Sleeping Bag label as Weekend by Class Action which is sampled in Eve Of Destruction]

Am I getting carried away? Yeah, probably.  ::)

Wonder how this works. Does Shazaam get advanced notice of tracks, are they already available to them or what?

I'm intrigued by all of these song titles (except for the released ones of course).

As predicted FY (Album version! hopefully it takes the crazier harder route or maybe just a different sequence/edit to go into MAH nicely) ... will be going into MAH (single version?).

I'd imagine We've Got To Try will sound a bit different as it only had the sample and new vocal addition as you guys discovered.

I may like this album from start to finish continuously hopefully.

Tracks get sent to digital streaming services like Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, etc in advance, with a release date. Shazam must probably be part of it too, they have to have the track in order to make it recognizable by their algorithms. The lack of artwork probably means it's still not final, and will come later.

Re: Here Come The Drums, there were people who hoped it would be on the last album, but it wasn't. I'd be surprised if it's on this one (probably a different "timbre", to use a Whitenoise expression).
It's also possible that HCTD is now registered as Papal Disco, following Ben J's investigation of the French SACEM registry of songs and some forum input from Enjoyed and me.
There appeared to be a cluster of Life of Galileo songs on the SACEM page, none of which share titles with No Geography, so it's not a suprprse that Ben J didn't get any joy with those on shazam. But I guess Galileo could have nonetheless offered some inspiration.

That would seem to be a logical explanation. I've tried typing some track names into Shazam's website, but it's not playing ball with me. May be diffeent in other countries though?

Re: Catch Me I'm Falling, am I the only one thinking that sounds like quite a white, girly sort of a lyric/title? Perhaps an Aurora song? Although another thought: anyone remember the final scene in Trespass Against Us?

I was reading an interesting piece here the other day centred around Kate and the Surrender Artwork, and I didn't know until then that the Out of Control Single cover was almost the cover for Surrender.

Love it!!!!!!!

No black and white scheme!!!!!!!

It doesn't seem completely Kate Gibb as this a straight vintage colorization & edit of an even older photo, with no proper silkscreening. Kate Gibb also edits old photos but in a much more cut and surreal manner, this is different. I wonder if they nicked it from some odd protest art, cloud face and all.

It seriously looks class. Fits. Confirms the political themes we're sensing. I wonder if this is something short and cranked out, and another album might be making its way out soon too.

I hope the singles get similar art too, but that doesn't happen that often this day and age.

And since we're getting GTCO today, I think we'll have enough room to squeeze in EOD for release before the albums drops right?

Love the timing of all of this!

The cover! My interpretation: The Bros are heading toward some type of threat maybe but going in strong and not afraid because the weather gives them a beautiful positive outlook.

Wonder if itunes has an extra track for the Japan release?

Yep, Tom was very reluctant to admit it on Lauren's show but this is pretty clear to me. Love the kind of In-the-evening-you-might-praise-the-day theme.

But man, this album is going to be quite short, doesn't even touch the 50 minute mark.

It's gone midnight in Tokyo, I'm on Japanese iTunes now. Searched Chemical Brothers albums and couldn't see the new album. Searched "No Geography" and the songs come up (plus confusingly, a track called No Geography by another artist). I can't see any sign of a bonus track, but I'll admit I very rarely visit iTunes. Feel free to check yourselves.

In fact I can only find 9 tracks on Japanese iTunes; no sign of Eve Of Destruction (?).

*EDIT* Wait, I found it after entering THE Chemical Brothers. Ten tracks, same release date. Nothing new(er) to report, as far as I can see.

"At some point during the recording of No Geography, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons pushed the reset button. It began with the construction of a studio within a studio - a tiny makeshift room that housed the kind of kit they'd previously used to record the bulk of their first two albums; equipment that had sat gathering (freestyle) dust in Tom's attic for the last twenty years. That experimental space offered a freedom and the chance to create music and tell their own story in a way they hadn't done for years.

Wherever possible, things were done differently. Randomness and jagged edges were encouraged and songs were built around vocal samples; voices were wound tightly into music that Tom and Ed found themselves following wherever it led them. Snatches of dialogue from the late '60s experimental Dial-A-Poem project were chosen that reflected the mood in the studio. Songs were road tested in front of audiences as part of the 2018 live set (which took in two shows at Alexandra Palace - the band's biggest UK headline shows to date) and honed in regular DJ sets the world over."

No Geography features the previously released tracks Free Yourself and MAH ("a short & bloody ride into our modern media psychosis" The Guardian) and the new single Got To Keep On. Several of the tracks on No Geography feature vocals by Norwegian singer/songwriter Aurora who wrote and recorded parts in the band's studio in close collaboration with the band. Japanese rapper Nene also features on Eve of Destruction.

Any guesses how they are going to split up the tracks on the 2LP vs the 3LP? Any guesses on why they would split them up differently? They are both 180g gram. 3LP is White 2 LP is black.

The Deluxe will have extra themes to download on the internet but why not put it on the vinyl? That is
that there will be more extra songs? And someone will pass them to me privately the instrumentals of those songs when someone has them?

Yeah, I thought that too.  Why not put the instrumentals on Side F for the deluxe edition?  Seems strange, unless the sound quality is that much better on the 3 LP because they put only 2 tracks on each side.  Maybe the 2 LP set has 3 on each side and one on Side F.IDK?

Given that the record will be less than 50 minutes long, I assume those instrumentals will neatly fit on these three LPs. They're probably going the BITE route again and press some of them on vinyl and some will be availbale only digitially (remember the outrage when they didn't inlcude all the bonus tracks on the deluxe version of BITE?).
So what you get is a pullout poster, 4 intrumentals and a download code for bonus tracks (which certainly will include or maybe even consist of these four instrumentals).
What I do not get, though, is why customers of the deluxe version do not get access to a digital version either.

"At some point during the recording of No Geography, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons pushed the reset button. ......Japanese rapper Nene also features on Eve of Destruction.
I'm guessing the vocodered bits on EOD are from Nene then.

Quote from: wincent on Feb 01, 2019, 08:15

So we've already heard 30% of the new album. Even if that 30% sounds good, I hope there will be a "Japanese" with bonus tracks.
As mentioned earlier, I visisted Japanese iTunes yesterday: it just has ten tracks listed. I can't see the physical version listed on Japanese websites yet (can anyone else?).

I would suggest we have heard more like 45% of the album if you include the Printworks audio of Eve Of Destruction - which is about the same length as the track time on the album. In fact it's slightly longer but I suspect they looped the intro for EOD at Printworks. So that brings us up to 40% of the album, and we've heard a bit of "We've Got To Try" as well, on the Desert Island Disco mix. Hence 45%.

Quote from: VMan on Feb 01, 2019, 06:20

I love the cover art! Yeah, I too am unsure if it is the work of Kate Gibb. What an intriguing time though!
Well we know from other posts that it's not her. I did notice that she liked Ed Simons Insta of the artwork today though. I'm wondering if that's a genuine like or if it's her way of saying "I see what you did"...Well, I suppose its possible she was involved in the choosing of the image.

BTW has anyone pre-ordered the album digitially (you never know when they'll run out of MP3s, right? ;) )? If so , how does the instant DL of the (shorter) album version of FY sound?

Universal says:
    MAH (instrumental)
    Catch Me I'm Falling (Instrumental)
    Eve Of Destruction (Instrumental)
    Free Yourself (Instrumental)

No, you heard me right. I believe they might put either just some of them on the vinyls (like they did with BITE) or maybe all of them and then you'll be able to download them too (like with BITE).

That artwork is a surprise! Totally not what I expected, but a nice throwback to Exit Planet Dust :)

The short runtime is probalby to make room for Exclusive Tracks on the  unannounced Special Version for Japan.  ;D
Not really bothered by it, I love long tracks but Further clocks in at just over 50 minutes and it is the most perfect album Humanity has produced so far.

Well when I click that link it doesn't say Free Yourself instrumental, just the other three. I know there is an instrumental of FY as it's already "out there" on the internet, but I don't see it being offered here. Does it somehow look different in Germany, or do I need glasses?

Interesting. When I visit the universal store via the chems homepage store tab, I also get the three-track deal with a €6 higher retail price, now at €50.99 for the package. And it tells me there will be a "The Universe Sent Me" instrumental. Weird.

Edit: And it contradicts the one part of my assumption that all instrumentals might be on the vinyl by stating that those three tracks will be available via download card.

Not to be a Debby Downer but where is the extra value in the 3LP? The bonus tracks are only instrumentals, so they're not new songs or b-sides, and they're download only? Don't people buy vinyls to actually listen to the songs on vinyl?

If it's only a download code and the same track listing as the 2LP I don't think I'll pay extra just for different colour vinyl and nice packaging.

They're heavyweight vinyl, which is both higher quality sound and will last longer. Limited edition. It's a tradition too - all albums since Dig Your Own Hole (except Further) have had a heavyweight 3xLP version pressed.

Also, a strong chance you get an exclusive unmixed track or two. On the Surrender 3xLP you can hear the ending of Got Glint, instead of it fading into Hey Boy Hey Girl, on We Are The Night you can hear the end of Burst Generator, and even the 3xLP of Born in the Echoes, with no transitions, has a version of I'll See You There with no vocal sample in the intro.

Sometimes you also get these broken transitions on the regular 2xLP (Push the Button 2xLP splits Come Inside and The Big Jump), sometimes not.

180g records are just heavier and therefore feel sturdier. There is no difference in sound quality between a 140g/160g/180g/200g LP.

All of them were promo releases. The first official 3LP release was the "Born in the echoes" 3LP set - with bonus track :)

No one's actually said: A whole new song! Which is (potentially) the really interesting bit (http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/want/t2802.gif) (http://yoursmiles.org/t-want.php) .
So is it Fan Thai or Fan Tie*? Is it going to sound Asian? Will it be the Chems first foray into Goa Trance? (I know, Goa's in India, and the title sounds more Far Eastern but they did play a Goa Trance kinda track at Printworks...) And where did your translation come from Neorev? I just see the titles in Japanese on the CD Japan site.

*Actually the google translate from HMV's listing (https://www.hmv.co.jp/en/artist_Chemical-Brothers_000000000056335/item_No-Geography_9520770) spells it Fan Tai. And it seems Fan Tai Sui is something to do with the Chinese Zodiac?...

EDIT: I also found this little stub on Wikipedia: Fan Tai (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_Tai)
Also HERE'S (https://www.instagram.com/p/BcOT4XbFiJy/?tagged=buggedout) the track from Printworks that I was thinking of. Pure guessing of course!
One more thought: Fan Thai is actually the name of a Thai restaurant...

I hate to keep drilling this home, but this album still feels awfully expensive. Just looking back in time to the BITE store, the 2LP is $10 less compared to the pre-order of this one. Where is the added cost coming from?

Again, I don't mind paying a little extra for my favorite group, but then why am I again getting ripped off with such a steep shipping price?

Is there a licensed sample on the album were the label(s) have shrewdly made the consumer cover the cost?  (I'm not sure if this has ever been done, I just might be making it up.)

If I'm paying ~$80 for the 3LP and it's limited, at least tell me what it's limited to. I mean, What the fuck...

I couldn't agree more, but vinyl is the "hot new trend" these days, so it doesn't surprise me.

Earlier in the thread (reply #40), I pointed out that if you're in the US and ordering the 3xLP, you can save about $20 overall, including shipping, by ordering from the UK site (Virgin EMI) rather than the US site (Astralwerks).

Must say the back cover looks very minimal and clean!

Shipping is a bitch, and I don't really prefer those prices when it comes to ordering from afar. I'm still sticking with the 2LP, and save some money just in case another release drops from the Bros (GTKO/EOD maybe 'crosses fingers')

I'm seeing 44 quid for the 3LP plus 10 pounds shipping, which totals 54 pounds, which comes to AUD $97.45. How did you get charged $105?

The Australian store is funny - the 3LP is decently priced compared to the UK store but the 2LP in the Australian store is way overpriced compared to UK!

3LP - £44 converts to AUD $79 > Australian store is $80

2LP - £27 converts to AUD $49 > Australian store is $70!!!

I'm definitely getting the 3LP now from Australia, and will wait for the 2LP to drop in price somewhere in UK like Juno, and then import it later.

If so, that's disappointing. I much rather an original track we have not heard in any form.
If it means a track like Wo Ha or Let's Build A City, no thanks

Let U Build A City was great, even though it sounded like an old b-side (maybe from cwu), but Wo Ha and Direct Buki of course aren't the brothers best releases

"Of course"? Pah! If you discount CHEMICAL (which was more than a bonus album track), I reckon Direct Buki was the best of the bonus BITE tracks. Certainly the most playful.

EOD will be premiered tonight:

Apparently this is an Esport event: https://esportsinsider.com/2019/02/fnatic-virgin-emi-record-to-host-katowice-closing-party/
No word on when the track will be available.

Edit: SouthernBrother was two minutes faster over at the "new tracks recap" tread.

Besides it being pretty last minute, it's definitely not supposed to be a grand launch or anything. The tournament itself was scheduled ages ago. The closing party may have come together more recently but I don't think we can be too disappointed that this isn't more accessible. Virgin saw a potential event to throw out a little exclusive, probably more to test the water than anything else (I can't imagine they think that gamers and esports fans are their biggest target market), so they went for it and pushed it a little on social media to add some hype.

As for the EBW version of MAH, I forget who posted it (apologies), but this version is significantly longer than the album version/the version released earlier in the year. 8 minutes or something, IIRC.

I don't think the vinyl has shipped yet, but as soon as someone has received it, this will be the first place to hear all about it!

Actually, there is a "real life Mario Kart" in AR, in Belgium. I tried it and it's super fun. You have a tablet on your wheel to control the items, and the track layout and items are shown with projection mapping on the floor

A couple of days after the release of GTKO, I came across a file with some tracks from NoGeography. The FY version is 4:21, it starts with the first "free yourself" sample, and ends with the fading mixed with the ethnic chant of MAH.
If you, guys, want to give a listen to it, just bang!
Btw, I learned that tomorrow (it's still yesterday here) EOD is going to be released. Will we be having a fantastic day? I'm sure we will.

That's the album version of Free Yourself. Mentioned on page 5 of this thread. Anyone who pre-ordered the album on itunes was automatically sent a couple of the (released) tracks straight away. One of those tracks was the album version of Free Yourself. Somehwere here, I asked if anyone had pre-ordered and got the short version of FY, but up until now I don't think anyone has said that they got it.

Yeah, I remember Neorev posted that with the original details. I was hoping to find a primary English first retailer just incase there was a problem with the order.

Additionally, I was having difficulty remembering which store I ordered mine from when I order the import for 'Born In the Echoes' and was hoping someone might mention the store name. I think I did manage to track it down though, and it was ImportCDs.

I ordered both Japan edition CDs for Born in the Echoes from cdjapan and I can say they both went off without a hitch. What kind of shipping do usualy use? When i order something from japan on discogs i usualy take registered airmail if possible, but that is for things that are not in a hurry. For the release NG i don't want to wait 6 weeks to get it (after release), but shipping with DHL doubles the price of the cd.  :-[

There's no guarantee pre-orders will arrive before or on april 12. I did pre-order the CD but I dont expect it to be on my doorstep on release date. just go to a music store and pickup a copy there.

Hi Champiness, come back to the forum!
So the bit you're referring to on the poetry tape is approx 27.42 to 28.00.

I think MIKL mentioned an article about Dial-A-Poem a while back. Might be worth mentioning it again now, as it appears Michael Brownstein's "Geography" as well as Diane de Prima's Revolutionary Letters (Free Yourself) appear on the poetry album:
The Dial-A-Poem Poets (https://www.discogs.com/the-dial-a-poem-poets/release/3281870)
Am guessing Tom has this in the RAR studio.

Spoiler
it has to do with a certain vocal repeated through the song  :))

Did anyone do the pre-order, and any word yet if it's on the way?

Just checked the status of my order. No update. They say the'll email when it's been shipped.

I'm already planning to visit Everyday Music to buy a copy on Friday so I can look at it while I listen. I can return it after it arrives too ;)

I'm also highly considering treating myself to the vinyl, so I can look at everything BIG. So may not return anyways. It'll have a download code, right?

No Geography is much, much, much better than Born In The Echoes. All tracks flow nicely. There's better songs on this all than the singles and I appreciate the singles more within the context of the album.

I've posted this in the difficult subjects but I'll forever remember this on the eve of (destruction) the release of this new album that Julian Assange has been evicted and arrested:

Quote from: MIKL on Apr 11, 2019, 11:36

And this just happened on the eve of No Geography being released.

Wikileaks posted the video 10 min ago.

Got one and now I'm pouring it allll over me.

Eve Of Destruction. That Bass! The energy of the track now! Feels like a massive remix.
Now it sounds like a single. There better be a long/extended version. I want more of that bass, more of all of it, really.

The album really clips along. Almost like it's in a hurry.

Post by: Ben_j on Apr 11, 2019, 12:36
So, now that it's officially out in some parts of the globe, here's my review after a few listens:

Eve of Destruction
So much better than the version they played in their DJ Sets ! I'm glad they removed the "Ah, ah" vocals. The track feels very polished and it's one of the best on the album

Bango
I like how the first two tracks flow in together. I love the chopped "bang go bang go bang" vocals, but I feel like Aurora's vocals were quite unnecessary. Overall I really like it. It kinda feels like the lovechild of A Modern Midnight Conversation and Come Inside

No Geography
This really sounds like Orbital. I have mixed feelings on this track. It feels a little rushed (didn't Tom or Ed say somewhere it was the last track they wrote on the album ?), but I still enjoy it.

Got To Keep On
Still as good as it ever was, it blends in really well with the rest of the album

Gravity Drops
Weakest track of the album. Quite empty, goes nowhere... Really feels like a filler to complete the album :(

The Universe Sent Me
Upon first listen, it didn't really click, but after each listen I love it more and more, to the point that I think it's my favourite track of the album now ! My only problem with this track is that I always hear "Hi Kevin... Hi Kevin..."

We've got to try
It's a nice touch to put this track right after The Universe Sent Me, closing on the "I cave in" loop, with the response "I know we can make it girl, if we just try". Overall, the construction and cohesion of the album is a success. Born in the Echoes lacked that a lot.

Free Yourself
I feel like I heard it a thousand times already and don't know how to process the track anymore in the context of the album. The vocals take a new sense with the political message of the rest of the album for sure

MAH
I wish they'd take more from the EBW version but it's still a banger

Catch Me I'm Falling
Just like Gravity Drops, I'm not too fond of this track. Doesn't really go anywhere, but it has some more interesting ideas than Gravity Drops.

The Brexit message is more obvious than ever after hearing the lyrics of most of the tracks (and if it was not obvious enough, Brexit was initially supposed to happen tomorrow, on the day the album is out).

Overall, I'm pretty overwhelmed by how good the album is, after a so-so Born In The Echoes. I can't wait to hear the new tracks live, and I think there will be some disapointements over what track gets to be in the tour, because almost all of them would sound phenomenal.

Still processing the album as well but I'm even more blown away and overwhelmed with each listen. It's just so good. I agree with Ben_j that Gravity Drops is the weakest on the album but I feel like that disappointment will fade with continued listening.

No Geography needs to be longer, but it may be the way it's edited for vinyl (ends side B side A) and will flow better on CD? Will have to wait to confirm that.

Looking forward to giving it a more thorough review and seeing what everyone else has to say once it's sunk in  :)

Just like Gravity Drops, I'm not too fond of this track. Doesn't really go anywhere, but it has some more interesting ideas than Gravity Drops.
I like Dosen's vocal and I like the male sampled voice too (presumably from one of the many songs Mike Hanks (https://www.discogs.com/artist/1001682-Mike-Hanks?filter_anv=0&subtype=Writing-Arrangement&type=Credits) has written). I like the intro sounds and I like the fluttering high pitch synth (Vangelis-y). But yet I'm coflicted about the overall track. Parts of the production sound a bit too "Jan Hammer" for my liking. I feel like there's a better track trying to get out, here. But it's waaaay better than Gravity Drops.

Post by: androidgeoff on Apr 11, 2019, 19:08
Two listens, you all know the drill.

It's early afternoon, I'm breaking all the rules. It's time for the Noon of Sittingonyourcouch

SCROLL PAST IF YOU DONT WANT TO READ

MAYBE, DONT LOOK AT THIS TOPIC IF YOU HAVENT LISTENED TO THE ALBUM?

"But androidgeoff, I compulsively look at Reddit threads of Game of Thrones when I haven't watched the latest episode. The chance of spoilers... gets me riled up."

No Geography is on the speakers. I've got my map out to chart new territory. We're going to find Dog Planet, and in the process, ourselves.

Geordi, after your Level 1 diagnostic, have Ensign Crusher set a course for Dog Planet. We've heard some distress signals from that area.

Eve of Destruction:
Yo is that an Art of Noise stab?

Incoming message "Help. Our planet is being attacked by Romulans. This is the eve of destruction. Our planet is threatened. Please help us Picard."

Sacrifice is justified. There is a bassline. The signal is breaking. Scanners are detecting life in this album. Humanoid and canine. Interesting

Data "Maybe I'll find a friend. Friendship is based off familiarity."

Troi "... to spend the weekend, on shore leave, Captain, is needed."

Picard "Nonsense. My place is here. My place is Dog Planet."

Nene Hilario, of the Houston Rockets, makes a guest vocal appearance. Get it, big fella. Please take out the Warriors.

If "Here Comes the Drums" were called "Here Comes the Vocals" it would be this song.

PTB era explosion noises at the end! Bongos! Bingos! Bangos!

Bango:

Hey look a transition. I was born in the transitions.
Bingbingbingbingbingbingbangoooo
What is that drum fill from? Is that the same from Free Yourself?
Last 3rd is crazy

"Here comes the bongos"

Cat synths are invading. Their meows and yowls are all over! Set phasers on stun. Prepare to beam up.
Aurora's voice is great on this album. You can have my thunder.

Return of the kitchen table percussion. EML Ritual sends its regards.
Hey, Mr. Ochestra
"Mind bending flutters"

No Geography:

"baby baby baby baby" I mean "aeeeey aeey aeey aeyy aey aeyy" we got another transition boys. Remember...
Radiate meets drums and travels back to the 80s! Bittersweet song
Crazy that this is only the 3rd song, it could be a great closer too. But seems like this is the end of Arc 1 of the album
Tom "The reverb needs to be more impactful"
Ed "I brought 20 compressors. I said to them 'i'll take you along with me'"
Tom "Throw them all on! Put on the whale documentary!"
Ed "Engage"

Got To Keep On:

And the rain keeps on going on and on aaand oooooon
I've listened to this song too many times so I do not have an initial review. I've seen the damn thing live.
As of this point in the album, still the strongest song (to me) of all that I have listened to (but there are more songs! This could change!)
Will there be another transition?

Foreshadowing...

Tom "Got to keep on"
Ed "Our disguise. Yes. The Romulans mustn't find out"

The Bells Chime. Jeff Mills and the Hartnoll Brothers have flown in on their Federation Starships to aid the Enterprise.

Like Tears
Like Tears
Like Tears

For Fears

Swelling... more bells incoming
"Here comes the snares"

Me "gonna get a flipping here comes the marimbas before we get that damn song"

Gravity Drops:

No transition, but Orbital vibes for meeeee
Sleepy time warehouse music

Tom "Why didn't Adam let me use this for that movie he had. 'oh it sounds too chemical wah wah wah' I'll show him. 'oh I am going to hire an italian chef to cater my party, but we are all gluten intolerant so can you just like make kale salad???' Get out of here Adam. This song is dope."
Ed "Tom, your true nature is showing. Please. We must stay strong. The Brothers Must work it out."
Tom "Let me pitch these vocals down."
Ed "That's the Tom I know"
(Tom sarcastically writes on the album backing "Supa dope thx to Adam")

Really like that the percussion has no hats
To me, very un-Chemical, very fun and unexpected
Very legal
and very cool

Tom "Remember listening to In Visible Silence?"
Ed "I do"
Tom "Let's do that album"
Ed "We can't, we are the Chemical Brothers."
Tom "But we're also..."
Ed "We have to make our own album."

Tom, muttering to himself...

The Universe Sent Me:

"I cave in"

If you know who Trentemoller is, this reminds me of his later stuff
That would be a fun collab
So Tom and Ed you should reach out to him
Email subject "The androidgeoff Sent Me"

There is a bassline
Something about fingernails and a beautiful lady
You should know, something something nervous

"Here comes the reverse cymbals"

Show your Deadmau5 friends this song! They'll be hooked! He invented electronic music, you know. He also is the ruler of Mouse Planet, part of the Dog Planet alliance.

We've Got to Try:

There is no Dog Planet B
(Not a bad thing) Energy was lower, so this song picks it up!
Could use one more acid synth line ehehehe
Would be super interested in a "how it's made" of this song. Seems like they did a lot of manipulation and recreation from 1 song. Seems like a fun song to study

Ed "Tom, I know you are tired. We've been in the studio for 64 straight hours."
Tom "Super Smash Brothers is about to come out. They've been trying to steal our fans for the last 2 decades."
Ed "Tom, Super Smash Brothers is a game..."
Tom "THIS IS NOT A GAME"
Ed "Tom, your anger is misguided..."
Tom "This must be a masterpiece. Did the Michael Jackson sound-a-like e-mail back?"
Ed "Youngsters don't use e-mail. He sent us a message from his Finsta"
Tom "Why did he send a bunch of crying laughing faces, hands clapping, peaches? What are these 3 droplets that he used a lot?"
Ed "I think this means he agrees."
Tom "I am not versed in this language"

Data "Captain. If I may. Youths converse through a combination of irony, depression, and emojis. I can reconfigure my language mainframe and..."

Tom "That's enough, Mr. Data."

Free Yourself:

I already miss having transitions. Transition gods, please do not punish me for I have spoken ill and must repent
I must

Free Myself....

Dance

Out of the 3 of the live tracks, this one took the longest to grow on me. It has!
Those circuit bent kid's toys are in full force this album
Go was like "hey, can you expand on this idea?" And Tom was like "I really don't think this is a good idea. androidgeoff is going to be so nitpicky and my heart can't take it." Ed was like "But Tom! We've got to try! Even if he says some snarky comments and your feelings are hurt, you have got to keep on. You're Tom Rowlands! You can say you're mad as hell."

Tom "I'm not going to take it anymore. I'm not going to take it anymore..."

Then there was a crack

a smack

A crack and smack

Ed "Stop destroying those mockup album prints! They're only SAMPLES"

Tom "We don't use samples. WE ARE SAMPLES"

Ed "Tom, you know what we are..."

MAH:

Album version is good. Second listen through, I threw on the EBW version.
EBW version is sooooooo gooooooooooooood. 8 minutes of pure terror. I like the album version, I just like this one more. I like pizza with just veggies on it. I just like pepperoni and italian sausage pizza more. "This steak is wrapped in bacon." "Well... I guess I'll go for it over the one without bacon wrapped around it. But I don't feel good about it" This is my take. I choose the burger with an egg and onion rings on it over the one without those things. Is it so wrong? I was Born in the Leggo My Eggos. Waffles over pancakes. Waffle fries over regular fries. Tots over fries. Curly fries over fries.

Why do regular fries exist? To remind us that better fries exist. This is french fry advocacy. All fries deserve to exist, but cajun fries are better. Spicy garlic aoli. Mango aoli. Mix ketchup, mustard, and mayo. Throw in some garlic salt. You have a real condiment. Dip your fries in that while listening to the EBW version of this song. You will be so happy.

Actually, the EBW version is poutine to the album's chili cheese fries. MAH exists to remind us that EBW12 exists too and that it is really good.

Tom "I'm really sick of his constant food analogies. His egging and satire. I'm not going to take it anymore."

Ed "And as you should! For years, just like all those other forum nerds, he's picked apart our shit for too long. It's time to make an album that they all collectively can sit down and shut up after listening. Once they realize that we've made a killer album, the gravity of the situation will drop on them. They have no leg to stand on, no geography to explore. It's all been done, they say. But we can show them. We want our planet back. We want our universe back. Dog Planet is in turmoil. My opinion after my first listening to the entire album.
Th first half leaves me kinda  :-\ except for Eve of Destruction. But after EoD, it is quite a let down until The Universe Sent Me. Wow, I love this track ! Best "new" track in so far we had already had a taste of MAH, GTKO and Free Yourself.
Catch Me I'm Falling is good, but not as great as other album concluding songs (e.g. Wide Open, Surface To Air, The Private Psychedelic Reel).
I hope some of the songs will grow on me over the next listenings.

On my 3rd listen. Absolutely better than BITE and WATN. At this stage I think it's better than Further... and maybe even PTB :o

That's putting it in the realm of EPD, DYOH, Surrender and CWU. Which is a huge deal for me. Wow.

Seconding the comments that Eve of Destruction and Bango are seriously good tunes. There's an awesome cut up super early Chem Bros feel to Eve of Destruction and Bango that I love. And at first it felt like too many different vocal snippets but after a few listens it totally works and makes sense.

No Geography is pretty emotional, especially after reading Ed's interview where he talks about the words coming from that poem about distance and borders not being able to break apart love. My wife and I lived for a year on opposite sides of the world early in our relationship, so this resonates with me hard.

Then you get to Gravity Drops, and I don't agree that it's a weak track at all. It has the soul of one of those tracks from EPD like Three Little Birdies Down Beats. Sounds totally different, but there's something connecting them. Strangely it's that pitched down vocal snippet that hooks me in and puts a smile on my face.

The Universe Sent Me is another hugely emotional one, and really adds some depth to the album at this stage IMO. Love Aurora's vocals. And the emotional chord change build ups are fantastic. "I cave in" is a superb vocal loop for so many reasons.

Then the We've Got To Try -> Free Yourself -> MAH triple header is fantastic. I'll admit Free Yourself was the weakest of the singles for me, but in the context of the album it's great. It's actually turned the track around for me. I still prefer the MAH battle weapon version, but this version works great for the album too.

And the closer Catch Me I'm Falling... truly beautiful. Again, loving Aurora's vocals. Very emotional. The soul singer vocal sample didn't agree with me at first, but on 3rd listen I think it really works. A beautiful way to close out the album, but heart wrenching as well.

If the album keeps growing on each listen like it is, it might even break into the top 4.....

edit: Sorry, not Aurora on Catch Me I'm Falling. I was listening on Spotify so there's no liner notes or nuthin.

This album pisses all over Push The Button and Born In The Echoes. Born In The Echoes feels very slapped together and a bit uninspired to me. The production felt stagnant on Echoes. There is so much more depth to the production on No Geography and the tracks are so good you want them to keep going on forever. Born In The Echoes, I had that "Is this song over yet?" feeling for most of it save for EML Ritual, Under Neon Lights, and Reflexion. No Geography gave me those old school Chemical feels like Further.

I am quite a fan of We Are The Night and Further (minus Escape Velocity as trsck 2, think it should have been later in the album and Don't Think should have been on the standard release). I did not like Push The Button at all, unless the Bros. ever release Snow/Surface To Air in studio form. We Are The Night is much stronger than PTB.

To me, No Geography feels like the rightful follow up to Surrender. It feels like it's going for what Come With Us tried to do. It has that funk side I felt Come With Us should have focused more on that you could hear with b-sides like Base 6 and Hot Acid Rhythm.

Is it their best album since Surrender? Could well quite possibly be. I love it on first 3 listens and it is growing.

I put it on in the car today and my girl asked what we were listening to. "It's the new Chemical Brothers," I answered. A few tracks pass and she turns and asks "Who are we listening to now?" I looked at her confusingly "What?," I continued, "It's still the new Chemical Brothers. I told you!" She looked at me surprised, "This? This is the Chemical Brothers?!?!" She nodded her head, "Wow, this is different. I like it." "Better than that Born In The Echoes album?," I asked. "Oh God yes," she quickly responded.

The Chemical Brothers with No Geography...
The Prodigy with No Tourists...
Orbital with Monsters Exist...
Underworld with the Drift series...
Meat Beat Manifesto with Impossible Star...
The Crystal Method with The Trip Home...
Plus Autechre and Aphex Twin!

It's been a great time in electronic music for us old school 90s folk. Plus another new Meat Beat Manifesto album next month. :)

Amdroidgeoff's Dog planet review wins top honors for the evening (oh wait, it's midnight now where I am).

I couldn't sleep because Chems so I was browsing about and thought I'd check iTunes and there it was. The album, earlier than expected because it was still Thursday.

So... I'm not ready to review yet. I'm still listening to the album. But I'm blown away by the cohesiveness so far. Where Born In The Echoes felt disjointed in areas, this album is a solid follow up filled with the peaks and valleys and textured soundscapes that make me love what Tom and Ed do so much.

I will say right now, I'm in love with The Universe Sent Me. Aurora's voice is powerful when it needs to be, delicate when it wants to be, and so beautifully raw and feminine. I love the arrangement of her voice on this track.

Anyway, I'm gonna go back to  :music :music

We shall meet again back on Dog Planet soon!

The album really clips along. Almost like it's in a hurry.

My feelings too.

I think Whitenoise mentioned in his other thread this plays like a Chemical DJ mix, and I got that too.

Overall, I'm not feeling instant impact of like I did with the previous two releases (Further and BITE).

This album just feels really different for me, and I'm personally having a hard time absorbing it. If I were given the Pepsi challenge, (apart from a few signature sounds) I don't think I would pick The Chemical Brothers as producers of this album.  I'll admit my taste or pacing for music maybe has gotten stale, but as of right now all I can say is... It's new.

I look forward for this one to grow on me.

So my mate just clued me into a pretty cool link between Come With Us and No Geography: "Come with us, and leave your world behind" and now "If you ever change your mind about leaving it all behind, remember, no geography. Me, you him etc. I'll take you along. I'll take you along with me.". And the come with us synths later on. So cool.

I think I'm still processing the album. First thoughts, It's too damn short. And I think what I like from this album may differ to rest here from what I've read maybe. I feel a bit disjointed listening to it with the stronger tracks already been released and whats left to enjoy and soak in.

Eve of Destruction

Its OK. but...

(Comparing it to the early DJ version) What happened to the bass line? (and big bass). It was perfect? now its copying the house tribute synth? I liked how the DJ version was more simpler but quite addictive and had that groove to it still. And knowing the other vocal samples were going to come back for another hit cause they're so good and deserve the stage more. I wouldn't have mind if it went for longer with the original stuff. Why not thats what albums are for.

Bango

Nice to hear some faster drum rhythms and various synth stabs swirling around everywhere especially at the Give me my thunder part. You can definitely get that mix tape vibe that Tom was talking about from the first 2 tracks.

No Geography

This feels like a song thats a sequel to Escape Velocity with the guy talking again about travelling and escaping, energy and people. And sounds like the same from even Exit Planet Dust from One Too Many Mornings. "We're out of control". It feels like a moment in Stranger Things as well where the boys are reunited with Eleven from the upside down or something special like that.

Got To Keep On

Instantly loved this track when heard earlier versions and still prefer live version as already mentioned.

Gravity Drops

This is where I said my taste may differ to everyone elses for this album..

I actually think this is my favourite song on the whole album. I instantly liked it. Its different from them but has that mentality of theirs where they have perfectly crafted sound elements from bass and treble highlights and how its structured and played around with in rebellious way but in a cool slow groove. And its an instrumental.

The Universe Sent Me

Well its not what I thought it would be as warned by others on here regarding the hype machine reviews from online/publications which made sound like a different sound song altogether. I do like it but it feels unfinished and finishes too soon. Like the guitar riff. Another one for the Like Neon Lights, Hold Tight London Family. (4x4 beat, catchy guitar riff and hypnotic female vocal) I also almost get a Grimes vibe in parts.

We've Got To Try
The acid groove and beats what more do you want. Samples and a vocalist adds greater depth. Maybe my second favourite song on the album.

Free Yourself

After getting used to hearing Auroua in the other songs, you're almost tricked into believing its her now doing the Free Yourself vocals. Not much else to say I loved the song as well as GTKO when heard earlier versions. The transition is tighter into MAH.

MAH

At this point I'm thinking is the album nearly over already?! Knowing that this is the last chance of getting off on some euphoric soundscapes. (Knowing how the song goes already). Like FY and GTKO Ive heard this too many times leading up to the album.

Catch Me I'm Falling

The lyrics are bit raunchy if I'm interpreting them correctly. Last song was maybe Believe with lyrics "Can you feel me in between you". Its nice sounding and with the vocal sample. Kind of felt a bit short changed for some reason though I hate saying that but with that as the last song and it all over. Maybe another song should've been in-between MAH and this one?

I don't know where I sit with comparing it to other albums. With DYOH and Surrender still the best for me, I still think CWU, PTB, EPD were better albums than this one. This album is better than WATN and maybe the same as BITE (That album was diverse as well and had maybe some stronger songs with the exception of a couple of fillers more than this one)Its a somewhat better than Further. It depends on what type of chemical tracks you're in the mood for.

Hi everyone! Long time, no post. Thanks to Csar for reminding me of my login deets!

I'm just popping back in to join the chat about the new album  :music

Like a few of you have mentioned in this thread, I was disappointed with the last album. I felt it was quite disjointed and didn't really have much of a flow to it. There were stand-out tracks (EML Ritual & I'll See You There) but for me the rest felt like a collection of B-sides and didn't really work as an album.

Anyway, on first listen I'm really impressed with No Geography, which comes as a bit of a relief if I'm honest! I'm inclined to agree with Ben_j's review. Also, I'm pleased to hear the programming is much more like their earlier albums... open with a few bangers that nicely flow into one another > then take a rest with a melodic tune or two > then pick up with a couple more bangers > before a melancholic finale. It's a true Chemical archetype. Tried and tested, it works.

*edit: Oh yeah, the opening combo of Eve of Destruction and Bango is especially brilliant! Takes me back to the EPD and DYOH days. Ace  ;D

I only have one question regarding the bonus tracks on the Japanese release, as well as the extended tracks and instrumentals on the vinyl: does anyone know if these will be released in the future digitally? I'd especially love to get hold of a copy of the EBW version of MAH for my DJ sets  :music

Loving the new Album... but what's the story behind Bango? Why is it called that? What is it about?

Tom gave a rundown of each song to Apple Music. It seems Bango isn't about any one thing in particular but an idea collaborative that evolved and took form. Not sure the screenshot of my iTunes will attach to this post, but this is what it says about Bango:

"Bango"

"Auroroa's Response to playing her bits of music was so unexpected, brilliant, and inspiring. [For 'Bango'] I'd play her something and she'd come back and with angular words and ideas about unbalanced relationship dynamics and gods bringing thunder upon you. That's the excitement of collaborating with someone - arriving at something neither of you could have thought of on your own."

Edited: Screenshot worked! I will add the rest of the iTunes bits for y'all!

Been listening to Bango quite a bit. Not much of a tune but really fun production.
Listening to the bit from 2.40 to 3.10, I'm thinking this sounds strongly influenced by LFO's Freak (https://youtu.be/BL-0nC1vpmI?t=2). Both the bleepy bits and the mad staccato/jerky sounds. Not saying it's sampled but am saying: influence/inspiration.

Yeah I spotted that. It's on a Japanese import CD. I was referring to an mp3 we can download from the internet  ::)

In the past the lads have released digital-only tracks - Don't Think springs to mind - so I was curious to know if anyone had any inside knowledge before I spunk the best part of 40 quid on importing a CD just for three tracks. Fair?

^ There are no known plans to separately release EBW12 digitally (they didn't with EBW11).
As for the instrumentals that come with the triple vinyl as downloads...
Different nationalities on the forum were given different info about what bonus instrumental tracks they would get.

I see Ben_J (France) has been redeeming his bonus tracks today. I'll be interested to see if people in other countries get the same bonus tracks that Ben did. At some point in the next few days/weeks perhaps people on the forum can pool their knowledge/results?
Again Hubie, there are no known plans to release these separately. I guess they're meant to be a reward for spending big bucks on the vinyl.

BITE had not one but two different Japanese CD releases. Those of us who bought the first one (me) may have been a bit miffed when they later released a second version with even more bonus tracks. Who knows what they'll do? But I suspect these tracks will end up on the internet sooner or later.

Ps Is it really 40 quid? I'm seeing £17.20 + postage on CD Japan.

And the next thing you know is a voice from above does whisper the lines from the Geography poem we were discussing the other day. Ha, and indeed, looking at the demo stand it was right there! Although I was happy as f**ck, I checked out as fast as I could to not get spoiled, but what I heard was euphorigenic! Waiting until tonight to give this a proper and conscious spin!

It's the strongest start for an album of theirs, possibly ever. First 4 tracks are mind blowing
The title track is possibly the best title track they've done.
That track is going to sound fucking enormous live.
It has got a definite feel, not as dark as last album but definitely edgy
Shorter than usual.  Can tell Eds fully focused again.
Really enjoyed it, wanted more so job done I guess

I am liking more and more No Geography (the track), The Universe sent me and Catch Me I'm Falling.
I think I already love this album more than Born in the Echoes.

Am I right believing that 'Got to Keep On' was intended to be the album stalwart?

If so, it visually looks fun from a live perspective, but the track doesn't leave a huge impression on me. And since that track doesn't do the heavy lifting (for me), I think this is where the album might escape me.

Wow, just put it on. Crazy shit.  :music
Eve, you're too short. When you end, I want more of you! And you left out the "ha-ha-ha's" (https://youtu.be/AS6SS6Jftw8?t=130), why??
No, wait, what are you doing to me? The title track is over?  Are you kidding me???? THis could be an anthem! Fuck.
Anyways, The Eve of Bangography suite is awesome!
Got to Keep On! Yeah, with No Geography for crying out loud!!! GTTKO misses the sweet synth recreation of the bells (https://youtu.be/UhacoAYPMc8?t=386) like they used in their live sets. Why isn't it in there??? Would have given it a little more edge. Too bad. But it's nice.
Gravity Drops, interesting, simple. Maybe a little too simple? Undecided. Argh, fuck it, there's something about it I dig. Reminds of stuff I came up in FL studio back in the day.
Universe Sent Me, cool, this synth sounds like my Abakos VST I used to use. Expanding the Chems Universe, indeed. Too many Kevins at the end though. Five or six less would have been fine with me (where was Ed to tell Tom to cut it shorter?!).
Acid Dogs! Real vinyl clicks! Violins! And headbanging!!
Odd transition to Free Yourself. Hm. Too sudden? Wrong place? Did anyone mention context?
Mah-oh-yeah-oh-leeee, hahahahaha. I'm mad as hell - wha. Holy moly. Studio session for the win! Oh, plot-twist. Interesting. Darn, it's over too. I take it one more time! With the EBW.
Last track already. Sweetness follows. That is different for the chems. But radiates straight from the heart. A dreamy outro.

Uff. Over and out. Lots to digest. Don't get the comparisons to previous or esp. early releases yet, though, this is almost something I've never heard from them before. I'd argue, it's even less traditionally chemical than anything they've released so far. The one thing I miss, however, is a complex track of the likes of EV, TSU, TPPR etc, some wild ride type of tune. Univers Sent me is almost there but could use some more synth bleeps and bloops (it's banging nonetheless).

Yes! This album is so fine tuned. Born In The Echoes felt the opposite for me, stagnant and meandering. This album is much more alive and feels like the proper Chems we heard back with Further.

Geoff, that review should earn you a Pulizer Prize  ;D

I have to admit, after the first round of listening to the record, it was not what I expected and I was a bit dissapointed. However, I still remember when I first listened to Further, where I also wasn't impressed at first but it soon grew to be my favourite album, ever. That taught me to be skeptical of my first impressions  :D
After a few spins, I'm liking and even loving it more and more. The first three tracks flow so excellent together, they could be their own EP. EOD is an excellent opener, the vocals in Japanese are something really fresh. Bango is fun and fast, without going over the top. NG might as well have been an amazing closing song, but that would destroy this trinity.
GTKO remains just fantastic and is easily one of the best work the Brothers have ever done.
Gravity Drops is by far the records weakest point. The first few seconds sound so promising, and then everything falls flat. Maybe this would work better as a short intermission of 1-2 minutes.
Fortunately, the album picks it up again with TUSM. That calm start, and then the song progresses so much over it's six minutes, there's a vast soundscape to discover!
WGTT and FY just get better with each listening.
MAH releases all the pace and power at once that the previous tracks have kept back a bit (that's ok though, not everything has to be a dancefloor smasher).
CMIF then calms the whole thing down and brings it to a conclusion. Certainly not a revelation given their excellent collection of closing songs like TPPR, The Test, STA and TPWHYN, but I like it.

Conclusion: With their ninth studio Album, the Chems keep the fine balance between creating music with their signature style I love so much, while also making it sound fresh, developing it and packing a few surprises in there. As many said, this is an "Album" album, for the most part beautifully structured (something which I missed in BITE, which feels more like a collection of mostly great to excellent individual songs). Without the disruption of GD right in the middle, it would come very close to Further.
There are parts of their catalogue which I've listened to more than 50 times and still discover new things in them, I expect that this will keep up with No Geography.  :music

Stefan, the main body of your review leaves me with no reason to write my own review. It's as though you scanned my thoughts while I was sleeping. Even the stuff about cutting Gravity Drops down to 2 minutes. At exactly 2.46 when I realise it's coming around for another spin is where I think: ok enough. BTW folks, what does the sampled vocal say?

But more importantly I agree with all your positive comments too.

Really digging the new album! If anyone gets a Japanese edition and it has Nene's lyrics in the booklet, let me know/send me a pic. I have been studying Japanese to kill time between Chem albums over the past few years. I've been trying to transcribe the lyrics, but they're hard to hear in some spots and isolation tricks don't help much. It'd probably come out to be the Japanese equivalent of "Hi Kevin." Maybe a remix will come along with better audability.

Just got done with my first vinyl spin. Probably my 5th listen overall. This is the Chemical Brothers album for me. I absolutely love it. I didn't start following the Chems until 2006 (I was 13 at the time.) No Geography hits me harder than any other release since then. I have been so giddy since late Thursday night, almost in shock at how perfect this album is for me and where I'm at in my life. There is so much that I want to say about it but the right words won't come.

I'm still dazed by this new marvel Brothers made and can't write anything coherent about it beyond how immensely I'm enjoying it.
I love how fresh and at the same time strangely familiar it sounds. I can't put my finger on it. It sort of gives a 90's vibe at times, if that makes any sense.
I love how at 3rd listen I've fallen fiercely in love with Catch Me I'm Falling. On each next listen it got more beautiful. It's ridiculous.

No Geography - The Universe Sent Me To Review It

2015 was the year when the dark and furious 'Born in the Echoes' came into the picture.

Quote from: inchemwetrust on Jul 17, 2015, 20:14

Deformed, Deranged, Delicious

So here we are again as we do many times. Write our reviews, compare thoughts, another post, etc. But alot of things have changed since the last album including changes in this world lately. Gaining acceptance in social media, crazy political storms, the #metoo movement, anti-vaxxers, movie studios rehashing the same old shit, music streaming still aint making enough money for the artists, and how in the hell do people make a living off of making Youtube videos?

Speaking of change, while people used to believe that the brain became fixed after a certain age, newer research has revealed that the brain never stops changing in response to learning.

Example 1: The Chemical Brothers
1) Learn a different way to put out an album using dated equipment.
2) Try new album concepts to pull away from the last album
3) The 'Chemical' sound is not a distinct sound. It is a way of putting music together from past experiences to make new and distinct ones.

The 9th album, No Geography! A Review! A Change!

Note: Album was listened 5 times. Twice on record, 2 times from a streaming music service  and one from an mp3 album which included playback through speakers and a sub at a Guitar Center.

Packaging and artwork is such a change from the black and white albums from the past. I really like the font used for the album sleeves and the back of the album. 10 tracks make up the album so lets test them.

Eve of Destruction - There's a drive to it. Love it when that 90's house kicks in at 1:45 with a superb sample of "Gotta find a friend to spend the weekend" Very tricky of the bros to make another version of this track that is much different than the DJ version they played live, but its not as loopy! 2:46 changes it up with Nene rapping. Great first statement track. Good Aurora!

Bango - There's now a breakdance fight! And I love it. I actually attempted a windmill on my living room. There's a party going on in here, as if you just parked your car and heard the party down the street and you knew which house the music was coming from! Did Jimmy Castor and Shiela E get busy or what? Near the end, it sounds like Chrono from Kraftwerk for some reason. A Banger!

No Geography - I feel this should've been the last track! There's a feeling of completeness of some sort of goal that has been reached. The song definitely has a Rockmaster Scott (Roof is on Fire) to it. "Ill take you along with me" says alot here. The emotional of all the tracks. So far i'm really impressed with the album. Thanks you to Mr Brownstein for giving life to this track with your words.

Got To Keep On - I admit, I'm still not bored with song. Tbh, I actually put this in my top 3 chemical songs as of now, right below Star Guitar, and Chemical Beats. There's a movement and space this song creates to force you to be a part of something you wouldn't normally do if you were by yourself or alone...and that is to dance.  We have a winner!

Gravity Drops - It's.... ok! Sort of has its own identity or special trait as the previous tracks. But it sounds like if I was waiting in the lobby of the international space station and looking out thru an airlocked window and seeing stars and planets sending signals to each other. Its passable study music! it needs another sound element to lift it.

The Universe Sent Me - Tough Call! The last 1/3 of the track should've been used more and spreaded out. Really hard to feel this track. I feel Aurora wasn't really needed on this track. I think she caved the track in! Bad Aurora!

We Got To Try - Ok! Were back on track! YES I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT GIRL! So many bit and pieces to chew on. Kind of like a box of chocolates with so many tastes. The most ambitious track on the album. Love those strings. I'm bobbing my head on 2:32. The album is still going strong so far. Brilliant track!

Free Yourself - Of all the tracks on the album, this one didn't sit too well with me at first listen but I really wanted to like it because, well, it was the first single of the new album, and the excitement of the new release was sort of hiding my real displeasure. I appreciate that my tolerance has changed with some chemical tracks in the past that were hard to listen at first, But this track grew on me admittingly. Another dance stomper with just enough kick to get praise!

MAH - Most improved track for me after repeated listens. It has aged very well. I admit the EBW version contributed to my love for this track more. Those buzzing pulses throughout and at the end are just a small part of the energy with the matching sample. Strongest sounding track of the bunch. Damn! Just love it!

Catch Me I'm Falling - Not a closer, but very spacey! "The danger is so much greater" sample reminds me of a Moby track. Not sure which instrument is mostly used in this track (arp maybe) but I love the squeaking of it ( if you can call it that) but that alone doesn't help much. Stephanie Dosen vocals are here but I also feel they weren't needed as they don't positively impact or lift the track. An instrumental would've been fine. A relaxing end finishes the album.

Final Score:
Eve of Destruction - 8
Bango - 9
No Geography - 8
Got To Keep On - 10
Gravity Drops - 7
The Universe Sent Me - 5
We Got To Try - 9
Free Yourself - 8
MAH - 9
Catch Me I'm Falling - 6

Verdict
No Geography Is a an reinvigorating, sampler-slapping, foot-stomping, gear-shifting package that surpasses at least half of their other albums in the dust, but faults on collaborations, and minor deterrents that made it come close to the upper echelons such as Dig Your Own Hole and Surrender. But you have to hand it to Tom and Ed since they started this journey back in 95 with 'Dust', as they can still 'Bango' it out with the rest of EDM/Dance acts out there now. No Geography is a barrierless escapade that you can find on the living room floor with your headphones on and not giving a crap on what's going on in this world.

Much Love To Tom and Ed and all that they do for their music and fans. Thank you for this album! Love is all!

Hi Kevin! I get the joke now

One more thing...

This album is better than:
BITE
PTB
CWU
WATN

Since the last time I listened to an album of The chemical brothers in repetition for a long time, it was in the era of dig your own hole. Now, for heavenly reasons, the universe made me perceive in the most apotheosical way, that this album will be listened in an amount without limit or without end, that is, once again: infinite repetition.

This is just majestic. This makes me feel like a kid again, playing those CDs that my brother used to get every thursday afternoon after his work. Me and my little boombox enjoying those sweet sounds in the air, without worries of every upsetting thing going on around me. It's just joy... pure, flawless happiness. Will do a proper review in my spare time. It needs one.

This feels like the 90's once more. A return of the original Art-Form. Let's keep dancing to the mind bending brothers.

The greatest identifying quality of any exceptional Chems album is consistency. The demand for the record to be listened to in full, the focus in tone and the perspective that the album is coming from. This is the most important thing that gives an album its identity and increases its longevity. No Geography is so strong in this respect, in my opinion, the strongest since CWU. It is such a comforting and exciting release.

True. I've got a playlist where all the chemical songs are listed in order of release - album, then album b-sides, next album and so on. For example, i can sometimes start the listening from TPPR skipping all the other songs from DYOH, but with No Geography i just can't do this. May be it's because of fresh emotions of the release or something else, but i can't start it from Bango or any next song.

Bango's bongos may not be from the Bongo Band's Apache as suggested in a review. I think they're from J.J. Johnson's Willie Chase.
Of course bango's bongos start most clearly at the end of Eve of Destruction...
Anyway, judge for yourself.

Ha, oh well, I wasn't as abstemious as I wanted to be. It was so tempting, really, I had to at least check out those 15 seconds promo clips and I was of course accidentially exposed to EOD, GTTKO, FY and WGTT through their DJ mixes and live sets (some of which I edited). But when they uploaded that Free Yourself breakbeat clip which I could not stop listening to, I finally caved in and re-watched the Dom&Nic video with sound on. So there you have it, I sinned!

However, up until that moment, it was quite a bizarre thing to deliberately not listen to any new material. Like when they were broadcasting live sets in 2018, I muted the volume whenever an unknown track popped up (of course sneak peeking here and there and then quickly muting again, you know, just to check whether it's over yet ;) ). But overall I must say it was all worth it. Not to really know what to expect and being spoiled as much is such a great experience, especially given todays marketing strategy of excessivley releasing singles before the album's official release. I mean, half the album was already out there so I reckon that would have taken away some of the excitement and fun of exploration.

If we're lucky enough to get yet another album from them, I'll try my best to avoid listening to any new material in advance altogether.

Bango's bongos may not be from the Bongo Band's Apache as suggested in a review. I think they're from J.J. Johnson's Willie Chase.
Of course bango's bongos start most clearly at the end of Eve of Destruction...
Anyway, judge for yourself.

J.J. Johnson - Willie Chase

Sounds very close but the bongos there have some sort of triplets/ drum rolls which Bango doesn't. I'd say it could very well be the source of inspiration because the booklet states that the guys from replayheaven played the additional drums. Anyways, great find!

Cool that's all helpful thanks dude.

Yeah I can't remember where I found it for £40 (incl. postage to UK), might've been Japanese HMV, I'm not sure. I'll check CD Japan again, I don't think it was in stock last I checked.

What's BITE? Google's not telling me much  :-\

Japan bonus tracks only in m4a. Instrumentals, not yet. With a bit of luck, I'll be having my US cd on Wednesday. This time, not even a South American version of this album.
(Japan bonus are on youtube already).

Yeah the video is Aurora going up to 7 eleven with her friends

But they all left their credit cards and money at the hotel room

So when the cashier rings up the bottle of Dasani, Aurora realizes she does not have any money

"We can't afford the water!" She exclaims to her friends

So one of them (he has a stoma because he smoked too many cigarettes) pulls out a gun and shoots the cashier

"Sacrifice is justified"

It's a really weird video

The download code with my 3LP gave me the option of downloading an mp3 and/or a WAV zip. A nice surprise was you get the whole album along with the three bonus instrumentals. The WAV folder takes up 655mb of hard disk space. Mp3 folder takes up 150mb.

Glad they gave the full release and bonus tracks as a WAV option with the vinyl . I hate when a vinyl release only gives MP3 when it doesn't take that much to also include lossless.

Strange, Chemical Brothers are a major electronic act and they never released in hi-res. I would gladly rebuy their discography if they reissued it in hi-res.

I have listened to the album a lot of times since last Friday. I already love it more than Born in the Echoes. The epicness of The Universe Sent Me easily makes this song on my top 3 of the album.
I find The Universe Sent ME and MAH are excellent songs. Free yourself, Eve of Destruction, No Geography, We've Got to Try and Cath Me I'm Falling are good tracks, but I would not listen to them on repeat.
I almost always skip Gravity Drops and Bango.

Absolutelly love the Eve of Destruction
with the first listen I was a little upset with the different bassline but with the second one without thinking about the old one and it sounded so much better the album grows on me with every single listen I think that they need just one last single/video from the album and it must be the Eve of Destruction!
Now imagine if Left Right was the No Geography track... it will fit it perfectly

It'd be so dumb but so appropriate

Well, I hope my cd arrives today! What I still don't quite get is the artwork. First, it is a photograph from another album; was it mentioned in the sleeve? On the other hand, as I said, I understand NG has some sort of political connotation on the lyrics, but what does the picture of soldiers and a war tank pointing to a bridge have to do with this political context the album was created and released? (I really love the image though). I'd be glad to know your opinion.
Btw, I feel the instrumentals will get soon for all of us, and I wanted to know if there is a MAH instrumental. And searching on the net, I found a NG (Radio Edit): I suposse it's a fan edition (2:13). I hope a new video is released next (EOD); I grant that those visuals would've been great as part of the artwork!

Ha! Someone on Discogs has listed the messages in the runout grooves for this version.

A deliberate mis-spelling of sovereignty. That's a caustic swipe at Brexiteers and their desire for Blue Passports and "getting their country back". Like this:

It brings zero advantage, it's more expensive than getting the thing at the shop the day of the release. Yep same for EBW12. For those of us who were able to walk into a decent record shop, it was possible to just buy it as soon the official release date arrived - with no postage charges. Meanwhile, some people here were still awaiting delivery from the Universal store weeks later.

I'm curious, does anyone have some additional thoughts or changed feelings about the album? Where does it personally rank now that it's fully assimilated into our blood stream?

It feels short. Having got to know all the songs super well now, I get to No Geography and I already can feel the end coming. "Oh, there's only GTKO, Gravity Drops, then The Universe Sent Me, then We've got to Try..." etc. I do feel a little like pressing play at the start gives a much more finite feeling the whole experience than previous albums did. I'm not saying I forget about tracks in older albums, but the length of Surrender or CWU makes those tracks' arrival feel like a welcome surprise.

I think it's somewhat down to the order of the tracks as well. MAH and Free Yourself right near the end, and Free Yourself being a shorter version. Catch Me I'm Falling also isn't the absolute best closer, which I think most of us can agree on.

Don't get me wrong, the album still slaps super hard and is definitely a magical listening experience. But I couldn't put it higher than maybe 4th, due to that feeling of inevitability attached to it. And that's hard to say about an album with Got To Keep On on it!

Hey, it's nearly 6 months since release!

I see some of the prior posts (before the question I'm about to pose) are still feeling the vibe of 'No Geography'. But I'm curious, does anyone have some additional thoughts or changed feelings about the album? Where does it personally rank now that it's fully assimilated into our blood stream?

The album so far has been associated with some of the happiest memories I've ever made in my life thus far, so in terms of rank it's wayyy up there! (I still bump eve of destruction on the daily)

We need a good b-side or two. Come on, Tom & Ed. Give us some mo beats.

Thanks for the answers so far guys.

I think I like certain tracks more now than I did upon initial listen. For instance, 'We've Got to Try'. The novelty has worn off a bit. I love the bridge and drop, but within the track, the lead-up to that point is kinda numbing. I think I would prefer this track in a vacuum.

And then on the flip side, 'Free Yourself' is a really solid track despite all the flack it gets. It has stiff competition when you rank it amongst the "pantheon of bangers" the Chemical Brothers have released throughout their career. Not as challenging, but I think it's really fun track, with a great music video to boot!

The perfect woven trio of 'Eve of Destruction', 'Bango', and 'No Geography' sounds really great. But I can sympathize of having that feel of premature ending once No Geography (the track) wraps up. Probably, not the first to say this but the "trio" should have been placed at the end of the album. 'MAH' or 'Free Yourself' would've been totally capable of opening the album and setting the tone. Even 'We've Got to Try' could have done the job, but might have been a bit more divisive of a choice.

I don't like 'Got to Keep On'. I was hoping this would change over time, but I'm still stuck in this mode. It's a strange progression to go from an emotional track ('No Geography) to a quirky dance number fueled by bells and claps ('Got to Keep On'). On its own, It's a interesting disco-y hybrid concept, but I just can't seem to like it how it wants to be enjoyed. 'Fantai' is an improvement in tone, but lacks structure. Sorry guys and gals, I know you love this track...

I ranked it here before, but I still think the album settles somewhere in the bottom 3. It struggles to have a defining track, and nothing from this album is a top track from their collection (although, the self title album track comes close). It keeps itself out of the gutter by having an significant moment with the trio of Eve of Destruction/Bango/No Geography. The collection of songs fits and sounds better as a whole, rather than 'Push the Button' or 'We Are the Night'.

I would recommend the album, just not to a beginner to The Chemical Brothers.

I don't listen to this album very much lately.
Currently I'm enchanted with Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and even Vera Lynn, so I cannot be bothered with anything else, for now.
But I listen to Catch me if I fall regularly, at least once a day.

Edit: Catch me I'm falling, obviously.
I was very 'relaxed' that day  ;)

Nice of you, Bosco, to bring this topic up again as it reminds me that I've been meaning to write some sort review for quite some time but never got around to it. Maybe soon I'll give it a real shot, so just very briefly: Yes, I still love No Geography and give lots of tracks a fairly regular spin, be it in the car or at home. According to my media player counter I've listened to its title track 49 times alone. So there's that. It's a wonderful album, not without flaws and yes, it's quite short... which I've come to acknowledge isn't necessarily a bad thing! It never drags.

I treat this album as a designed-for-concerts one. Upon release it felt quite bland to me, no real itches to relisten it again and again.

I started to appreciate this album much more after seeing them live this summer. The new songs sounded just amazing there, easily highlights of the concert for me. Even now, when I occasionnaly listen to their Glastonbury show, I often skip to the new tracks. 'Free Yourself' is entirely a different beast when live.

I still listen to this regularly, or at least because of algorithms, songs from No Geography pop up often when my music is on shuffle.  As a whole, the album is an easily managed (time-wise) bite-sized chunk of happiness and brief escape, if that makes sense. It's what I needed to hear these past few months. Getting to be at their shows was truly a highlight in an otherwise challenging and difficult year. I still like the way I feel when I listen to No Geography, and overall it continues to feel very of-the-moment. How the album ranks I guess depends on where I am and what I'm feeling, at the moment. As for where it ranks in terms of album placement in the span of their career, I dunno. Ranking is tough for me, why the Chems have to make it so hard! :D

I wish Chems would rework/remix the title track No Geography, especially for live shows. Live, it just needs something more epic and soul lifting to set it off. I wish we got more reworks like they did with Eve Of Dubstruction.

Hahaha I'm down for that.

I was watching their latest Glastonbury performance and that chopped up soulful uplifting hook came on. It has a great build up, but you kinda expected a different beat/groove to come in when it finally kicks in. No Geography is problem my favorite track on the album, but it's great if Chems made a more funkier, housier version for the live show to keep that uplifting feeling going.

Number 2 for Top 50 albums this year. Good effort for an australian indie radio station. Think of it as a BBC radio 6 equivalent or KCRW something like that.

For so many years I've just assumed electronic acts would never get top 5 spot in polls like this favouring more guitar based bands but times have been changing since the 90s.

I cannot believe a year has passed already.

So, I admit to not having purchased any of the remixes for this album: a few are pretty good, but none of them wowed me at first compared to the originals. We've discussed it before, but I'm still old school in that I prefer physical releases and collections, even though I rip them and listen digitally. And also, we are spoiled by streaming services, so that is a trade off I suppose (but I'd rather HOLD them). This past weekend I was listening through my Apple TV and played all of them in a row and have found a renewed appreciation for some now that time has passed. I really wish they were released on a physical collection similar to the Japanese version of Born In The Echoes.

IT'S BEEN TWO FKN YEARS <3

And I can clearly say, that this one is my second fav one from the bros, right after DYOH.
Still remember, how fkn happy I was, when I got my copy one day before the global release, even got my instagram post liked from the bros themselves, which only doubled the happines.
Must admit, that this album was the one which helped me to deal with overcoming the very hurting accident in my life, so I feel the really emotional link with this one.

Fav tracks 2 years later?

Eve of Destruction (who doesn't love it?, Still hope, that they'll release that beta mix of it tho!)
No Geography (It's such a powerful and fkn beautiful track, I wish it was longer)
MAH (Simillar to the title track, but it's power comes from the totally different source. One of my personal themes)

It's time to blast the album once again <3

The mini mix that is Eve of Destruction/Bango/No Geography is pretty dang good. But in terms of favorite tracks, No Geography is the only that makes my list from those three.

No Geography

Query for the Forum / Chembase team.

Is it time we merge the No Geography threads into Music:Response now that FTBF is being released?

Yes, Ryno. Reason I haven't moved it yet is that I need to fix a sloppy code of mine that produces some error log entries. I'd like to keep it maybe as a subforum instead of amalgamating it fully.
