They took too long to release another album. The most success they will see, whether their sophomore album is real or not, is by teasing the idea of it existing. It's awesome they are doing some live shows (dj sets?) this summer. But I think they would be better off releasing any new music via an alias.

After so long, I thought this band went to extinction. The first (and only for now) album was majestic.

Clearly we don't want this thread to be another place for aimless speculation...

BUT.

The evidence presented here (http://www.stereogum.com/1878960/avalanches-frankie-sinatra-out-friday-other-new-songs-include-subways-the-wozard-of-iz/news/) that there could be a new track from them coming today is pretty exciting.

Also, I just called +44 800 098 8938 and listened to the short but tantalizing loop of their new song 'Subways'. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Is it a similar loop from the teaser documentary or a different one?

Theres still demand and interest with them as they are doing more live shows and promotion overseas than they are here in Australia. (Thats always a sign they are for an australian music act if they get promoted that way). And as past reports have said that album alone has become cult status. Collaborators like Ariel Pink is a nice fit for them. I'm hoping and assuming they will do a national tour down under later after the only Splendour in the Grass appearance this year.

Hmmmm...

I'm not completely sold.

That's the one song they chose to 'return' with? Doesn't hit like it should.

I'm excited for the album. And let's be honest, their best (https://is.gd/kf2DB5) tracks (https://is.gd/T0rMD9) were never the singles, but still...

I think they've shot themselves in the foot here by waiting so long. The same problem Tom Vek had. The longer you wait, the higher the expectations. It wont change how incredible Since I Left You is, but I will definitely be judging Wildflower more than I would have if it had come out 13/12/11/10 years ago.

We shall see.

I'm certainly less bummed about not being able to see them after hearing that. Though I would certainly lose my shit if they played A Different Feeling...

I only recently heard and got on the Avalanches train (thanks to Brian for playing Since I Left You on the way to Chicago). No buildup or hype here for the second album here, and I seriously agree about Frankie Sinatra. It does not hold up.

I agree with you regarding the expectation.

For this single, I think that if we would take one of the tracks of Since I Left You alone, it will never be a hit. It's the whole album that makes sense. I'm expecting the same thing here, this is why I don't care too much about this single.
By the way, for the same reason you clearly explained, I try to not have a high expectation for the album, just like the band is another, not the Avalanches.

I'm intrigued. I like the quirky video, and happy that they worked with MF Doom, his flow is the tightest! (god, I'm so white...)

Its the original guys in the group, Darren has left though apparently.

Frontier psychiatrist was a single they got attention with from SILY and most people that aren't mega fans know them for. just like Frankie Sinatra which reminds me of it. Frontier Psychiatrist was my least fave track on the whole album so Im definitely not judging them just from Frankie Sinatra. Its OK but they are definitely a full album band and they've said that again and why proper fans like them.

I was happy with the interview Zane Low did on Beats 1 with them.

I freaking LOVE Frontier Psychiatrist!  The album actually had to grow on me (took me two whole listens to love it through and through) because I expected everything to be like that.

I never bought the album, but for me the single release of the title track was what I knew them for (and what I bought). I'm pretty sure I heard the album at some point and concluded that the title track was the only one that interested me.

They're playing a festival that I'm due to attend next Sunday, so time-clashes permitting, perhaps I'll catch them and figure out what the fuss is about. Mind you, I'm a bit skeptical about a live performance from a 'band' that relies on samples of other people. Potentially boring, no?

Yeah SILY was the second single after frontier psychiatrist (in OZ anyway) which I liked better out of the 2 and I think 'Radio' was released as another single later which I liked. I think SILY maybe came before frontier psychiatrist over seas not sure.

You guys are missing out! tracks like 'a different feeling', the epic 'live at dominoes', 'electricity' etc.

by the video above it looks like the are doing more of a live edit, dj mix instead. they're pretty crazy mixers. Before the first album, the had a regular night called 'Brains' here in Melbourne at a now gone dive bar in the city called St. Jeromes (which has now evolved to a music festival) and would experiment with old records and mash ups before 2 many DJs and Girl Talk took over later on with more contemporary stuff. So I'm predicting they're going back to their roots and doing that. They did have a live band setup when toured SILY in the past but were breaking body parts on stage by getting too crazy performing.

If you've got some time to kill heres a DJ mix which is an earlier version of SILY with different songs and treatment including songs like bob dylan, michael jackson, cyndi lauper intertwined with the SILY tracks.

Erm... Unfortunately not.

I'll wait to hear that in proper quality. And in the meantime, see if I can find a SILY track being played at Primavera to see if they're just pressing play on their recordings.

We had Electricity as the third single over here. With the sublime Ernest St. Laurent remix of 'A Different Feeling'.
Radio was an import that I never bothered getting as it only had Frontier Psychiatrist and the video as a B-Side.

You really are. And 'Etoh'.
I think the moment I began to understand the entirety of SILY (having also gotten into them via Frontier Psychiatrist, along with a recommendation from my form tutor at school) was the moment I really grew in terms of musical appreciation.
The first few listens had me fixated on very few sections that sounded enough like Daft Punk or normal 'dance' music. But one walk on the Dorset coast with my walkman in 2002, everything clicked. And it was 'Etoh' that really won me over.

Yeah. This is a top, top mix. I have it in iTunes as When I Met You though. Guess that's a fan title.
Their breezeblock mix is pretty swell too.

they were swaying if that counts for anything ha. but yeah not as excited as I thought. Not sure how popular they are in Spain though.

There was another gig in London they did before Primavera too I can't find anything yet.

They had a few mixes on there old website, looks some of them are there in reddit with some more ripped triple j ones.

Electricity was out before SILY album in OZ as an EP which is floating around online its slightly different. I like this cut/edit with more break downs and the random techno beat slam breaks and more recognisable female vocals in parts without the effects from one of their friends.

And it costs more than the ticket price to get into London these days.

ALSO. Regarding mixes, this one features a couple of tracks from The Chems...

I caught about half an hour of The Avalanches on Sunday at Field Day in London. And indeed they dropped the same bit of Another World. There was also a smidgen of Orbital's Belfast and a version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine by a female who definitely wasn't Marvin Gaye. The crowd was nothing like as large as that Primavera crowd, although the tent they were in was nonetheless pretty full. After a while though, when people realised it was just a DJ set they started to filter away to other things. I ended up in a smaller tent watching Junior Boys, and I have to say that the Junior Boys crowd appeared to be dancing and having more fun than the Avalanches crowd. Sacrilege I know...

Fair enough. at least you can say you saw them and can make a valid opinion. I think it might be why these tweets were posted and why they uploaded the whole mix to listen to (which has since been taken down by either soundcloud or someone in there group).

So the album is pretty much out now. I like it. My first listen was like the fist listen to SILY where it is soo much to take in it just goes over your head and whatever your ears or mind pick up first is like a starting point to discovering the album more and pretty much listen to the whole album over and over and you keep picking up more things you like about it. And even getting a Beatles sample officially approved is a pretty good achievement you're getting well recognised/and or respected. They also sampled another paul mccartney song as well. But here is a link to some samples and comments they revealed track by track if you're interested:

My first play through the other day and I wasn't really awed.

Favorite track had to be "The Noisy Eater" with the Biz. And I still really like "Frankie Sinatra".

I think its a really solid listen overall, I'm just not rushing to play it over again.

Also, I like what they bring to the table with their hiphop production. It would be nice to hear them do more of that.

I like the album, pretty rich with details/samples, like SILY, so it grows. Would've liked better transitions personally, you do get that with Subways/Going Home though.

I finally heard the promo version of SILY, still wrapping my head around an additional track.

They wanted to make a whole album and film out of it but had funding setbacks for it and this is just a what could've been. They still want to work on it though. I've recently listened to another local radio interview and they said they have more music that didn't make the album because it just didn't transition/fit well with the whole album but they want to release it later in some form.

Here's the interview with a little more on the film and other stuff:

http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/music/tours/the-avalanches-have-conquered-health-issues-lawsuits-lost-funds-and-empire-of-the-sun-to-bloom-again-with-wildflower/news-story/d550cbd79fca08274ecd28887c5f518b

These film makers/artists help run a indie movie night in Brooklyn which I might check out when I go over there on my holiday.

In another article they revealed they were working with a south korean illustrator though. So either its a collaboration or the above was just a fan made video which I thought was in the first place. extract from other article:

They worked on an ambitious but ultimately doomed animation-and-music project for two years. The scale of it was massive. It was to come out under The Avalanches' name as a feature-length animated movie made with hand-drawn cells, done by an illustrator in South Korea, and with Avalanches' music.
"It was inspired by Yellow Submarine," says Chater, "and 1960s Japanese pop-art. Like a cartoon for grown-ups. It was going to be this big, beautiful hand-crafted thing,  a really fun psychedelic, hip-hop cartoon." But it was funded privately, and very expensive, and the money fell through at the last hurdle.

I like the whole album now, frankie sinatra even now how it fits in the album. The noisy eater reminds me of the remix of Airs Sexy boy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQ1Hr01ODz0

(I'm sure theres maybe a few other tracks that use eating out there somewhere though)

The underwater part going into Wozard of IZ into Sunshine was a beautiful climatic moment you'd find in SILY too.

I need to give it another listen, but on first play... I'm pretty bored.

The Wozard of Iz was cool. And the breakfast part of Noisy Eater.

I don't know. It just seems like they've opted to use a very particular type of sample. Lots of strings, folk and 60s/70s pop. No Daft Punk drums, no Madonna, no Stool Pigeon or 80's pop in general. And it makes for a very samey sound throughout.

Also Kevin Parker is credited for additional drums on Going Home. I heard nothing that sounded like anything that wasn't from the samples. Disappointing.

Its a different vibe more stoner 70s in parts more rough like a cut up mixtape.

When I don't have time to engage myself in the whole album I go to the Harmony through to Sunshine part. Or the beginning sometimes skipping Frankie to subway to Colours. Im really curious about the extra material they are really keen to get out as soon as they can too. The label will probably want to milk this album during touring first maybe so might be little while. They said they left it to them to pick the singles too which maybe they shouldn't have TBH. Its funny they didn't do that but admitted to spending hours on transitioning fitting the right sounds/sfx and music in the album but not that.

Having Frankie as the 'comeback' single is easily going to compare it to Frontier Psychiatrist minus Dexter's DMC worthy scratching. The same kind of slapstick humour hip hop which is borderline cheesy/unbearable for me like the noisy eater track. out of the 2 frankie is the least annoying. The MF Doom and Favourite Things sample win me over and make it a bit classy. Besides these 2 songs that challenge me sometimes I like the rest of it.

Yeah some people they used you can hardly recognise there contribution like Kevin's drums you'd think it was a sample and apparently colours no samples were used?? They've obviously added six to it and manipulated it too sound lo-fi so it fits in. We know Jonathan Donahue is a gun with instruments etc. learning that from mercury rev and what he's done with the Chemical Brothers in the past.

Thanks! I wanted to give it some time and have another listen while working or something. Its funny how someone like BBC Radio 1 allowed them to play another mix like that. They're not exactly bangers anywhere in this one and its quite slow moving and pretty chill. The hype of them coming back must've outweighed whatever they played that was popular radio friendly.

So this is one of the tracks that didn't make Wildflower but will hopefully make an appearance in other release they do with all the other tracks that didn't fit in with Wildflower (according to them):

Some more insight into the creators of the Was and how they worked on visuals for many other songs that didn't make the album like one called Blueberry Sky...

Can you tell us about making it? It must have taken so long!

It was an on-and-off labour of love over about five years, gradually building the narrative and visuals as The Avalanches dropped us new tracks. We're based in New York and Robbie, Tony and Chris are in Melbourne, so most of the collaboration took the form of an unwieldy online correspondence. It was a really loose process, with things being reworked whenever tracks were remixed or cut from the album. So there's this whole parallel universe of material that never made it in, like a stoner scene from the film Friday that accompanied this dreamy psychedelic track Blueberry Sky. Throughout the project we also did a couple of insane postproduction boot-camps in Berlin with our great mate Sam Smith, where the three of us would spend months living together inside a deep rotoscoping k-hole.

I'm a fan of Blood Orange so this made it even better. I can imagine hearing the album it would fit nicely in the soundscape. Love the concept and all of us have said even on this forum how music has saved us and been there in the right times in when you need it most.

Concerned they got eclipsed by Tame Impala being released recently not sure was good timing. But I can't complain. More new music I've been eagerly waiting for. When it rains it pours etc.

That definitely sounds like the SSU/Studio K sound. Is it a chems sound or is it from older material?

Good jam by the way! Hope this means a new album!

Not sure. But I do remember on The Avalanches instagram/facebook story they shared a while back they were playing The Sunshine Underground as one of their favourite tracks.

A new album is on the way!

and another song released at same time, another moody slow burner (I've heard these vocals somewhere else too):

Took a couple of listens for me to get into it but I like it now. its probably more the earlier raw production values of the avalanches showing in this mix. Not sure if anyone outside OZ has heard of the DMAs? I think they supported Liam Gallagher and he was really into them. They started getting into the whole manchester scene as well:

Haven't heard of them myself, can't say it seems like my thing. I do like the production style on this though, and agree it's closer to the early stuff.

Took me a few listens to get into the latest "Wherever You Go" single but it's growing on me! The NASA orchestra video is very cool!

Me again, the album's out if anyones interested. This Sunshine Underground sound bite appears throughout the album and particularly again in this track with Tricky where the whole thing is played (how theres a before and after effect of the whole sound when you hear it in TSU)

Will probably do this, too. 4 years ago The Avalanches canceled on the day of the show at 2017 Pitchfork Music festival, so this is a long awaited make up.

Can we also take time to acknowledge Biz Markie's passing? I know this is not the best thread to do so, but The Avalanches did work with him. RIP Biz

Probably should be noted, again, that MF Doom's death was announced early this year, too. The Avalanches have low-key curse going on. Danny Brown, be careful out there!

nah, dangit. Can't say I'm surprised, though. Metro was too small of venue for this.

I'll probably be able to find one closer to date. I'm not in the right state of mind to purchase stuff that far in advance (that is unless it's the Chemical Brothers).

The new albulm is one of my favorite albums of the past few years, not just from a sound standpoint, which is certainly is, but also from a visual design and packaging standpoint.   So beautiful and creative in many ways.

One of the very first CDs I ever bought was in 1991 from his brother...The Diamond Shell.    In my entire life, I have never actually met anybody who knew what the fuck I was talking about when I mentioned that CD.  They always know Biz Markie though.

For those who didn't see it, it really was very good. I mean that in the visual sense more than musically. About 130 films and tv shows edited together to create a 13 minute music video. Read more about it HERE. (http://www.avclub.com/article/characters-all-walks-popular-culture-mingle-freely-239224)

I just watched this for the first time. And normally I would probably give up on such a long video, but this was so captivating (especially for those who like media/film).

So we found out they canceled the tour "due to serious illness" 20 minutes after posted to social media when over halfway from Cincinnati to Chicago.  I spent the weekend really bummed about it and went on a bender Saturday that resulted in me being too wasted for Wrigleyville (seriously).  Totally gutted, but I just hope they're okay (they responded to Santigold's tweet about the hardships, stresses, etc. of touring right now and Robbie has talked about alcoholism and auto immune issues in an interview with NYT when We Will Always Love You came out).  I at least feel lucky I got to see them do a fucking banging dj set before Chems.

They've left Chicago high and dry twice now. We had a last second cancelation in 2017 at Pitchfork (their only Chicago date that year) and a reschedule and cancellation this year just hours before the show. I don't blame them obviously, but that's some bad juju.

Hope you got out and enjoyed the city, Born In Planet Dust.

that really sucks to go out of your way like that only to be disappointed, sorry Born.

that said... who had a chance to catch them at a live set this tour? I'm interested in hearing how it was for others.

I saw them at Portola and it was not what I expected. it wasn't billed as a DJ set, but I wonder if that's what I saw - I'm not sure what would distinguish that from a DJ set. and it just felt kinda like generic dance music to me.
Title: Re: Can we believe it? The Avalanches...

I purposely passed on seeing them at Portola because I was seeing them in Minneapolis the following Friday. This was a long time coming for me to see them live. Missed out on anything of a tour for Since I Left You. Either they didn't come to my market or I missed it completely.

The live show was not what I expected either. There were certainly fans at the show that were way into it. I was about 75% feeling it and the rest I just let myself go and have a good time.

I don't think I would make an effort to see them live again. Either I had the wrong expectation or there was not enough variety in their set list to encompass all 3 albums. Actually, provably both.

Happy I got to see them though.

We got a literal "DJ set" at The 1stBank show. Some questioned if it was legit or pre-recored DJ set, but either way the selection was pretty good and chest-rattling loud.

From what I've gathered their live (DJ?) show they've been touring this year is pre-recored. They probably cant afford to tour with live vocalists/special guests to make it more of a "Live" setting like they did in 2017. Which I find understandable.

I'm willing to support them though, even with pre-recored nonsense. They're really talented in studio and hanging with the right artists for collaborations. Not exactly an easy road for sample-based producers.

glad I'm not the only one. it could be our expectations, for sure. the wrong expectations can ruin an experience. and I get the expense part too, I don't expect them to bankrupt themselves to entertain me. I just remember hearing legendary stories of their live sets back in the day. things change over time though, including band members. (I re-visited some recordings of DJ sets from Dexter not long ago, and they are still cool as fuck.)

agreeing with both mesamm99 and bosco - glad I got to see them, would probably not go out of my way again, but happy to support them in continuing to do what they do. their studio work continues to hold up.
