The Chems just announced the release for the Record Store Day ;)

What do you think? EBW13, Special EP, or another Single from No Geography
(I'll choose Eve of Destruction/Eve of Dubstruction with that beta of the track mix.)
Looks like they'll be a new Chemicals record put out for Record Store Day in June 2021 (first drop Saturday 12th June).
Not sure what though, it's TBC in the list (https://recordstoreday.co.uk/releases/RSD-2021-Drop-1).
Anyone care to speculate?
I suspect it'll likely a remix of something like last year's offerings, but I'm really hoping it's Don't Think seeing as it's not been previously released on vinyl.
If the listed label on the RSD website is any indicator, it's 'This is Not a Game' from the Hunger Games soundtrack. Imperial/Republic are both offshoots of Universal, I think...
https://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Hunger-Games-Mockingjay-Part-1-Original-Motion-Picture-Soundtrack/master/760924
I wouldn't be surprised if it was any of their backstock from the last releases. Maybe the Avalanche remix or GTKO. Would be cool if it's something we haven't heard before, but Im thinking its something maybe related to an anniversary.
Avalanches was 2020, no?
I'm seeing EMI in the listing Here (https://recordstoreday.co.uk/releases/rsd-2021-drop-1/chemical-brothers-the/). Am I missing something re Imperial/Republic?
Link?
EDIT: I'm gonna guess at
1) Eve of Dubstruction/Destruction 12" single, or
2) Loops of Fury reissue.
EDIT 2: What would I actually like?

Upon further review, Universal has control over a fuckton of music labels. The Republic label coincidence might be a stretch.
Are all participating stores going to get at least one copy or how does this actually work?
Eve of Destruction / Dubstruction 12" would be nice!
Been a while since NG was released though. I'm hopeful for another stand-alone single like CHEMICAL, but that might be wishful thinking
It's limited to 1500 copys. No idea how many stores are doing the RSD, but it's a world wide thing so probably not every store will have a copy.

That's going to be gone so fast.
Just spoke to the manager of my local record store. Because it is a Universal offshot, there is a high likely hood that he would be able to order it in. Likely means good news for a more global release. Thee 1500 limit though is it a bit concerning.
Any one remember the #'s for the avalanches remix 7" or C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L. #'s might not mean much as I somehow found three copies of C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L at a shop in New Zealand few years back.
One can only assume it's going to be a brand new track as it is EMBARGOED until release, we surely would have known what the release is if it was a reissue/remix/etc(?)
Limited to 1500 copies, it maybe somewhat easier to get hold of one; last year's AVALANCHES remixed 12" was limited to only 600 copies.
Though, due to COVID and extremely limited flights between counties, Oceania counties will have very minimal, if any stock to sell (US & Europe generally have the lions share of stock levels).
Here's hoping all collectors and fans can get hold of a copy and not having to resort to DISCOGS and inflated costs. 🤞🏼

QuoteGreetings chemical brothers, sisters & siblings,
We have big news from Chemical HQ and we wanted to make sure that you were the first to know.
"The Darkness That You Fear" is the brand new single from The Chemical Brothers, out this Friday April 23rd!
Will this be the new record pressed for RSD then?

Yes! https://umusic.digital/udbtqf/?sharetoken=
The title was revealed on the Dutch RSD site in addition to SACEM as revealed on another thread
I think what Axent meant was: if it's out this Friday, how is it also the RSD release?
Must be a digital release ths week, and then a vinyl pressing for RSD.
Would have been more exciting if they had made it new music for RSD. But if it's out this Friday I'm not gonna defer listening to it until June...
Quote from: Wolkenkrabber on Apr 19, 2021, 18:54I think what Axent meant was: if it's out this Friday, how is it also the RSD release?
Thanks, that's exactly what I was trying to say.
Something to look forward to this week!
I wonder if this is already the first harbinger of Chem 10 or a one-off like C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L.
Perhaps RSD will have a single edit on one side and EBW version on the other. That way you, RSD will include something special/exclusive.
...until the Japanese edition of the new album comes and the bonus track is "The Darkness That You Fear (Electronic Battle Weapon Version)"
Though the 1 minute clip doesn't give me an EBW vibe. EBWs are always more clubby, dance tracks. I don't get that from this tune.
🤷♂️
I'm digging the Solar Eclipse art! Come on Friday!

Yeah. I'd normally be all for holding out until the physical release but that's just too long.
Roll on Friday!
Love the artwork too. Something about it certainly feels like the beginning of a new release schedule of similar looking artwork. Chemical 10 seems like a real possibility this year!
Sounds a bit like Swoon 2.0 with Avalanches vibes
Maybe this has been mentioned in other articles that dropped today but I just read Rolling Stone (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/chemical-brothers-new-song-the-darkness-that-you-fear-video-1159828/):
Quote"The Darkness That You Fear," Chemical Brothers' first new song since their 2019 LP No Geography, will be released as a Record Store Day exclusive 12-inch single on June 12th. The single features artwork by the late abstract artist Sir Terry Frost.
"The Darkness That You Fear" also marks the Chemical Brothers' first release after recently aligning with Republic Records following their decades-long tenure at Virgin. Republic Records executive Glenn Mendlinger said in a statement: "'The Darkness You Fear' marks the return of the mighty Chemical Brothers. It is a classic Chemical Brothers opus that is psychedelic, lush, and full of optimism. Tom and Ed once again prove they are pioneers of the genre with this uplifting track that is perfectly timed as the world comes out of darkness into light and color."
So that kinda solves mystery behind the Republic label on US RSD website.
RSD UK website (not just the Dutch one) now has a blurb for The Darkness That You Fear. Here. (https://recordstoreday.co.uk/releases/rsd-2021-drop-1/chemical-brothers-the/)
Re the B-side they say "alongside a B side which is as yet unreleased."
I'm tempted to think it's not a remix or instrumental, but something new.

How dare they commission a remix and not put it on the B-side?!
Well the new track doesn't look like it will be Here Come The Papal Disco Drums. But still...new track!
It's not Chemistry but it is Physics. Will it be as good as Marie Davidson's "Work It"? I wonder if it will have any audiobook-style science-y samples, like something sampled from this, for example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNk2mUbnKus
Neither google nor twitter seems to offer anything at the moment, if you search the title + Chemical Brothers. So we'll have to wait and see...(much excite!)
*EDIT* for those paying attention to the Chem's Instagram, they wrote #WorkEnergyPrinciple in this post yesterday. https://www.instagram.com/p/CPyM2iynjhh/
Also it seems the delay for the second drop mentioned previously on this thread is for Australia, due to shipping issues.
Holy shit. This is amazing news. I was already hyped to stroll down to my local record store on Saturday but a legit b-side is insanely exciting. What a freakin' treat.
"Work Energy Principle" does seem like it could share a vibe with the Galileo world. But at this point I just don't see that exceptional slice of musical magic to ever see the light, sadly.
Ok, so even though record stores in my city are going to participate in RSD, they apparently won't get TDTYF... that's a real bummer.
Hopefully Work Energy Principle will be on the album... or it'll end up as a Japan bonus track,
Well I just confirmed with my local that they will have the 12" in stock. They'll also have the Tomb Raider soundtrack making it a double chems day hopefully.
Bring on the B-Side...still looking for that Salmon Dance 7" with Snooprah...

Imagine having a subjective opinion on music!
Next thing you know, we'll be subjectively ranking the Chems albums in order of personal preference!
Maybe, once it's out, we could have a new poll. Do you prefer the A-side or the B-side?
For me, the A-side = kids birthday party. The B-side = underground night club or a headphone odyssey.

I agree with you on the b-side but would stop heavily short of calling the A side a kids' birthday party song. Imo A side is a/ structured like a song, b-side is a true club track, more like an EBW (like you wanted ;) ).
I love you guys. Don't ever change.

It's for US too
I'm still waiting on confirmation whether the record store I'm planning on going to, received any copies of TDTYF. On their twitter feed, they posted a couple of photos of their impressive bounty they'll have available for RSD. Unfortunately, I couldn't visually spot Chems. Here's hoping there's one in the drop waiting for me tomorrow morning...
A nearby record store is doing a wish list! It's a first come first serve where you can visit their website and selecting your wishlist items for record store day by clicking on the item. Then on the morning of RSD, you'll get an email and see if your items are pulled, and then you can come and pickup your goodies at the store with your email confirmation.
It's a first of it's kind l, but it's better then standing in line.
Good luck to all who get an early copy!
I hope, that we'll get the digital release, or at least someone will share the rip :')

RSD exclusives:
The Darkness That You Fear (obviously)
Other purchases:
The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned
The Chemical Brothers - No Geography
Kraftwerk - Tour de France
Pet Shop Boys - Actually (Further listening 1987-1988)
My local record store had three copies of TDTYF, so I'm quite pleased that I got one! :)
Got one too ! As well as a copy of C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L that the shop had left from 2017
Loving this. 8.46 long. Feels more like an EBW than EBW11 did for me.
The bit around 2.20 to 2.40 I think is "new" compared to what we heard in 2019.
I think there may be some additional Chemical FX sprinkled on the track compared to 2019. Or maybe I'm just listening harder.
Lost in music. :music

Finally some love for the AONO album, Imo the strongest poing of it is that it's different.
But daaamn, Action Radar, Girls, Memphis Bells, Hotride... Great tracks
Got my email this morning! In 4 short hours, I'll have my copy that's on hold! :)
Happy that you guys got your copies!

Yes definitely a new part added before the first break, and some FXs here and there. It's a beast of a track ! Reminds me of Clip Kiss and H.I.A.
Sadly, no etching :(

Always kinda bummed out that RSD is only for the Vinyl enthusiasts. I'd wait in line to get a single CD.

On hold!? Nice.
I'm currently in a line that snakes 3 sides around a 2 block rectangle. I'm down the road from the record store facing away from it! Actually getting kinda worried that I won't get a copy!
My neighborhood store that I've been digging at for over 20 years held a copy for me! Not sure how many that received, but there were no other copies at 9am (they opened at 8). Warpaint Weatherall mixes were gone (they only got 2 or 3 of those). I laughed when I saw Tomb Raider was over $50. Picked up Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin Companion, Toots - Funky Kingston, Incredible Bongo Band, & The Avalanches - SILY reissue on cd (2nd disc of bonus material - yay!).

Thinking of grabbing this too. The second disc is a mix on the CD right? I'd love a full unedited version of that delicious Leon Vynehall remix but I'm also interested to hear it in the context of a nice mix. It'd also be nice to have the original album on CD for the car (my og copy is back in the UK in my old bedroom :()
I canceled my RSD plans once I got word that TDTYF wasn't on the list for my record store. I was really bummed cause they seemed to get just about everything else.
That being said I snagged the last reasonably marked up listing up on eBay that I came across early this morning. So while I'm a bit miffed I won't be celebrating my score in the correct way, I'm happy I didn't have to get up early and drive a couple towns over to get to the place.
Nice gets guys!
@BornInPlanetDust, like your picks. Was intending to try and score Funky Kingston if I made the trip too. And jealous of Incredible Bongo Band!
What other releases did you all get? In addition to TDTYF I also got Fatboy Slim - Weapon Of Choice on Picture Disc, Crooked Machine, and those Location Sessions by Twenty One Pilots hehe
I really like it, it's like the more mellow version of EBW's.
Somehow reminds me of Das Spiegel's EBW brother

Great to read that the impressions of EWP :D
8:46 sounds great, the song during the DJ set in 2019 was 7:00, so there's even more!
Ha! Very true :-)
First time doing RSD. Took my 4 year old daughter and we made a morning of it. Got lucky and picked up TDTYF. We also got Air: People in the City, and Sublime meets Scientist & Mad Professor: Inna L.B.C.
Gladly picked up the one and only copy in the one and only RSD record store that was open this morning when I was out and about. The yellow edge of the cover immediately caught my eye between all the other ones and I knew it had to be it!! What a satisfying feeling to hold this pretty thing in hands. Good price also, I'm happy all around.
I'm listening to my digitized version right now (wink wink) and am loving what I hear. A great B side and a more than worthy EBW if it were one! A club banger for sure.
There are no etchings on the vinyl except for the usual "Mike at the Exchange" one.
Just got a 2nd copy on Amoeba's website. I don't think they are shipping internationally, but figured I would pass on the info.

Appreciate the heads up! I'm "in line" on their website now. No luck at my store and it seems nowhere else ordered any copies.
Edit: Not sure if I was looking in the wrong place, but I couldn't see it on there.
Bummer.
I have one last place to try then I think I'll call it.
Would love a copy of the rip if anyone would be so kind.
Dang, I bet it sold out.
I got order confirmation and everything...
I was also in line at exactly 10:00AM Pacific Time

Just got home as well.
Confirmed ahead of time via website with my local in Burnaby they'd have TDYF in stock. Got there 5 minutes to opening. I was approximately 20th in line. Most folks in line looked like punks, metalheads, or exactly like me (white males with at least one piece of denim on). Estimated my chances were okay. Half hour wait to get in as they were letting in 5 at a time (very small space). Guys behind me (standing WAYYYYYYY to close... two feet maybe...) talking about Rough Trade site keep giving "Gateway Errors" on check out.
Soon as I walk in owner and his wife ask "Are you looking for any specific release?". Tell them the TDYF and Tomb Raider. Point me directly to the electronic section for TDYF. One TDYF copy in section...SCORE! $25 price point, not great but expected. Tomb Raider? "on the far end of the front counter. Little bit pricey ($60). Likely cause of the licensing", also expected. Also picked up Thundercat's "Drunk" 10" box set for $40. In and out in 5 minutes.
I may swing by the other shop in downtown today to see if they have a copy as well.
Been texting actionjackson on walk home. Sounds like he scored as well.
Work Energy Principle is a banger :o

Didn't find much at the store RSD wise! Was contemplating on purchasing the Avalanches recent release but still on the wall. Store was packed but didn't stay too long. Kind of went in and went out!
My impression of that b-side: reminds me of some BG music that they play on some televised talent show on the part where this guy gets his cats to speed walk on a highwire that's about 25 feet in the air! Crowd applauds!
or
It's a good opening dj club track right before the chems put out the heavy stuff during the set. Still getting my listens in!
Can confirm I got a copy as well! 1 of 2 copies sold before I could get down to the shop, but luckily my guy on the inside put the last one behind the counter for me. Still out and about, but reading first impressions of WEP is making me want to rush home!
Well done Gents!

I so badly wish I could have picked this up at record shop within reasonable distance like the rest of you. I haven't had a proper record store visit in 5+ years (if not longer). For whatever reason, The Chemical Brothers seem largely overlooked in my area, and today was a sad reminder of that.

Though we may not have ANYTHING like Gramaphone in Chicago, we've got 8 or 9 awesome indie record shops here in Cincinnati and I strategically live 2 blocks from the best one. :)
Mrs. Enjoyed is the hero of RSD. She ordered one online from a store that was definitely not within walking distance from where I was, once I told her they were out at the place I queued for. I had to wait in line again just to pick it up, but I have it in hand!
Big big congrats and celebrations all round.

Home and listening (loud!) now. WOW! Its not my fav style if Chems b-side generally, but I know that WEP is one I'll come back to and keep finding more and more to appreciate. Reminds me a little bit of Swiper or Clip Kiss, kind of club tunes where you wonder why they didn't end up as EBWs like Acid Children or EBW9.
TDTYF is even better on vinyl. I'm not usually picky about streaming vs vinyl etc as long as I get to hear the songs, but there is definitely something about playing a Chems record for the first time properly

And was able to buy Warpaint with pickup from one of the other local shops. RSD 100% success.
So we (still) have 41 on sale on Discogs, numerous fanboys standing in line to obtain a copy, including toxic and me at 6:30 am, that record store had a dozen in stock, multiple no deals because no stock and it should be limited to 1500 copies? I don't believe it unless the record is actually numbered.

I don't have concerns of this release being limited. But if you're criticizing that this was poorly distributed? I agree.
I try to keep in mind, the concept of RSD isn't perfect. Post RSD market shows that there's a healthy amount of copies available on the secondary market. Some are sellers who are trying to squeeze a few dollars, and quite a few who just simply got way too many copies and are priced to sell ASAP.

Wondering why couple of copys are so much cheaper on discogs compared to what i paid at the record store. The cheapest i found there is less than 10£, i paid more than double the price.
^It would be fun to pick the brain of a RSD representative and or a record store dealer that participates in the program.
Loving the record. Really digging WEP! Would love to jump in a time machine and get this on a proper CD release. Bring back the art of the CD single!
To state the obvious, TDTYF and WEP are miles (or kilometers, to metric-ize the expression) apart in style. In my opinion, I think HAAi Remix is more worthy of side B to this release.
I also would add that I think WEP is a stinker. Appreciate the attempt and sharing another B-side, but this one definitely not one for me to love.

Yeah, it's an okay b-side. It just never peaks. Feels like it is building up to something that never happens. It just stays the same throughout.

What an extremely ungenerous comment this is (as someone once said to me!).
Although I would of course defend your right to express it.
I see someone has set up the A-side v B-side poll on the TDTYF thread, but so far no one has voted. They certainly are very dfferent tracks, so it is admittedly a bit like comparing apples and oranges.
I wonder if it would make more sense to put the poll on this thread considering it's the RSD release that contains both tracks rather than the original digital release.
Quote from: Bosco on Jun 14, 2021, 15:06

I know that the shops can't return RSD stock. So I guess that means they have to think carefully about what to get in. But how much mark-up they make, I don't know.
Work Energy Principle abbreviated as WEP
And it is reminiscent of an EBW
So it is a wep fo sho
Work Energy Principle is unhinged and fun
I find both tracks to be just okay. I don't hate them, but I'm also not jumping out of my seat over them. TDTYF is definitely Apple Air Pods commercial material. WEP needs to build up to something glorious or go the opposite route and have the psychedelic atmosphere amped up. But I've had tracks where as a single I wasn't a big fan of, but enjoyed it more within an album context.

LOL, well I appreciate you protecting my freedom to opinion even though we are on opposing sides on this one.
If Uncle Eddy wants to rain down on me like he did you, it's best he knows that I have purchased multiple copies of TDTYF. That's gotta equate to a couple e-cig cartridges, so vapes on me, Ed!
Furthermore, I absolutely love TDTYF. That song is a little piece of heaven for me. I would gush further, but as we see there is a lot of opposing opinions on the forum and you guys don't want to hear that shit. Plus, our forum Mommy (Whirlygirl) hasn't been present for some time to embrace my feelings and make me feel special for sharing such things. So I'm gonna be a big boy and suppress my sentiments.
Just found 9 copies for 17 dollars on discogs. Record stores still putting out their extra unsold copies online after a few days.
I have around 6 record stores near me within a 10 mile radius . Out of all of them, 2 only participated in RSD. The reason IMO why I think those record stores didn't do RSD is maybe because they're much smaller record stores (and depend on selling only used records as their main life support.) and because maybe they don't do enough business to buy commercially-pushed RSD releases and sell them without making a dime off them.
WEP! Like Joslyn said earlier, Its EBW-ish! I kind of thought the ending was gonna segue into another track....or was it suppose to?
So Im playing it in my living room and I close my eyes and imagine people around me getting their drinks and dance on. I turn on my ceiling fan (cause its damn hot today) and picture seeing T and E just casually rocking CDJ's and seeing the crowd just enjoying themselves. Its laidback but sort of a warm up track like I said before.
Its on Vimeo btw
For me, the Winner is "The Darkness...", Such a uplifting and positive packed anti-depressive track ❤️
But daaamn, I really like the Work Energy Principle, it has something, that reminds me of We Are The Night era tracks
WEP sounds like parts of No Need
I love both tracks. And I totally agree on the EBW vibe of WEP
Work Energy principle is pretty cool. Do you guys anticipate this will remain vinyl only or you think it will be released digitally?
I don't think this was covered but maybe I missed it.
I don't anticipate it going any further than RSD Vinyl release. I think it's no more than an exclusive B-side. And while it could be argued that it has potential to be an EBW, I think it would be announced as such already, if that was the plan.
Will it be released digitally? I think this is their way of making the limited RSD release special, so no.

Yo, Remwmber, that they dropped WEP in their 2019 Essential mix, just like they do with... EBW?
So... Work Energy Principle may in fact be the EBW13, as the Bros stepped back from the usual EBW releases!

I agree. I think EBW releases might be a thing of the past, sadly, but I hope not. EBW11 was just an album track so how is that really an EBW? FY/MAH could have been a proper EBW but wasn't (EBW
version). TDTYF also could have been a EBW release and could have dropped on June 1 like the others.
