Title: Got To Keep On
Post by: Ben_j on Aug 06, 2017, 21:29
This marvelous track deserves its own topic! Especially to the light of this new video rip :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry6751jNWFU
(At 36:11)

There are a lots of changes compared to the version they played in Lyon a month ago. The bassline at the beginning is much less funky and more electronic.
The disco/funky break at the middle is gone, replaced by something more in tune with the rest of the track, but with the same vocal sample (39:20). I prefer the old version overall, but some of the bits changed in this are better (the big buildup at 40:10 for example)

Here's a bit of the track as played in Lyon (at 3:59)

i prefer the older one because of its soundstage that im hearing. Very booming! The only difference i hear from my end is the disco/funky break that you mentioned.

its a minor change from my end but I hope they dont give it the 'superflash' treatment!

Maybe the disco break is still here, when the video cuts, and they added the other break ? That would be nice !

Very catchy. And i've probably said it before, I'm happy they've done another old disco tribute in their own way like Got Glint. And like a good disco song does, you leave all your troubles at the door and just enjoy it.

Its cool they've got that (once was) an underground dance movement of voguing to this, suits it very well. The different visual styles of dancers and how they are faceless and some genderless make a nice point to it too.

I've said it before, as have others, and I'll say it again, as will others...

This track is beautiful and could very well be the new best thing ever.

Originally Free Yourself had me the most excited for the new record, but this track is just phenomenal. And those visuals are wonderful. And the bells are sublime. And the album is going to be amazing.

It is a pretty captivating visual. The interlude kinda has me confused though. Is it actually part of the track, or is it just something they add to the live track to make it more dynamic?

Either way, I'm interested to see what the final product sounds like.

Thé interlude is part of the track, it was in their DJ sets. Originally they had a much more funky/Disco break that I'm sad they ditched.

Oh yes, you did a free-standing 7.06 'cut' of this track by itself from Nuits Sonores. On there, the melodic bit that comes in around 3.34 is now gone. That's a real shame (could there have been some Tom voice in there?). The big build in the current version that follows the "rain comes down like tears" bit almost feels overcooked for me. Although I will admit that the Nuits Sonores version gets a bit boring towards the end, and I like the chimes that have been added since Nuits Sonores.

The "rain comes down like tears" vocal feels out of place with the rest of the song in my opinion. I wish it said something else more fitting with the rest of the track.

Here's a video of a vogue dance battle where some of the moves look similar. The song at the start has similar elements like Got to Keep On has too. Like the big clap/snare and the stabby bass line with a bit of attitude. This video isn't even that old compared to when the dance movement started.

If its released as a single, it would be a cool idea with if they something like they did with Galvanise on how they paid tribute to the krumping movement.

Have we addressed the lyrics that come in towards the end of the track - "Nothing can be..."
- before it starts transitioning into HBHG?

I thought it was just a sample initially but I'm pretty sure they are proper vocals. They follow the melody of the bassline very deliberately. And they sound kind of Aurora-ey...

Could this track actually have more vocals and we're just being treated to the stripped down live/instrumental version? It's pretty typical of how they like to play some of their tracks.

Thoughts?

You can hear those vox as early as 1.37 in the Rock In Rio, Lisboa clip at the top of this page.
I kinda addressed them in the 2nd line of my post HERE. (https://forum.thechembase.com/index.php/topic,1112.msg13507.html#msg13507) I was hoping someone would respond at the time but no one did.

I'm sticking to my theory that these are session vocals (Replay Heaven?), and not those of Aurora. Also keep in mind we have heard the track in DJ Sets, not just the live version. I'd be surprised if they would play a "dub" mix of the track in their DJ sets. But of course this is all guesswork...
Title: Re: Got To Keep On
Post by: Enjoyed on Jul 06, 2018, 23:54
Wow. I'm sorry, I completely missed that.

Take your point about it being in DJ sets. Though that was a whiiiiiile ago, right? Possibly before they had Aurora come in and do proper vocals? I don't know. They definitely seem to fit much better than a random sample (original or Replay Heavened version) has any right to.

Ah but if Replay Heaven (or any other professional session vocal team) are asked to do something, they can surely do exactly what they are asked. Hence they can make their vox fit just as well as a guest vocalist could.

EDIT: Also (I now realise) you can hear the "nothing can be" vocal towards the end of THIS (https://www.instagram.com/p/BchqSsKF97z/) Warehouse Project clip from last December. We had heard Eve of Destruction in October (opening track, OGR Torino). And we know that EOD contains Aurora. So if she had done those vocals by then, she would have presumably done "full" Got To Keep On vox by then too, I imagine.

I better not keep arguing this point because if I'm wrong, imma look stoopid.

Still, I'd be cool to have a full vocal on top of that magic.

I feel like there might be something else with this song maybe we haven't heard, it sounds like its almost finished since we've heard the whole track from start to finish properly but only in a live environment.

It could still change again maybe going by what they do when test and play around with new tracks. Probably safe to say most of it is done since they are officially letting everyone know now that this is new music by performing it live. So maybe won't change dramatically if it does.

It was almost 6 min long at the rio show! Might as well count it as the full version. slightly curious on how they're gonna treat the radio version.

Yes! And by the way, it would be a better and stronger new release than SIFSD! but more importantly.....way too catchy, and I dont mean that in a bad way.

Just to add on my previous post, obviously if you really think about. the chems already finished the track, then gave it to adam smith (the visual wizard extraordinaire) to do the visualization with the dancers. then weeks later, some editing here and there and boom.......ready to be heard at the first show, which was last june. In other words, chems had this track done months ago imo

Unless there is a hidden vocal, I'm thinking it's not a single at all. I believe Enjoyed suggested it possibly being EBW 13 in another thread, and I kind of agree. It has dance floor flavor, but to me, it still feels too empty for it to be featured as a single, let alone the first single. I don't know, maybe the essence of this track is flying over my head.

On the other hand, it's my belief they are holding back with 'Eve of Destruction'. This would be my guess for the lead single, especially since it features a guest vocalist. From a marketing perspective this is the logical choice. Additionally, there seems to be a lot of investment that they had Aurora filmed for the actual live visual, (which ultimately might be part of later released music video).

"Got To Keep On" is finally shazamable too.
It's not named "Keep On" or anything else, the final title is "Got To Keep On", from what Shazam is telling me.
The album information on Shazam is not "No Geography", it states "Got To Keep On". It's probably gonna be released as a single as well. Let's wait and see... This is going to be exciting.  :D

It sounds the same tempo (just without all the live reverb and effects they use). But to me the beat sounds more flat compared to versions we've come across like when I heard Free Yourself as the studio version for the first time.

Yeah I thought Free Yourself studio version needs a little more edge as it feels too constrained/squeezed production-wise. It needs a little more fatness and sharpness.

I guess when you've already heard the track, you're hoping for something new or "extra" when it finally comes out. Not much new here, but nice to finally be able to hear it properly on headphones.

Must admit the cheering noises on both CHEMICAL and this track aren't really my cup of tea. I suppose they're used as a way of filling the space - a bit like say, the bongos in Go - but putting cheering on your own records feels a bit like self-praise to me. Am I being harsh?

Yes. Stupid question. Next.

Nah, but in all seriousness, there is something a little disappointing in hearing the exact same song as a studio version after hearing it live ahead of time. I remember when my buddy and I first sat and listened through Animal Collective's 'Merriweather Post Pavillion' after listening to bootlegs constantly and seeing them live a few times before the album. It was actually such a magical experience because SO much had changed for the record. Obviously it's slightly different as their live versions are never as fleshed out as on record, and couldn't ever be really, but you hope for some kind of change, even if it's nuanced or minor. I think you can appreciate a studio version in a different way if you've already heard the song. What production choices did they make in the end? What little sprinkles of magic did they dust over the top of what was already heard? It can be super satisfying to pick up on those the first time. I think...
I'm normally a hold-off-until-the-album kind of guy, but I want all of this so bad, I couldn't this time round.

I am going to wait until tomorrow though, because I decided to live somewhere where it's still Thursday, and I'm OK with that.

trust me when I say this. When you finally get to see the show, it wont matter anymore.

try not to think of it as spoiling it for yourself. when you hear it live, it will be worth it.

as for current and present listening, i change the eq and surround settings for my audio on my phone to give it a little more life to the song.

Knowing the difference between the BITE tracks and their live versions compared to what they're doing with NG, I'm kind of glad it's mostly the same this time around, granted I wish they'd throw in some surprises in the studio versions, but nothing drastic like in 2015.

The thing is, hadn't it been usually the other way around where you got the album, then single releases and then you went to concerts where those songs were adapted for the ultimate live performance? The brothers are famous for their way of notching up their album tracks live, adding more depth or nuances to them.

This is the thing though. Why did Justice go to all the effort of doing a studio version of WWW as a new album? Cause it was a reinterpretation of the latest music as well as the older stuff, and thats an exciting thing for a fan. I'm glad they did that because I wasn't 'satisfied' with the original album versions of the Woman songs. I just felt like they needed a little more.

It can be a battle with art v commerce too sometimes with deadlines in this fast paced world.

I hope they give this track the same treatment to MAH/ FY, meaning put out another single with GTKO (longer version hopefully with those missing parts I mentioned) and EOD on the other side!

Make this happen T and E!

Love, love, love this track.

At the Ally Pally this was the 'malteser catwalk' tune 8)

So woozy and psychedelic - and I love the random feedback/tears poetry build up right in the middle - so out of place, yet so right!

Smashing work T and E - high hopes for the album now!

Among the 3 tracks we have already heard from the upcoming No Geography album, Got To Keep On is not my favourite, but I understand its choice as the first single as it sounds more mainstream than Mad As Hell or Free Yourself.

No surprises, but I absolutely love this track!
The ending sounds abrupt, maybe a hint that the tracks on NG are mixed into each other more than on BITE? (I've had that feeling with FY and MAH as well)

What do you think, will there be a music video?

Finally found time to listen to this properly.

Holy. Fucking. Fuck.

This is up there. Like, Star Guitar up there. It's so beautiful, and headphones are giving me so many wonderful sprinkles of extra magic that make this studio version a massive pay off. The funk guitar takes me back to when I first fell in love with Galaxy Bounce. There's those arpeggiated synths in the outro that sneak in to put you over the edge. The bells. Even when they come in earlier than expected, are so triumphant and ethereal.

Honestly. So. So. SO excited for this album.

Holy crap! What a fantastic track! I'm still not into Free Yourself very much, but with this and MAH turning out to be SO DAMN GOOD...

SO PUMPED FOR THIS ALBUM!

Also, the cover is pretty damn funky. Really hope it's more representative of the albums cover than the last two singles cause I wasn't a huge fan of the 'giant white letters' look. Although I know that when the album is out I'll completely forget about it in two seconds :music

There's an arpeggiated melody on a square(ish) wave synth that plays for the penultimate 8 bars. I don't remember it from the live set, though it's been a hot minute since I've listened to it.

I'm dying to hear the "nothing can be" sample in it's original form. It has that ohoo-ohoo female part in it too. I actually was wondering whether the main oooaaaaooo harmonies were ALSO part of the same sample. We've got to find it.

I thought that might've been the part Stephanie Dosen contributed as 'background vocals' according to the credits revealed? I can't imagine it being anywhere else. Unless she has redone the vocals of this so called sample in question like the 'We've got Try' with Auroua as noted as a possibility from the 6music mix?

Sounds like her doesn't it?
Looking at the writing credits in Explud's reply #49, the writers credited are:
Peter Brown & Robert Rans (Dance With Me)
T&E
Rob McKuen (Rain/tears sample).
I imagine if they had either directly sampled, or recreated the "nothing can be" bit from somewhere/someone else, they would have given it a writers credit. Unless they're naughty?

So I noticed the chems were inspired by this experimental poem project in the 60s for this period of creation for this album which I suspect they got this tears/rain sample from. Apparently only the ones from the 60s are the ones from the original one, the rest outside that are from imitator ones that started up later:

Dial-A-Poem archives (http://www.ubu.com/sound/dial.html)

I noticed one called 'Geography' I wonder if this one will make an appearance on the album. Haven't heard all of them yet.

And more from John Giorno page (the founder):

http://www.ubu.com/sound/giorno.html

This was interesting too and I'd imagine partly the reason T&E were drawn to it as well. Great minds think alike:

Quote
From 1965 on, Giorno would explore tape and phonograph recording, along with colleagues William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin, using a variety of tape experiments such as loops and cut techniques [2] Giorno was introduced to Bob Moog, who was working on his Moog synthesizer, on the verge of its fame.

Slightly fatigued over here. I take breaks from the Rio set by listening to the rip off EOD! It helps balance things out!

Btw! I went for the audition for this video! After I made the cut for the final 20 dancers, Mr Gondry let me go because I wasn't 'sweating' enough!

It looks like they may swap each others clothes and who knows after that. I feel like Gondry is a good choice for this song. Thats what was missing with the GO video, you were waiting for some sort of 'twist' or climax but it never came because not much was happening. This one may build up to something.

The soul train thing is cool.

Bootleg bingeing! There's gotta be an AA meeting for this!

This track is getting big quickly. I really hope the hype doesn't carry on to some freaking car commercial, or a movie trailer, or worse, played on the Ellen show with the audience dancing.

I want this track to be sort of low key ( ha too late!) but then again not too much exposure where people are calling it 'commercially' popular.

Nah, there's a differene between a song designed to be commercially successful (i.e. like Swift, Perry, Amerian Idol etc. crap) and a song that becomes commercially successful because it's awesome. And if a chemical track gets wide exposure because it just feels right and makes the crowd move their lazy asses and pulling their wallets, so be it. Nothing wrong with that. :)

Better than Go. Free Yourself from Dom and Nic still the best film clip for this album so far though. Story wise and visually/technically.

The homage to Further visuals with the white blobs (taken from the green blobs from Another World) was a nice touch. Maybe the brief T&E are giving the directors is to pay tribute to the past visually in some form now that a little theme seems to be emerging?

I know it's not fair to compare this video with Go, but I can't help it! I love Gondry but had to put the Go video out of my mind because it felt like it ran out of steam before it even got enough steam to get up and Go. But that said, every director is entitled to the occasional miss from time to time and I'm glad to see the groove is back with Got To Keep On.

I love the dancers in Got To Keep On, and I like the informal 'audition' feel of the video. The blobby, milky twist when the dancers transform and merge is clever.

Tune still catchy as all get out.  :music

I... I don't get it...

Was the dancing in time for anyone else or was I just having trouble with YouTube?
The whole track is about rhythm, accents, those clap-snares, the bells. None of those cues were hit.
I did enjoy the gradual evolution, from dancing, to "hang on, something weird happened there", to "ohhhh, weirdness IS happening" but then a minute long breakdown in a song that's already been edited down to 3 minutes. I don't know. Obviously it was better than Go but it lacked the same connection to the music for me. Someone said it on Facebook, but man, the live visuals are just leagues ahead. They should have just released that.

I think if people feel that the video connects with the song more successfully in another example, then it's totally fair to compare. And the fact that the other video happens to be by the same director is even more reason to. Would it not be OK to eat a crappy (or not so good) burger and think "you know, this isn't as good as that burger I had from [insert delicious place*]"?

I'd love to say that all Chemical Brothers songs are equal, but there are definitely ones that are superior. Got To Keep On is one of them!  :P

I feel like the rain and tears part with the crowd breaks it up in a good way and adds a bit more depth and human emotion to the song and that theme probably plays well with the whole album. Its like an uplifting song but still acknowledging the world is fucked/life is hard basically. (for luck of a better description).

I noticed Gondry had a relative (brother?) help him do this video as well? Time restraints? The only really thing that bugged me with this video were the transitions into white blobs where you could tell it was done by computer. In a world where SFX are quite commonly used now we are all used to it being done quite well but this seemed bad and looked 'fake' and rough. Gondry has been known for creating good visual trickery without even having to rely on Computer SFX too much to get his tripped out effect, that or you don't realise how he did it because it fitted in well with the scene. Thats what the difference/issue was for me. Like he was losing his authenticity if makes sense?

I also think high expectations were expected because I like all 3 songs equally now i think after listening to them  for a while. (ignoring the bootleg binging for a moment to try and be fair)

Going back to the song. Just an observation of the tune (not the video) - particularly the "rain/tears" part, where really it starts to go all wonky from about 3:17 to 3:42.

It sounds like taking a hit off nitrous oxide. Laughing gas. The noise coming into your ears becomes centralized and feels a bit like it's richocheting in your head. And if you're listening through headphones, the feeling of that head trip is magnified. MAH has these types of bits sprinkled in that song as well.

Or is it just me? I mean, I could be way off mark. Or maybe it's triggering a memory.  It is the strangest thing. I haven't done whippets well in over a decade and my dentist doesn't administer nitrous when I'm getting my teeth worked on. Hahaha  :D

Anyway I'm being totally serious. It's tripping me out. And no I'm not high!

Olivier Gondry is his brother. It's not the first time they work together, he usually helps with visual effects, which are used in a lot of his videos, Star Guitar, amongst others.

Erol Alkan has a strange version of Got To Keep On in his new mix (thanks Chemicalmat for the spotting). It's labelled as "The Chemical Brothers - Fanta" (the tracklist timestamp is wrong), and it has the funky synth that was in the first version of GTKO that they ditched (the one heard in the Nuits Sonores DJ Set).

I'm guessing this is like Out Of Control/Enjoyed, where Fanta is a different track based on the same sounds as GTKO. Or maybe it's the "instrumental" bonus version from the vinyl and japanese versions ?

The track starts around 40:00 https://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/metropolis/erol-alkan-mix
Title: Re: Got To Keep On
Post by: Wolkenkrabber on Feb 17, 2019, 14:45
Ah, so the mix actually starts with Erol's (excellent) Spectrum which is really 0.00 but listed on the tracklist as 1:03:00. Ok.
Then it just ends on 45 minutes and jumps to something new? The final three tracks after "Fanta" aren't included?

Anyway, yeah it's got that lovely "middle eight" melody (electric guitar-ish?) at 42.55-43.09 [EDIT: sometimes the seconds are slightly off and the mix ends with a time beyond the stated 45.02. So the bit I mention may be more like 43.11 - 43.25} which didn't make the final version. Hope that's in the extended version.

So, anyone done a rip of this track yet?

ps: Thanks ChemicalMat!

Fanta as in relation to the soft drink?

Anyway yeah, agree with Wolkenkrabber that melodic part has Chems signature on it.

I hate to be the one to say this... but that video was far better than the Gondry-directed video.

I mean, not that Gondry's video was bad--not at all.

It's just... god damn there was some necessary darkness in that that somehow fit.

I'll have to go see Climax now.

Ok. I don't want to be that guy, but is no one going to make a music video for this track that is actually edited in time? I don't get it. I feel like I could film myself dancing to the track in my bedroom and end up with something that fits better.
The Climax clips are better in terms of their mood, but damn, not a single one was slowed to get the dancing in time. Only occasionally did things sync up and it was seemingly by accident.
I wish I had time to do something myself. This track deserves synchronised rhythmic editing.

They didn't? Hm. That's a squandered opportunity, because from the few seconds of clips I heard so far, you'd think this would be a no brainer. I love the way Adam and Marcus coreographed the live visuals, especially the two pyramid shaped dancers who spin their head to one side to the beat.
Title: Re: Got To Keep On
Post by: Enjoyed on Mar 01, 2019, 17:34
Exactly. The live visuals work perfectly, because they are built to the rhythm and movement of the track.

The Gondry video and the Climax edit do not. The Gondry video has the dancing in time, but just misses out on key accents and moment. In my opinion at least.

Ah, the Chems YouTube upload is working for me:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xf75NbvifGo

Remember when you would buy a maxi CD single which had six or seven different remixes on it? This feels like it would be somewhere in the middle of a bunch of those mixes. It's not an improvement on the original, but it's not bad. Vocals chopped down a bit, rhythmic stabby bits pushed to the fore. Professional sounding, and good for a couple of listens. Then you probably forget about it.

ps ChemBase team, this particular shade of blue in the vid (also used for the Riton remix) seems to appear when we change pages on the forum. I assume that's deliberate?

pps: oh Action Jackson has edited his post above so now I'm not first to post it...

yes - and if I can optimize the pageload times on the background image a little better, it shouldn't happen, it's the backup background while the image loads (or fails to load)

Agreed. I don't think it brings enough to the table, or gets away from the original enough to make me want to go back and give it more than a another listen or two. At least with the Paranoid London mix of FY, while not really my bag either, it gave the song a whole new feel. Frankly not excited by this Midland mix.

I love the live segue into HBHG so much (as heard e.g. in the Ippodromo live set (https://youtu.be/UhacoAYPMc8?t=376)) and whished they had used that subtle tremolo/ vibrato filtered synth on the album version's outro too. I had to do it myself.

It's called "Block9 Acid Mix". It's almost certainly a bootleg he played out at Block9 at Glastonbury (one of the many, many, wonderful bespoke club venues in the SE corner).
It does get a little repetitive but it's a nice little take on what is already one of the best songs of the year. Impressive that something as simple as an acid line can be added successfully to it, in that sense.

May be some fluctuating levels and distortion on the bass in some sections. First effort in making a long mix. Very new to all this so I'm sure it's rough, but enthusiastically put together. Comments and advice welcome!
