I'm convinced.

Glenn Mendlinger follows, and is also somebody of high interest to Chems.

Next question is if Desert Daze is on their radar.

Hell yeah! Definitely going! Not sure if any L.A. date?

Btw, back in April, someone here already called it before this announcement.

that intial rumor implied this was being planned the same weekend as CRSSD in San Diego. if so then I expect a lot of crossover.

Was it Goldenvoice that put on the solo Chems show along with their CA festival appearance last time?

I'm down for Four Tet + Floating Points, but I'd much rather sink 100 into a solo Chems show than 200 freakin' boneyos on a single day festival. Just wondering if we think it'd be worth waiting...

Also. Am I the idiot? Or is this some weird ass dimension where Flume is listed higher than The Avalanches?

Yes, both Shrine and The Greek Theatre shows were produced by Goldenvoice. Hard Music Festival in 2015, I don't think that was Goldenvoice, but I'm not totally sure who has, or had, control of that fest.

I feel ya, but Flume sub-headlined behind Billie Eilish at Saturday of Coachella this year. Meanwhile, The Avalanches were buried into the 5th line of the lineup of Friday at Coachella. So this isn't totally new news for Goldenvoice.

Excellent question, and a soul draining one for those who don't have the benefit of living on either of the main major coastal cities in North America.

If I were to guess, this trip is a short one. There's no indication of any new releases in the near future so it's kinda hard to believe they will take the time to tour without a new album. Maybe a Mexican date to makeup for festival cancelation in 2020? Or maybe some unannounced Southern Cal or East Coast festival that is also in late September/early October? I suppose a unique amphitheater could be in the cards too.

And we're off. Tickets purchased.

One thing--Fuck AXS multiple service charges per ticket. Seriously, per ticket? Should be per order.

What's with the additional service charge on an additional ticket when it's the same transaction?

They charge you more for just buying an extra ticket? Damn bro! AXS gotta chill Yep! 27 bucks for the regular service charge. Fac fee is 4, whatever that means.

Scored one! Ready to dance with Dr awesome!

Now to find a hotel!

isn't this standard? every major ticket vendor has charged an outrageous per-ticket fee plus a nominal per-order fee for as long as I remember. it's one of my favorite things to complain about.
Title: Re: [new]2022/09/25 - Live at Portola Festival San Francisco
Post by: MadPooter on May 21, 2022, 19:11
Service fees are standard, sure. But it doesn't make sense for a service fee to be added on a per-ticket basis when there is only one transaction.

If I were to have bought 4 tickets I would be paying an extra $100, and arguably there was no change in the amount of processing or handling on AXS's side.

It's just dishonest--it's ripping people off in a minor way, and no one can do much about it.

Grinds my gears I tell ya.

you're yet. yet the per-ticket service fee has been normal for as long as I can remember here in USA. worse yet, they are getting to be a larger % of the face value over time.

Mr. Stash and our offspring Connor will also be in attendance. 😆

Hey we could do Smugglers cove again for Ryno's pre-bday bash perhaps! .

Whirls! Maybe I forget but why did you have to leave early from the SF show?

Very excited to see all of you again very soon. And for you new faces that I haven't seen yet, I'm looking forward to new conversations and geeking out everything chems related and much more.

I am so freaking excited! We are headed to San Francisco the Friday evening before the festival. I am not sure what our schedules are going to look like or if we will be able to squeeze in a visit to get some tiki umbrella drinks. But meeting inside the festival is a must!

The timing of the last San Francisco show was all wrong for me. It was my fault as I overcommitted in the first place. When I booked my time for San Francisco, I had forgotten about a family milestone event I RSVP'd to earlier which was for the Sunday morning after the show. Anyway, we had a flight out the next morning at a reasonable hour. We'd be tired from the festivities, but it was doable. Fast forward to the day... Aside from my life kind of being a mess at the time, not 5 minutes into the show and we got a message that our flight was cancelled and we were scheduled for another flight that directed us to Seattle, then back to Los Angeles where we'd be touching down *after* the family event 🤦‍♀️ We had to make some calls and reschedule. That really did us in. The folks at the door graciously let us out and re-enter but we had lost a good 15 - 20 minutes of the show. Once back in, we had lost our seats and had to relocate further up. I couldnt even see my forum people out on the floor. :( My husband was having a hard time with the crowding and the gargantuan cloudbursts of San Francisco's finest herbal blends, and we now had a much earlier flight we had to catch that we were stressing over. It was just sad. We left shortly after Golden Path. So that's my sad story. The end, lol!!

I hope to make it up and get a chance to properly enjoy a Chems SF show this time!! And I can't wait to see some familiar faces and meet new ones too. ❤️

Funny part is, I haven't drank in almost a year and a half (Feb 2021). But I'm not averse to returning to Smugglers. Can we let errol know ahead of time that we going to hopefully put a bug in the ears of certain people....

Damn! I didn't know you guys went through all that crap, especially the return flight. I would've had an anxiety attack if it ever came down to that.

We have a hotel on the edge of China Town and North Beach - it's about a 15 minute drive from Pier 80.  We will be flying up Friday night beforehand.

I hope the place you found offers free parking!

Honestly, not entirely interested in the lineup beyond long established artists like Fatboy Slim, The Avalanches, Caribou, and DJ Shadow.

Can't argue with the names you've picked out.
I caught Bicep live at an outdoor thing at the end of May. They hit harder live than I expected. And the crowd "hit" hard too. I was exhausted afterwards.

I'm looking forward to Bicep too, I hear good things.

the bigger names are less of a draw for me, funnily enough. there's some very good acts on there and I'll thoroughly enjoy them when the weekend comes, but I've been lucky enough to see a lot of them before and (aside from the Chems) I'm mostly looking forward to the acts I haven't seen yet.

Yes! They came out to LA back in March, but not sure if I'll check them in SF. Besides there gonna be playing a week prior to that show at Primavera Sound festival with NIN and Khruangbin! Good bang for the buck.

For me they're sort of a guilty pleasure. They did an Essential Mix for the BBC last year. And as Pete Tong says in the intro, they're from Leeds.

Genuinely jealous for those going to Portola. Goldenvoice festivals can be held to to a high standard, this should be a great weekend and hope it's a great time for all.

Any double dippers here, meaning coming from the Denver show to SF?

20 days away!

I'm gonna land near union square which is perfect because there's like a bunch of record stores nearby ( one of them specializes in electronic), so hopefully some rare Chemical bros records will be found.

I got a Boudin's just 2 blocks from my hotel. Most likely to hit up that place after I check in.

And Buena Vista is just 8 min away!

Bosco's my new voice assistant! ;D

Chinatown fun to walk through too, though I don't have any reliable recommendations.

If you trek down to wharf for Buena Vista, you should opt for Boudin factory over the cafes they have around city. Lombard St (the crooked street), is in the area, although a bit of a steep climb out of Wharf.

Bunch of neat things for a tourist to experience in the area. Just has gotten too expensive.

Hey Compadre! Definitely looking forward to seeing you and the rest at the meetup once again!

Talk about a 'before and after' time differencial! Last time we met we were in a pre-covid era, and now it's like 'what in the hell just happened?'

Plenty of stories I'm sure. I hope everyone is doing okay btw.

One of my favorite non-contact sports is driving in San Francisco. ;)

Thankfully I managed to never get into an accident in the 16 years I lived there. But admittedly the hills are a little tricky.

Fun fact--my transmission on my old Honda gave out on one of the hills in SF. Thankfully tow trucks do their thing.

sooo, Chems are playing 8.40 - 10 pm. there's extra time after so let the vain hopes for an encore begin!

sunset will be about 7 pm that day so should be dark enough. glad it's not going late, although I will inevitably wander over to Four Tet/Floating Points after and ride that out through the end.

now to pour over the rest of the schedule...

According to the official Portola app, Chemical Brothers play 8:40-10:10PM. The graphic is misleading and makes it look 8:40-10PM.

Hoping they can tag on an encore for everyone, especially considering the ticket cost. I'm not sure if they're closing main stage earlier for crowd control or some kind of outdoor sound ordinance they have to abide by. Could be both.

where do you see this info? I wish goldenvoice would be more forthcoming about dropouts. as long as I have been attending their events, unless it is a headliner, any cancellations are just quietly swept under the carpet as if nobody will notice.

On twitter. They've moved Toro Y Moi from the Ship Tent headline slot to MIA's spot (Pier). And they've added Oneohtrixpointnever to the empty slot in the Ship Tent.
MIA has gone...MIA due to an "unexpected health matter" according to SFgate (https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/mia-cancels-portola-fest-performance-17452941.php).

https://twitter.com/PortolaFestival/status/1572640711480324096

Incidentally I went to two festivals in London this summer. For Field Day I had to download the app in order to show a digital ticket on my phone (if you don't have a smart phone it could be very difficult to gain entry these days!). And for Wide Awake festival I found the app useful as you could select your favourites and plot out your day on a personalised timetable. Also the app let us know of some last minute changes on the day. Looks like Portola has an app too.

If I were going to this festival I would probably want to see:
SATURDAY
Romy (of The XX) 3pm
TSHA 4.45pm.  Rarely wears a bra. She likes to bounce up and down during her DJ sets, and so do her boobs.
The Avalanches 4:55pm
Jungle 6pm
Caribou 7:15pm.  I caught him/them in May at Wide Awake, the third or fourth time I had seen Caribou at a festival. Always fun.
Jamie XX, 8pm. Another member of the XX! All that's missing is Ollie.
Fatboy Slim at 8:30
Bicep Live at 9:45. Caught them live at Wide Awake fest back in May. Surprisingly banging. The beats rose above 130 BPM when they played Boss Rhythm.

SUNDAY
Prospa 1:35
Haai 2:35
Sofia Kourtesis 3pm
Kelly Lee Owens 4:40pm
Keinemusik at 5:15 and/or DJ Shadow at 5:35
Blessed Madonna at 6:30pm
James Blake at 7:10pm
And things get complicated for the end of the night with:
Chems at 8:40 clashing with Ben Bohmer at 8:25, Four Tet & Floating Points at 9, and Oneohtrixpointnever at 9:30

Not a bad looking festival.

But also, her set was great. I hadn't been to much live music when I saw her supporting Bob Moses a few months ago, so I could have been swept up in just hearing LOUD music again, but I thoroughly enjoyed everything I heard. Went home and downloaded a bunch of her music and would also recommend!

so here's the lowdown.

portola is a mixed bag.

it's very much goldenvoice flexing. the production quality of the lineup, stages, tents, and sound is up to the standards I have come to expect from them. the screens at the pier stage are huge.

the space is cool. it's surrounded by cranes and a giant ship. they put astroturf (or something like it) down near stages so we're not standing on concrete the whole time.

it's over populated. (some were saying 30k people.) not enough food vendors for that many people, so long lines of hungry people. they manage flow of people in & out of the warehouse, crowd control around there is a fucking mess at times.

during the day there was a nice breeze and it was very comfortable. at night that same breeze made it a little chilly.

drink selection is so-so and overpriced. $14+ for a beer. sigh.

cell phones were pretty much useless after 3 pm. you'll get spotty text coverage. (timestamp your text messages, they will be delayed.) you'll get some data coverage in certain parts of the venue but don't rely on it.

myself I'm honestly on the fence about how to approach tomorrow. I could go early and enjoy the best part of the day (1-4 pm), and manage my way through the rest, knowing better what to expect. on the other hand I could skip the madness, roll in at 8 and go straight to the Pier stage and wait for the Chems.

some were saying that saturday sold out while sunday did not. so maybe it will not be as busy sunday?

my advice for anyone coming sunday:
- bring layers for the evening.
- arrange meetup time/places before going in.
- avoid the warehouse. if you do go in, plan extra time for getting inside, expect congestion.
- if you're planning to eat in the venue, do it early before peak times.

I'm already doing double time for enjoyed. I'll try to soften the blow and take your energy tomorrow. Currently using the Shrine 2019 recording to hype my energy levels.

My energy levels at this current time are, well, not in sync compared to the last shindig. I can feel it too. I know age got to me (no shit  :))) and amongst other things, plus I got another COVID booster around a week prior to the show and now I feel like I just came off a treadmill from 60 min of paced running.

Did some practice walking down and up some hills yesterday ( I'm in SF now btw) and yep, it's gonna be awhile before I get back to my normal energy levels back. I'm about maybe 75 percent right now but I'll see if SG and it's healing powers can restore my vitality.

In bed typing this, and I can't sleep because I'm beyond excited about later today. Got here in good time yesterday about 6 hr and 15 min drive. Played the new Beth Orton album, Chems Lowlands, StereoLab, etc while on the road.

Saw this while navigating in the afternoon.

Hi hi hi! Shakermaker gave a great rundown of the venue. Slick  Goldenvoice production, interesting location, and the crowds. From what I saw the merchandise line toward the back of the venue was bonkers, I did not wait and will try again today. Food lines were long so be prepared.

Those yesterday who were dressed like it was Coachella weekend appeared unprepared in the outerwear department. So folks, do as shakermaker says and bring layers because it gets chilly in a hurry once the sun starts to set!

I'll be heading in later during the day. So excited!! See you there 😆

Amazing show last night! So many unexpected goodies that happened with every song. They really did a wonderful job working through the entire set. Can't decide if the half before "hold tight SF" was better than the half after. Love how the music pulls me in deeper and deeper. I would have to say that it was the second best show of theirs I've seen. First was the first time I saw them in 99. I'm dancing away from this show feeling really fortunate that they are my favorite band.

Tons of unexpected surprises in this show. I love the new take on Setting Sun, to the new faster paced visuals of EML Ritual. There's just so many other songs in the setlist that in imo got remixed of some sorts. I have to back to my vids to get more details in what I missed.

I also saw the chems in 99 as well, but I think this show is definitely a one of a kind show compared to all the times I've seen them. Glad you had a great time!   :)

day two was an entirely different experience for me, so glad I went in early to take it in. the quality of music was much MUCH higher on sunday. (pretending the warehouse didn't exist helped.)

the Chemical Brothers were on point. no encore, but that was expected. I at times struggled to figure out if they'd changed the set since the Howard Castle show or I just didn't remember. either way, still still thoroughly fantastic.

it didn't occur to me until they posted on social media afterwards that this was their last live show of the year. no tour dates for 2023 yet right? somehow yesterday feels even more special knowing that.

I'm also buzzing off of hearing other people comment on how amazing their set was. it was very well received.

San Fran 2022 Portola Festival
Show of Maturity.

****WARNING! Another long narrative review by rynostar. It gets emotional (and slightly dark)****

The 2019 California shows were the bookend of my Chems gigs prior to lockdown. The last being the emotional ecstasy at the Bill Graham in San Fran, my return to the Chems experience was serendipitous to be a return to the Bay Area. I wrestled with the idea of attending the Denver set, but gave into reason that the extra journey was beyond my current means (I bought a condo last year...). In lead up, my thoughts dwelled on this latest pilgrimage as one of renewal. Tom and Ed (and Adam and Marcus and Lyle and Errol) is the main reason we gather together and celebrate. However, spending time with the brother and sisterhood was of most importance to me.

I arrived to SFO as the sun set over the pacific horizon. I was a ball of nervous, excited, and focused energy as i came out of arrivals texting pooter to determine where to go and potentially what to look out for. I already jumped the gun by heading to the AirTran towards the BART when pooter notified me him and Fern were already here and asking which airline I flew (meant I went the long way to go back where I started). Saw Fern first as I walked through Int'l arrivals pickup. A wave of excitement and cautiousness rushed over seeing friends for first time post-pandemic while mindful of not knowing others comfort level. Pooter pulls up the car, we hop in, and drive towards Petaluma. In the car, on arrival to home, and we'll into the wee hours of the night, the conversations continued almost exactly where we left off in 2019. Life, work, relationships, covid, the Brother and Sisterhood, and most importantly, the Chems.

We started on the same conversational paths next morning as we grabbed groceries, 'toured' Petaluma, prepared for the journey, ate lunch in Salsulito, and drove to the festival. As we hunted for parking, all I could do was squirm due to a constant need to pee. I purposely over hydrated and carb/protein loaded knowing energy would be spent over the course of the day. The over hydration resulted in immediately hopping out of the car telling all to ignore me as I relieved myself (finding toilets would be a constant issue through the next 24 hours). Arriving at the festival, we immediately head to the far end crane stage to find shaker in his eye of truth outfit. Pooter finds him after a few tracks of an unknown dj. we exchange hugs and head back to the warehouse in an attempt to connect with Inchem, Whirly, Stash, and see Kelly Lee Owens play. No luck on them, but we find pooters friend Matt on the way as a welcome addition to the party. Kelly Lee Owens set felt more suited for a dark small venue rather then this long warehouse. Her songs were dark, atmospheric, with breathy vocals and bass lines annoyingly shaking the warehouse supports and stage structure. A few times she would change from breathy vocals to regular pump up the festival crowd regular voice clashing with the vibe of her tracks. We decide food is needed for mileage knowing levels will soon rise. My food order and consumption was quicker then the others meaning I had time for (another) bathroom trip and a jaunt to merch. Grab a plain Chems logo hoodie knowing the poster would be a hassle while dancing and not interested in the tie dye shirts (plus, I like that the font is now surrender blue). The rest of the group finished eating and we head to DJ shadow at ship tent. Standing outside, I couldn't even see him on stage as the video screens were dark for the five minutes from our arrival. He ends a track and finally lights flash on him showing he's deeper into the stage than I expected. I'm not a huge fan of DJ Shadow as a solo artist (think he's brilliant in UNKLE collabs with James Lavelle). However, I do pay a huge debt of respect for his live sets and his groundbreaking history. Most tracks were still hip-hop breaks, samples, and a brief interlude into drum and bass. We soon head back to crane stage for Blessed Madonna and attempt to find Shaker. We get there and one of the trio of djs leading up had a Calgary Flames hockey jersey on. The Edmonton Oilers fan yells out "Fuck the Flames" and proceeds to start dancing. Had at least one girl in front of me surprised by this "hate" remark as I immediately proceed to appreciation of said djs work properly (ie dancing).

Blessed Madonna came on. Drops the history of disco track I still love (and still need a proper track id) she played at the Shrine 2019 gig. Continues with the Soulwax remix of Tame Impala's Let It Happen which Pooter and I synched in voicing and dancing (you were not forgotten Enjoyed). Follows up with an extended dark edit of Kano's It's A War. I'm in full solo sing along mode to the later with it being my intro to italodisco in my "youth". At this stage of life. I embrace solo moments more now when connecting to tracks younger crowds have no/ little concept of. Stepped out (peeing again), came back to dark techno immediately followed by...lil Jon A Milli...well now the frat bro / sorority sista crowd announced who they were by challenging all to twerk offs that lost relevance after 2010. Some dark techno followed and she closed the set returning to heavy string and horn disco which pulled me back. She started into Dan Hartman's Relight My Fire, I'm back to anthem mode, but quickly disappointed when the track cuts halfway. Guess she's done...Peggy Gou's next. But it's dark and approaching Tom and Ed time. Blessed Madonna, you never disappoint me. I always leave your sets ready to go to the next level.

As we walk back to the main pier stage to attempt to find our missing hood, the next level hits. Conversations are guided in multiple directions, my movement feels smooth, This is why I prepared all day in food, hydration, and stretching. Once outside the Vip exit to find whirly, stash, Connor, and inchem, the toilet rings again. On my return, I find pooter and approach him and realize the folks I just walked around were whirly, stash, and Connor. Out comes my 'OMG! YOU GUYS!!!' White girl hugging moment happens with them. As chatting happens, a white hoodie man with a perfect bald shave walks in front, past us two steps, and I clue in reach out to stop this man. "PHIL!" (Inchem). Immediately realize he wasn't expecting this shock, see the defensiveness in his face turn to immediate joy recognizing it's us. We catch up as James Blake finishes his jazz-ambient style set and as we wait for pooter to return from merch (no luck for him). As soon as pooter returns and James Blake finishes the set, we position the brother and sisterhood in the general section dead centre about ten feet in front of the sound booth. The excitement is now contagious. As hinted about in previous post, I couldn't contain Whirlys excitement, and my own was long gone. Conversations of expectations with it being a 1hr30m festival set, comparisons to Denver, and wonderment of new tracks were at rapid speed now. The Chems chill recording on the sound system moved into Timmy Thomas Why Can't We Live Together as tech crew moved off stage, lasers and lights did last tests, and the smoke started pouring off stage. Last second call outs and hugs to the family.

This is where I pause the narrative. The conscious decision to prepare my energy levels (food, water, numerous pee stops) came into effect. Knowing this pilgrimage was with those I trusted and in a 'safe' space, I decided to drop extra energy during the Blessed Madonna set. Some of you knew as I wanted to ensure someone was aware. Throughout the day, I was keeping my eyes open for emergency service locations (behind warehouse) and emergency exits. I saw first responders help a group of security as we watched the Kelly Lee Owens set. They were quick, professional, and clearly assisted the gentleman who I estimated might have and knocked his noggin. Once my system kicked in as we connected pre-set, my body felt like it should be moving somehow, but I needed to stay with the group. My mind started to partition in two. One side started to question my state, how we'd get home if I'm still not of clear mind, is everyone else okay, am I annoying someone around me. My mind kept looping back to the reasonable rational these worries were already been accounted for and that every step on this pilgrimage had a purpose.

The other side of my mind was screaming "Hello Old Friends!" as I blew kisses to Tom and Ed as came to the stage.

CWU face intro was a hearty soup I never realized I needed to hear as a live opener.

BRB as the first true track immediately hit me as it felt worn as a second side closer having seen it repeatedly since 2015.

Go carried the energy, having it front end still seems right.

Drum track (Inchem told me name after) was new to me. The drum lines connect with me along with the deep bass. I need further dive into the track though.

George and Mildred making an early appearance for UTI/Hoops appearance was enjoyed and got hellos from me. I still am used to UTI/robots in the second side.

OOC/DIA was the only "spoiler" for me since the original return to gigs last year. It was the most anticipated track for me.

New "Woo" track (again Inchem id'ed after) was very bass heavy and unnerving with the old ISYT Asian kabuki / new Caucasian actress in make-up as my mind now really split in two as mentioned before.

HBHG, thank god they threw out the furniture!

Setting Sun, they tricked me there. Was not expecting an even darker side.

Eve of Destruction, me belting out "Boku wa shitanan de da namo".

I think No Geography vocal was thrown in at this point with me and Inchem motioning at each other for each part.

As we hit half time / Hold On San Francisco, I turned to the group and told pooter and fern, I'm in my head right now too much and just gave a quick hug to both to attempt to get some of that energy out. Reflecting on the front side of the set now a day in the future, I realize it's gotten darker and my emotions reacted in my heightend state.

As EV started Inchem was yelling over to me, "where's Star Guitar?!". I'm feeling the build to the hard drop  and I can't get into the rhythm...BRAIN WHY WONT YOU STOP!!!! Drop hits, I stumble in time, I turn to whirly and stash.

Now I pause again to vouch that Whirly can confirm that for 2019, her and stash stuck to the balcony / seated areas for the ga shows. This was my first show with them as part of the group. Everyone in the sister and brotherhood I've talked to who's experienced a Chems gig with them has described this overwhelming joy. Whirly I had looked over at a few times in the first half and could see her energy.

When I turned to look at them this time, whirly and stash were dancing hard at it. I could feel their combined energy. My mind immediately switched to full side joy mode. The rhythm came back, the flow, all the nervous energy was stopped in its tracks.

GTKO was my return to solo synchronized dance team (w/ ghost enjoyed) in time with every clap, every lyric, every beat. Young tall Asian kid directly behind me yells in my ear "holy shit! You're in perfect time". This ain't my first tom and Ed rodeo son. I was seeing them back when you were still likely in pre-school (no I did not say that to him). No confetti though. That was a surprise.

DYOH/Get on up on it like this, I have a specific dance when this hits. It's low, it's chaotic, it's when my step count skyrockets.  It's my all out song.

Star Guitar, new lead in trick me again before hitting temptation synths and no swoon lead in. But the original bass drum line brings me back to speed. I love the added circles visuals giving the '70s space futurism feel. Me and Inchem turn to each other right before the drop. I scream "we going up!" and just pogo for the stars.

Swoon, the switch to after Star Guitar is nice to see as it condenses parts that repeat at times.

Wide Open, another new darker bass line trickery. Totally different feeling. In 2019, it made me cry. In 2022, it makes me want to take charge. It makes me focus.

Galvanize as second half close felt appropriate. Was happy to see the octave cat end transition smoothly fit.

No encore, but not needed for me. The 1hr30m felt like a perfect fit even as my mind split in different directions. Overall, the dark front side approach and back light side approach literally played with my emotions, but I liked it. The energy of the crowd around us was great outside of a group that kept getting people on their shoulders and the tall Asian orange shirt kid who gave off "influencer" vibes. With no saturate balloons and no confetti during GTKO, it felt like a bare bones interaction experience where you had to pay attention to the stage. We were far enough back that we couldn't see Tom and Ed consistently, but I was okay with that. Pooter later said that shaker was supposedly a few people to the side of us but we couldn't see him. Mesamm, wished we would have connected at some point.

After it ended, we all hugged and I once again yelled "thank you old friends". After a few minute wait, we went towards the vip entrance as Whirly, Stash, and Connor were going to find Errol and see if they could arrange anything. Our group debated new transitions, new tracks, memories. I was coming back to grounded and feeding off everyone's positive energy. Once we got word that festival rules likely meant it was a no go tonight we started towards vehicles (not surprised it being a goldenvoice event).

Taking a seat in the car after made me realize I had been moving in one form or another for 8+ hours. I wasn't sore, but could tell my legs were tired. We dropped Matt at his hotel after getting through all the other festival goers heading the same roads. I took the front seat after dropping Matt off as I could tell that I needed to be close to Pooters energy again. We made our way across the Golden Gate Bridge with the fog hanging just over the first major beams of the arches. We listened to Nine Inch Nails, Health, and a Kelly Lee Owens track that was much more appropriate now as we climbed the hills back to Petaluma. When getting home, I was getting back to a vulnerable mindset. Our discussion led through the night to deep contemplation that challenged my psyche (don't worry, it was all optimistic and positive).

Throughout the next night, I woke up every hour to use the washroom as I hydrated a lot after the set. Waking up in the morning, Pooter and I get into analysis of the show. We get texts from Inchem about his success post leaving us as he stuck around for a bit. The rest of the morning was relaxed as I got ready to catch my plane back to Canada. I have deep heartfelt farewells for now at the airport, went pee (again), and started writing this post. It's taken me 5 hours to write and reflect on this (waiting, in plane, and now home in bed).

I needed this weekend. I came expecting to have a great time, which I did have. I came out with an unexpected vulnerability that I had to tell myself to "Don't Think, just let it flow". I'm calling this the show of maturity for myself as I ended up learning a ton about myself in a short span of time. To the sister and brotherhood, it was worth the wait. Thank you for letting me share in your energy. To Tom and Ed. We may have been too far to see, but I was just happy to see you create another another pilgrimage for us.

Ryno, thank you so much for taking the time to write this writeup. I really appreciate the heavy thought and effort in this review, and just wanna let you know that I value you as a person, a Chem's fan, a friend, and someone who always has the best intentions and interests of others, with a good heart to match. I'm glad you took something with you from this show, whether it be maturity, clarity, or peace, or whatever. What matters is that you will always take some special gift or emotion from this band and take it with you as a constant reminder of joy, fulfillment, and spending your life to the fullest with friends close by. I'm also happy that Pooter took you in and be a source of friendship and brotherhood to you when you arrived.

Your review was detailed and gave me insight and answers in what I was contemplating when I was trying to find you guys when phone reception was down. Another thing too was I was running late , In which I will explain in my review ( still a work in progress) But overall I had a joker smile reading your review as soon as it hit

I just got there to the venue and made it in time at the start of his set. Much different set since I Iast saw him 7 years ago. Alot of his classic tracks got revamped, but change is good especially when trying to reach a younger crowd. ( He's in his 50's I think) I enjoyed Pathetic Age more than Mountain Will Fall, but wish for more Unkle.

100 agree! Really impressed by this makeover and much harder this time around. Really stood out from the rest of the classic tracks played that night. The oil/ water/ 60's red dye visual was classic psychedelic, and those siren key drops just made it more impressive.

QUOTE OF THE YEAR!

I'm happy the SG piano version is still going strong. I couldnt really dance as hard as I used to but I gave it my all.

You finally danced with the Chemical Mommy! She was the first one to hug me when I first met her back in the day. I'm happy you got to dance with her in the brotherhoid/sisterhood group!

"The over hydration resulted in immediately hopping out of the car telling all to ignore me as I relieved myself"

"My food order and consumption was quicker then the others meaning I had time for (another) bathroom trip"

"Stepped out (peeing again)"

"Once outside the Vip exit to find whirly, stash, Connor, and inchem, the toilet rings again"

"I woke up every hour to use the washroom as I hydrated a lot after the set"

Ryno, I want you to know that my restroom is always available if you ever visit. I think Professor Albus Dumbledore said it best, "Restrooms will always be given at Chemical Brothers concerts to those who deserve it.

Still processing, and it is back to reality and work tomorrow. I had the most splendid weekend, topped by the most immersive full body experience that was The Chemical Brothers on Sunday night. More to come in the form of a review but want to check in. What an incredible show, and it is a pleasure and an honor to have experienced it with you ❤️

I have an audio only version as well. The bass takes over several of the songs, but good to have regardless. Don't know how to fix that or if it's just what it is.

I'm also buzzing off of hearing other people comment on how amazing their set was. it was very well received.

Just wandering over to Portolla reddit catching up on peoples reactions. It is tremendously positive.

It really has that feeling that Coachella 2023 is locked down already.

Really enjoyed the new show! The new songs and visuals were amazing! It was also one of the best crowds I've been in to see them.

One thing that was very noticeable while walking out of the festival, everyone was absolutely awestruck from their set. We went to the after party nearby and everyone wanted to talk about how incredible they were. Even at the airport someone saw our wristbands for Portola and asked if we watched them.

Reddit is raving about them too. I think they made a lot of new fans at that show.

Here's hoping Coachella has them locked in.

I noticed the usual hugging and cheering after the show. Reddit approves of it, but I love feeding off the energy from the reviews of other people's encounters with this show, especially those seeing the Bros for the first time.

Now you got new fans googling their name, discography, followed by sales hopefully.

The circle of life!

Absolutely incredible. Really really hope this prompts the chems to do another U.S. tour!! Maybe I could even catch more than one show if I really wanted to...

And as much as I want our "little" fandom to stay little and tight knit, the Chems really are just too good to keep to ourselves. Everyone must know!

Incoming!!

Here goes. I post now otherwise I'm never going to finish!! A disclaimer - writing reviews on mobile when you have clumsy clubbed thumbs like I do is a freaking challenge.  ;-) But I've been taking it easy, taking the memory in, and basking in this afterglow for a while. Best weekend I've had in quite literally years. And years. So here's some notes, and apologies in advance for the personal meandering. Tried to keep it brief(er), but well, you know. Haha.

The buildup to the weekend was slow and surreal. It was time to venture out and be part of the living again. To feel good and indulge my senses again on a grand scale. So the opportunity to see Tom and Ed... headlining a brand spankin' new festival... under the sky... in our most favorite US city... where we know our friends will be... It felt good to have this to look forward to.

On the Saturday, we took our time exploring and revisiting the city a bit. Every now and again I'd spot someone in a Chemical Brothers shirt hurrying past the corner of my eye before being swallowed up by the city - like little reminders that showtime was upon us. A lunch date with Pooter and Fern, fresh in from Denver with a moment to give before they headed back to the airport to collect Rynostar.

We arrived to the venue later that day to check things out and see what's what, and get a grip on how to navigate the big night.  What an interesting place! There were colossal loading cranes around the perimeter of the venue.  Off to one side was an anchored naval ship equally impressive in its size as the giant cranes. Under ours and everyone's feet was an enormous concrete pier, with large areas covered in massive sheets of astroturf. Facing stage front and to the righ was the glorious San Francisco skyline glittering in the coppery golden-hour light. To the other side looking inland billowing blankets of fog crept over the hillside. We hung for a good while breathing in. Hearing snippets of conversation. Checking out the tents (and avoiding the massively packed warehouse at all cost) and eventually made our exit before the crowds did.

Sunday morning I was jolted awake at 7am by a serious case of glint. I think it was 7am. Maybe. I don't know. The city was barely rising and everyone else in the room was asleep. I drifted back to dreamland. I got a much needed few more winks before getting on with the day later that morning.

We took a Lyft to the venue in the late afternoon. It was cooler that day so I was grateful for the extra layers and that the Sunday crowd appeared to take advantage of sweatshirts being sold at the merchandise booths! We picked up a tie dye Chems shirt (nice nod to the 60's San Francisco throwback vibe of peace & love) and a black and white Elektrobank shirt which complements my old one :-) I really dug the Eve of Destruction/Golden Gate bridge poster, which would have made an incredible souvenir from the night, but I passed as I could not bear the disappointment had it gotten damaged.

Tick tock it was nearing showtime!! After Blessed Madonna, we reunited with Pooter and Fern, Rynostar, and inchemwetrust. Where to go? The excitement levels were so high they caused twinges of anxiety. So many questions about safety and if there'd be room enough to dance and where do we meet if we get selected and and and. So little time to contemplate. Breathe in. As we closed in the crowd seemed so... not aggressive at all! Genuinely and truly up for it. Even as Pooter led us deeper into the crowd nearer the stage. Not crammed in, but close. But not so close you couldn't move and dance. I turned to stash. There was no turning back now. He said he was good. Connor was good. The crew to my left, they were good. Dancing dude with the sway and shades in front of me looked good to go. The people all around as it started to pack in. They were good. We were all good.

The terrain on this show felt different. It felt like it flowed different. Yes, there are the familiar peaks and valleys that I love with their shows. But this hit my headspace different. It was blissfully communal and familiar, yet hit a bit harder, a bit darker, a bit more wild. Deeper. Trippier. The brilliant, larger than life visuals paired with dizzying soundscapes carried by thundering beats and soul dropping bass - I cannot stop smiling thinking about it all. There were some musical switchbacks to their song intros... is that a bit from Swoon? Wait, maybe? Is that.. wait what? Then the song reveals itself as though it is being born in the echoes of the Chemical Brothers' body of work. Sigh.

No need for fog machines. That came naturally with the thick bay fog steadily rolling in. Instead of dancing under the stars, we were dancing in the clouds. Lasers and flashing lights bounced off the mist like lightning flickering in a thunderhead. Those gargantuan loading cranes looming on the perimeter in the fog took on a freaky, almost lifelike quality.

Now some of my highlights, babble and observations from my beautiful evening courtesy of The Chemical Brothers. Of which there are a few:

'Come With Us' the voice commands through the fog. The loop goes faster faster faster and faster. The bass lays down like Thor's hammer, rippling a current beneath my feet. Block Rockin Beats. I lose my shit. The bass is relentless. It's like bombs are going off beneath my boots. Or like a gurgling kraken is rising from the bay. Sirens scream through the air. The joy. The joy of being in that crowd. I grab onto my husband's hand for dear life. Yes, I'm being overly dramatic. No, I don't care!

Mad As Hell. Such a crowd pleaser in all aspects. This was everything I never knew I needed at that specific moment in time. The laughing coupled with the visuals emerging in and out of fog was downright creepy! I found myself laughing as well. Just like those creepy faces staring at me through the fog were laughing. And the way the beat pulled me out from my headspace as the laughter fell away. It's a spectacle. Bombs are going off, and whirs of sound climax and fade out.

Oh! The new songs! New songs are ALWAYS a treat. The first new song (accompanied by vivid, eye searing marching drummer visuals) has this glorious, oceanic build. Then it... drops you off a funky ass ledge. I really don't know how else to describe it. But I found myself... laughing again. I hear there's no reason to live. But there is absolutely reason to live. If anything for the squelchy bass. I'm here for it. I was there for it. We were all there for it.

Star Guitar, with that gorgeousness intertwined with New Order. My son's got blue eyes... I look to him. I wonder if this song subconsciously has something to do with his love and appreciation for Joy Division and New Order. He's not a dancer like his old mom. At least not that he's allowed me to see. But he's moving here. I search Connor's face and I quickly see the response I needed to see. Eyes wide, smiles under his mask. My heart melts. For a second I was transported to 2002, when I was new at the mom thing and Connor was a little kid. I know it reads like Velveeta here, and I'm sorry for being cheesy but let me have this moment!

The religious experience of Escape Velocity. Thank you thank you thank you thank you Tom and Ed and my crew and everyone in the vicinity for this incredibly wild, ecstatic, jubilant full body moment!! The twisted warped treatment on the vocal was mad. Mad! The bass felt like it was pulled from where the hellfire burns the hottest. All were present in this wild sonic baptism. Freak flags held high. I have not danced that hard in years! This was the makeup moment from the last time I saw them. It was a god moment.

At one point there were some shoulder riders ( a girl and a guy) directly to the left of me. The girl - a cute, petite, Herculean strength bearing gal - had this guy on her shoulders like a fuckin boss. There was some wobbling.  I put my arm up as did others to steady the guy. The girl and I lock eyes. She winks and flexes her bicep. I laugh, and revelry commences. Eventually the wobble got to be too much, and the guy started to tumble pulling both of them backward to the ground. "Are you OK?" I ask. Hercules girl gives me a thumbs up but the guy's legs were still pretzeled around her shoulders on the ground. I try to pull her up and others join in. Without missing a beat, the dude with the sunglasses in front of me turned around, stretched out his arm, and pulled Hercules girl up in one swoop. Then in a moment, they were engulfed somewhere further out into the crowdsea.

The beginning part of Hey Boy Hey Girl that leads to a sonic freefall, when the crowd loses its shit. If you know, you know.

The very noticeable moments when I fell in and out of a "that girl from the Acid Test video" headspace. In my own head with all the sensory overload around me. Always finding my way back by a bomb bass jolting my core, or a nudge from a friend. Or my husband giving me a squeeze to make sure I didn't drift into space. Or you know, when you realize oh shit, that's Eve of Destruction! When did that happen?

The second new Dreaming song. It's a stomper. Boots to the ground, thundering trippy stomper. A stomper that drills into your head. It's so clean in its tripped out stomping fuzzy synth glory. GOODNESS! What a track! I need that in my life.

Then there was the gratefulness I felt during the womb like Wide Open. Looking behind me to see the crew's arms held high, fingers branched like leaves flittering in the wind. The voice from No Geography outstretching it's  hand, pulling me out of my head again. The voice said I'll take you along with me. So I did.

Oh my god, what have I done? All I wanted was a little fun. "DUDE," I hear stash say,  "It's fuckin rad to hear this!" We'd been saying it to each other all week. How are they in our heads?

Then there was the final trip inside my mind where everything was lovey dovey. There's nothing else. Just being present in that space (wherever it may be) and being pulled back into reality with some final commands. Galvanize. Don't hold back. More bombs were dropping beneath my feet. I've read reports of noise complaints from folks across the bay. I can see why. I hope they're still not mad about it. Oh yes, where am I? Yes. The beautifully berzerk octave scribbles from Tom indicate the spaceship was leaving the port. Thank you thank you thank you!! The chattering crowd dissolves into the fog. The cool air breeze from off the bay tickles my sweaty hairline. I stretch and feel the sweat cooling on my skin. Breathe. Then take a last look around as we were sent out into the night.

Our weary bones with our still spry son keep an eye on his old mom and dad as we quickly navigate our way toward where we came in. It's a blur. The detour and moments afterward, so happily exhausted and gob smacked, the Lyft back to the hotel, going further from the pier back into the heart of the city. Then finally collapsing my tired body into bed and into dreamland.

I can't even.

Then a hard reset back to reality. Sort of. I had the next couple days off work so the transition would be manageable. We grabbed a Lyft to the BART station, and the weekday city was vibrant and harried and alive. It felt normal. And I felt more awake than I had any right to. We arrived to the airport and the line thru TSA was an utter shit show, stopping the rock so much so, we missed our flight back home. Seething. Breathing. There's jackshit we could do except wait for the later flight. Then there came lemonade out of lemons. Had we not missed the flight, a young man wouldn't have approached us as we caught his eye. He noticed we were wearing our Chems shirts. "Hey, you guys were there, right? Oh my god!  They were the best act all weekend! I'll never not see them! Ever!" He first heard about them when he saw Hanna. A while later, an easygoing looking bearded dude with a friendly smile approached. He too noticed our shirts. He was wearing a baseball cap embroidered with Coachella across the front. Cool! Another festival goer!  "What did you think of the show?" he asked.

"It was amazing and it was all the things! We were there to see the Chemical Brothers!"

"Oh yeah, they are always amazing!"
We briefly chit chatted a bit more. He was headed home after what was a monster past few days. It turned out he worked for Goldenvoice, and he was killing time before his flight going around asking folks about the event and was curious about feedback.

So thankful for everything and everyone! I felt like I was dreaming being there with my family, my extended family Pooter (you are always there for us) and Fern and Ryno and inchemwetrust (we had such a good post show chat, real talk catch up on life). The looks of wonder and joy on their faces during the show is something I will not soon forget. Tom, Ed, and Errol. I can't stop smiling.

I'm feeling ready. Love you all.

Yes yes x 1000!

If Paul doesn't book them for Coachella after this recent spectacle, he's an idiot!

Takes two to tango. Tom and Ed have got to want to do it. I'm pretty sure Paul Tollett and Goldenvoice is more than willing to make this work. Plus, I've basically convinced myself this was always part of the bigger picture when they signed on for Portola.

Might be speculating too hard, but a springtime XDUST12 release would fit perfectly with a Coachella appearance in 2023.

Gonna have to start saving. I have unfinished business since 2011.

But he's right guys, we ain't trying to subdue conversation or point out redundant posts. Just respectful to go straight to the source in a private manner, rather than putting the onus on Csar to reach out to those requesting. I'm guilty of this too.  :-X

Oh Whirls! Just read your review! Just to see you have a moment with your family is probably the most awesome thing a fan like yourself could have! Even from my view, I envy any family that has great taste in music, especially the psychedelic, synth blazing, bass blasting kind!! Nice moment with your son at the show and having him watch out for you and dad. The best moms are the ones that start their kids young at live shows!

Every chems moment is never cheesy! Just like when you and Connor had that moment at Star Guitar! I on the other hand was crying like a B when it played, and that was pretty much my open audition for some Hallmark channel movie.

I'm glad you got some downtime before you went back to work. I had a day and a half when I got back. I've been reading thse reviews as soon as they dropped here. When I got back to work, I got a little down in the dumps. Back to life, back to reality, etc. But a sweet reminder of memories and positive flow of thoughts from your eyes from your review cheered me up after a slight struggle of me going back to the world. Very happy to see you again with your family enjoying the Chems.

I also enjoyed our talk after the show! Loved listening to you and sharing stories with each other.

SG was literally played backwards! (EDIT: I MEAN SWOON)

Ok, I meant that it was divided into phrases or parts. beginning, mid, and end. This show just rearranged it into the end, mid, beginning.

Hear it for yourself (not my video btw)

I've been on a non stop listening bonanza of the lives Chems sets. Portola was a treat to experience in person and amazing that we now have the audio as a keep sake.

It has been an invigorating experience to dive back into the beginning live shows and listen to the progression of their live shows over all these years.

It got me thinking... and forgive me if this already exists, but would we have the ability to create a website like this: https://www.ninlive.com/home.html

Put all of the Chems live audio and video into one collection? The Chems are my favorite band and I could honestly listen to only them for months on end. Their live show allows us all to dive in deeper to what they have to offer. I have a lot of their live sets from all these years and have been fortunate to attend a good handful of shows. There was a time when I missed out because of travel costs or life to see certain tours. I've been thankful to so many of you for sharing the lives sets and thinking it would be fun to have it in a place to share with all current and new fans.

I'm sure there are website logistics, hosting, costs, and perhaps band/label approval. Might be a fun project to dive into going into this winter. Thoughts?

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS @ PORTOLA MUSIC FESTIVAL SAN FRANCISCO
STILL GOT TRICKS UP THE SLEEVE!

What a perfect time to go back out to outdoor festivals and shows. Mask mandates got lifted, people have taken their vaccine shots, and everybody's back to being outdoors. It does kind of feel like nothing has happended since 2019 even though we gone through enough already as it is. With that cleared out the way, there is a big sigh of relief for concert lovers who are ready to get back into some reveling and dancing.

For Tom and Ed, its back to work as usual. During the pandemic, they have been making strides to get back in the studio and work their magic since their 2019 release No Geography, which was a refreshing take on our ears, and yet its sound imo carried us through the phases of the next 2 years. Hope arose in 2021 when we were given The Darkness That You Fear, a new track that would shed some light not just in our dark times going through the Covid crisis, but on some future releases and perhaps a new tour. Fast forward to last May when I was floored to hear that the bros would be coming out to California for the Portola Music Festival in San Fransisco in September. I was slightly skeptical for for a very small brief moment of time because I was wondering how the The Chems would pull of a show without any new material, but at the same time, I remembered their track record of always improving from their last show and pulling out a some great surprises as well. But if there's one live act that can do the job and over-deliver, and get the attention of new fans, the Chemical Brothers are the best live act to do it, and they've consistently kept pushing the bar higher in their sets, and not just musically, but also visually.

WELCOME BACK!

It's Friday morning! I just got home from work. Tired as i was, I was excited to be driving out to San Francisco to see my boys again. After I slept and woke up around 3pm, I did some quick errands, got the car gassed up, packed my carry on, made some dinner, then just laid in bed, just thinking of sundays show and meeting the forum mates one again. I slowly drift off to sleep. I was surprised that I slept that whole night without waking up because I tend to be too excited to sleep and I need the energy and focus while driving to SF the next day. I left around 5:15am on Saturday morning . I got some minor tunnel vision when I left L.A. but when the sun came up, I was kind of riding smoothly toward my destination. I had my Spotify to keep my listening habits occupied. I play the Lowlands set, the Anti-nazi mix, Come With Us, the new Beth Orton album, and a mix of other tunes. I got there to my hotel pretty quick and landed to SF around maybe 12:30pm when I checked in. I was relieved when I crashed on my bed and just kind of thought how I was going to kill time before the show started tomorrow. So, I walked and traveled about the city, which was a crispy and clean 65 degree weather and did some snooping around, but didn't find much in particular. I did find a record store and saw some copies of The Chems OOC Sasha remixes but already owned them. Later on, I took Boscos' earlier recommendation and went to Boudin's Bakery near the fishermans pier next to the ocean. Had 2 French Dips and they were awesome! I went back to my hotel later that night and just relaxed. I slept that night much differently than the previous night as I got overly excited for the show and had a minimum of like maybe 5 hours of sleep, including waking up about 3 times on sunday morning. It happens! The next day around noon, after a fat and hearty lunch, followed by some quick text messages to my Chembase team (Whirly, Pooter, and Ryno) saying that I will arrive around 4ish. Pooter texts me back and wants me to meet at the Kelly Lee Owens set around 4:30. No problem! I get another text from Whirly that said to meet up near the VIP exit near the main stage for the Chems at 8pm. I get dressed up and make my way to the front of my hotel for my Lyft ride. But what happened was my driver couldn't find me. I told him that I'm actually in front of the hotel but he blows me off. So I caught another Lyft! Okay, so it looks like he's gonna arrive in three minutes. Nope, he bails out as well! Finally I get a car to take me and now I'm off to the show. I already lost some time ( 45 minutes late )and got dropped off at least 2 blocks away from the festival entrance. And for some reason, I had an unsettling feeling, I just felt like crap which is weird because my arms and my legs just felt so weak. I wasn't sure if it was some anxiety attack or not. So, when I got out of the vehicle, I slowly walked and took my time to breath deep and calm down to let myself some space.

I get to the front entrance and there's ALOT of people trying to get in. I showed the gate my ticket and made my way inside. The Portola festival has 4 stages, in which the Chems would be playing and closing the main stage. I went to the Warehouse stage to find Pooter and the gang but to only find out that the Kelly Owens Show was over, I then tried to text the gang but there was no phone signal or internet data for my phone, so I was stuck with no communication with my team. So I'm back to square one! So I'm kind of winging it right now, so I go to DJ Shadow, which was in the next tent, and I was eager to check him out. He played tracks from our Pathetic Age and The Mountain Will Fall, plus he played some new revised versions of classic songs such as 'What Does  Your Soul Look Like Part 3, March of Death, etc. Organ donor was played near the end. So it was kind of a treat. Other than that the tent was nearly packed for the San Jose resident. I then went to the Blessed Madonna playing at the next tent, and for some reason, I got a miraculous text from Pooter and Ryno to meet at 'Madonna' near the back of the crowd. So I went over to find them but no dice, so I got situated near the center. Alot of manly bodies dancing and full of sweat were surrounding me, and kind of look like they were gonna squeeze me in and make a inchem sandwich. LOL. The crowd looked like they were to countdown to some NYE party, but that's just the vibe I got. Some house tracks, disco, and other tracks that I wasn't familiar with, but I'm never to disengage from the sound and the vibe that I was getting into. There was a stripped version of Tom's Diner playing in that tent I think, which I thought was kind of interesting. I check my phone later and its 15 minutes to 8, so I make my way near the main stage to prepare myself for the carnage. but before I did I made a stop at the merch booth and buy a Chems shirt. Black T with the aqua blue logo. Shirt number 4 for me!

I finally went to the VIP entrance near the main stage where I was able to meet up with Mia with a big hug and shook hands with Stash, and their son Connor. Seconds later, I see Pooter with Fern ( Its Fern from the last show and the newest addition to our club) and right in the corner of my eye I see Ryno. Now my blood is circulating and my energy is peaking form my near meltdown when I got here. Mia looked looked great and never aged ,The chemical mommy of the us forumites. Pooter, with his warm and kind demeanor, yet sophisticated, ready to battle with us tonight. And Ryno, always ready to geek out on things chemically related and just being super friendly. We all talk and discuss about the last meetup, the last shows we been to, and how were all doing. Just basic catching up here and there. I know we would have more time to talk after the show because in a few minutes, the Chems were gonna come on, so Whirls guides us to the sweet spot, which was near mid-center in front of the stage. James Blake finishes his set and comes off the stage. We immediately hear 'Scale' playing in the background. I'm prepped and ready as the night got darker. We then hear music coming in and light blaring the stage. Here we go!

FAMILIAR TERRITORY

INTRO/ BRB

The show starts off with some unfamiliar music and blue lights start circulating on the screen for 30 seconds. I'm waiting for something to happen on screen. Then out of nowhere, the CWU dot face appeers! I see Ryno with a big smirk on his face and I was totally elated when I saw this. Then we hear the voice 'Come with us and leave your world behind' Then the Voice keeps repeating 'their coming back' and then to 'back back back back back'  Then the lights are blinking faster and sirens go off. The voice crescendo goes higher and higher in the air then 'Boom!'. Strobes are blinking into the crowd for a moment but you cant see the stage because its dark. Then, the strobes turn off and there are now lights pointing directly downward to the stage, and now we see Tom and Ed finally visible to the S.F. crowd saying hello. Everyone freaks out, yells and roars to the sky. To me, it was my impression that Tom and Ed's appearance looked like some surprise Bday party where the room is dark, and when the Bday boy or Bday girl arrive, we turn on the lights and say 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY!' At least that's what I got out if it! Then immediately we hear the first seconds of Block Rocking Beats.

So after 3 years and 4 months, while going through a difficult time and hardship in this country, We finally get redemption and some healing! THE SHOW HAS NOW BEGUN! I was unexpectedly unprepared for the last shows 'closer' to be this years 'opener'! No need to explain this track as it is the standard for us, but new for some of the those in attendence getting their chemical 'cherries' popped for the first time.

https://youtu.be/xbrd7-GRUtQ

GO

Then we have the letters C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L. pop on the screen as Tom and Ed are posing for the crowd. We get then get a transition into GO, in which I thought was pretty smooth. Go had relatively stayed the same with no fixes or changes , but I'd didn't mind a bit, it's my second fave track from the album BITE. So far so good l! The chems are just warming to something bigger.

MAH

I hear some new instrumentation of the GO chorus on the segue that I never heard before. But the BPM gets a tad slower while matching up the 'Horsepower' visualizations that came on the screen, followed by the red woods visual that gives me a recall of the Blair Witch Project for some reason. Mad as hell was peeking in. Then we see the V for Vandetta masks pop up on the screens. It's started to get packed in here where I was standing at, especially a tall guy right in front of me, which happened to somewhat obstruct my view slightly. Plus, there was this guy holding some glow bear on a stick, and it was kind of pulling up in front of my view and got in the way of my camera for any pics or videos. Oh well, It's petty for me now to say anything about it, until later. But I was focused, and I was fixated on that big ass screen for the MAH clown. Then the heavy strobing is probing my eyeballs. Thunder and bass arrive. The clown then casts his spell toward us and now chaos and cheering arise everywhere. The ballistic crowd is jumping up and down and screaming for this massive payout that they got. From my view, everything gets crazy!

https://youtu.be/AfJojgNTeeU

NO REASON

The crawling roaches comes in and And now we're getting into some other track which I had no idea what it is or can't make out.We have drummers colored pink, neon green, and red on the left and right side of the screen and the main screen has a drummer facing us. So this is the new track everyone's talking about. And so there's nice buildup that just keeps going and going, and i'm like 'JUST DROP IT' :)  Then the master drummer on the screen is leading all these march dance formations and 'I'M BLOWN AWAY! Then the next, you know, the band is marching from the both sides of the screen and in front of us. 'WOO' is blasting for the speaker arrays while the marching band is doing these hops and dances. I'm grooving and moving with the crowd, yet the screen drumming kept us in cadence in our steps. Overall, I loved it.

https://youtu.be/lqrQApWiTys

HBHG

Wow! Really coming in early compared to last year. The drummers then make another appearance on each side of the big screen. And they're queuing in Hey Boy Hey Girl. Then a purple neon-lined head starts moving left and right syncing with lasers from his eyes. We now get a different variation of the visuals though. From when I saw last time, are now long gone. The two solo dancers of green, red, and white are now replaced with purple dancers flying around all screens and dancing. A another minor improvement made to the track! But then I realized that I started to notice a trend. The setlist tracks from the last show are actually being pushed slightly earlier than compared to the this show. (I have a side by side comparison for both setlists for both shows down below near the end of this review)

EVE OF DESTRUCTION

Again coming in early! A shorter blend introduces Eve of Destruction. A standout from the last show but one of the most cinematic of all of the visuals imo. It's like the chemical brothers met the producers of Might Morphin Power Rangers. A lot to talk about in terms of production quality and art. The tracks is laced with 90's house with apocalyptic lyrics. One my highlights again for Portola! Crowd was fixated on this one.

MORE CHEERS ON THE PIER!

CHEMICAL BEATS

Chemical Beats remains the same since I last saw it played in the last couple of shows. A few changes were made but slightly noticeable. I noticed the 'laser swishing' FX that is found in the track 'The sunshine Underground'. Additionally, there was another layer of sound on top of the main track that's hard to describe.

If you see the video, you can hear what I'm talking about.
Like I said, it just added some slight fx and an extra layer to the track. In my opinion, the change was minor, but I hope in the future that they can maybe have it come out the gate very strong like it did in 2007, which was a revised version of the classic track. I really enjoyed that version. Other than that, subtle changes were made to Chemical Beats, which is one of my top 3 tracks by the bros.

DREAMIN

Ok this is heavy! We now get a visual that is similar to the one from the BITE era, which is I'll See You There' but with new actors/ actresses? it was such a blur at first because I'm seeing some ritual with a cup and a mask unveiling going on with the visuals with layers of bright magenta and tourquoise. I filmed only the second half, but there was 2 build ups that were really good that led to a hopping crowd with hands in air. TONS OF ENERGY GOING ON! MOST ANTICIPATED NEW TRACK FOR CHEMICAL 10!

https://youtu.be/TxLTnrMU-Jc

UTI/ DYOH

Wow! The robots attacked early in the set. Very surprised again on how the re-arrangement of this setlist is done. Lasers and beams are firing at everything on the pier and we're not running from it! If this crowd is not convinced by now on how powerful this show is, they better get some therapy quick! No DJ in this world, no matter what tent there in, cannot match the majesty of these men from Manchester! The guitar plucks kick in from DYOH over the UTI baseline, which is nonstop and relentless.  We have three little dirty down beats at the tail end of the track.

(MISSING VID! ACCIDENTLY DELETED IT! TRIED HD RECOVER ON PHONE. NO LUCK!)

SETTING SUN!

Probably the biggest and updated song they played that night! A slightly higher pitched vocal followed by some classic oil, water, and red dye fire up the demented yet psych track. We have the track pitch going up and down and i'm like thinking 'Is this the late 60's era?' REALLY REALLY ACID LIKE! This is what i've been craving since the last show. T and E making classic tracks into new monsters. Really impressive all around! Grade A!

https://youtu.be/nRZCIVh5ZPo

GOT TO KEEP ON!

Yessssss! I was ready to put the pedal to the medal and dance my ass off. That sexy tease of bom. bom...bom..bom..bom..bom, bom.bom...bom..bom..bom..bom! When those vocals finally kick in, I get those shivers and i'm squealing like a girl. Still one my top 3 tunes from them right now.

WIDE OPEN

Wide Open steps up, and there was a lot of space before the chorus kicked in that lasted around 2 minutes, but was full ecstasy and total bliss. The blue lights shattered across the stage and Illuminated the crowd. Then the K+D+B birds come flying across the screen. I'm grooving down to the beat and just taking it all in? I can feel myself being in touch with the atmosphere and feeling total relaxation. It's a Euphoric drug.

(FOOTAGE NOT FOUND! ACCIDENTLY DELETED! I FAILED AS A HUMAN!)

YOU HAVEN'T SEEN NOTHING YET!

EV

Okay, we're getting closet to the end of the show. HOLD TIGHT SAN FRANCISICO lights up for a brief moment and then were gonna head into space. Escape Velocity comes in with that warm humming sound. And I'm thinking, 'how is the crowd going to respond to this one?' Because I remember when my ears first laid on this back at Coachella, It just blew me a way of how how fast and strong It sounded out of the gate. We get the golden path lyrics come in, and there's a new visualization of a new actor that comes in and is reciting Wayne Coynes' lyrics. So, another improvement! I heard people in front of me yelling 'YEAH' and just hopping like crazy like it was no tomorrow. I think now would be a good time to bring this up but this crowd has given so much love and reception throughout the show.

https://youtu.be/5fEpUlj742U

FREE YOURSELF/ EML/HOOPS

This is a MONSTER! 3 for the price off one! Getting the only black and white visuals of the show and adding Hoops to it is the best 'Frankenstein' idea in a while. We get 'FREE YOURSELF....DANCE' and 'FREE ME' chasing my ears like some axe murderer in a horror movie is chasing me. Then we get that spinning visual with 'I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO IM ABOUT TO LOSE MY MIND!' It's devastating! BUT NO....WHY STOP THERE WITH EVEN MORE FASTER SPINNING THE SECOND TIME AROUND AND MORE OF 'I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO IM ABOUT TO LOSE MY MIND!' WITH STROBES AND FLASHING, AND A BUILD UP TO SHAKE THE LAST OF MY HAIR FALL OFF MY FREAKING HEAD! Then a BOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

I'm dead!

The song ends with the booming bass still riding in the background at lower volume but kind of just sits there creepingly!  They could've close with that and I would've been fine with that! Please T and E, don't change this track! It's fine the way it is! PERFECT!

https://youtu.be/LbYVqfih7-M

OOC/ DO IT AGAIN

OOC gets 2 improvements! First, a visual facelift. Long gone are the silhouette officers, and are replaced by silhouetted people in outlined green oscilloscopes. (shout out to Marcus)  Second, the Do It Again vocals come in midway but keep the OOC baseline intact. I thought this was really clever and both of these tracks sounded good together! Damn good! Don't be surprised if you see more 2 in 1, or 3 in 1 combo tracks in the future. ( I'll explain this in a bit)

STAR GUITAR

The most important track of the night for me. The definite must hear! After all that me and my family been through during the last few years, this was my moment to just...FLY! I tell Pooter who was next to me to 'put out his best energy possible, this is your moment!' I then look to Ryno and would both smirk at the same time. 'Were Going Up' he says as the build up is about to to drop any second now. AND WE ARE OFF...AND IM HOPPING LIKE MY ASS WAS ON FIRE. The red visual lines from previous sets are now gone and replaced by yellow and white cicrles in rows that are in sync. Then we get to the halfway point where the 'piano keys' kick in. THIS IS THE BEST PART OF THE SONG AND THE BEST MOMENT OF TONIGHT FOR ME PERSONALY! I could listen and dance to an 8 hour loop of this and be resuscitated at the local hospital for Tachycardia and still wouldn't keep me from dancing from this. Then the breakdown hits and we have 'Do You Feel like I feel' echoing through the crowd as the track slows down and takes a break. I cried! This is the first time I ever done this at a show. I felt my cheeks puffed up and my eyes swollen. I was shaking just being emotional. I think my heart was just too overwhelmed!

SWOON

Did we just go backwards on Swoon?  The tracks starts at the exact moment when it was about to end from the last show! I'm scratching my head and shocked at all these changes this show has made. Next thing you know, we get the 'Swoon' couple making out and the audio breakdown (the middle) THEN we finally get the beginning (or near beginning) of the song! What the hell? The phrases of these parts were just switched around but I wondered why when it was already fine the first time. Maybe it was time contraints and had to make some room for the rest of the set list! I'm really curious!

(Yet I failed again! My apologies to the readers)

GALVANIZE

No surprise here. And just looking at the process of elimination. Galvanized is the final track of the night. As the tune is probably the most familiar track with the crowd. Something I just noticed though about that song was the beams of lights that are coming down over the screen like prison bars (keep this in mind) or represent a cage for Mr. Galvanized man. Every time the galvanized man, knocks,  punches, or bangs against the screen he's facing, the light beams move at an angle to make the impression as if the galvanized man is trying to break free from his cage. Which I thought was pretty cool once I realize this lighting trick. Then we get the small sing-along quote, 'My finger is on the button' Then finally Mr. galvanized man breaks free from his cage as he's spinning around in freedom.

And no show is complete without the octave kitten. Ed comes to the mixer and Tom climbs up on his rig and stands the octave kitten by itself. He's twisting knobs to get some choice squeaking and screaming effects. To the San Francisco residence,  It's all coming down on them! The lights, the sound, the screaming fans, and just the most awesome applause praising this wonderful work of art. Then we finally see the 'Love is All' flash across the screen. Ed jumps from the left side of the stage and raises his hands, and accepting the crowd approval. Tom joins him in the middle of the stage as they raise hands and high-five each other, and turn towards the crowd and thanking the fans for coming out tonight.

https://youtu.be/MS5N9L3OuwQ

When the show ended, we talked about the show and glanced at people nearby walking past us who were screaming, shouting, and hugging friends and loved ones. As the crowd was leaving, we started to say our goodbyes to everyone gave out hugs. I walked out with Pooter, Ryno, and Fern to the halfway point near the front entrance. I told them thanks for sharing the experience with me and I'll see them at the next show. Then I walked with Whirls and family to the front gate and onto the street to say goodbye and thanked them for tonight as they got into their Lyft. My ride went and picked me up a few minutes later and I was in back in my hotel room. I crashed on the bed with post-glint all over me and just fell asleep.

POST SHOW NOTES

One of the interesting things that I realize about this particular show (or other shows) is that every time new material or in this case new songs are put out by The Chemical Brothers, some songs have to be cut off from the setlist. For example, this show, we didn't hear Saturate or No Geography. But in return, we got two new tracks! So this is an ongoing thing for Tom and Ed in having to make a tough decision and build a shows setlist.

But in some cases, instead of eliminating some songs to make room for others, How about grouping songs together as in one mix. You heard them before: UTI with HOOPS from the last show, or tonights 2 in 1 of OOC/DIA

The biggest flex from the bros tonight was of course, FREE YOURSELF/EML/HOOPS ! A 3 in 1 monster! So by doing these song 'combos', they don't have to make any sacrifices or removing it from the set list. Tom and Ed were just geniuses tonight!

I put a list of both setlists from 2019 and tonight's show as a side by side comparison to show how they differed vastly from each other. (sort of)

I LEFT MY CHEMS TSHIRT IN SAN FRANCISCO!

Overall, the show was the most surprising and the most positively shocking performance by the Chems, and that's due to the changes in the setlist despite no album. (yet) The improvements on the tracks and the visuals were clever and brilliant. The exciting new tracks 'Reason' and 'Dreaming', and making the flow of the show seemless and steady. The crowd was the perfect test for the Chems to do what they do best, and that's put on a performance for the ages, including this old fart! There are alot of electronic dance acts out there that still see themselves as equals and peers of this music genre, but for now, the crown still belongs to The Chemical Brothers for making live music unforgettable and still bringing the masses in from all walks of life and continue to push their limitless music through the darkness, and into the light! Pier 80 is toast!

I want to say a big thank you to the BTS team for putting some damn good sound on a big ass stage!  Professor K , the chemical advocate  of all time, and all the organizers who made this happen!

Obviously, the biggest thanks goes to my fellow forumites who have been there for me and the best support group I could ever have for this band. S F. was awesome thanks to Pooter, Ryno, Fern, Stash, Connor, and Whirls! Thank you again for embracing me when I first hopped on this ride back in 2009! Love you guys so much!

GUESS I'LL LET THE CAT OUT OF THE BAG!

Shout out to this amazing duo Tom Rowlands and Ed Simmons! I want to give a sincere and heartfelt thank you to The Chemical Brothers for giving me the ultimate experience and finally meeting you both backstage after all these years. You don't know how important and profound this moment is for me. I'm cutting onions as I type this, and my tears 'Don't Hold Back!'

I was really nervous, excited, and shy...all at the same time.
I almost didn't know what to say when I finally met you both but lot of the nervousness went away when I shook hands with Tom and fist bumped Ed. I had so many thoughts and questions ( like when are we going to hear the Galileo stk, the pending 'Drums' track, a Superflash release, the missing clown cherub visuals, Ed's record collection, the story when Aurora went 'missing' etc)  I wanted to ask you, but as soon as I met you both, they kind of flew out of my brain and I forgot because I was so starstruck. LOL!
I'm happy that I told you that how I discovered you both from the very beginning, starting with first compilation CD with your track 'Delik' and then I bought EPD to seal the deal. 1997 live was the year I hopped on this chemical bandwagon and never got off. Tonight would be my 12th show, and many more to come!

One thing I mentioned at the meetup was the music that I listened to while growing up in Los Angeles, and that It continuously grounded me, and I needed a new sound to break that mold.  Your music pulled me out of that norm and shaped my listening habits that helped part of my musical personality. Your music made me more cultured to listen to other forms of music and artists that influenced you when you were DJ's. I would've never known about My Bloody Valentine. New Order, Ed's reggae 45's, 12 inch balearic, and amongst other music that got me hooked through you guys!

Your music has given me so much fulfillment, yet your sound reflects my times and memories of joy and happiness (Surrender, No Geography, etc) And when times are not so good, I pull out your records to help me dissolve the pain (Star Guitar, Got To Keep On, Chemical Beats) And when you come to California for the live shows, it's a miracle and a lifesaver to me!

But Sunday night was definitely the cherry on top! And in retrospect, from the first Chemical Brothers Cd I bought, to finally meeting you face to face, it's a grand moment where everything comes full circle. I'm still in disbelief, yet so honored of finally meeting you both. Do you know how much that means to me? I'm happy to always have a show of support for you both through albums, live shows, streaming, shirts, etc.

In closing, I'm very lucky to say that you changed my life. Thank you once again for allowing me the opportunity to finally say thank you personally after all these years.

From the bottom of my heart, I love you guys, and thank you for always watching each other and sticking together after all these years.

Holy crap, Inchem! You have such a vivid memory, well done!

And what a treat to rub elbows with Tom and Ed! I'm so happy for you! So incredibly deserved for a loyal and dedicated fan such as yourself.

Your review/recap has me amped for the weekend and already dreaming about the next show!

In your video above at 1:05 we can see Benedict Wong who I guess is kind of a big deal these days thanks to to the Dr Strange films.

In the "making of" video below for the I'll See You There visuals, we also see Benedict Wong. So I think it's the same actors and visuals, perhaps given a slight "remix" for Dreamin'.

Incidentally, in the same way that EML Ritual's visuals were basically a remake of a scene from  Truffaut's The 400 Blows, so these visual seem to be a remake of Kenneth Anger's The Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome:

Holy mother of a review, inchemwetrust! Thank you for the play-by-play capture of events you relayed so well. And Ryno's vivid and emotional take, as well as ALL the reviews from everyone - I've read through this thread many times, holding onto that weekend as we're back to the daily grind now. Thank you, these reviews are such a joy to read and look back on! ❤️ :music

Thoughts?

bumping this. I know there is a semi-public ftp by our own Ben_j, but maybe we should go a bit more public with this?

Furthermore, did our live recording hero BoldCaptain make any of these 2022 US shows?

Right on. More than happy to bring this forward. Would love to help out or take the lead. I'm not a web person but think it could be very wiki oriented and organized in fashion by year / tour along with flyers, set list, venue, recordings, any additional info we can come up with. Our fan base is strong and I'm sure we have a lot of these things already in our possession for more of the already collected sets. Let me know what I can do.

Attaching my first flyer / ticket.

Love the stub and flyer!

Actually, there was an attempt at a wiki (https://forum.thechembase.com/index.php/topic,354.0.html) by a former forum member, Whitenoise, that lost momentum. It was recently brought back to attention this summer and supposedly was placed in charged of another forum member, Zesty. Whether this a current work in progress, I don't know...

As for myself, I have an unofficial list of  dates they have done in North America (https://forum.thechembase.com/index.php/topic,212.0.html). This is mostly me entertaining my unhealthy obsession of predicting and understanding their scheduling. Most of these dates can be confirmed by searching the bowels of the internet, but some are unconfirmed (Hawaii date being one). But I also created the thread because I figured it would be a good spot for people to tell their stories from shows of old, and share goodies like your tour flyer and ticket stub. Hope if anything people can learn from this list is, if you're truly honest about seeing them, don't hesitate. Dates are getting fewer and father between.

So anyways about your proposed idea... I'm not the guy to take the lead of any greater project, but I'm willing to contribute were I can.

I don't know how kosher this is but I created a cue sheet for the portola recording that is floating around.

of course this raises interesting questions of what is considered a 'track' but I decided to go by the setlist.fm listing assuming that someone else has done that work for me already. then there is the task of determining where each track begins, which we could probably debate for hours, but this is where to my ear I would expect each track start if I were to jump straight to it. I also tried including the come with us intro and pause before escape velocity as pre-gaps, which I'm still debating the merits of.

anyway I figured I'd share, definitely open to feedback if anyone tries it out.
