Title: Soulwax / 2Many DJs
Post by: Ben_j on Jan 28, 2016, 00:30
Skyscraper was asking if we should have a Soulwax topic, and I think we do ! They deserve their own topic :D

So I'll just copy/paste what I posted in the other topic regarding the Belgica OST they're doing

Quote from: Skyscraper on Jan 27, 2016, 16:00

Didn't know whwere to put this. Should we maybe have a Soulwax/2ManyDJs/Despacio thread?
Maybe the Daweles need to put out a new album to merit that...

https://twitter.com/essentialmix/status/692373887619829760

(didn't embed because of emojis.)

As a matter of fact, they're releasing an original soundtrack for this movie next month

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oz1yQcfEGX4

Fist track :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=go_vHBtENVI

Sounds like the "regular" Soulwax, and not so much nite version :(

EDIT : I see in the tracklist that they put "Turn Off the Lights" ! They've been playing that track in their live sets for a while
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eMCp5szKhc

Edit bis : they're saying soundtrack in february, and LP in april... So could it be also a brand new Soulwax LP ? Or nite versions of the soundtrack ?

I want them to release the first song (or is it the first two songs) in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_FlwGA6BFY

And while we're at it: A gig in Vienna would be nice. Wouldn't really matter if it's Soulwax, 2ManyDjs or Despacio.

This one is sweet too :

Weirdly, the top video has a 303 (or a clone) playing the acid line and the bottom one has the MS20 playing that same acid riff

So, I just found this reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/soulwax/comments/2vik11/high_quality_soulwax_bootlegs/

Since I love their live shows, does anybody here know about (more) quality bootlegs from Soulwax?
I've found the 2008 Hasselt show (only in 128 kbps but still, holy shit that live version of Get Innocuous!!!), but not the 2007 3voor12 show :-(

Here's the link to the Hasselt set on soundcloud:

Yeah it's an excellent track ! I think everyone here should like it.
Not all the tracks are that great though. Some tracks sound like they were made with the idea of being stereotypes. You've got your basic dub/reggae track (Light Bulb Matrix), your basic punk rock track (Burning Phlegm), the "Jean Michel Jarre" track (Danyel Galaxy), the "Air" track (Robert Vanderwiel), and an almost Led Zep-ish track (Roland McBeth)

Overall, there are enough pure-Soulwax tracks to satisfy me :) My favourites are

Caoutchouc
Turn off The Lights
Ti Ricordi De Me
Got Any Chris Rea?
Inward

Note to Universe:

It's how they call the new show apparently. The videos from the first shows are promising ! More synths, two drummers ! I'll definitely catch them in Paris next month.

EDIT: make that THREE drummers. THREE !

I've seen Soulwax at Rock en Seine for their last gig of the tour. It was pretty great, with a lot of new tracks, that sounded like a mix of the "old" soulwax and the more electro nite versions. Lots of singing, less crazy synth lines.

I really like this new track, the bassline is crazy !

Nice, perfect way to spend the evening.

Speaking of the Dewaele Brothers, at the end of August I was at the Zurich Openair where I was fortunate enough to see both of their bands on one day. First an hour of Soulwax early in the evening and then a 90 minute set of 2many after midnight (with a great performance by Digitalism between, so the day was pretty intense :-D)
Soulwax' set was short but great! The first half was new songs and from their Deewee label, maybe from the Belgica soundtrack, too. Second half was their old classics like NY Excuse, Miserable Girl, E Talking an so forth. Those three drumsets really make an impressive surround effect!
For the DJ set I was expecting mostly their covers and edits with the animated artwork, but it was completely different. No animations (only at the beginning a marching radio soulwax tower and at the end their 2manydj logo) and only very few songs I recognized: Mumbay Sciense with Lotus, their rework of Tame Impala's Let It Happen and something I remembered hearing in their Cherry Moon on Valium work). Anyway, it was an electrifying set, I just couldn't dance as much as I would've liked because of fatigue from already three shows before and two days of sightseeing in Zürich.

Hmm, so they recorded the whole thing in one take on Tuesday this week. OK.

"Transient Drums..." is in the tracklisting. It's fine but not exactly Krack. I hope this is a bit like "The Girl is Mine" preceeding Thriller and the rest is better. Might be best not to expect something as good as Nite Versions though.

Full press release - nicked from Reddit- including a list of some European dates.

SOULWAX ANNOUNCE THE RELEASE OF BRAND NEW STUDIO ALBUM FROM DEEWEE ON MARCH 24

RECORDED IN ONE TAKE ON FEBRUARY 7 AT DEEWEE STUDIO IN GHENT, BELGIUM

Soulwax today announce the release of FROM DEEWEE, a studio album of brand new material. After a period of extensive rehearsals and a level of planning to befit such a huge feat, FROM DEEWEE was recorded with the band in one take at the Dewaele brother's DEEWEE Studio in Ghent, Belgium on February 7 2017 and will be released on March 24. "Based on the 'Transient Program For Drums and Machinery' which began touring in the summer of 2016, we set out to record these songs live with the exact same setup, machines and musicians as we had on the road", say Stephen and David Dewaele of the recording process. As the artwork FROM DEEWEE says.. Playing on this record are Stephen and David Dewaele, Stefaan Van Leuven, Iggor Cavalera, Victoria Smith, Blake Davies and Laima Leyton. The instruments used are two Staccato drumkits, one clear crystalline Meazzi Wooding drumkit, one set of Rototoms, various Hofner bass guitars, a Macbeth M5n, an Oberheim Two-Voice Pro, a Two Thousand Six Hundred copy built by The Human Comparator, one Oberheim OB-Mx, an EMS Synthi AKS, an Arp Odyssey, a TB-303 clone, a Mellotron M4000D, a Sequential Prophet 6, a Waldorf Streichfett, a Burns Sonic guitar, a Vox Phantom guitar, one Syncussion clone built by Loudestwarning, various solid state Roland, Peavey and Acoustic amplifiers and a wide range of effects, all going through three Trident Fleximix consoles, straight into Pro Tools.

In addition to Soulwax, the brothers continue to tour the globe as 2manydjs, have their DEEWEE record label and studio, Radio Soulwax – a visual radio station and app, the Despacio project with James Murphy and their 2 x 2 radio show on Beats 1. Not to mention producing some of the most cutting edge remixes we've seen in recent times for the likes of Warpaint, Tame Impala, Metronomy, Arcade Fire, Daft Punk, Gossip, Hot Chip, MGMT, and many more.

and tracklisting:

    Preset Tense
    Masterplanned
    Missing Wires
    Conditions Of A Shared Belief

Do You Want To Get Into Trouble?
    My Tired Eyes
Transient Program For Drums And Machinery
    Trespassers
The Singer Has Become A Deejay
Here Come The Men In Suits
    Goodnight Transmission

They're using a Macbeth. Isn't that the huge thing that Orbital took on their Wonky tour?
Why a 303 clone rather than original?

Was listening back to the first 2X2 on my phone (YT rip) when I was out this afternoon, and this tune totally jumps out as a highlight from the first hour. Was gonna put it in "now playing", but it's already here. The 12" is hella expensive on Discogs (https://www.discogs.com/Emmanuelle-LUomo-DAffari-Italove/release/8574235)! I think the B-side (this) is better than the A-side.

Listening to the lyrics, I think it's "Here Come The Men In Suits". And this one below seems to be "Masterplanned":

Before we all get excited/disappointed about "From Deewee" on Friday, has anyone listened to the full Belgica soundtrack? Is it good?
It's getting a double LP release for Record Store Day (http://recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-releases/rsd-2017/soulwax/)

I enjoyed it a lot. Some tracks definitely stand out more than others - and it's obviously designed to be a broad display of different genres - but it's very Soulwaxy in places and straight up good in others.

As stated by Enjoyed, some of the tracks that sound typical Soulwax are really good (Turn of the lights, Ti Ricordi di me, Got Any Chris Rea, Cybernetic Permutations In The Key Of A, Inward). The rest is not all good, but some of the tracks that I didn't like on the album were much better in the movie, where they are played live.
The movie itself it worth seeing too, by the way !

Thanks chaps. I probably won't get suckered by Record Store day sillyness and just get the CD. Is there a "pre-gap" bonus track I wonder?

As for the film, I believe it has only been released in Belgium and France so far. I can't find a release date for the rest of the world. If only the discussion boards on IMDB hadn't been binned...

I know that there is a pre-gap track on From Dewee but I don't think I've heard it. Just heard the 12 tracks listed on Amazon etc. The album has now leaked.
First impressions: Unsurprisingly, it's no Nite Versions, but there are plenty of recognisable Soulwaxy synth sounds and even some (fucked up) "oohs".
Fave tunes so far: Masterplanned, Missing Wires and Is It Always Binary (with the "Oohs"). Trespassers stands out beacause it's like an old school pop/rock SWX track rather than electronic.

After a first listen, the ones that stand out for me are :
Masterplanned (dat' bass...)
Missing Wires
Is it always Binary
The Singer Has Become a Deejay / Here come the Men in Suits (I feel like the first one is a big intro for the second one. And it's my favourite part of the album)

^Great minds think alike with the first three choices.
Incidentally I have also realised that six of the twelve tracks are already on Spotify, and they have been for at least a week. D'oh!

Unfortunately I'm not really in love with the new album.

There are some good tracks on it, but even the good tracks aren't *great*.

I certainly love that the Dewaele brothers are still producing music and they're some of the most talented producers/djs in the god damn world. But it seems like they experimented in one direction and didn't quite come up with amazing results, only interesting ones.

Nonetheless, I hope that future listens of the album will bring some further appreciation. I certainly haven't ruled it out for finding something better in it down the line. And I'll keep an eye out for them performing--I think the live aspect has a lot to do with the album. That kind of goes for Soulwax in general.

Jealous that you get to see them in Paris!

Speaking of Soulwax (on another thread), when the album came out, was I the only one who thought they had borrowed a melodic idea from Beyond The Wizards Sleeve?
Namely the little melody at around 3.15 on this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0tpdC2u78Q

Reminds me of the "ooohs" on track one of The Soft Bounce, Delicious Light (//http://spotify:track:3aUCsu7LifOSLDDsatVjrd) (hm, this Spotify link isn't working, but you can find it there anyway).
I can only find a remix of Delicious Light on YT, although you can kinda hear it here too.

Quote
Soulwax's Christmas Desert Island Disco

It's Lauren's last show of 2017, so we mark the occasion with some favourite tunes and moments, and a festive mix from Soulwax.

Since the creation of Soulwax in 1995, David and Stephen Dewaele have consistently pushed the boundaries into new and innovative territory. In addition to Soulwax, the brothers continue to tour the globe as 2manydjs, have their DEEWEE record label and studio, Radio Soulwax - a visual radio station and app, and the Despacio project with James Murphy.

Their last album, FROM DEEWEE, was recorded with their band in one take at their studio in Ghent, Belgium. They played in session for 6 Music at Maida Vale earlier this year and, of late, we've been thoroughly enjoying the beat-filled beast of a track that is Is It Always Binary?

The Soulwax brothers follow in the footsteps of The Chemical Brothers, who shared their Ghosts Of Christmas Past, Present and Future mix in 2015.

This is funny. Going for a 1980's Top Of The Pops vibe. I reckon the presenter dude is meant to be a cross between Radio 1 DJs Mike Read and Peter Powell. They even have the 1980's Radio 1 logo at the end.

https://twitter.com/soulwax/status/1010093490032783360

Essential is out today. (http://smarturl.it/soulwaxessential)

PS: Isn't it funny how Soulwax left a gap of about 12 years between Nite Versions and From Dewee, but then managed to create Essential in two weeks whilst From Dewee was still a current album? It's almost as though they just needed a good kick up the arse to make a new album.

I'm trying to figure out the differences beetween the original radio version (mixed) and today's album which is unmixed. 14 tracks Vs 12 tracks. What's missing?

The only extra music I can ID so far (from the original Radio 1 mix) is right at the end.
Using the mixcloud HERE (http://corenews.me/soulwax-essential-mix-2017-05-20/), the track that plays from 54.15 to 56.40 is called "Essential 12" on today's album release, so it's the last track on the album. Therefore the music from 56.41 to the end of the mix (1hr,44secs) is not on today's album release. That's four minutes of music which, I believe, is one track.
So that appears to account for one of the two missing tracks. I have no idea where the other missing music is. If in fact, there is any. I wonder if they re-calibrated the tracks so that two tracks from the original mix have been smooshed into one track on today's album release?

It doesn't help that the album release is unmixed whilst the essential mix was obviously mixed. So the track timings are different (you also have to ignore the opening 1.46 on the mixcloud which is just Pete Tong shizzle).

I tried checking Radio 1's page (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08q3223) which has little preview clips. Except the clips for Essential 1-14 are actually all the same clip ("Essential 5", going by today's release) so that didn't help.

In fact I wonder if Radio 1 completely f***ed up. Perhaps there were only 13 music tracks and they counted the "Hello this is Soulwax" intro as a separate track (it's part of Track 1 on the album). Having said that, I know Radio 1 lists that intro as separate from Essential 1-14 but maybe they also counted it as Essential 1.

TL;DR? I reckon the original Radio 1 mix actually had 13 music tracks, not 14. One track is missing from today's album release: the final four minutes of the (first hour of) the Radio 1 Essential Mix.

Essential 13 and 14 were a track they've been playing live for a few years. I guess it's the only one they didn't create for the Essential Mix and therefore doesn't belong with the rest of the album. Still, it's a shame as it was my favourite track of the mix and has been haunting me ever since Soulwaxmas 2012 :

The songwriting is a bit limited, but to be hit by an hour of Soulwax grooves (and they're diferent from From Dewee as they used all their instruments that they didn't use for that album) is like a Dyson dryer to the face.

In fact I still have the Soulwax/Myspace T-shirt they handed out on the night. I also went to a premier of this documentary here in San Francisco back in 2008, also followed by a Soulwax performance.

I remember the screening felt a little weird--everyone was there standing around watching the documentary, getting excited at the footage of Soulwax performing live, but then being impatient and really just wanting to see Soulwax perform. Despite this, it was nonetheless really cool to see the documentary and also to be able to see Soulwax perform that night.

I miss the Soulwax from the Nite Versions days.

But they still are just so impressive as artists, and it's clear they keep pushing their own boundaries.

Not the most groundbreaking Soulwax remix but it's also (kinda) something new from Jungle.

Jungle have a new album out next month. It's the first album I've considered pre-ordering since No Geography. I've been loving the video series they've been putting out with the dancers in the school building - that band has their shit together.

Little interesting crossover... The Blessed Madonna remixed a recent single of theirs - Keep Moving. It's a great slab of disco dub.

EDIT: Thought this was in the Now Playing thread. Sorry for the Jungle takeover.
The Soulwax remix was nice! Kinda felt like Soulwax feat. Jungle, which I enjoyed very much.

I ended up getting a used cd copy instead of the reissue. will rip it this evening and go down memory lane.

Soulwax created the score for a new expansion of GTA online:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cP6CQMAPEQ4

Apparently it will be a full album? Hopefully the music will be available as a standalone, I really like what I've heard so far :)

Track 6 uses some previously unreleased material that was played years ago during their Soulwaxmas events, I've always loved that bootleg:

Love this track from the Essential Mix. Love the EM speed compared to the above pitched up Youtube version.

Found a connection via the Essential Mix and digging in to past posts on the forum.

Csar posted in the covered chemicals topic (https://forum.thechembase.com/index.php/topic,238.msg25485.html#msg25485) of the cover of Base 6 by Yuki and Yuna of CHAI.

2ManyDjs use the following CHAI track early in the mix and I love CHAI now.

Ha! Yeah this is great.
"Hey I asked y'all not to stand on top of the speakers. Y'all hard-headed or wut?"
Spoiler
And also "We've got Colt 45 and Miller...30c a glass". I remember Colt 45 beer from when I was a kid. They tried to get a foothold in the Irish beer market back when everybody drank Guinness and Smithwicks. They didn't succceed, but the ads were on the side of every bus in Dublin for a while.

I don't know where the Dewaele's got those vocal clips from but they weren't on the original release of Love Attack (https://www.discogs.com/master/25098-Ferrara-Shake-It-Baby-Love-Love-Attack) that came out in 1979.

I think the mix really gets going with this Ferrara track, so maybe the intro to this mix isn't quite as exciting an the intro to "As Heard on Radio Soulwax pt2". I hope the opening couple of minutes don't put people off. Because overall, it's fantastic!

Found a [Chemical] connection via the Essential Mix...
Oh I think I found some more:
1) Sharif Laffrey - And Dance (1hr,04) was in the Chems 2019 Essential Mix.
2) D.H.S. – House Of God (mixed with Tiga's Easy) at 1hr,11. The Chems had another track from the same House Of God EP - "Holophonic Sound", in their 2019 Mix.
3) Pygmy Music. Around 50 mins. The Chems sampled Mbola from Aka Pygmies in MAH, and I'm pretty sure these are Pygmy vocals here.

In terms of iconic mash-ups, I'm not sure there's anything here that will stand out as much as say, Iggy & The Stooges w/ Salt N' Pepa or Detroit Grand Pubahs w/ New Order, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty here to enjoy.
For example, the bit around 1hr30: D-Mob– We Call It Acieed/KiNK – Disco Spectrum/Wet Leg – Too Late Now (Soulwax Remix), it all fits together so damn well.
The aforementioned mix of Tiga and DHS works nicely too. There's lots of great stuff here.
"As Heard..." was about an hour long and had 45 tracks. This mix is twice as long and has twice as many tracks.

Well I hope this Essential Mix gets a wider release at some point.
"As Heard... (pt.1)" started life as a Hang The DJ mix for Belgian radio (AFAIK), before getting a (re-jigged) release as "part 2"
The Soulwax Essential (1-12) (https://www.discogs.com/master/1382325-Soulwax-Essential) album started life as an Essential Mix for the BBC before getting an official release.
So it would be great to see this Essential Mix get a proper release too (track clearances permitting).

Inidentally, I noticed little snippets of the "Essential" Soulwax vocals pop up at around 22 mins, 1hr,10, 1hr,36 and 1hr,51 here. A nice nod to the Daewale brothers previous Essential Mix.

A couple of people have uploaded it to YouTube, which may be of interest to those geo-blocked by the BBC. The one below has little (or no?) advertising.
The one under the spoiler tabs has annoying ads but also has a free M4a dowload in the YT description. Both uploads have attempted tracklistings in their descriptions.

Don't know if this was mentioned before anywhere, but i just found out that the Soulwax remix of HBHG on Youtube has the original vocals from that tune instead of the "hey boy, hey girl, 2manydjs, here we go" lyrics. Maybe this is the real deal and i just got some not so official version on my harddrive, but until now i only knew the 2manydjs-lyric version. 🤷

Hm, the version of the Surrender Deluxe edition also has the original lyrics, so this will be the official version.
I think the "HBHG 2manyDJs, here we go"-version is an edit that 2manydjs use when DJing?

Speaking of Soulwax, they just announced some tour dates:

So the version i have (as mp3) is called "Hey Boy Hey Girl (Soulwax '2 Many DJ's' Remix)" and in the tags it says that it is from the Midnight Madness single. Quick look into Discogs is saying there are two versions of the MM-single that have the Soulwax-remix on it => This (https://www.discogs.com/de/release/3484802-The-Chemical-Brothers-Midnight-Madness) and this (https://www.discogs.com/de/release/1891624-The-Chemical-Brothers-Midnight-Madness). The mp3 has a runtime of 7:08 which is 6 seconds shorter than the one behind the first link 27 seconds shorter than the one behind the second link. Yes, you are right, the version from the Surrender Anniversary Edition is the one with original vocal sample, and because i only own this version (https://www.discogs.com/de/release/1424215-The-Chemical-Brothers-Midnight-Madness) of the MM-single i can't check what version is on the other two single-releases + i have no idea where i have that remix from. The remix itself doesn't sound like the begining or the end are edited.

Well you may have to share your 7:08 edit with us!

I've got this (https://www.discogs.com/release/1460290-The-Chemical-Brothers-Hey-Boy-Hey-Girl-Soulwax-Remix) official CDr of the track. It has the original lyrics so I think it's the same as the Surrender20 version. The tracklist says 7:15 but the CD player says 7:14.
I've also just whacked the (bootleg) Most Of The Other Remixes (https://www.discogs.com/release/1669987-Soulwax-Most-Of-The-Other-Remixes-They-Have-Made-For-Other-People-Over-The-Years-That-They-Did-Not-I) CD into my stereo and that too has the 'normal' lyrics.
If I were a betting man, I'd bet that the 7:35 time on your Astralwerks CDr link is a mistake.

Oh and somewhere in my sprawling CD collection I have the Mixmag Part Of NYE Never Dies (https://www.discogs.com/release/1568479-Soulwax-Part-Of-NYE-Never-Dies) mix. Now that does have your "2ManyDJs" lyrics in it, but it's not the full track. Discogs says you get 2:44 of the track here, although I reckon it's more like 3:54. You can listen below. Also I note there are some additional sounds spliced in from about 1:29 onwards. I wonder if that's the same as yours? I suspect your version came from a Soulwax source, or alternatively: someone took this Mixmag version and spliced it with the original to make a (more or less) "full length" version of 7:08.

Well thanks for that Pum. After my last post above, my thoughts were that the only place I've ever heard the "altered vocal" version of HBHG is on the above Mixmag CD. Your version certainly sounds very "clean" i.e. it hasn't obviously bastardized the Mixmag version.

I note in the properties of the file it says: Encoded by: iTunes v7.7.1.11. But I guess it would be an M4A file if you had got it from iTunes, so I'm probably not helping.

Regarding the track length, the first "Hey Girl" in the Surrender20 version is around 0.39 secs. Here, the first "Hey Girl" is around 0.32 secs, so I guess that's the difference in runtime accounted for.

2manydjs Mini Portola review
HOLY SHIT!
I haven't peaked like that for years.
Full on bang session every track.
Everyone around me in synch. Even the three small south Asian girls who I didn't expect to, they brought it.
No ear protection here please. I need full force.
I'm in time for (almost) all.
Screens don't work for five minutes. That's okay, I don't need them to bang.
"Stooges/Dog" worried I'm only one going off. See a few others, but skepti...
"New song?/def jam beastie" Bring the Bass and the crowd!!!! Arrival happened and it's glorious.
"I Need Someone" synch with pink bucket bro.
"Vroom/Ferrari record" "Tiga/Hudson Mohawke" remember later.
"Pump Up The Jam" remix was cheese that I can finally enjoy.
Never knew "Voulez Vouz" would be needed in my life.
Wetleg, you are now appreciated.
"Work it" was up to the sky on different levels.
"Cliche" drop 1...whoops ryno, try again. Drop 2, Perfect Landing with the bag thumb holds into pogo spins in line with the revelers. Best drop of weekend.
"Tequila" you made me dance like my dad in his uni days. Well played.
