I wonder if unreleased tracks will be on here as well. Very curious and hope if they made another version of let forever be, music response, etc. Im pretty sure the bsides from surrender will be on here as well. I do want a longer version of TSU! I can dream can I?
And Surrender has it's anniversary in June I think! This is gonna be huge!

"Ah shit, I'm late for work"
I kid you not, last night I dreamt about asking Tom in a Q&A about whether we could get to hear some alternate versions of a track. My subconscious mind was probably stimulated by the discussion about early works of No Geography and some editing of the 2016 Q&A thread I had done before going to bed.
How much fun would it be if they released an alternate album of any of their catalogue?
Great to see Ed sitting down for interviews again and that he's in good spirits!

I'll try to track down the interview regarding it soon, but a more "chilled out" version of Surrender was more or less completed in 1998 - Tom and Ed are always responding against something, often against what the last album was, and it was meant to contrast against how hard Dig Your Own Hole was. They weren't satisfied with it though and Surrender became what we know now.
Second kitten killed but I guess this is why Music: Response (Live from Orinoco Studios) surfaced on the Essential Mix! Discovered while digging behind the couch!

Ooh, that would be fun to read!
But even if they weren't satisfied with the all-mellow approach, you definately can hear that it influenced Surrender heavily as it is a much more complex and multi-faceted record than DYH.
verily looking forward to this.!
A second big release this year?!?
I'm pretty excited if this is really happening.
Would be cool to see if Kate Gibb can contribute in some way being that her artwork throughout this era is so highly praised.
I could also see Anti Nazi version of Hey Boy Hey Girl being part of this.

Well, wiki says June 21 is the big date, so I think there's enough cushion and room for NG and the tour itself to breathe. Maybe the chems will keep the surrender anniversary album lowkey till june arrives.

They don't necesarily have to be attached to the official date of anniversary. Maybe just announce a pre-sale/ item description on the June 21st and go onwards from there.
Either way, I hope we don't have to buy from Astralwerks.

Give me all of the Surrender era b-sides on a disc with alternate versions. I'd love to have all of Kate Gibbs artwork including unused art in a book. Do something like Underworld's Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Second Toughest In The Infants, and Beaucoup Fish boxset reissues. A full live show from this era would also be cool to included. I'll by a 4 or 5 or 6 disc Surrender boxset ;D

Yeah, I did the same. View page source and grabbed whatever Chem art she had up.
I hope this is true! I am well prepared to spend silly money on any box set that might come our way.
However to me it would not seem to make sense to release a box set in the year they are promoting No Geography. Maybe a box set would make more sense next year for the 21st anniversary. I hope I'm wrong though.

Be cool if the Chems sell a Surrender art print when they put the boxset up.
I do hope that the boxset comes with a book of every Surrender Kate Gibb art. From the singles artwork to unused pieces. Would make an amazing art book. Underworld did a great job with this for their reissues. They came with a vinyl sized book. The Smashing Pumpkins did something similar with their Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness boxset.
Wasn't it Ed who poo-pooed the idea of ever doing a live film, and then we wound up getting one like 5 years later?
Now with this, this is something he said that came unprovoked. I think it's definitely in their plans, just not sure when.

Tom in 2002:
"The Chemical Brothers is not the route to doing something else.
It's not like I'm doing this so one day I'll be able to do a film score or something. This is it. This is enough. This is everything we want right here."
And hell weren't they just a few years ago against the idea of a box set or a "backward looking" release? Hence why Dig Your Own Hole got a vinyl repress, a few b-sides added to Spotify, and that's it.
They basically confirmed this (I think) on the Zane Lowe interview that is going down right now . I just tuned in and they were talking about Surrender, Tom just mentioned it's gonna be "20 years" since its release and Zane Lowe said something to the effect "no looking back" and Tom and Ed agreed, until Tom corrected himself and said on this one, I guess we are for the first time.
They didn't really go into detail after that. Need to re-listen to interview (not really an interview, more like just a conversation between old acquaintances, Zane Lowe being a bit of a nutter).
Zane giving Ed hell about "Fag break" :))

I also hope this includes the Surrender era b-sides as well.
It seems the 3LP is actually 3CD and a mistype as a news story about this release said 3CD. A 3LP and a 4LP seems odd to me. 4LP will be 2LP album and 2LP of bonus material.

QuoteGreetings Chemical Brothers and Sisters!
The Chemical Brothers follow the release of their hugely acclaimed ninth album No Geography with the announcement of their biggest ever UK headline show, as well as a new single and details of the first ever deluxe reissue of an album from their back catalogue.
Following the band's recent All Points East headline show, the band have announced a gig at London's O2 Arena on November 30th 2019. Tickets are on sale from Friday14th June; a pre-sale starts on Wednesday 12th June for O2 customers and fans signed up to the band's mailing list. All other UK and other dates are already on sale.
Eve Of Destruction is the opening track on No Geography and has been a staple of the band's DJ sets for the last two years. A relentless groove that gives way to a jacking house chorus, it features vocals from Norwegian singer Aurora andJapanese rapper Nene. The single is released ahead of their headline slot at Glastonbury Festival this month; a stunning visual for the track has been created by the band's longterm collaborators Adam Smith and Marcus Lyall. watch it now:

It'd be cool if there was some track by track commentary like they did for DYOH on BBC, but maybe the book will have additional details. I guess too we have the CD-ROM of Music: Response.
Also, I wonder if the original album had been remastered or tweaked in any way? There's no mention of it, so I'd assume it'll be identical. I'm fine with that sine the promo copy of Surrender I've been using is starting to show it's age...

Hm, yeah, with their announcement of Flashback Friday, I thought they would remaster these videos too. But maybe videos of that era where mainly shot on SD cameras instead of film (pretty sure that applies to the Glasto set). If that were the case (like probably HBHG as they used CGI for the skeletons), HD would be impossible.
I wonder if the LP version will have a download card?
The 21 minute mix of OOC will be the longest Chems track ever released publicly. Given that none of the psychedelic mixes are even longer.

Yes! I really want to see what prints they chose as well.
definitely checks my boxes:
1) TPM on its own disc (looking forward to Flashback and LFB version)/OOC 21 min
2) Art book

In case I order the box do I get a message whether I receive the "extremely limited pressing of the original Electronic BattleWeapon 3 & 4 on coloured 10" vinyl" for free or do I have to add it to my basket and pay as it's the same as the one that can be obtained separately?

If they were going to do them all, wouldn't they have started with Exit?

4) DVD but why does Glasto DVD have 7 tracks from the show? Im sure they did more!
Glastonbury 2000 Setlist:
01 Hey Boy Hey Girl
02 Music: Response
03 Block Rockin' Beats
04 Song to the Siren
05 Under the Influence
06 It Doesn't Matter
07 Out Of Control
08 Elektrobank
09 Got Glint?
10 The Sunshine Underground
11 Setting Sun
12 Chemical Beats
12 Leave Home
13 The Private Psychedelic Reel
I much rather have audio of a full show than a DVD with half a show. I hate it when bands do this. Here's to hoping the DVD audio is lossless at least. What's even weirder is cutting out the Surrender tracks performed for material from other albums.

Well, they haven't been pro-"looking back" in the last five years until recently, and (for whatever reason) it seems like ya need an excuse like an anniversary to issue something like this. So Surrender ended up being the closest one to their change of heart. Maybe next year we get an Exit 25th anni, in 2022 a DYOH and/or Come With Us 25th and 20th anni. Who knows.
People will buy em though, that's for sure!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think video only exists for those 7 tracks and they're probably not interested in releasing audio only.
One could stitch together an almost complete recording of the audio of Glastonbury 2000 theoretically though
1-5: will be on DVD
7-9: exist on the Music: Response single
10 and 12: floating around out there, most easily found on the unofficial Live Singles 95-05 bootleg
11: supposedly exists on a Russian bootleg, haven't heard it
13 and 14: will be on DVD
Only It Doesn't Matter is missing
secret psychedelic mixes..🤤
pre-ordered 4LP
hope I get the ebw3/ebw4
edit: i am an idiot, I also just ordered that as well haha
So, that 21mn version of Out of Control... I reckon it will sound like something in between OOC and Enjoyed, and have that WATN intro sound

I believe you have to order the EBWs separately. They're just limited in number. The earlier you order the greater the chance of getting one.
I'm curious what the footnoe "(subject to change and addition)" might entail since there's plenty of time until its release.
Quote from: Csar on Jun 10, 2019, 18:52Hm, yeah, with their announcement of Flashback Friday, I thought they would remaster these videos too. But maybe videos of that era where mainly shot on SD cameras instead of film (pretty sure that applies to the Glasto set). If that were the case (like probably HBHG as they used CGI for the skeletons), HD would be impossible.
SD video doesn't mean that it only can be putted to DVD, and HD video doesn't mean that it only can be putted to BluRay.
Regardless of video resolution, there are different codecs.
DVD - is format, and it's only with MPEG-2 codec, that in year 2019 is not-practical.
BluRay - is format with three possible codecs: MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC, VC-1, which are also very outdated.
The best option is to get original raw SD video and encode it with AVC H.264/HEVC H.265 and put this material to a flash drive. Also a download code will be fine too.

It's a shame it's not the full set, but I guess it wasn't fully filmed - can't have what does not exist!
Still very excited but what will be on the video. The BBC never broadcast song to the siren, under the influence and leave home back in 1999 so this is a great bonus. It would be nice if they could get a couple more live tracks on there, the sunshine underground, flashback and got glint. Obviously there is the Woodstock recording although this recording is not exactly the greatest footage
As if £85 quid wasn't enough, adding the EBW 10" to my cart with the 4LP brings postage to Australia to £38!!
No thanks. Hoping that the Australian Universal store sells this or Juno ends up with the leftovers.
I can't even imagine what 21 minutes of madness sounds like!
I'm really looking forward to the live footage, and the essay and artwork. Hell, I'm looking forward to all of it!

☹️..anybody got any thoughts on north american pre-orders..?
https://store.udiscovermusic.com/*/The-Chemical-Brothers-Surrender-20th-Anniversary/
through here it seems they're not bundled
(however, it seems they're not selling EBW 3&4 separately anymore. given the press release, it sounds like that original listing was an error?)

I haven't seen any info come up yet, but it ended up being cheaper to order the BITE 3LP and the Free Yourself/MAH 12" from the UK site shipping to Canada at the time of each release. That's what I'll end up doing I think.
It would be nice to have a significant line of communication on the forum with someone in the marketing department of these physical releases. We have enough fan dedication to get the details correct and pass on the correct information. I really don't see the harm of giving us a little more transparency on releases like this. We're here to help!
I must be the forum drunk, because the first thing I thought about when I heard about an 'Out of Control' track which was 21 minutes in length, was it seems like a prime drinking game.

yes please.
I think im gonna wait until all of this gets settled before I pull the trigger in buying this.
yep...EBW's are gone now!!!
should I preorder from uDiscover or is there a more reliable site I can preorder from?
I don't see anything on amazon just yet.
Yet another marketing disaster, and again an avoidable one too. The German webstore from Universal gives you all options but doesn't provide any information on what these options comprise. No mention of Gibb artwork though.
https://store.universal-music.de/p50-a157295/the-chemical-brothers/index.html?onChangeLanguage=1&language_id=DE
Whereas the official Chembros link to Universal dot com, like Toxic said, shows now only bundles (but now inlcuding EBW 3/4).
Is it that hard to sort out the specifics first, communicate that to all vendors, and then promote it?
What the hell are they doing??
Oh man, this is turning into a clusterfuck.
So now on the Chem Bros store, the bundles aren't even consistent in their additional pricing for the EBWs.
4LP has added 15 quid onto the original 85 quid price.
3CD has added 12 quid onto original 40 quid price.
On the official store, you currently have no choice but to get the EBWs - which means if someone outside the UK wants to order the 3CD, you HAVE to get the EBWs, and that bumps the postage price (to Australia, for example) from 7 pounds to 30 pounds!
I am hoping the 3CD boxset shows up on other sites. I don't need the EBW vinyl.
This is so confusing.
I wanted the EBW vinyl, but only had the link to store.udiscovermusic.com given in the press release. The EBW stand alone option was gone by the time I was ready to order, but I read that if you ordered the 4LP early, you would have a "chance" of getting one sent with your order, so I ordered the 4LP.
Now I see you all saying they're selling bundles of the 4LP with the EBW on store.thechemicalbrothers.com.
I don't know if I should cancel my original store.udiscovermusic.com order and place a new store.thechemicalbrothers.com order to get the bundle with the EBW. Nothing is assuring me that I'll get the EBW as-is though.
I'm not happy with my No Geography order due to the digital downloads issue and now this...
So if I ordered soon enough, is the 10" getting shipped with my 3cd/1dvd set? I'm so confused.
I'm also confused. I'm in America but the Universal Music Store shows everything in GBP... I tried going to the site through a VPN but no change. I can swap to Euros... but that doesn't help either.
Do I have to buy stuff through "udiscovermusic" website? That one has no mention of the EBWs (which I really would like, very much), but the boxset is much cheaper than on the GBP/UK site ($50 instead of £52 - $66 ish).
udiscover gives no details either. Like, none.
Currently, it looks like the EBW bundles are only available through the Chemical Brothers official store.
https://store.thechemicalbrothers.com
The link in the story on the home page of their website, doesn't even link to the official store, but to the Universal Music store, where the bundles are not available and no mention of an EBW is made!
https://TheChemicalBrothers.lnk.to/Surrender20
You can buy the Surrender box sets without any EBW, bundled or seperate, through the Universal Music Store:
I doubt if you ordered before the bundles appeared that you will get the EBW disc included with your order. The initial article certainly made it sound like the EBW disc was going to be a free bonus, but if they make you pay for it in a bundle, it's not really a "bonus", is it?
Also, imagine if you ordered for 85 pounds from the Universal Store and got the EBW disc, why would they have a listing on the official store for the bundle for 15 quid more...??
I'm kinda freaking annoyed. I linked to the US Universal store from the freaking link that was posted from their freaking facebook page. The press release literally stated, "The first copies preordered will receive an extremely limited pressing of the original Electronic BattleWeapon 3 & 4 on coloured 10" vinyl." Happy to be getting cd/dvd box but wtf???
is Udiscover a reliable site to preorder from (especially in the U.S.?) or should I wait for somewhere else like amazon?

It still appears for sale for me on official store
I just ordered the "bundle". It showed in my basket as Geoff has it above. The 3CD + DVD + EBW 3+4... Except for when I got my confirmation, and it looks like this:
Not to hijack/distract from the EBW 3/4 issues, but I wonder if the new bonus mixes are going to sound like Studio K. I was listening to the DYOH radio commentary and it sounds like a lot of their workflow was these sort of long jams that are edited down into a neat, tidy package. Studio K sounds very much like it could've just been a jam track they put on the single.
I actually do have a complaint:
No Orange Wedge 21 minutes of madness version?
Is there a layaway option? My gawd, the shipping is absolutely crippling.
There is now the option on the Chem Bros official store to buy just Surrender without the EBW bundled in. Also the Universal Store has added the EBW bundles.
So if you want the 3CD and 4LP you aren't forced to buy the EBWs twice.
It's 3 quid cheaper to buy the 4LP with the 3CD+EBW bundle than it is to buy the 4LP+EBW bundle with the 3CD (???)
Decided to just order off of the official site.

So I had already preordered through the link I got (which was Universal). This is the ONLY time I have EVER preordered an album and the ONLY reason I did was to get the EBW 10." If I'm not getting it, I'm going to be extremely freaking pissed.
I doubt you get it in case you ordered before the bundles appeared. It was clearly a mistake to offer the boxes and the single seperately and the single was never meant as a free gift for box set buyers though the press release implied that. I'd cancel the order and buy a bundle if you want the EBW 10".
Keep in mind, not only do you have to pay 12/15 quid extra for the 10" in the bundle, it also bumps up your postage cost as well by a few quid.
I'd say this launch has well and truly been bungled by Universal Music. Misleading communication.
Can I cancel? I ordered Monday afternoon. And if I canceled my Universal order and ordered through the Chem's shop with the bundle, would it still be available? And also, didn't they say it was supposed to be included with an early enough purchase?
I'm sure you can cancel. Check their T&C's
If you're afraid to end up without the 10": buy the bundle simultaneously through the Chem's store.
The press release stated that you have a chance to get it if you order the box early. Which lead people to believe it would be added as a gift. But it simply referred to the the possibility to buy a bundle (which were not available at that time due to a mistake) as long as the 10"es aren't sold out. The 10" was never meant to be a free gift for early-purchasers.
If you want to cancel your uDiscover order, there's a form to submit on this page: https://store.udiscovermusic.com/help/ under "PLACING & CANCELLING ORDERS > How do I cancel my order?"
To throw a spanner in the works, I emailed uDiscovermusic asking about the wording of a bonus 10" disc and whether it would be included in the preorder of the 4LP for £85 and got this response:
QuoteThank you for your message.
After escalating your query I can conform your order will contain the extra Electronic Battle Weapon 3 & 4 on coloured 10" vinyl.
We hope you place an order with us soon.
If we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Did you place your order while the 10"es were still available separately and no bundles online?
If that's the case, than that's really good customer service.
No, hadn't ordered, but my question was framed that way, asking if I ordered in the future. I'm not sure what's going on.
In that case I doubt that the answer is correct: why should the £85 4LP box include the 10" when there's a £100 4LP + 10" bundle?

The Kate Gibb prints will be part of both the 3CD+DVD boxset and the 4LP+DVD boxset.
As confirmed by Errol on Facebook.
Has anyone else mentioned the absence of HBHG Extended? I thought for sure that would be included, seeing as there's never been a digital release of that version. I also think it's kinda funny that the Soulwax remix is on there since that was like a decade after the Surrender era.
I feel like I'm being too negative? Just some observations.

Juno has the releases up - the 4LP and 3CD are a bit more than official store prices - but can remove VAT and should also hopefully have much more acceptable international shipping costs too. I can live without the EBWs.
EDIT - also on Amazon Canada and UK too: https://www.amazon.ca/Surrender-20th-Anniversary-4LP-Vinyl/dp/B07TB5V7R3/ref=tmm_vnl_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

Total: £108.20

wow this is pretty messed up. I don't recall why I ended up ordering from, udiscover but they definitely marketed the EBW bonus as "be one of the first to order" not "pay more and only from the official store".
curious if anyone has tried canceling their udiscover order? it appears the set w/ EBW is still available at the official store.
I have been noticing that Kevin Westenberg (photographer from the "Surrender" period) is going through shots that "won't make the cut" (ie. box set book) but are rather great to see again and also his description of the photo shoot itself...

I initially thought the same. The Soulwax version is incredible, but it seems like the rare Australian extended version would be a better fit on this retrospective. And yeah, it's available on CD, but the sound quality of that pressing is lacking in IMO, especially now that we'll have the rest in updated EQ. However, the official site says,"Disc 3 B sides and Remixes as curated by The Chemical Brothers", so apparently Tom and Ed made the call and I'm cool with that.

Which country do you live in? Amazon UK has them available for preorder, and if you don't live in the EU you get another 20% off with VAT removal. However, they still don't ship to Australia, so if you are in Aus best bet will probably be Juno.

But to be fair, place an order via the official web store (85 pound + 23.49 pound postage + 10% GST = 116.99 pound) you're paying AUD$212.. so not that far off.
I would assume there would be a mockup for this box set, or a pic that would visually show what you get when purchased by now
My guess is, if they eventually have a mockup, it will come closer to release date. A detailed mockup would create unnecessary expectations to the final product. That's what I fucking hate about pre-orders. They make sure it's viable before they guarantee any type of quality or aesthetic features.
The truth is, the product is already solid in writing. I think I can say for all of us we are here for "The Secret Psychedelic Mixes", live DVD, and booklet. Everything else can be plain Jane, as long as they don't fuck up those three elements. Is it worth the hefty price tag even with low expectations of aesthetic? Probably not, but we're fans, and fans gotta collect.

They used bits of it in the latest live version of the track. I'm a little bit disapointed as I expected these Secret Psychedelic Mixes to be demo versions. say premiering. We already heard 4+ minutes of it on BBC Radio 1 as per this. (https://forum.thechembase.com/index.php/topic,1885.0.html)
When they say below, "new and unreleased mixes" (plural) I wonder if they mean the KiNK remix plus the psychedelic mix, or could there be more HBHG mixes as well?

Weird, I looked there and didn't see it at first.
I'm very sad 😭
I think it's cool. Glad to get to hear some unearthed material. If it really was an old version of the song, I think it's fun they went back and used it to spice up the current live version.
I never thought that I would live to see the time when Chems will adjust their music according to the EDM and themselves will remix themselves for the sake of youth...

Remix themselves for EDM? What are you talking about? The Psychedelic Mixes are old versions of songs they discovered. They didn't remix HBHG today to make it more EDM. This is an old unreleased mix. If anything, Chems were ahead of the game years ago with these Psychedelic Mixes making what you think is today's EDM music.
They already had EDM producers remixing them. Born In The Echoes had loads of them.
It was a really cool joke, if it was produced in 90's. But.. i don't believe for it

Does it? It sounds like a demo version to me. Reminds me of Camisra from 1998.
I certainly don't see how it sways towards any current trends in electronic music. Feels like it could have been a super early take, the Brothers just trying to get down some ideas built around the acid line and the Roof is on Fire sample.
The Psychedelic Mixes pretty much seem like earlier original uncut jams before they got the solid album structure down. Think of them more like Electronic Battle Weapons.
iTunes has digital pre-order available with track length listed.
The Secret Psychedelic Mixes:
1. Hey Boy Hey Girl - 5:32
2. Let Forever Be - 5:20
3. Out of Control - 21:07
4. Flashback - 5:30
5. Dream On - 4:21

Yeah, definitely sounds more like a rough demo/ studio jam session version with a bit of H.I.A-flavored beats. The only thing that's surprising to me is the attached "psychedelic mix" label as this is anything but really "psychedelic". But either way, it only shows how genius they were in getting back to it and shape it to the track we all know from Surrender which is one of the greatest electro tracks and was so ahead of its time.
Since this is one of the first times we got a proper Chem Bros remaster, I really hope they did a good job on it and I hope there will be a Hi-Res digital edition.

Definitely agree. Not at all what I was expecting or hoping for from this series of "new" mixes so far. Hoping the other ones live up to the name. While it doesn't meet my expectations it's still great to hear "new" Chems!
I already knew the Kink mix wasn't going to be my thing.

I helped somebody find a thread here earlier because they had gone a bit blind (you know who you are!) but now
I seem to have gone blind myself. That Ghost Producers thread seems to have disappeared...?
Nice to know where that extra bit added to HBHG came from. I'd imagine these mixes will sound like Studio K-like versions, since that b-side sounds like it was made in a similar way.

It was just a joke :)
Ok, now that i gave the Psychodelic mix and the Kink remix a couple of spins i would like to trade in both and get the extended version of HBHG
The intro of HBHG Psychedelic mix reminded me of Fatboy's slims remix of 'I See You Baby'. Then, when the 'hi-hat' becomes more prevalent, it has some similarity to Daft Punk's 'Revolution 909'.
The track feels like it's extracted from an actual DJ mix.
Revisiting the original HBHG, it sounds more psychedelic than the self acclaimed "Psychedelic Mix".
My guess is this was never a "Psychedelic" form of the song, but rather a conditioned version that could be dropped in the middle of an action sequence for a film.

Damn you! You really made me look up Chemical Brothers + ghostproducer. Rrrrr. So, I was right all along. The only ghostproducer that works for the Chemical Brothers is Tom Rowlands. He's been ghostproducing for Ed Simons since their inception. Ed Simons then completes the ghostproducing by revising the usually ridiculously long jam sessions and condensing them into digestible lenghts. Exhibit A: Out of Control
This begs the question: How long is the demo version of Escape Velocity?
Technically speaking, would the people they hire to create interpolations be considered ghost-producer(s)?

Ooh interesting point. See Explud, there was still more mileage to be squeezed from that (deleted) thread...
As for the Psychedelic mix of HBHG, I'm inclined to agree with Ben J, it would have been nice to get a more early-breakbeat version of the track, and I'd also agree with Bosco that this sounds
less Psychedelic than the normal version. I'm inclined to think that this was a penultimate version of the track. We may have to adjust our expectations on the remaining "Psychedelic" mixes. Maybe it's just a fun heading to lump these things under for the Box Set, inspired (in theory, but not in practice) by that Beatles mythical Private Psychedelic Reel.

But then this article (https://www.residentadvisor.net/news/44522) came along and suggested the KiNK remix is now properly added to the box set. The Avalanches hadn't even finished the remix when they posted that OOC thing a couple of days ago. I would bet my bottom dollar that it will come with the box set in some shape or form. I think the secret psychedelic mix of HBHG is great, but not really a psychedelic mix, just an alternate mix. I like it. Funny that the high crazy synth drone at the end of this version is the intro to the final album version. Must have been such a long journey to get to where HBHG ended up!

Given how awesome the snippet sounds, it would be a legitimate reason. But I don't think it's that :D
Think the delay is either to align with the Astralwerks (North American) release, or make it into a "soft" Black Friday type release (Black Friday is the 29th of November). Basically something for The Chemical Brothers to release before the Holiday economic upswing.
Hope it's delayed for The Avalanches remix. The release as it stands, is still really overpriced.

Music biz fact: No one releases albums in December. If you want to have something out for Christmas you release it on or before the end of November. There may have been another reason for the initial delay but I think they're now aiming for the Christmas market.

I can enjoy 14 minutes of extra instrumentation. But if it's not adjusted into a journey-like aspect, what's the point?
Even Escape Velocity at a mere ~12 minutes can overextend its welcome upon listens.

I agree. I actually am not really a fan of Escape Velocity, especially as a track 2. I feel it kills the momentum/uplifting Snow creates. I rather it just go into Another World or even Don't Think and have Escape Velocity in the last third of the album. Wish we got those unmixed versions of tracks so I can make my own Further track order.

My guess is, if they eventually have a mockup, it will come closer to release date. A detailed mockup would create unnecessary expectations to the final product. That's what I fucking hate about pre-orders. They make sure it's viable before they guarantee any type of quality or aesthetic features.
"pre-order" has become a different name for a kickstarter. :-) which, like kickstarters, get delayed and sometimes even fail (see: massive attack).
I was wondering why I saw articles recently "announcing" this box set - I thought "hadn't it been announced months ago?" - but I suppose it wasn't a sure thing until more recently.

You're totally right. The same thing happened with Underworld's DRIFT, the boxset for which was mentioned a long time ago, but only recently has been "officially" announced.
I get it - it makes sense financially to see if there is a real market for the product before getting it manufactured. But it's pretty disheartening to think that these kinds of products might not be a reality when they are announced. Fortunately having not had to deal with any real disappointment from an unfulfilled promise of a non-existent product, I can only imagine the heartbreak.

If you're talking about Mezzanine deluxe LP reissue, it is pretty clear that had to do with Pledge Music going under and as they handled a huge batch of preorders when they went under, taking artists money with them. Massive Attack claimed it had to do with not having access to original artwork, but I believe that was total BS.
One thing, Massive Attack showed the color vinyl set fully printed. If there was an issue with the artwork, it would have already been known much earlier in the process. Also, if the artwork had issues, how did they press the CD copy?
(https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0068/0042/products/a25c2b65-84c4-44ef-83e2-412bcc280581_2048x2048_71b770d5-b50b-48f2-ad8b-688e9684ee3e_800x.jpg?v=1537210354)
Also, 3D released a book about the art of Massive Attack very recently and in it was the Mezzanine artwork, which shows he would have had to had access to the art.

I believe they lost a bunch of money because of Pledge Music. They hoped during the court proceedings that they would get money and kept delaying. When it became clear that wasn't going to happen, they cut their losses and it was cheaper just doing a single record release.
I'm still not sure if the people who preordered the vinyl set thru Pledge Music even got their money back.
I'm not sure how any of that changes anything. my point was, the initial announcement (example (https://mixmag.net/read/massive-attack-announce-mezzanine-reissue-for-20-year-anniversary-news)) was presented fairly formally as if it was going to be a thing, not "we'd like to try and make this happen, will you help us?" which would have been much more honest.
I totally agree with you. But unfortunately, for a lot of folks out there, a "this might be a thing, would you consider buying it?" doesn't give labels the same kind of feedback as "Hey! This is coming! Pre-order now!"
I think a lot of people would have thought "cool, that would be great" but not necessarily put down the money for something there's a chance wouldn't exist. I know. Thats's kinda hypocritical, but I'm pretty sure if you were to track the engagement in a Kickstarter type thing vs. an "official" pre-order, you'd see a lot more interest, and money, going towards the official thing that is (as far as audiences know) coming out in the near future.
I just wish the pre order announcement wouldn't have stated that pre orders were going to include the EBW 10" with earliest pre orders.
Just a thought about this version of Out Of Control.
When I was at Field Day, Erol Alkan dropped OOC in his mix BUT I remember at the time thinking 'This must be an unreleased edit' because it was more like a Chems live version where it was mostly instrumental and sparingly used the vocal (mostly just the title lyric).
But then again, my memory could arguably be unreliable.

Yeah. Pretty upset honestly. Especially with an already questionable price attached to a release that is mostly stuff we all own already.
Not cool. The Fuji Rocks 1999 CD should have been included worldwide.
Pretty sure that import releases in Japan are legally(?) required to have some sort of region-exclusive content in order to further discourage violation of the country's strict anti-piracy laws during the added wait, so the fact that there was something this era- and region-appropriate waiting in the Chemical vault is honestly kind of a lucky break for them

Preordered mine from Resident. http://www.resident-music.com/productdetails&product_id=65737
Total with international shipping to Canada was cheaper than from Rough Trade US! Still hoping to get one from my local shop but didn't want to risk it
well I was looking forward to a mad dash to the record store on Nov 15th to secure my copy but I guess I'll just pre-order it.
what's with bullmoose stating a release date of the 22nd when the announcement states the 15th?
Pre-ordered aswell. It will save me the trouble, thanks actionjackson !

I'm getting the impression that the avalanches remix will not be a last minute addition.
Now that i've listen to the Chemical Brothers special from Nemone's Electric Ladyland (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000b0w6), i think you're right. Nemone says (04:30) that Kink was the only one beeing asked to do a remix for the 20th Anniversary. That makes the story behind the Avalanches remix even more interesting.
Re: the OOC 21 minutes 12", I have confirmed with my local shop here in Canada that this release appears to be UK indie shop and HMV exclusive. So not really record stores worldwide after all?
Did anyone here buy the Japanese edition with bonus live CD, if so, where did you order from without a hassle?

Well that was rather... Underwhelming :(
Sounds more like a sound check jam than a proper new version of OOC. I was expecting something leaning more towards Enjoyed than OOC in repeat with delay effects on the voice...

(I'll wait to hear it fresh on vinyl)
I actually went to a store like they wanted us to do. but they didn't have it. so I came home and ordered it from bullmoose.
Oh so this is definitely the mix Erol Alkan played when I saw him in June - works really well in a DJ set
Does anyone else kinda feel buying this release is just super WEIRD.
Kind of crossing that thin line of being a massive life-long fan and becoming a soulless collector?
I mean, most of us from the old forums already have 99% in this release on wax in some way or another.
I'm excited about the Kate Gibb prints to make a cool poster, but for that price(+shipping) you could buy one of the new cool original silkscreens she's making that are freaking awesome and support her in a real way.
Not hating at all, but none of us is gonna even play these records, like you don't want f em up cause of their value. The compilation is just gonna gather dust somewhere. Half the fun with the Chems releases it's playing around with the records and after 10+ years they're usually just done and you buy another cheap copy of the 12" single..
It's really not about the money; Yes, if it's a amazing package for a classic like Surrender we all love and it's without a doubt an extremely important piece of art, it's worth it... but still this is not the Chemical spirit.
If they go the way of Massive Attack and making extremely high price releases... like that's it, I'm not fucking with that.
Love the Chems, always will, and hope they do great forever but this direction has me worried.
Does anybody else feel conflicted or I'm I just tripping hard?
Btw, thanks WhiteNoise for the tempban 4y ago, did great on my finals back then lol, guess I'm back

I agree with most of what you said, but not this. I drop money on vinyl to play it, not to have it sitting around sealed so I can look at it. I'm not hating either, I'm just not a collector.
Quote from: Mob1 on Nov 16, 2019, 21:20Kind of crossing that thin line of being a massive life-long fan and becoming a soulless collector?
not all of us are in the "already have 99% of this" boat. I have not even heard most of the bonus material. heck I hadn't owned a legitimate copy of Surrender until the vinyl re-press a few years back. (this actually is pretty common for me - in particular for music that was originally released during a period of both limited personal income and internet piracy taking off - re-issues and box sets are often the first time I purchase it, once it has stood the test of time.)
however my purchase of the white label is pretty soulless, I will admit that. stupid numbered edition taking my money.
I would normally agree, as I borderline minimalist, but my promo copy of Surrender is starting to show its age and it's been the most enjoyed and listened album in my life thus far.
If they sell funkopop Tom and Ed I'll draw the line there.

The game has changed. Record sales (despite the resurgence of vinyl) are nil. So the "soulless" collectors market is the only way to really garner attention if you want to sell physical media. This is just a celebratory package for those who may have missed out in that era, or to those that might cherish it (us).
It's expensive and not totally fulfilling (for the majority of us here). But that's the cost of marketing obsolete media in todays world.
I just looked up on iTunes and the digital anniversary album with psychedelic mixes and remixes is being pre-sold at $17.99. That's pretty reasonable IMO. Could be an option if the cost is bothering you. Plus, any DVD material will surely end up on YouTube.
I personally haven't pre-ordered a copy of anything other than the white label 'Out of Control'. Hell, I still don't own 'No Geography', yet. If you ask me, my current actions are a signifier of how much streaming music has wean my desire for physical media.
21 mins of boring. Glad, that i'm not buying this overrated and expensive release enjoying classic edition and having one of australian, and of course all the singles from that era.
P.S. They can release this jams freely, who bought the digital releases of this album, truly. But we.. we already have this album in a lot of bunches of a physical releases.
Sorry for the dead kitten, but in all of this I see a note of bullying for sincere fans.
Meh, I think you're overreacting and being unreasonable.
As far as we know, these alternate versions are from 20+ years ago. They seemingly were never supposed to be released to the public. Releasing them in physical form was merely incentive for the dedicated fanbase to seek interest about this anniversary release.
Is it appropriately priced? Probably not. Is there truly anything of significance for a dedicated fan in this release? That's to be determined.
The truth is this was probably not their idea to do an anniversary release. They were probably advised that this would be the right time to do something like this, because 5-10 years from now (25th Anniversary, 30th Anniversary) The Chemical Brothers will be further removed from relevancy. You might as well sell something while you still are in the publics eye, your target demographic are still alive and spending money, and physical media is still a "thing".
OMG! THE CHEMS WANT ALL MY MONIEZZZ!!!
Quote from: Bosco on Nov 18, 2019, 22:29Releasing them in physical form was merely incentive for the dedicated fanbase to seek interest about this anniversary release.
This.
Don't know what you guys are expecting from these releases. They're not going to be magical incredible new versions, they've already put out what I'm sure they felt the best mixes of these songs were. Maybe "secret psychedelic mix" hyped it up a bit much. It's a cool peek behind the scenes from a band that hasn't allowed a lot of that (we've basically had leaks to keep us warm).
The more you guys moan about how "boring" these mixes are, the less likely we're going to get more of em.
The $$$ is for the packaging like Bosco said. We're all just here for the music aren't we?
Speaking of the music I LOVE where the jam goes from around 12:30 on. Bassline just goes off.

Completely agree. I put this boxset in the same world as the recent Underworld anniversary boxsets. A remastered version of the album, a bunch of demo versions of songs I know and love with an occasional "new" track thrown in (that, despite being a lot of fun to dive into - are never as good as the album tracks), lots of great design work and writing, and a beautiful piece of art to house everything in - tying up what is a well meaning and enjoyable look back at a particular era in a bands' journey.
This boxset doesn't have quite as much "new" stuff as those Underworld collections, but Rik&Karl are particularly known for jamming their little hearts out and recording a multitude of different versions of tracks - heck, they're still doing it now with Drift. Tom&Ed on the other hand - not so much.

The Underworld boxsets have loads of great stuff on them and the Drift series has been absolutely amazing.
From the 2 psychedelic mixes we've heard, I'm not blown away, but still cool to have.
I think I am more excited about the Japan bonus live disc, but I am just not in the position right now financially to spend over a $100 on something like that, which truly guts me as Surrender is like my top 5 album of all time. I wanna hear that live disc so bad and afraid I won't get to. I wish they would just release it digitally.

I guess its ok to have second thoughts about buying anything thats chems related, especially when it comes to price! Everybody is going to have their own reason for buying this...whether if its about the music, or collecting, or for whatever reason. I can see why some people dont feel justified in buying this box set but thats ok!
Yes, the price of the Surrender vinyl box set is too goddamn high, but you know what, im not even mad! I definitely see myself buying it later on in the future because to me, its a once in a lifetime item, and I'm not in a hurry to get it...yet. Besides, with the same amount of money, I can buy the gaps in my collection (missing EBW's Glint CD, Salmon Dance CD, and that damn Velodrome vinyl)
We as fans have responded to physical releases by buying them because we weren't forced in any way, but because its based on different parts. Part of it is fan loyalty, part of it is music, part of it is because we just came back from one of their concerts and want to hear more of their stuff, part of it is having a copy of something that is unique and stands out, etc. I would never want somebody to buy something now and then regret it later because it was to expensive or they only played it once in 5 years. You do you, and go with the flow!
But Mob1, If your having second thoughts on this, than no worries. I wouldn't consider any of us soulless collectors, but more like sponsors of this great music that's gonna be carried with us for the rest of our lives.

Well I agree with you that I love this one too. But I don't understand people who weren't fans of the original (supposedly that includes Noel G?). I was stomping along earlier with this playing from my phone. And it does feel like quite a psychedelic mix. When it really hits full force around 2.23 my heart does a little jump for joy. I haven't formed strong opinions on these ones yet. But I will say that it's nice to listen to all these tracks consecutively. They're Chems tracks but not as we know them. Still 100% Chemical though - no "foreign bodies" from outside remixers. I'm also enjoying listening to the B-sides consecutvely straight aftrrwards. Something I don't tend to do because I just have the B sides on the CD singles and I've never put 'em all on my hard drive or phone.
It feels a bit like when you get a new Chems DJ mix on your phone to listen to - it's not a new album but it's something new and Chemical. Mind you (as with the DJ mixes) I haven't paid £££ for the pleasure.
As we're on the subject of the album, The Sunshine Underground always makes me think of Doves' The Cedar Room (have I mentioned this before?). I know TSU came out in '99 and
Cedar Room came out in 2000, actually it it came out as a single in 1998 (https://www.discogs.com/Doves-Cedar-EP/master/407677). But Doves released it on Heavenly - a label the Chems would be familiar with on a personal level. I still have a theory that they heard the Cedar Room
before it was released and that the intro from 0.25 to 0.50 (https://youtu.be/GWJ0xr0Zv0Q?t=25) (which also recurrs around 5.00) influenced TSU's outro. The similarity seems too much to be a coincidence.

The Doves sample you pointed out is pretty striking (and the song's pretty nice too, thanks for that)! I don't know whether I shall like this "discovery" or not.
With some of the released (psychedelic) remixes so far I must admit that this anniversary package lost a little steam with me which made me somewhat sceptical whether to go get it or not. Still on the fence with myself spending 50 bucks on the CD/DVD combo...
On the other hand, and I hope that's the case, I understand that these mixes are glimpses into their creative processes being products of their time of creation and not newly put together tracks? Does anyone know for sure? If that were the case I'd feel a lot better about this. Don't get me wrong, I love them for putting out something unique but it somehow hasn't stoked my excitement thus far as much as I hoped it would. At least you guys praising Let Forever Be (which I really love) rekindled some of that :)
Caveat: I might be exaggerating a little here and I might still be embarrassingly hyped from hearing it, but:
Secret Let Forever Be is kind of worth the price of the entire package.

It's a good spot! It could still be a coincidence just because that effect is pretty easy to achieve. You just tweak the frequency of an LFO set to control a filter cutoff frequency or volume envelope. Definitely could have been inspired by it or could have accidentally come across it on their own.

Doves are such a good band. The Last Broadcast album is probably the easiest entry point but honestly all their albums are good. And after a ten year sabbatical (they never said they had split up, they were just on a break!) they're back. Played a hadful of gigs in 2019 and we expect new music from them next year. Other individual tracks (well, singles) worth checking out: Pounding, There Goes The Fear (full length if possible), Black & White Town, Caught By The River.
Fun fact: Before they were Doves they were Sub Sub and sounded
very different (Ain't No Love Ain't No Use). Here endeth my Doves hijack.

Hey these look great by the way - it's a simple touch but I'm very glad they changed the box art just a bit.
Have had the 4LP box in hand for a couple of days. Letting it sink in a little before making any real judgments, but so far I am 100% in agreement that the Let Forever Be mix is the highlight.

How did you get your copy so quick?
A) Related to Kate Gibb!
B) Broke into UMG Headquarters!
C) Asked Ukraine for a copy in exchange for dirt on Biden!
D) Tom or Ed gave you one
As for judgements, I plan to do a write up as soon as I listen to it and watch the DVD! I havent listened to any of the mixes or the OOC mix at all. Kinda of keeping it for a surprise for tommorow
Ok. So far it's left Tennessee! Should be here locally by noon!

Haha!! If only.. I work casually at a record store in town and the order came in early so I snuck my copy home.
Listened to them on Spotify just now.
Spoiler
Let Forever Be is the standout for me, but it's too short. So much amazing Surrender era ear candy, I love it. Not a big fan of the intro (sounds like they're trying to be something they're not? idk) but from like 1 min onwards it's brilliant.
Flashback is also great, for similar reasons. But the original is better. In fact the original is incredible, I never really gave it a proper go back in the day but it's a cracking tune now.
Dream On is good while it's different, then it's basically the same with less vocoder.
OOC is basically the original that cuts to a long jam session where they're just messing about. As a fan and a producer it's cool to hear the sounds and synth patches out of context and tweaked around a bit, but as a track it's not doing it for me. I was also hoping for some of the other bits that fell by the wayside on the journey to the final version. Other Bernard and Bobby bits, or wild synth parts for example.
HBHG is a miss for me. It's not bad, but it's not really psychedelic, so I was disappointed from the start. Ah well.
Definitely not complaining though. Great little package of alternative mixes. And I'm happy to get the vinyls to fill out my collection. Hyped for the Kate Gibb prints too!
I went for a hunt of the vinyl boxset in Paris this morning, and got one ! I also finally received my OOC vinyl. The boxset is beautiful, there are a lot of interviews inside that I haven't read yet. I'm watching Glasto 2000 right now :music
My CD/DVD/Bonuses box-set has just arrived. It looks stunning :)
I haven't read the booklet yet but it looks like it's got lots of interesting, nostalgic stuff in there. The album art prints are a real highlight for me. I've been wanting 12" prints of Kate's work to hang on the wall for a long time, so these will take pride of place on my wall.
I'm looking forward to listening to the CDs... I'm currently working on a Surrender anniversary DJ mix, so it will be interesting to see if I can squeeze in some of the Psychedelic mixes 8)

Listened to all the mixes as well.
Hey Boy Hey Girl - I'm a fan of this one since it unearthed on the live show. It extends the experience of the track during the show with another breakdown. Really like it.
Let Forever Be - Never been a great fan of the original. I like this version better.
Out of Control - It looks like I'm gonna be on the opposite - I like it. I may be a little biased because it's my favourite chems track. Especially the 07/08 tour version. It blew my mind back then.
So I have 21 minutes of Out Of Control with more variations and I love it.
Flashback - Great version! Love the acidy lines.
Dream On - Also great.
All in all. I like those psychedelic mixes. It's cool to have something new that was made during that era. Would like to have more tho. I'm looking at the 4-5CD level of Underworld's anniversaries. Those editions have some outstanding tracks. Well, maybe I was a little let down by the Beaucoup Fish one. I want "Dig Your Own Hole" anniversary, c'mon.

Mine was in Junk. Worth a look. I got the email yesterday that it was being shipped.
Mine has been despatched a few hours ago from Amazon and should land in my hands tomorrow!
Arrived home to my package. I hadn't paid attention to the marketing and thought they sent me vinyl by mistake. It's vinyl sized...but you already knew that.
I'll be under the influence giving a good listen tonight...
So Capital One flagged Nov 20's charge from "Digital Stores" of $57.91 as possible fraud. I thought "Hell yeah that looks like fraud, I did NOT order anything in that amount from some random sounding business in the middle of the night" and had the charge and the card canceled.
Once a little more info showed up in my account and I was able to do some more thorough Googling I figured outta that it was UMG and was able to dig up my pre-order email from June. Was able to un-cancel the transaction, but not un-cancel my old card number, so I still get to log my new card number into some dozen sites/businesses/services that are all on auto-pay.
First the No Geography vinyl/digital shit-show, now this. Another Chemical Brothers official merch win!
just walked into my usual record shop and they had it. no problem. (canada)
i love this flashback remix. when i first heard flashback i thought it was the shit, just the fucking bomb. now i'm a little bored of it..but this remix makes it feel much more like a tune i can listen to!
and i love the synth tweaky bits that start half way through the OOC mix, the ones just like the 1999 live improvs by ed
Early thoughts.
I forgot how much I love this album, and it's been a long time since I listened to it as such (and not through playlists, mixes, etc.). Sounds great.
What a great bunch of b-sides! This "curated" disc could easily be its own release. Enjoyed is still one of my all-time favorites. I've never owned a crisp version of Sasha's Out of Control remix, so it was a great experience on a proper listen. The Kink remix of HBHG is growing on me, but I still prefer the Soulwax version.
The Secret Psychedelic Mixes are fun, but it's hard for 21 minutes of Out of Control to meet the hype. Let Forever Be is definitley the standout for me. I also love when Dream On kicks in, but it somewhat loses it's uniquness in the middle. And Flashback is the alt mix I didn't know I needed.
First impressions! Love the art work on everything (even the inner sleeves) I thoroughly enjoyed the Psychedelic Mixes ( LFB is way up there!) The booklet was a great read while listening to album again! Gonna start the DVD right now. Overall excellent package!

Now that I've had a chance to listen to it all, I really like the secret psychedelic mixes. The standout for me is Let Forever Be. Given the original's psychedelic nature this one works the best. But I have to say the Flashback and Dream On mixes are ace too, I think I prefer them to the originals. Certainly Flashback anyway.
HBHG is really cool from a DJing point of view, but I agree with others that it's not particularly psychedelic. It's like an EBW version if anything. The Out of Control mix is a fun jam sesh, but I think I prefer the second half of it where it goes a bit crazy and moves away from the usual build, drop, build, drop structure. The only mix I'm not a big fan of is the Kink remix, which surprised me because I usually love everything he does.
Overall it's a good collection, even though I own most of it already. Worth the purchase for the 12" artwork and the psychedelic mixes alone imo :)
A few more thoughts as I digest the release:
-The new mix of Let Forever Be is still the highlight. This version would be superb worked into the live set imo
-Call me a cynic but I sort of wonder whether these are all really alternate 1999 mixes that have been left untouched. Did they get any updating in preparation for release?
-Why no Power Move on the vinyl box?! The rest of the bsides received regular release on the 12" singles but Power Move is only on the cd single and OOC promo 12". That one really grinds my gears
-Was hoping the new Dream On mix was going to be an expansion on the reprise version, especially since that is also missing from the original vinyl release
Despite these minor gripes and questions, the box is well worth the price of admission. The book and art prints are beautifully produced.
Man, that Facebook and Instagram Surrender filter is awesome! They really nailed the Kate Gibb art style
Today I received the CD+DVD boxset and WOW :o At first I thought they've sent me the vinyl boxset ;D
The package is glorious, I have to admit. Gonna dig the DVD and the bonus material tomorrow... can't wait!
I wonder how the 4CD Japan boxset looks and feels compared to the normal one available everywhere else? Sometimes they use different materials, like with the Brotherhood box.
Has anyone seen pictures of the 2 disc basic release? I'm waiting for the 3 disc to come from Japan which is apparently a digi case sleeve, I wondered if the 2 disc was digi as well. No pictures on discogs yet.

I thought that too (sorry!) - they sound very polished! But not complaining, loving the new (old) mixes.
After a couple of days with the vinyl box set, I have a couple of raves and rants.
The curated record with B-Sides and OOC and HBHG mixes is ok, but they could've least put in Scale and The Diamond Sky on the record as well right?
The Psychedelic Mixes is the standout in this boxset: HBHG - The beginning sounds like something from H.I.A. but then I already get the notion that this version of HBHG sounds a bit punchier but nothing new that would awaken my ears. A decent but good mix but slightly skippable! LET FOREVER BE - Some of you have already sampled and tasted this tasty nugget, and I love this alternative version very much. One of the best mixes on this record. I just really wish there was more variation in the track ( play with the vocals more or sounds, etc) FLASHBACK - YES! More of a soundtrack version to me. Love the little echoes of 'flashback' at the end, but I like the way they did those 'haunting' sounds (if that's the best way to describe it) and I think they played it in reverse just to add variation. Kudos to the Bros for putting out this 2nd version. DREAM ON - This one really got my attention much quicker than the others at the beginning. But it's nothing more than an another alternate version of the original. Some subtle changes but enjoyed it! OUT OF CONTROL - First half is just the usual tracks linear path, but it changes it up much more in the second half with effects and 'mess-arounds' with the signature song pattern. Its repetitious for 22 minutes but I give it credit for the change up at the halfway mark ,in which I think saved this track. Interesting mix!
Overall the only thing I would've change in this mix would be the spacing of the tracks. I wish this could've been a continuous mix and blend in one track to another (while leaving OOC on its own).
As for the Surrender album, so far it sounds the same as my original record from 1999 imo. Maybe some more listens to change my mind but this version has a slight gain in volume from about 15 percent compared to the original. I had a great nostalgic listen from beginning to end while I was reading the booklet.
Speaking of the booklet,I love the contribution in the columns! Alexis Petridis, and Adam Smith give nods to the album and share feelings for this anniversary. Really love the page with the collage of the passes, pics, and ads. Good reads from the early beginning recordings with Bernard Summer, to the Mojo album review, to Robin Turners write up on Surrenders zenith at Glasto! Good stuff.
The Glasto 99 DVD was a pretty good companion for the boxset for casual fans, but only 40 plus minutes? I really wish there was more? If you already seen the WOODSTOCK 99 footage, then you probably seen this before besides the different camera angles and variations of the live tracks such as BRB,STTS,etc. Otherwise, I liked it but made me want more.
The Kate Gibb prints are gorgeous and colorful on a nice cardstock. Definitely gonna frame them altogether.
Overall I mostly liked everything in this box and thought this was well made in rememberance to the classic album. I enjoy having a fresh new copy of the album in addition to my my older one. Really love the prints, the booklet, and the Psychedelic mixes. Besides my minor gripes that I mentioned above, I have to question the value of everything you get in this box.
IMO I think the vinyl box set is fairly priced. 20 bucks more if were talking about the EBW's bundled. But as some of you know, I love this band as much as anyone else, and enjoy collecting their catalog. So if you feel the same way than go for it, but at least shop around for deals (maybe black friday) or maybe find a shop online in your country to avoid crazy shipping charges. I paid around 120.97 for mine, but with one day shipping & handling is $8.99 and tax, $12.34, my total was $142.30, but I had an Amazon credit card with points for cash back, so I use those points toward this purchase and got it down to 120.17 total. Then today, I got an email for an additional 14.87 refund for my purchase because I had price-protection, which means if I buy an item today and it drops in price the next day, I'll get the difference back, so now I really just paid 105.30 for the box set.
As of this post, the price went down to 92.37, so its still cheaper than the chems store version.
Overall very satisfied with the boxset! Oh and by the way, if you have problems playing the glasto concert from the main menu, go to chapter instead! It will play from there.

I guess that's all they had, which is more than they broadcast back in 2000 so thats a bonus. It's a shame they didnt put more footage from other shows on the dvd. In terms of Surrender live tracks the disc is a bit lite. I wish they had padded it with the Red rock show, there definitely footage for out of control and sunshine underground. Not keen on seeing any Woodstock footage, it's a bit naff.

I was wondering about this, too. I don't know what I was expecting, but on my first proper listen I was thinking, "I guess the EQ must have been pretty good the first time around". It's frustrating when people say remasters are just a matter of turning up the volume, but it is more frustrating when it sounds like they are right. I think I may go back to the original and then compare back to back. I'm sure I am missing something.
And regardless, I am still in favor or remasters for Exit Planet Dust and Dig Your Own Hole. I KNOW those need it.
Anyone try mixing the original and the new at matched levels (one being inverted) to see if any eq or dynamics changes are present? I listened to it the other day and thought I was hearing new subtleties, but they were on Bose knock-off headphones, so it was already going to sound different.

Hey Inchem, In your picture I see 6 Kate Gibb art prints. In all the webshop description I see 4. $ are the singles, HBHG, LFB, OOC, M:R. 5 and 6 on your picture seems to be Surrender cover and Surrender inlay. Do I see this correct or are there differences in the (paper) quality?

Red Rocks footage would have been a treat. Seeing those clips of TSU & Music Response was how I first discovered the Chems. I would LOVE to see that whole show.
Receive the Japanese version today. The Fuji Rock set is such a treat to listen to. The rest of the content is the same as what everyone else has been posting. To my knowledge there is no variance in the physical or audio material other than the Fuji Rock set. Unless you count the Japanese language insert that describes the material.

Good to know. I picked up the Japanese edition of the Brotherhood mini boxset, but the US/UK box had like this cloth-type material on it whereas the Japan edition was just usual cardboard material. I liked the way the material on the US/UK one looked and felt compared to Japan's standard cardboard.

Remasters? I know that some records have been supposedly 'remastered' but only just ripped from CD file (digital copy)and not the actual master tapes. Because of this, some records will never have the same sound as the original record. Google master tapes fire!
Anyway, back on the subject. As for the comparison of both records (1999 version and this version) I think there might be some differences that can be sniffed out with better ears than my own. On my next day off, Ill give it another go and play them both with closer attention and weed out any differences. But then again, I think one of you might get to it first.

Hey Inchem, In your picture I see 6 Kate Gibb art prints. In all the webshop description I see 4. $ are the singles, HBHG, LFB, OOC, M:R. 5 and 6 on your picture seems to be Surrender cover and Surrender inlay. Do I see this correct or are there differences in the (paper) quality?
those extra pictures (5 and 6) are the 'artsy' inserts for the album. when you get the box set and open the actual album, the actual records are in 'regular' white paper inserts. This was something I should've pointed out in my review but when you usually get records (when they get mishandled by putting them back in the insert), the inserts will get seam splits on the bottom or sides. The box set prevents this buy giving you 'back-up' inserts so you dont have to use the 'artsy' ones. Hope this explains this but nevertheless a nice touch in details . Oh and the paper quality is good but less thick than the prints

I wish they had padded it with the Red rock show, there definitely footage for out of control and sunshine underground.

Red Rocks footage would have been a treat. Seeing those clips of TSU & Music Response was how I first discovered the Chems. I would LOVE to see that whole show.
This would've been perfect to round out the DVD! Missed opportunity!
Can anyone who owns the Kate Gibb prints tell me what kind of material these are made of? Is it just like poster paper or rather thicker/ heavier paper more akin to the Born in the Echoes silk print?
Oh, and by the way, how did the digital download voucher work out for you LP buyers this time around? Any issues?

Curious what the 3CD packaging is like, is it a digipack or box?
Found these pics on eBay, apparently comes in a 8 panel digipack sleeve.

I wanna hear the Fuji Rock disc so bad. I love live show recordings.

Not gonna lie, I also prefer the form factor. The vinyl size package is beautiful, but I didn't need that. No complaints, I'm happy. :)

The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie CD set was also vinyl sized. It is quite pretty with the CDs housed in this purplish red velvety felt holder. The rest of their reissues came in CD sized boxes, like Brotherhood. The Aeroplane Flies High set is probably my fave, the box and CD sleeves done in this colorful reflective material, each their own color and design.
P.S. I would gladly throw a few bucks for a lossless rip of the Fuji Rock CD until I csn pick up my own copy. ;)
I have all the Chem Bros albums' Japan editions, so my OCD collector's brain is in the red right now not having the Japan edition of this. My favorite are the Japan Modern Masters edition of Exit Planet Dust, Dig Your Own Hole, Surrender, Come With Us, and Brothers Gonna Work It Out as they're CD sized versions of the vinyl releases done in sleeves and gatefolds like their vinyl counterparts.
I decided to order off of amazon. after my coinstar voucher I only had to pay $17 more, too good to pass up. I literally saved up in my piggy bank for this.

Sweet! Looks like there's more copies available and the price is sticky for now.
Follow up regarding remasters: Upon further listens, I am wondering if Surrender (the track) is actually fuller and more textured or if I am just grasping for changes and have forgotten how beautiful this track actually is.
I have a Japanese 3x CD!
I bought the album (3CD+DVD) last Friday at a consumer electronic store. They had only one in stock, and at first I thought it was the vinyl version.
The package is gorgeous. I've always loved Gibbs artwork, and here it can really shine! Can we have this for every album, pretty please? I still have to read the massive booklet, so far I just leafed through it.
As for the music, the Psychedelic Mixes sound really fun, like a different stage in the progress of making a Chems song, they feel less polished and edited like the known versions. The LFB mix gives us a glimpse into what a live version could possibly be like. I also thought "this is what LFB would sound like were it an DYOH track.
Currently listening through the Curated CD. I don't mind that there's not much new stuff on it, just to have a proper version of Soulwax HBHG and Enjoyed makes this CD worth it. Also, the fantastic Sasha remix of OOC is new to me.
Final thoughts: I love that this re-issue lets me kind of rediscover the release of Surrender (back when it was originally released, I didn't even know the Chemical Brothers. My oldest memory is seeing the video of Star Guitar on MTV or VIVA, but Stupid Past Me didn't like the music back then). It's amazing how fresh the music still sounds, 20 years on.

About that download card that's in our boxsets...
Hi - thank you for contacting us.
I am very sorry but there has been a delay in us obtaining the audio for this title from the record label. We hope to receive it in the next few days. You will be able to validate a unique code and download the album once it becomes available.
Please accept our sincere apologies for the wait.
Kind regards
Support
Many thanks! I just wanted to confirm that mine doesn't work as well....
So as always in recent whirly fashion, I've avoided online spoilers... and I'm late to the party. So much so, I'm not getting my box set until later today as I had only ordered it last week when I went to pick up my copy of 21 minutes of madness mix from the shop. It's a pretty penny to plunk down for this box set which was part of my delay. But this release is a good way for my hubs to gift our upcoming silver wedding anniversary with something I really want and know I will get years of enjoyment from. <3 Cannot wait to head to the shop (which is quite a ways from where I live) this afternoon to not only support an old local dj who runs it, but revel in the opportunity to support a milestone release from my favorite band.
We did however download the digital version last weekend and took an impromptu road day-trip for the occasion - listened to it in its full glory as we drove out to the desert, then listened to the psychedelic mixes with new ears whilst driving along winding switchbacks up to the snow-dust covered mountains.
So many memories the album conjures up which gave us plenty to chat and reminisce about with the music as our backdrop. The mixes got our undivided first-listen attention (lest we careen off the side of the mountain, haha). My favorite of the bunch at the moment is Let Forever Be. What I enjoy most about the mixes is they have a rawness to them that feel like late night rambling studio jams. So glad these were unearthed - behind Tom's sofa maybe? ;) - and made available for us to listen to. As a whole though, 20 years on and the music has weathered the years so well.

had problems when them as well with other pre-orders. When you place a pre-order with Udiscover, they'll get an authorization (kind of like a hold) that they'll charge your card in the future. When your items ship, then they'll place a charge to your credit card
They dropped the ball on me twice. One time they said they were out of stock when I pre-ordered 3 months ago, and another time I pre-ordered, they said I had insufficient funds (which was BS, and called my bank to confirm this) and these both instances happened DAYS BEFORE THE RELEASE DATE!
lesson learned.
Give us an update Benj if that 4 CD box set comes in, or if you plan to cancel.
Nomen est omen, huh?! U discover ... We'll get there when we get there!
It actually arrived the day of my message, while the Japanese one is at the post office waiting for me. So they arrived the same day.
Have to say, this whole pre-order thing has been very, very badly handled.
Not to keep harking on about it, but the Underworld DRIFT boxset arrived three days after the release date. They presumably shipped it early to guarantee it would arrive as close to the release date as possible. It also came from the UK.
The fact that we're still waiting for this Surrender boxset is ridiculous. And, like some of you have indicated - it severely lessens the chance of us pre-ordering things in the future - which in turn makes a hypothetical release look less attractive to the label (following our discussion of how labels will put something up for pre-order before it actually exists).
It doesn't even take that long to get things shipped internationally. I've sent many packages to England, and received them here too. Two weeks tops. And that's with no rush mail or anything - just your run of the mill snail mail option. I just don't get it.
I know they don't care but, it really is a shame.
Wow, hearing these stories, I'm very glad I did not pre-order online as tempting as it was to ensure I had a copy... :(
I picked up my order from the shop Sunday afternoon. I'm really pleased with the boxed set. It's beautifully presented, nice touches with the bonus album sleeves, gorgeous artwork, the prints are sturdy and fine for framing if I decide on doing that at some point later on, lovely booklet, the whole package feels substantial - I love having this nicely thought out and special set to add to my Chems stuff. I don't have the greatest set up to play vinyl, so it'll be headphone listening for me, and honestly the vinyl looks soooo pretty and unscathed to fumble with right now, but the novelty of 'new' will wear off soon enough. ;D I do wish there was a bit more live material on the DVD but eh, nothing for me to be upset over.
Did anyone who ordered early actually receive the EBW vinyl that was promised if you where one of the first to order??
Just received mine today that was ordered through the chems site and did not receive the EBW vinyl for ordering "early"
The EBWs were not exclusive to being early - you had to actively choose them as an option when buying. In fact, an email from Chemical HQ that was sent today seems to suggest that you can STILL purchase the boxset with the EBWs 10".
I think there was someone else who ordered it but didn't get a concrete confirmation of the EBWs. They got in touch with someone who told them that you had to opt to purchase them - rather than them being a bonus for early enough pre-order.
I do remember it being very unclear on the initial announcement date. I ordered mine a week or so later and they had made it a bit more clear and had the boxset listed with the EBWs as a full package.
Seriously, I never saw any other band with this many issues. From glitches and incorrect edits/mixes put on releases to screwing up album announcement details, telling fans if you buy early you get something bonus, to even shipping out orders on time as people are still waiting for their Surrender boxset. I have never seen this level of mistakes with any other band. Especially for what they charge for their boxset vinyl and even digital reissues with quite a few of them priced at £13.49... for an EP! I mean even the Japanese edition bonus live CD has audio issues with clicks and noise on a couple of tracks, especially in the right channel. Isn't there anyone that listens to this stuff before putting it out? Quality control or something? Thank god Chem HQ listened and replaced the releases with issues and they are aware of the reissued digits pricing, but that has yet to be fixed.

Dammit, the japanese edition is still on hold at a delivery facility, and it's an hour from my place. Apparently they can't deliver to a relay near me because I have to pay some taxes. And since there are massive strikes in France right now, I can't even go there to pick it up anyway.
OK. I have mine. And am now much less angry about the whole thing. Got to wait till I get home to open it (too must clay dust around here!) but boy howdy, pretty freakin' excited!

The write ups are wonderful and the whole thing looks seriously amazing. Well done to everyone involved.
Now. I won't be able to listen to it until possibly Wednesday at the earliest - but HECK YEAH am I ready to dive in.
Side note. Did anyone have any trouble using The Sound of Vinyl download code that came with the EBWs? I don't exactly need a copy of them (I was kind of hoping it would be for the whole anniversary package - I like to have legit downloads of things I've bought) but try as I might to download, the code ain't workin'!
I had problems downloading and raised a ticket with the support.
There were two download codes in my edition. One of them is now accepted and downloaded.
The second still doesn't work.

Honestly it didnt bother me. The set is cut at the end of Chemical Beats, I don't think there are any edits in the middle. It starts a bit abruptly into Hey Boy Hey Girl, there's no TNK.
It's not the best 1999 set but it's still nice to hear a "new" old set. I'd recommend to get it because it's still a pretty nice object. I love the packaging (although the Fuji set is in a separate package of its own).

It would've been wise to include Woodstock instead considering they already filmed the whole concert (Especially having Flashback in the encore, a surrender song, instead of leave home). but then they would have to find a way to edit out all the crowd flashing.
not complaining though. Watched it with mammasuper and it was much enjoyable on the 40 inch.
(EDIT) I Just realised you were talking about the fujirock CD and not the glastonbury DVD
So I took some of Kate Gibb's artwork and created some cover art for the Fuji Rock 1999 audio
Fiiiiinally received my 4LP box set on Monday. It's gorgeous. I'm really happy to have high quality prints of Kate Gibb's artwork. I think I'm going to frame a couple of them. The booklet is also quality.
I never had Surrender on vinyl, which is a bit awkward because it's my favourite Chems album. So it's great to have a high quality 4LP with the lovely transparent vinyl. Same goes for the b-sides selection. Flashback is a new favourite of mine, so it's cool to have that.
I haven't checked out the DVD, but I imagine it will have the same issues as everyone else's. That's ok, I didn't really buy this for the DVD anyway.
The psychedelic mixes I've already commented on. They're nice to have, and really interesting to hear, but not really what the box set is about. I was actually looking forward to those the most, but now I have the box set I'm glad I bought it for the rest.

Did any of y'all end up framing the Kate prints?

What's the next larger size? Perhaps you could frame it like a passe-partout with a background cut-out cardboard in a color that goes with the print?

Ah, I see. I didn't remember their exact appearance. Another option, yet perhaps a bit pricier, could be to have it framed individually by a professional framer.
Mats are cheap, frames are expensive. Get a custom cut mat and a standard size frame. The mat can be cut to cover up the white border of the print, then it will fit into a standard frame.
Hi everybody !
I'm working on a podcast show dedicated to "Surrender" but it's very hard to find complete information about the making of this album.
I noticed this 28-pages essay by Jon Savage in the Box Set and I wonder if some of you got a copy to share with me.
It would help me a lot.
Thanks,
I have the set. I only really wanted the music / discs and would be willing to sell the box, the book, and the prints at a reasonable price. However, I'm sure international shipping would be an obstacle.
But that goes for anyone who already has the music but might want the materials...I want to let them go, despite the prints being beautiful. The box was opened once to read the book, review the prints, and remove the discs.
Thanks for your proposal but I would just need a copy of the booklet, not the booklet itself. Would it be possible for you to send me a JPG or PDF scan ?
This is gonna come off jerk-ish, but why don't you make an investment and buy the box set for the exclusive content. You know, support the Artist which you're basing your subject matter on.
You can even call me out on your Podcast and say, "this asshole from the forum wouldn't help me, and made me buy the Box set."
It's not that expensive, and from a quick search doesn't seem too limited to the public at the moment.

Anybody watch 'Winning Time: The Rise of The Lakers Dynasty' on HBO? Well after two seasons (more like 1.5 seasons) it's cancelled and apparently a little too costly to make. That being said, it's quite a good dramatized series based on true events, if you're ever interested about the legacy of the Los Angeles Lakers franchise... But that's not why I'm posting here.
Jason Segel's character Paul Westhead wears a polo shirt with a familiar pattern to the Surrender ribbon/rainbow that makes appearance across all of Surrender's era artwork from Kate Gibb. I was wondering if there is a title for this ribbon/rainbow design? And maybe someone might have a lead to where I could find similar wears.
