Title: Upcoming Dig Your Own Hole 20 year anniversary speculation and or suggestions
Post by: Bosco on May 25, 2016, 19:20
This forum is sooooo dead right now, so lets talk about something that's been stirring in my mind about the future of The Chemical Brothers.

'Dig Your Own Hole' is a pivotal album for The Chemical Brothers that really put them on the map, world wide. It's probably the most listened album by the casual music fan, that is in their catalog, so far. In April of 2017, it will be celebrating it's 20th anniversary.

So what needs to happen?

A phony baloney 20th Anniversary Re-Master. Maybe some interviews, with Tom and Ed's perspective on the album 20 years later, a radio/club/concert perspective on how this album became so huge. Some unreleased live tape, and maybe a special deluxe package that includes an EP. But most important of all... A vinyl re-issue. The album has become rather scarce out in the open market, and vinyl collecting is becoming quite the thing these days. Time to cash in.

Additionally, it would be fun to see some special concerts that play 'Dig Your Own Hole' in full.

alright have at it y'all

THIS is what I would like to see.

I imagine they would try to distance themselves from being accused of copying Underworld's anniversary releases. But a live highlights disc would be great. I don't get the impression they have tonnes of unreleased material from that era. I may be wrong.

I'd also be interested to hear a collection of contemporary artists doing remixes for each the tracks. There'd undoubtedly be some crap forced in by the label but, for example, a Leon Vynehall remix of Piku would sound just swell.

I don't know. The pessimist in me says there'll be a few articles and that's it.
I think they'd make more of a fuss about Surrender...

The BBC had many specials on Radio1 with the 15th anniversary of Dig your own hole. I'd love to see an Underworld aproach on 20th anniversarys of the Chemical Brothers album(s) but I don't see that happen. Even a re-issue like Music for the Jilted Generation got from XL would be great.

The reason I think it won't happen is that Tom and Ed do things like they see fit. This probably is because their music is owned by their own Freestyle Dust label so there is no record company breathing down their necks for new releases or money making re-issues or greatist hits.

But I surely hope Bosco proposals will become reality. A tour where DYOH is played front to back, with the old school drumcomputer and visuals would be awsome. And in the smaller venues where they played in 1997.

And maybe Ed and Tom should look behind their couch what tracks are still hidden from the DYOH era.

Can't argue with 'Surrender' potentially being more worthy of the honorary treatment, by the numbers I think it has outsold 'Dig Your Own Hole'. However, the impression I get is that majority of people identify 'Dig Your Own Hole'as THE start of The Chemical Brothers (even though it's their sophomore album.) And that in itself is worth honoring. Oh yeah, and it just happens to be a fucking bad ass album.

Furthermore, all this is probably moot, because wasn't it said by Tom during 'Born in The Echoes' interviews that they are sitting on bunch of new unreleased material? Maybe they will jump back in the studio and put out another album instead.

If you would have said "like Fat Of The Land," I would have considered the cost of flying across the Atlantic Ocean to slap you with the back of my hand.

Nah.The re-issue of TFOTL with Added Fat stupid remixes is SHITE (I don't have it being a Prodigy fan). More Music for the Jilted Generation had a descent extra cd with the Radio 1 live recordings.

Is there material from the DYOH era we don't know? It was the time with the double CD singles, BRB and Elektrobank, a good amount of b-sides, a live version of Setting Sun, imo 1 descent remix from the Micronauts. And it was a time when bootlegs where still out there with BEATS, a live 1995 recording at Brixton, being a very good one quality wise. And even recently the 1995 Leicester recording resurfaced on the web.
So I hope Bosco is right but I wonder what could be added.
Same goes for the Surrender anniversary in 3 years time.

I'd be happy with a simple 2-disc remaster including b-sides and remixes. The full-album concert would also be very cool, particularly if it was recorded for purchase like Don't Think.

I know Tom and Ed don't like to look backwards, but DYOH was special and deserves something.

Yummy, a remasterd DYOH would taste so delicous (as well as a remastered EPD!!). I'd like to have one served with a studio version of the dissolve/private psychedelic reel/sympathy for the devil live mix! That's all I ask.

Happy with EPD, Loops Of Fury E.P. and DYOH as they are. The ones they should remaster or at least re-release are the Song To The Siren single, the Fourteen Century Sky E.P. and the My Mercury Mouth E.P. (with both versions of Dust Up Beats, and the one version has to be the full version WN recently shared)

I would absolutely love that, but I would imagine there would be a complication on the use of The Rolling Stones sample. It's one thing to have it intermingled while you play live, it's another when it's sampled and used to be sold for profit.

And if it were to be released, god dammit, get the Out of Control/Don't Fight It, Feel It/ It Doesn't Matter properly released too!

Super limited collectors edition could include:

A replica wig of Tom's former long blonde hair. Along with Super COOL tinted shades. Literally, lowers the temperature around you within a 10 foot radius.

First 50 orders will get a signed copy of Ed Simons autobiography 'It Doesn't Matter Or: How I Learned to Love the Vocal Loop' Complete with Morning Lemon cigarette book mark.

If you purchase 100 albums in a single order, you're invited to a private dinner with Tom and Ed that is catered by Steve Dub and his famous Jerk Chicken.

Why do we have to remaster Exit Planet Dust and DYOH?

They were really well produced. I think material that needs to be reworked is stuff like Prescription Beats, their b-side material from those eras. There is a lot of depth to EPD and DYOH, let's not just make it a wall of noise with no dynamic.

I like it! And as a matter of fact it would probably be a fun idea to have a modern re-take of all the album art (including singles) from both "Dig Your Own Hole" and "Exit Planet Dust"

The idea is to re-release an album that will have a corresponding strong re-market value. I really love "Exit Planet Dust", and I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings when I say this. But isn't it obvious that "Dig Your Own Hole" or "Surrender" are the most iconic albums they have released?

Before anyone jumps, my favorite is "Come With Us". But in no way would I have any expectations of it being re-released.

CWU is my second favorite following DYOH. It's delivers terrible on singles but it works amazing as an album. That's why DYOH is still 1 imo because it does both

No. Star Guitar is good, The Test is effing amazing. But CWU isn't an album of tracks with hits/singles. But it works amazing as a complete album. I allways listen to CWU as a whole. I can listen to DYOH in fragments. IDM/DSTR/GUOILT is a part, K-hole/begin/TPPR is a part, BRB until SS could all be hitsingles.

I've burned a cd for a friend with all the b-sides from the DYOH-era and a couple of remixes, and just inverted the colors for the cover so now it has a white background with the girl in black. I was so excited with it that i've decided to made it also as a wallpaper for my desktop (where it is since a couple of years) :D

Special Edition DYOH should come with a shovel.

For the vinyl version, the middle of the record is solid, so you have to make your own hole in the center to play it.

I think this is a mistake. The "normal" DYOH on thesoundofvinyl has the same two bonus tracks. I could understand Buzz Track as it's a b-side form Setting Sun but Leave Home as a bonus tracks? That's just weird. And you can not have bonus tracks on DYOH as TPPR is the perfect ending.

Something tells me Chicago wouldn't be on the shortlist of places they play, if they even decide to try it. Just give us 1 date in the UK, and it's still a victory (as long as it gets recorded).

But seriously, even if they had the slightest of feelings of trying something like this, now is the time while your audience is still active and willing.

Imagine if they do a revival of the 1997 shows, with the same gear setup and setlist... A man can dream

This!

If they ever come to the US, I would prefer a small or medium size venue. Dont want a big outside show. 5 cities would be good including Cali!

No mention anywhere about an interview. Lauren Laverne barely mentioned the album. Just once before playing Piku, then again after - saying they'll be playing tracks throughout the day. I don't think it was a 'let's get the Brothers in to talk about it again!' kind of celebration. Just acknowledging that it's 20 years old.

They have a lot of Album Of The Day in the past weeks. It's mostly playing the complete album throughout the day, every show plays a couple if tracks with a small introducing.

I agree! Im starting to think that its just random djs playing some of the tracks throughout the day. Not a true anniversary celebration. Besides, the bbc did one a couple of years back which was better with tom and ed sharing thoughts about it.

Nothing to see here i guess!

The singles are up on Qobuz in 16 bit lossless, but nothing new on them. I don't know if they've been remastered or what.

My only issue is Block Rockin' Beats and Elektrobank being £12.47 each. A bit pricey for a several track EP. In case you wanna save a couple of pounds, if you purchase the tracks separately, it'll actually be slightly cheaper.

Oh, and Elektrobank comes with both Not Another Drugstore and Not Another Drugstore  (Planet Nine Mix).

Well I bought the Where Do I Begin 2 track since I do not have that and then I just bought Not Another Drugstore and Planet Nine Mix to A/B them with my FLAC CD rips and they are the same masters. I don't hear anything to make me think they were touched and the volumes match.

Crumbs. You can buy these CD singles for pennies from Discogs or Amazon, and I suspect many of us have. With the possible exception of the radio edit of WDIB, I see no reason to buy any of these. I'm actually offended that they think they can charge that much for old, previously released material.

Yeah, the prices for those two are a bit absurd. Where Do I Begin is only a couple of pounds and Setting Sun is a little over £3. It's pretty dumb if a release costs less if you buy the tracks individually.

Well, no. The edit version's intro is about 30 seconds shorter, and the peak is about 30 seconds shorter too. It gets to the "jackhammer" beat or whatever you call it and then fades out. Edit version also doesn't have the intro sound effect (but you can still hear the tail end of it at the start).

I'm happy to finally hear it even if it's just an edit... I've tried putting Where Do I Begin on a lot of mixtapes but it's tough to handle the runtime and outro / annoying to have to do my own fade. So this is nice. But it's also not that interesting of an edit... all of it could be done in a sequencer using the album version.

Also, having both mixes of Not Another Drugstore on Elektrobank is pretty weird. I mean, they're the same song for 4 minutes. Planet Nine is cool as a curiosity / trainspot from the Anti-Nazi mix, but it doesn't really add anything alongside the original mix.

If some effort had been put in, perhaps the full length version of WDIB could have had the Reel intro/segue properly removed. Might have made it an interesting curiosity for fans/completists.

Oh look, I've just spotted the Live 05 EP on Spotify. Never heard that before.

The UK 7Digital store has only 3 of the 4 singles, no Setting Sun for some reason, in FLAC. Elektrobank and Block Rockin' Beats are only about 10 pounds on there. The Setting Sun single is on 7Digital but as its original '97 release, not dated with April 10th, 2017 like the others.

Junodownload has them as well, but don't look that much cheaper than Qobuz.

SO DISAPPOINTED!!!!

Received this email this morning:

Delivery 1 of your order has been cancelled because payment was unsuccessful. When your order was placed we had an authorization to debit the payment which lasts for a month. When we came to process your order this run out so we tried to re-authorize payment but payment re-authorization this second time was not successful.

Usually when this happens it is because there aren't sufficient funds available but you would have to contact your payment provider to get confirmation on this as we don't get given any specific info when this happens. If you would still like to receive the item(s) please place a new order for them on the site.

A few months back my CC was stolen and I got a new one with a new number.  Through all of the chaos of that debacle I completely forgot to update payment for this purchase so I guess it's technically my fault.  But I would have at least thought they would have tried to contact me via email first to tell me my payment wasn't going through before cancelling it.  Instead they just went ahead and cancelled it and now I can't re-order it.  If anyone has an extra or knows a way to get a copy to the US for the same price or close to it as I paid before that would be amazing! I paid about $35 US Dollars.  Any help would be appreciated. I've been anxiously awaiting this album all year!

Since it's uncertain there is no bonus tracks of any sort, I might be willing to part with my copy if it's just the original album track listing.

Was there going to be a serial number on these, or at least anything special beyond the silver colored vinyl? If not, it sounds like it was an attempt to throw the EU people a bone after the US only catalog colored release.

I love the album to death, but I already have the Astralwerk's colored copy from earlier this year. Excuse my blasphemy, but it seems pointless to have 4 different copies of Dig Your Own Hole that all have the same track listing...

Bosco, if it ends up being just the Silver Vinyl and no real bonus features, if you are willing to part with it, I'd gladly pay you for it.  I guess we'll know soon enough.  Thanks in advance.  Pretty disappointed with how they handled this. The fact that it is limited edition and that it ended up being sold out you'd think they'd make an attempt to contact me to update the payment info.

If you read it carefully, the copy/paste from the chemsite ends with "x chemical hq"

The Buzz Tracks and Leave Home stuff comes from Neorev and thesoundofvinyl.com

Why the hell should Leave Home be a bonus track on DYOH?
The only possible Bonus Tracks would be Buzz Tracks, These Beats Are Made For Breaking, Morning Lemon, Not Another Drugstore, Prescription Beats and maybe Loops Of Fury & The Best Part Of Breaking Up, Otter Rock or Here Come The Drums

Maybe the sound of vinyl has these two exclusive tracks and everyone else doesn't,but that wouldn't make sense either!

Edit: they were copied from (i think SOV or Facebook) and pasted. these links say the album contains the extra tracks!

Well why did SoundofVinyl have it listed then? All I'm implying is it seems too random to select those two tracks. And lets not discount the fact that Chems HQ directed people to buy it from them.

Thats a mystery we will never find out unfortunately!

SOV said it was an error! It accidentally posted the two tracks on their website, but was immediately taken down within 24hrs!

Hey, can you find out what type of files come with the download code? 320kbps MP3, standard 16 bit WAV/FLAC, or 24 bit WAV/FLAC???

wav format only!

I just got it in today!

Its more of a gray than silver color! The album cover has a textured paper feel to it unlike the glossy paper found on others.

Has a hype sticker on the left corner about the 20th anniversary.

And as I mentioned before, a DL code, that's from the sound of vinyl website. Everything looks good so far...

...but they shipped it in flatpack cardboard. My album has my corners bent. WTF!

As I went to my favourite recordstore in Amsterdam last Sunday I was very surprised to see that they were selling the 20th anniversary Edition. So I had no problems getting one. I was also very surprised that the record looks more grey then silver :(

The hype sticker looks like silver though  :)

@inchemwetrust: annoying about the bent corners. I have the feeling this is going to happen with my order from TSOV (didn't received mine yet), thats why I bought a second one which is in perfect shape (they had like 5 in stock).

As for catalogue number/etchings: No "XDUSTLP2", but "MIKE'S - THE EXCHANGE" is etched in the runout grooves ;)

Good for you for getting a backup copy!

Im a little disappointed about the grey color not actually being silver.

As for the album, i shot juno uk an email with complaint and pics of my bent album. They said "keep it, well send you another one"....

As first i was like cool.....then i thought...NOOOOOOOO!😭

Got my DYOH 20th vinyl today. Love to have a brand new DYOH and don't mind doubledipping on the 20th anniversary edition. But boy what a come down. What an awfull gray colour. Like Toxic said,
the sticker implies a different kind of silver.

Or like Inchem posted before

maybe this kind of silver perhaps?  YUMMMMMMMMMMM! SILVER!

So i'm keeping the seal around it and not playing the vinyl. Just looked and it and getting the download code.

P.S. has there ever been a remastered version on cd? What borders me from the first time I bought DYOH the cuts between the track aren't that well done. When you play track 2 DYOH, it starts with the last squeek of the siren from track 1 BRB.

Cheers for the info! How does the download sound? Any different from the original master? I was wondering if this was just a straight reissue or if any remastering was done.
