Rather than continuing a little off topic on the singles recap thread, let's talk about C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L. here (and the track deserves its own topic anyway :D)
In case you didn't follow, the track is finally getting released in a new Japanese edition of Born in the Echoes, on the 27th of September ! (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/UICW-10007?utm_source=MAIL&utm_medium=text-artistmail&utm_campaign=The%20Chemical%20Brothers-20160711-person_prod-UICW-10007)
In case you REALLY didn't follow, C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L. is a track the Chems have been using for 4 years in their DJ Sets, most of the time as the opening track :

Here's an older version, that I like more :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AU6yNyVV7-E
Correct me if I'm mistaken but I think that just as the above video fades out, the video here continues the track. If so, that means that CHEMICAL is about ten minutes long.
*EDIT*. Ok Ben has edited his post now. I meant the first of the two videos above.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUC54Zo3pCk
I still haven't seen the Chemical Brothers live yet, but I do occasionaly listen to some live versions of songs on youtube. That said, this is my first time properly listening to this song and damn is it funky. Really looking forward to getting a clean, good quality version of it. Not sure how I feel about 10 minutes though, seems like it could get kinda repetitive outside of a live performance.

I think it will be a bit shorter (6, 7 minutes ?) because the end loops for a long time on both versions
EDIT : the older version is actually
just 8 minutes long. Minus the ~1mn of looping at the end, it would be 6 or 7 minutes long.
Great news Ben!
I think this is the first time that'll actually buy 2 copies of the same album. The additional remixes on the 2nd disc is worth the purchase!
Maybe this gets a release as EBW
It certainly would make one hell of an EBW!
You forgot about last version of it?

Ok, my bad, I didn't take into account looping, or indeed the 'Scale' type intro which i guess won't be on the official release.
What's your source on this exact timing?

Exciting news! :o
Really, the entire second disc is awesome with a C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L. cherry on top.
Oh, that's exciting news! I'm curious how the finished tune turns out to be. Maybe they reworked the "climax" part a little but I doubt it somehow. Anyways, can't wait to sing along the C the H the E the M the I the C the A the L the Bruvas, the Bruvas!
What do yoou guys think, are there any plans of releasing C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L internationally? Or just as a bonus track on the japanese special edition? NEED TO HAVE THAT TRACK!!!!! :'(
Even Supeflash hasn't been released yet. Maybe they're putting out a new EP at the end of the year, that would be awesome ...
On twitter Ed or Tom mentioned that Superflash was already released on Don't Think and that there are no other releases planned for this song (it was some time ago and they might change their mind one day*)
I think that it will remain exclusive on the Japanese edition. The songs Don't Think and Purqouis were also only released on the Japanese version of Further.
*One of them also said that there are no plans on releasing C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L. Glad they didn't keep that promise ;)

Yep, you're correct.
Just preordered the Japan tour edition to go with the rest of my Japan editions of Chems albums. I already own the Japan edition of Born In The Echoes. I love the Modern Masters editions EMI Music Japan did. They took the vinyl versions of the albums and shrunk them to CD size. They come in something similar to Born In The Echoes digisleeve, but much thicker and higher quality materials. Plus you get all of the individual vinyl labels for each record side as a separate art piece. They did from Exit Planet Dust to Come With Us and included Brothers Gonna Work It Out. I wish the rest of the albums had these Mini LP editions because I hate jewel cases.
Did anyone got to hear the C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L. track? Release date is today ;)
SOMEONE NEEDS TO UPLOAD THIS TRACK!!!!!! I NEED TO HEAR IT, I CAN'T FIND ANYTHING ABOUT THIS TRACK :o :o :o :o
I guess it will take some time.

I tried itunes Japan last night - as it was already Friday in Japan - but the tour edition isn't there. Seems to be CD only. A jewel case this time around.
What does it sound like? Is it the version that we already know from their DJ Sets?
So, has anyone received their CD ? ???
Or has anyone heard the actual track ? (if so, well... you know what to do ;) )
Silence in all pirate communities, even from russian comrades living in Japan.
DAMN! Why can't they release those new tracks internationally as an EP or something? Always the same japanese bonus shit, I wanna hear C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L!!! :'(

So they omitted that synth? Hm, I liked it too. It added something subtle, a thing the chems are great at.
I liked this version the best and didn't realise there were 3 versions. They're playing with our heads. Maybe the like changing the track every now and then as they evolve there DJ sets? I feel like with the released one the synth for that is too stiff and loses rhythm from the funky build up at the start. But I'm greatful to hear it properly and appreciate the rest of it with the cool vocal samples. " I need to be part of something " I really liked the harsh break down with the 'brotheeeeerrrrss' part too and then went into a cyborg meltdown which isn't in the latest one too.

Yes, and there are vocal samples all over the place. There's the "I needed to be part of something" that we can hear in the DJ set videos, and near the end, there's a very faint one that goes something like
- I came here to tell you the truth
- What do you mean?
- I'll tell you, old man, [...]
Can't really understand the rest, it's very faint and covered by the music

Overlooked this one. Damn, the killed that part too? This probably was the most "chemical" part in it. :(
It's probably not in the video. It's difficult to hear in the actual CD track so I assume in a DJ set it would be even harder
Does it sound anything like this version from 2013, without the last part?

Bummer that the insane breakdown isn't in the final version, which is a bit toned down compared to the the DJ version.

I think it's the big bass beat at 1:23
Yeah actually I might be full of shit. But the guitar sounds very Daft Punk to me. (or Stardust-y, Music Sounds Better With You).
Thank you guys! I quite like that they gave that break at 4:20 a little time to breath by turning off the beat (opposed to their DJ set version clips) like I wanted back when I heard it for the first time. I believe it's got a much better effect that way. Also, that little hint of a melody with that synth that comes in at about 2:55 is really nice. Can't say why but it sounds a bit familiar, perhaps sampled? But it's more likely that my senses play tricks on me.

This song is gold. Should have been the opening song to the album
This tune is insane!!! :o
I liked the funkyness of the first version more but still it's a killer track. Hope Erol Alkan playes it when I go to see him next month.
This Japanese Born in the Echoes tour edition is the first Japanese really worht buying for me with both BITE exclusive tracks (Direct Buki & C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L), both BITE chemical remixes (Go Edge of control and Wide Open by light of the moon mix) and all the singles remixes. Nice!!!
Makes me wonder what's in store for Europe/US releases in the near future
Yeah, I'm really tempted to buy this one too. It's at about €37 right now and I was a little hesitant. But all those remixes of Wide Open (esp. Tom's) and CHEMICAL alone are totally worth the purchase.
Btw, do you guys also think that the bell sound at the beginning of CHEMICAL is "borrowed" or at least inspired by A Modern Midnight Conversation?

AH THIS SONG IS SO GOOD
This is the kind of Chems music I want to hear more of - rough and ready. There's so much imperfectly polished sound in there, synths with weird harmonics that aren't perfectly managed or rounded of, larger than life mastering, all sorts of "WHOA" effects. Damn this might be one of the best BITE era tracks, fantastic for being last our the gate!
Reminds me of Come With Us and some of their wonkier uncommon b-sides like No Need, Delik, The Duke, Silver Drizzle...
Not only is the intro percussion from AMMC... I think the percussion in the thick of the song is straight from EBW8!

I agree. This bonus track is superb and splendidly joins the ranks of the tracks you mentioned (man I love No Need and Silver Drizzle. Pourqoi as a bonus track was a little meh though with Further). If b-sides on maxi cds were still a thing, this is the type of track I'd be on the look-out for. I can still remember when I was trying to get Spring on a physical medium here, but all there was were those Believe remixes and Giant (which is awesome too).

If C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L. would have made it on the orignal album release,it would've been in my top 3 from that album. Reminds me of the 'Da Funk' as all of you have mentioned. Its good to have a new chems track added to my Chems playlist on my phone.
Yet another track that should of been given to us originally on the album (example: Dont Think)
Not sure if there's a long version of it, and this track also sounds a tad different than the dj sets played, but nevertheless,i hope I get to hear it played soon live if they ever do a dj set here in the states (which is overdue)
Now we wait for the radio 1 premier with Tom interview.

Not me. I hadn't purchased any of these yet and am thrilled to get them all on one CD. The only downside for me is I already own the BITE deluxe edition, but even then, I'm adding value with Direct Buki.
I do wish they would figure out a better way to release the remixes and bonus tracks on discs for international release. There's clearly still a market, but the paying fans are the ones that suffer.
My copy arrived today. Very happy. :music
Not sure if anyone's mentioned it, but this Japan Special Edition comes with a full lyric insert that is quite thorough. It lists all tracks from the original Japan version including Direct Buki and Wo Ha, but not C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L. from the new second disc.
I'm not sure which is better: "Wo Ha" written in succession about 2 dozen times, or the end of Taste of Honesy listed as "(lots of humming but no actual words)".

I can't find any information on it.
It's not on Amazon or in the US iTunes store yet...

Only the edited version though, maybe the full song will remain exclusive to the Japan BITE?
The artwork reminds me of the EPD/DYOH-era.

I never said that there is a physical version.
This was a reply to Enjoyed who wrote earlier that he hasn't found anything on Amazon.
I'd go crazy for a physical release, too.
It's on Juno Download (http://www.junodownload.com/products/chemical/3257096-02/?track_number=1) now but again, it's the edit. If anyone was gonna sell a longer version, Juno would be a good bet.
I remember Beatport was the first place to get the extended version of Go when it was released, but so far CHEMICAL isn't on there at all.
I'm surprised they didn't decide to do it as a little package, say: the edit, the full length version and Version 2 (unreleased) as an alternative mix. Maybe release a limited 12" with version 2 and 3 (I'm assuming there were basically three versions of the track) and call it EBW12. Oh well...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvmld_AqTfQ
I just saw the facebook post about this. Maybe the chems want to see a response to this radio edit first, then maybe then we'll get a physical release (1000 copies I suppose)
Maybe there's gonna be a video of C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L... that would be cool!

QuoteGreetings Chemical Brothers & Sisters!
It's time for all the latest news from Chemical HQ.
'C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L'
The C, the H, the E, the M, the I, the C, the A, the L: The brothers!
The Chemical Brothers have just released the new dance floor banger 'C-h-e-m-i-c-a-l'!
The track has been a favourite from the band's live sets as they've toured the world the past months,
so by popular demand they've decided to make it available digitally.

Seems like the full lenght stays in Japan :(
This is great. It's like releasing Base 6 as an unexpected 2003 single! I'd love to see a 12" with that artwork backed with something. @Skyscraper there would be 4 versions as the released version's different from the 3 they DJed with.
Yeah, 10 minute Go, techno Radiate, 3 C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L demos... let's see them release their entire demo collection why not?

Quote from: Csar on Sep 30, 2016, 11:19Oh, I now that I see this version again: did they keep that ugly "so let your body rock" sample?
Csar - I've been processing this comment for a month now and I love the sample. I'm probably biased since I used to play Freestyle's 'Automatic' in my earliest sets, but it works for me. In reading your comment I wondered if nostalgia had taken hold. Perhaps it has, but after a month of plays, I love C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L (and all its parts) as much as I did on day 1. Probably more.
Love or hate the sample, for me it's the most exciting track to come out in years.
BTW - I'm not sure if this came up on a pre-C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L thread, but does anyone else remember BPD/Jimmy? It's not technically a sample, but it's an influence to say the least.

I think it punctuates the track nicely. It's not very 'deep', but then the track is meant to be a DJ intro that says: "Here's the Chems, get dancing", so... yeah!

Good spot! :)
This may be a longer shot, and comes under the "that reminds me of" heading rather than, "that's definitely an influence", but the bit around 4.11 in CHEMICAL where the spell-out goes echoey reminds me of the SAFETY spell-out on this track at 0.38. Could just be a coincidence though.

Sorry, I somehow overlooked your comment. Ha, really, a month? That was not my intention :). Well, to be honest, it doesn't really bother me as much anymore as it did when it first surfaced in their later DJ sets after the previous versions were around on yt.
It's not even that it might be a particular bad sample (I love oldschool tunes/ samples and there's nothing wrong with a healthy dose of nostalgia btw ;) !!!). On the contrary, it totally works with its original in my opinion (I was a little harsh in my previous posts). But in the track's context it felt goofy and out of place to me.
Now that it's out, I can live with it and it certainly doesn't diminish the appreciation I have for this track. It's a killer tune that would make a worthy candidate for the beloved EBW series!
Quote from: Csar on Nov 07, 2016, 23:23Ha, really, a month?
Haha...maybe that's a bit of hyperbole. You posted the original comment a little over a month ago at a point when I had only heard the video versions. Once I got the Japanese exclusive CD I literally thought, "Csar called this sample is ugly?!? Is it corny? Am I missing something (becasue of nostalgia)?". Then I'd think..."No way." The more I listened, the more I needed to respond.
Good to hear you've come around. And even if you didn't... hey, we're all individuals with our own opinions. Either way, your casual comment stuck in my brain for some reason. ;D

Just in comparison, 'We Are The Night' was shortly finished after 'Push The Button', even within two years! So let's be optimistic ... ;)

Maybe it's just me, but that video in no way captures the excitement of the song. It looked like electronic muppets and mime dancers that have been done before (but I'm sure it would work better in a live atmosphere). Actually, I think this video would have been a great opportunity for live footage if not something more original. It's a shame, because Wide Open and 'Deserted were pretty interesting.
Still extremely thankful for the song.

Its like when SIFSD came out with that cheesy visual, and later, a REAL video was made for the track.
Im hoping the same will apply for this.
What could this mean?
Crazy thought: This video is labeled "visual" on their homepage. Could this mean this is going to go into their live set, being on of the new changes?
these images are great, really well done..why the negativity?
Because we are hungry for a new high quality video like Setting Sun, Life Is Sweet or The Golden Path. Not only just visuals - even though they look great.

Dang! Sorry, I'm getting old. I was listening to it on YT the other day and found that to be new (to me). I somehow missed Satur8's post.
BDP's Jimmy was a huge song from my teenage years (late 80s / Philadelphia suburbs). It became an earworm in my head every time you guys posted live videos of C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L. Fortunately that stopped once I picked up the Japanese special edition of BITE for maximum replays.

Not that this is related, but I'm kinda bummed that it appears nothing will be done with Dig Your Own Hole's 20th anniversary.
Obviously, it was great they just reissued the entire catalog on vinyl, but it would have been nice to see some type of special bonus content or interview disc to surround and celebrate the album in some way. The timing felt right especially for this upcoming April/Record Store Day.
C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L will have to do.

Except that it's people who already buy records a lot, and are stupid (sorry everyone, myself included) to spend way too much on a 'unique' item. Their idea of trying to get regular folks interested in vinyl isn't really working so well.
Also, unfortunately, there's a large chunk of the RSD store goers that are there to buy the rare stuff and sell it for a profit. Again, not quite what the guys behind the event had in mind.
Still. It's nice to get up early and go wait in line with other (mostly) passionate music fans. And I always make a day of it - listening through vinyl I haven't played in a while.
I also have an order of Skint and Fluke records that arrived on Friday that I'm working my way through.
Did someone say the 3xLP Promo of Squirt???
Some good points there, Mr Enjoyed. I didn't bother this year. I decided I've had enough of queueing up for ages in order to throw stupid money at a record shop for stuff I don't really need.
They should be queueing up to take my money! Also there used to be live bands in London's Berwick street, so if you didn't get what you wanted you could still have some fun. That's stopped now.

Last year, when I eventually got into Rough Trade East in Brick Lane, an extra employee for the day told me that the staff had taken first dibs on the rare stuff the night before - which was partially why the stuff I wanted was already gone. Now I love that shop but THAT did not impress me.

I hope they start doing some reunion/nostalgia stuff like everyone else is doing...
im not sure if this flew over peoples heads but Justin Warfield (NAD) did the vocals! (the credits are on the back cover...DUH!)
But the question remains....did he do the vocals recently prior to release, or did the Chems have his vocals under lock and key this whole time since they last worked together???
I think the chems kept it for ages and were waiting for the right time to use it!

Genuinely thought it was all CGI composited on top of a mo-cap suit. Very cool that someone crafted those as costumes.

This one makes me laugh :D

I know, right? Thought the same. Great find, Pum.
Yeah, it's new great collaboration for Chems, so, keep it up, T&E&A&M!
For those who are interested in such things, I might have found a sample used in C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L.
I've recently came upon the song "Entschuldigung" by C.O.N. (The Chems played it at their DJ sets) and the part from 2:43 on sounded familiar:

I think T&E might have used it for the beat in their song, starting at 1:24, right after the "I need to be part of something" sample. What do you think?
Btw, there's a second Chems connection here, albeit more far-fetched, but the high-pitched sounds starting at 2:12 (and with a slightly lower pitch at 2:27) reminded me of the awesome transition between Got Glint and Wide Open at the end of their 2018 tour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HId9LXOXZ_k&feature=youtu.be&t=3655
speaking of samples, I dunno if anyone has mentioned this (as I'm too lazy to scroll through past comments) but the intro beats are the same pattern as the ones in A Modern Midnight Conversation (possibly taken directly from AMMC without the bassline).

Seems very thin to me. I think it's just two similar sounding basslines.

It was mentioned a while back but thanks for reminding me to finally check it out! Definitely the same bell sample/pattern, but maybe pitched up a bit in CHEMICAL?
On another note, I never realized it was Justin
Robertson Warfield on this track but coincidentally I ended up sequencing Not Another Drugstore after CHEMICAL in a lengthy chems playlist I've been working on because I thought they went so well together..
Listening to No Geography, I keep getting reminded of this song! Going back to it, C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L. almost sounds like it belongs in the No Geography "era" more than Born in the Echoes. Eve of Destruction, Bango, Got To Keep On, Free Yourself, and MAH all sound like they were cut from the same cloth.
