Title: "Chemical Brothers Live 1997" VHS?
Post by: Crotor on Jun 11, 2019, 21:27
Anyone ever come across a VHS labeled "Chemical Brothers Live 1997"? It's audience footage from a right hand (facing the stage) balcony? Definitely a full show, definitely a 1997 show, and IIRC, it was billed as being a NYC show, though it's not made clear on any of the packaging.

Anyway, I got ahold of a copy around 2000 and have only watched it once, with an eye towards digitizing it eventually. But here we are in 2019, and everything I spent so much effort looking for in the late 90s/early Aughts is already digitized and uploaded to YouTube or SoundCloud or *something* out there, and I thought I'd check and see if anyone else has come across this footage in digital form before I bite the bullet and pay for the service or invest in equipment myself. My Google-Fu is strong, but I haven't been able to turn up any indication of this recording, in video or audio form, existing anywhere on the internet in 2019.

Sounds quite interesting. Does it look sort of professional or like a private recording?
If you think the quality would justify it and it wouldn't mean too much of financial burden, it would be cool if you could digitalize it?

It's definitely an amateur recording. I'm definitely going to digitize it (it has the proto-HBHG!). Just wanted to try and double-check that it's not already out there digitally before I do so (literally just this morning found another VHS that I intended to digitize already on YouTube).

Oh damn.

No, this doesn't exist online anywhere. The only footage of this live out there is audio from Osaka 1997.

I have said VHS. It's shown in the pic I sent a while back of my collection. I have ripped the audio from it years ago. It's a decent audio, but very late 90s quality of the audio/video.

Thanks for the note on how to pull the video. I'll work on making that happen. Going to play dumb here, but assuming I need some sort of software to pull the video from. Any suggestions?

FYI, I've shared the audio with Conn6orsuper117 to load to youtube. Enjoy!! It's the full set from beginning to end!! Just re-listened to it over the weekend and it's much a better quality than I remember.

**just looked at the link... I see it comes with software, however, I am on a mac and it doesn't look compatible for that. Any other suggestions?

Edit 2: according to setlists, this is supposed to takes place in Hammerstein Ballroom In NYC, considering the title says 1997-05-17

My friend and I made an astonishing discovery listening to this recording, the bit from I Take LSD is just a filtered version of the synth intro from Not Another Drugstore!!

here's my take on the remake, it required a bit of editing to the intro and it's nowhere near perfect...(we may or may not end up remaking the whole mix)

boldcaptain...

Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.

boldcaptain, you don't have to answer this, but I would like to say...  I hope someone in the Daft Punk camp tracked you down and properly compensated you for your Coachella 2006 "effort".

Taking account of all the factors that were happening at that time, and what happened as result, there is no doubt in my mind your Daft Punk recording has far more influence than just being another bootleg. Legality be damned.

Thanks to all of those who are contributing with these older recordings. Simply awesome stuff!

Is it THE boldcaptain? TEH bold captain we have to be grateful to for the 2005 coachella and the 2003 Centro Fly DJ set recording?! You have now idea (or probably you do) how big a deal that was at a time when we were practically stuck on a lonely live recording island, longing for any coconut dub that fell from the heavens. I remember that time so vividly, when I was soaking in all bits and pieces of live audio I could come by (the mixingbowl anyone?).

Welcome aboard, captain!

Post by: boldcaptain on Aug 15, 2019, 14:25
Thanks for all platitudes folks...
I was soooo mad missing the Forest Hills show, then my man MTech 77 manages a killer pull, on video no less, from up front. AMAZING!
Hugh props for that!

As for Daft, at the time, Pedro, their manager, banned all talk of the cochella bootleg on the Daft Punk board. Believe me he WAS NOT happy... And probably because the sound was just flawless... Then, and excuse me cuz i can't remember the name of the person, from the coachella board, that solicited video clips from other attendees, and pieced, and oh my god what a job that must have been, pieced together a complete show on video, from what must have been hundreds of clips, synced it to my audio, and blew up the message board with its release.
And Pedro lost his mind... He wanted my head...  Just about every article on the internet about Coachella 2006 had a reference to the now infamous video bootleg release from the most talked about set from that year. Then he had to release an official video from that same tour, Daft Punks "Alive 2007" recorded in Paris later the next year.
So while the fans may have appreciated the video boot release, no one else in the Daft camp was pleased with our work..

But thats what makes it so special, its the pinnacle of bootleg taping, to get the powers that be to pay attention and rub their noses in it a little...
Guy and Thomas are tops in the electronic dance movement to me, and having had a hand in the bootleg was pleasing enough for me, and the thought that little ol' me (with a whole lot of internet help) could force a major release from a major artist is just, again the pinnacle of what bootleg taping could bring, and oh so satisfying...

As for Chem Base, in the ten year absence of the chems (here in america) i fell of the board, cuz i used to be on it, but i guess the data base changed and i never re upped, till the boys came back to NY, thought the time was right. Then going thru some stuff I found the 97 show and knew where it would bet appreciated, which is how i got back here.

So is there anyone that go thru this file and give me track timings and titles, and i can put the flac files up on Dime or Mixing bowl for the lossless community???

I didn't go thru the file that was posted here previously, and i am unaware of any other New York show in 97 that that video may have come from. Someone has already stated that it seems the video audio is different from what i posted, so i don't know where that video may have come from.
Also i was late getting in. so the show is in progress (Song for the Siren) when i started recording, missing about 20 minutes of the start, which is present on the previous file.

Thanks folks.. and as always, more to come....

I Come back from camp to this!?! :o its beautiful!

those cubes on the ceiling look suspiciously similar to the ones from the gig in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s72CETN9Uak

although I don't recognize any key features from Hammerstein

but those loops of fury visuals, oh my goodness! this could be a stretch but they must've been inspiration for Escape velocity from an archive somewhere.

So Leave home's visuals are the true origin for several of Flashback's visuals, Interesting.

Elektrobank's outro visuals must've been recycled and used for The Golden path in 2007.

Don't get me wrong its great to see the encore in its full, but Im kinda sad to see HBHG/Music:Response used only eyeballs. was kinda hoping for Giant text reading MUSIC! and RESPONSE!

The Reel looking beautiful as always.

Be awesome to try and get the best audio from this VHS to see if I can clean it up and bring it up some. I currently got my TV volume at 50 with the YouTube app when it is usually at 14-16. Audio is pretty quiet on YT. I haven't tried the direct file.

They absolutely have, and I'm really proud of Smith & Lyall's development, but this also drove home to me the extent to which what they're interested in doing now is an extension of what they did back then. eg: The opening shot of the "Escape Velocity" visuals is basically an HD remaster of that blurry traffic footage from "Loops Of Fury"! We went from static images of ant silhouettes to a swarm of cockroaches crawling across the screen! And "The Private Psychedelic" is basically identical in its 2019 execution (https://youtube.com/watch?v=V5z9Goxop0E&t=32m53) to how they did it in 1997 (https://youtube.com/watch?v=yclUNGDLozI&t=1h27m27s), minus a few clowns and plus a few thousand pixels of image resolution.

(Which is to say nothing of the music! All those live-only trigger sounds that made it from NYC nightclubs to today's biggest festival stages!)

Yes the video is really bad, it'd be super nice to get a proper transfer from the VHS.

I've made too an enhanced version of the audio, it sounds pretty similar to @csar version (to my ears).

those cubes on the ceiling look suspiciously similar to the ones from the gig in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s72CETN9Uak

That because they are part of the chemicals stage design in. Remember them being at the front of the stage to the left and right at Brixton in the early days.

Thanks Crotor for getting this beautiful video transferred. I would say the transfer is pretty good knowing how shocking VHS tape can be! Great camera angle  Tom in action  hammering the MPC in leave home and song to the siren. Love watching the faders in action. You get a real sense of Tom crafting the channels soloing, FXing and mashing up.  I really miss those early days seeing the brothers playing to a small room

I made an MKV with all 3 audio, default is from csar.
As second stream the original audio and as 3rd mine (it's a bit more processed).
Enjoy!

I know you guys mean well, but an amateur shot, 22 year old recording on VHS tape, and we're complaining about quality?::)  We're lucky the tape wasn't eaten on playback.

Thank you Crotor for taking the time to transfer this. And Cheers for the enhanced audio version Csar/Mannix.

Thought Tom's shirt said "Bomb the Bass" but I think it says "Bomb the Past", is that a reference to something?

I concur, the quality for a (privately?) recorded gig that was transfered to and from VHS is as good as it gets. I'm just glad we are even able to get a glimpse back to 1997, especially with a viewing angle like that!

Thanks Mannix, I think your mix is crisper than mine! Thanks for the various audio stream version.

You're welcome, it was a pleasure 8)

The gig is a rare gem and we are so lucky for this unexpected gift, thanks again Crotor!
Don't get me wrong, I'm not "complaining" about the quality.
As Bosco said we are lucky the tape wasn't eaten in the process.
But an expert eye notices immediately the encoder was not setup at its best.
Can't be sure without actually seeing the original but my bet is the video lost really a lot, there are massive blobs of mpeg macroblocks that shouldn't be there.
Damn this VHS still rocks after so many years.
Most of the CD and DVD that I mastered during that period, when I take them out the sleeve they end up in shreds... and they were selling it like they'd last longer than any tape tsk
Anyway in case another transfer is attempted I'd be happy to support in the encoder configuration :)

After wading through the thickets of the shady Redbubble reprint market, I discovered an interview that apparently only survived on Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/photos/mpeopleandheathersmall/4539468760) which suggests it's from a series of slogans/merch-ready advertisements for Deconstruction Records, devised by label head Peter Hadfield. Deconstruction was founded by a bunch of Haçienda vets and as we know Tom & Ed were fans of the Nude Night, which I imagine is how that connection happened (plus they had a remix out around that time for Deconstruction act Lionrock, which probably helped).

Hell of a find Champi.

Tom was on Deconstruction Records as a part of Ariel, they released Rollercoaster, T-Baby, and all but their earliest singles through them. Deconstruction also helped hook up a few of the earliest Chemical Brothers live shows when they were still the Dust Brothers in 94 / 95.

I think it looks great, just wish it was a little louder on YouTube. I have to turn my TV app up to 50 when watching when normally my TV volume is on 10-16. Be nice to not change the video and blow out my speakers when the next video is at normal volume. ;)

Crotor requested that I also upload the video to my channel, I doubled the volume so hopefully its loud enough

I literally have just finished watching this gig and bloody hell, what incredible footage!
I especially loved seeing the guys hammering the mixing desk. And I'm probably late to the party with this but I never knew that 'Hey Boy Hey Girl' & 'Music:Response' were played this early!!
Thank you so much for the upload. What great memories of that era.
Cheers!

1. Thanks to all for:

A. Your work on improving the/deploying said improved audio

B. Proving to my wife that my case of fandom is not the most severe

2. Just looked at the analytics for my original upload. Hella surprised at the Russian and Ukrainian views. Is that typical for Chems fandom content?

The dream of 90's electronica is still alive for a bunch of enthusiastic Slavs who lowkey bankroll the continued careers of its notable artists - this (https://youtube.com/watch?v=WRZGx9AQxyc&t=1h00m41s) is what they did the last time the Chems came to town.

Ha, I hope transferring a VHS tape isn't considered over the top fandom :)

As for the Russian/ Ukrainian views, those are most likly spammers who have been flooding the site for some weeks now. This is not the Prodigy we're talking about :D

No.

I'm admin of a Chems group in Russian social network VK and posted this video there:

Then I'll take it back and would like to apologize. I thought the torrent of spam bots lately was a plausible cause. Great to see there are lots of Russian and Ukrainian fans enjoying the Chems.

Hey Sneaker, I could upload the file Mannix provided that has all 3 audio tracks integrated in 6x 300MB archives? Would that be ok?
