Title: 2016 tour expectations and predictions
Post by: Ben_j on Mar 25, 2016, 22:27
A little more than two months left before the kickoff of the 2016 chems tour, with less Adam, more Ed and hopefully some changes from the 2015 setlist !
What do you want to see included or removed from the 2015 live set ?

What I'd like :
- Come With Us ! as the opening or as the opening for an encore
- The return of the "breaks" part early on in the set, with Music:Response, Song to the Siren, etc
- The return of The Big Jump part in Do it Again
- More visuals, specifically for the tracks that don't have visuals : Reflexion, the Acid Children segue, The Sunshine Underground, Block Rockin Beats
- No more Swoon
- Piku/Playground !
- Longer Escape Velocity ! Starting with the intro, instead of taking the track from the middle
- A surprise like Problem/Question (aka The Animal Track), My Elastic Eye, or an obscure B-side that only fans will identify
- Some of Tom's solo work ! Nothing But Pleasure or the Klaxons remix would fit so well before/after Under the Influence

Return of Das Spiegel or it's visuals
Surprise Flashback
Pills please!
Chemical Threeway
Full on Acid Clown visuals (not just the YOU'RE ALL MY CHILDREN NOW)
More experimental setlist (deviating from the same formula used since 2007)
Return of the Stargate?!
More use of the M:R/Out Of Control visuals! (it'd be cooler if they expanded M:R with the cop visuals)
HOOPS!!!
More midtour setlist changes (like from 05-08, I loved the variety from that era)

It Began In Afrika, Come With Us, and TPPR are the 3 (feasible) live songs I want to see most.

The Chems seem comfortable with being closers at festivals. I do not blame them as they have been going for 20+ years. Along with that, the "prestige" of closing a festival must be quite attractive for them.

Excited to see what Tom, Ed, Adam and the crew come out with for the 2016 shows

I'm always massively impressed with the song re-edits and transitions through new sets

I'd like Midnight Madness & Burst Generator to be blasted out again with new visuals

Just a new setlist with a different structure to what has been for a little while now if not too much to ask. In the earlier concerts especially, (from beginning to come with us tour) I've always loved how with each new concert you never knew what to expect or there were some great unexpected remixes of favourites or songs you wouldn't think you'd hear. Her Jazz intertwined in the setlist somehow would be cool. Some B-sides old or new (they're all great!). A fuller version of 3 little birdies beats mashed with something else even. Some more evolved/different visuals. Above all though, Happy Ed and Tom are back and just doing it again live in whatever way they feel like really.

I would love The return of :

Burst generator
We are the night (and why not the arpeggiator crazy mix with pills son't help you know)
It began in Afrika
Hoops ebw 6 version

I hope longer shows and better transition than 2015. I think it's the "poorest" tour in terms of dynamic. Some nice moments and others less intense in my opinion. The 2007 & 2011 tour were musically really nice with nice medley, nice melodies.

I wouldn't mind if they stopped playing swoon, do it again, and block rocking beats for a while.

Would be cool to hear reflexion, radiate, let us build a city.

My wishes:

Hey Boy Hey Girl no longer the intro - bring it in later!
HOOPS
Under Neon Lights
Something different with Swoon... I really have no idea what, but played differently somehow.
Breaking up Swoon/Star Guitar could be welcome.
In a similar way, OOC/Setting Sun is getting tired. Would love to hear a different take on that.
Wide Open could be devastating, and we know they've toyed with playing it.
Reflexion in the main setlist - not just played only once or twice in encores at CONCERTS I DON'T KNOW ARE HAPPENING NEAR ME - *cough*. Sorry.
S2A + Snow is very welcome to stay part of the main set.
I don't think I'd miss Saturate actually. And a setlist without Believe would be interesting to approach.
Keep Go, and I guess Do It Again, because it's not taking up much real estate in the setlist, and the transition is nice.
EML's probably going to stay, but I wouldn't mind seeing it go.
Block Rockin Beats no longer the final song. Move it back near the start, maybe even as intro!

also

I'll See You There played at least three times.

and as usual

Throw in some deeper digs once or twice for the nerds!

I'm really looking forward to seeing a bunch of new this year - not necessarily new songs or dropping mainstays, but hearing songs done in ways we haven't heard before. No Swoon/SG, no drum outro to Saturate, no OOC/Setting Sun, no HBHG as intro, no BRB as outro, etc.

Quite frankly, The Chemical Brothers have too many hits to cram in to keep playing these 1.5hr shows!

Assuming they are still on the 1.5 hour set time, I don't expect much to change at all. If they do put in something new, or change something up, I think Sunshine Underground will be cut.

Also, could Swoon work as an opener? Not that I have any problem with Hey Boy Hey Girl as an opener, but I know some people would like to see Swoon removed from the setlist. I'm fairly certain it's a permanent staple.

I was thinking this same thing! Both songs are used about the same way live - drop the massive intro synth in, go into a long and rousing intro, and finally set into the satisfying groove.

Title: Re: 2016 tour expectations and predictions
Post by: Bosco on May 01, 2016, 04:51
my break down using the set list from festival 2015 tour, excluding Snow/Surface to Air and TPPR.

Hey Boy Hey Girl = not leaving set list, favorited by too many, and very identifiable song for casual fans. Could be moved, but I think its a solid opener.

EML Ritual = newer song, specially crafted visual, probably staying until a new album.

Do It Again/ Get Yourself High = see Hey Boy Hey Girl. Although, I could see Do It Again reduced even more to just a vocal loop, like Get Yourself High.

GO = will never leave setlist. Unless, it's in rotation with Galvanize in the future. But will totally be heard on the 2016 tour.

Swoon = I feel like there is a personal attachment to this song for Tom or Ed. Like I mentioned before I'm fairly certain this is a permanent staple in the setlist.

Star Guitar = See Hey Boy Hey Girl. I do wish they would move this song towards the end of the setlist. My favorite song ever, but I would be ok if the put it on rotation with other tracks from Come With Us.

Sometimes I Feel So Deserted = see EML Ritual. My impression when this was played live that the crowd kinda felt detached, but that could be my feelings for the song speaking. Probably sticking around though.

Chemical Beats/ Acid Children = Chemical Beats is a Classic. Should never leave out of principle. Acid Children will show its face every now and then, but I think there is better material in their library to give more play to.

Setting Sun/Out of Control/ It Doesn't Matter = Setting Sun Should never leave set list, but could be put on rotation for new material. Out of Control will always be present, in some form. It Doesn't Matter in any form is always welcomed. Seriously, all three tracks are probably the back bone of the set right here.

Saturate = Crowd's favorite visuals. Ed's Ladder Song. I think it should stay, but might be a need for a change. If replaced, should be with something from 'We Are The Night'.

Elektrobank = Outrageous new visual, find it hard to be removed so quickly. I hope this track will always be represented in future setlists, in whatever fashion they choose.

I'll See You There = Another awesome visual, and great track, but tough one on causal fans. Staying for now, but almost certain after this tour it will be removed. Get your fix now, probably wont be around again.

Believe = Classic Visual, and a beast in a live setting, but in the same vein as Saturate. Absolutely blew my mind (and my ears) in 2007 tour. Could be put on rotation.

Sunshine Underground = Hardcore fan favorite. Will be on rotation. Elusive like TPPR, but not as rare.

Escape Velocity/ Golden Path = Awesome track, awesome visuals. TOO LONG!!! I do think it has potential as an opener, but not identifiable enough for casual fans. Sticking around for now, but a change in structure, or rotated as the set's ELT (Epic Long Track) between TPPR and Sunshine Underground could be done for the future. As for Golden Path, the vocal has no permanent fixture here. I thought it was pretty great as a stand alone track in 07.

Don't Think/Under The Influence/ The Test = not going anywhere for the immediate future, robot production cost a pretty penny to scrap it already.

Galvanize/Music: Response = Galvanize will never leave set list. And I think this combo with Music: Response is just fine.

Block Rockin' Beats = Old Grandpa Beats ain't going nowhere. Might not close, but you'll hear it for sure.

New visuals could be for songs that are in the current setlist but have no visuals. But yeah I'm pretty sure they will change a few things. I would be disapointed if they don't

Although, Tom did mention to us in Chicago that there is an alternate version of Radiate. I don't know how serious he was about that...

Tour expectations:
1) They come to my town or anywhere near me
2) I'll be able to attend a (single) show this year

Tour predictions:
1) Won't happen
2) Unlikely to happen

No, seriously, I hope they'll be doing some nice - and most importantly - unexpectated changes and song choices! That's what a chems' show has always been about for me. You never know what they would do with a track, what twists they'd employ to spice up their sets, even from show to show.
How cool would it be if they would play uncommon songs or use elements from those ones to break away from the usual suspects. I still have fond memories of 2005. It was a time when they used to be more active here on the forum. After lots of people had asked for Morning Lemon to be played live they eventually gave it a shot! Man, I couldn't believe it, it was such an awesome present!
They've got such a vast library of great songs that were either never played or dropped after some rare air plays which deserve to be peformed live (again).
For instance:
- Galaxy Bounce (what a funky, energetic track)
- Denmark (would fit in a the housier section of their sets)
- Get Up On It
- In Dust We Trust
- Diamond Sky
- Base 6
- Got Glint
- My Elastic Eye (for god's sake, this is a fucking huge track! bring it back!)
- Come Inside (always liked the horn drama that's going on there)
- Burst Generator
- Midgnight Conversation/ Das Spiegel
- Pills and WATN transition needs a serious comeback!
- No Need/ Clip Kiss
- Africa!!!
- Don't Think!
- Dissolve

And first and foremost: THE TEST! Reworked: a little longer with a longer build-up to its synth madness of its 2002 interpretation (meaning coming in a little later). CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? AM I COMIN' THROUGH? AM I COMIN' THROUGH?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Axd-5lPcWkw

Goosebumps guaranteed!

I would love to hear their newly crafted Escape/Golden Path mashup in its entirety again as it is simply pure gold! Snow Surface goes without saying, it needs to stay for as long as OOC did. That intro is priceless and an instant classic. I also worship their live performance of Go amd its unreal outro!
A thing I'd like to see changed is Out of Control getting dropped since I'm really tired of it. I like the song but it's been around for ages and could make room for other less common songs.

And last but not very very least: SILVER DRIZZLE!!!! It's such a layered track, filled with euphoria and energy. It would perfectly fit into any chems' set, especially as an encore. It's a pure journey through chem-space.

Show/Surface to Air should never leave the set. That's a thing of sheer beauty. Would like to hear We are the night again.

Isn't a solo gig a 2hr show and a festival gig 1,5hrs? So That's good news for the Gelsenkirchen gig

I guess that it'll be a 1.5h show plus a 30min encore (which will probably have 15 min of the Reel  ;D)

And I'm also in for a new intro... HBHG is alright, but it doesn't really that much of an "intro vibe" to me... Bring back Come with us or C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L please!

Just on DJ sets - i wonder why tho! It would make an amazing Live track, very well suited for visuals as well...

EDIT: Just got a promotional mail from SW4 (man i'm not even going there, but they still spam me for signing up for tickets weeks ago ;D) - it says:

To make this monumental date even more special, the greatest electronic duo to ever walk the planet will be bringing a BRAND NEW live show to South West Four. Boasting mind-bending 3D visuals and jaw-dropping lighting and laser configurations [...]

'Brand new' sounds promising! I'm unsure what exactly they mean by '3D visuals' tho - i guess they're just refering the the CGI's themself? Or are the Brothers pulling a Kraftwerk type 3D show now?  :))

An interesting interview with Tom, giving hints at what is to expect in the new show.

Quote

So what can Chemical Brothers fans expect on the duo's long-awaited return to the city? Tom promises some new visual ideas and some musical works-in-progress - he describes it as "an evolution" - and as their fans will already know, the duo are absolutely not too proud to play the classics.

So, that could mean new material, but the "evolution" part make me think it could be different versions of existing tracks... Radiate techno remix anyone ?
And as we suspected, new visuals !

Quote

"I like it as a moment," says Rowlands. "People will do a track and put, you know, '2016 drums' on it or something. But for me, I want Block Rockin' Beats to sound somehow connected to Block Rockin' Beats. Part of what it is is how it sounds - it isn't like a classic song where you can play it on a banjo and it will still sound amazing. Block Rockin' Beats would not sound amazing on a banjo."

But I WANT to hear a banjo version of Block Rockin Beats :(

Man, the "an evolution" quote is so vague. If keeping to the subject of the paragraph, does that mean more "classics" will be fused together? A la Out of Control/ Setting Sun/ It Doesn't Matter, or even the robot sequence with Dont Think/Under The Influence/The Test  (essentially, more medleys)?

Honestly, what i think about this "evolution". It's the same setlist with 2 or 3 new segues, 2 replaced tracks, new visuals for 2 or 3 tracks, maybe some new fills and extra supa dope beats, you know. And of course BRB at the end and only one encore for a whole tour.

Musical works-in-progress guys. To me that says songs we haven't heard yet.

And we might be hearing stuff from BITE that hasn't been played out, from the 'we're still working through Born in the Echoes' comment. The latest tour was so rigid and classics heavy due to the lack of Ed on tour, with him involved and some experience playing the obvious BITE songs under the belt, I think and hope we're in for some unique moments.

He must have heard you:   Ed Interview (http://thethinair.net/2016/05/big-beats-and-broad-strokes-an-interview-with-the-chemical-brothers-ed-simons/)

That interview has Hey Boy Hey Girl embedded not twice, but three times in the article...
It's also terribly edited. It's really not that difficult to proof read things. Weird.

Could also mean stuff from Trespass against us ?

forgot about that. Sept is the movie release date, but any sneak peeks of the material on this leg of the tour would benefit.

I expect at least for this tour..

2 new tracks
2 new visuals

Regarding new material/live expectations from the interview:

"but there's a couple of things left over from those sessions. A couple of good tracks that we're working up to play when we DJ next but maybe we'll leave them out as they get closer to being finished. There's nothing in particular coming out this year, as far as I know... but you never know. It's May, the year is early."

whether they'll finish those 'leftover' tracks to perform live or not who knows.

^This film popped up on my Netflix yesterday, thanks for reminding me to watch it.

Speaking of reminders, this track (which I thought might be Here Come The drums) still hasn't been released:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3WLZ9SUlbY

Maybe it'll pop up in live shows?

and don't forget Pumisher's Erection Song: https://youtu.be/lI_FMB-K4Gk?t=218

I still think it's a Chemical edit of something, not an original though.

Erection Song is probably an edit. Like how they put a ton of sounds into their Shadowbreaker edit. But the-song-that-might-be-here-come-the-drums sounds like it's straight out of the Come With Us recording sessions, it's great.

90% sure it's a Come With Us track. They first mentioned it in a 2002ish interview about tracks they left off Come With Us. Where'd you hear they were working on it back then?

Better footage of Here Might Be The Drums (mixed with Freak of the Week):

Unpopular opinion perhaps but I don't think the (maybe) HCTD track is worthy of an album or single release. Sounds like a B-side or bonus track to me. Just call me ChemReact2.

That's a clearer version of Erection Song than I've heard on other clips. So it starts with "gonna need your soul" (or something?) and then "123456789 oh oh oh". That right? If so I'm leaning towards WN's interpretation. Sounds like a big sample of something-or-other that's been Chemicalised. I think I like this one (reminds me a little of Freeland's We Want Your Soul, vocally & lyrically) . Maybe you Philidelphia people should've asked Tom what the "counting" track is. Or did you? Maybe it should have been in the Ask Tom thread?

Nah, I was so overwhelmed by what was happening I forgot all my good questions.

I also agree about the status of Here Might Be The Drums... it sounds like a CWU b-side. Like The Duke or Drizzle like Pumisher pointed out.

Not 100% with this, but i think it was back in an interview around Surrender where they've somehow came across about how long they usualy work on a track (don't remember what the exact answer to this question was) and they where answering and then mention "and then there is a track called Here Comes The Drums on which we are working on for years now but haven't released it yet because if you have a track with this name it has to have the most intense drums in it - but we haven't"

The whole thing reminds a bit of Silver Drizzle too. And I would also locate this in the CWU era, it's got this slightly more dance feel going on that was so striking about CWU.

HCTD sounds awfully like an edit as well, to me. Granted it's clearly not of anything we recognise. But those guitars are too big of a sample to be a fully fledged original I think.

Definitely does sound CWU-ey though.

Another Chicago story. Tom wasn't aware that we identified that section with Problem/Question - we told him it's easily the biggest blue ball moment of the show for all the forum members because we all think Problem/Question is about to drop then and it never does. He thought that was funny.
