Title: Live 2021/2022 expectations
Post by: hstn on Jul 01, 2021, 00:35
I've been feeling rather sentimental for the excitement and speculation that came from the 2018 gigs so I figure with a now presumably clean slate it'd be fun to start that up!

My take:

TDTYF is an absolute given live of course, where it should end up in the setlist though is the question.

I feel moments like Hoops/DYOH and some of the newer visuals (especially later 2019) are a sign of especially major changes to come as well, in terms of visual/audience interaction, crazier imagery, and probably new interpretations of old work. With the unintentional gap from the No Geography tour and a looming 10th LP there could be some notable shakeups too

However with the pandemic there could be some scaling back, I theorized with a friend that Saturate could get scaled down or cut entirely due to the use of contact (the giant balloons). Would that leave for more light based work instead?

I leave the discussion to y'all now!

(P.S. give us The Universe Sent Me live please)

I hope for some live premieres, as well as the Live version of "The Darkness..."
But I dunno, where it could be placed in the set, maybe on the spot of the Gravity Drops right after the Star Guitar/Temptation?

The "I'll be lovin you" sample and that buildup would be as heavy for the audience, as the GTKO! with some nice visuals starting from the complete darkness, slowly showing the pictures of rising sun, the blooming flowers, the buttefly coming out of the cocon, or something in the style of the actual music video, with Dancing people, or... AND LISTEN TO THIS:
THEY'LL USE THEIR FAVS OF OUR FILTER VIDEOS TO DO THE ONE BIG LIVE COLLAGE FROM IT!

And oh god, go back to the Free Yourself transition into MAH, and put the Chemical Beats after it, not in the middle, as it feels out of place being placed between FY and MAH

They should play it right after No Geography. BPMs are almost a match, plus gives off some great energy before the first break of the show. The crowd will be buzzing till T and E get back on the stage.

Rehashing stuff I've already have complained about, but hoping (not expecting) that Star Guitar is saved from the Temptation vocal intro that they used over the past few tours. I love both songs, but the green eyes/blue eyes/grey eyes modulated bit doesn't sound good, and a bit too on the nose for my liking.

The Temptation instrumental to Star Guitar segue from way back, now that's a gem!

i love the 2002 temptation / star guitar. but i mean, i think the non-modulated temptation vocal samples are lovely

I hoped for this too that's primarily why I made the thread!!! Also Setting Sun returning would be very interesting.

In regards to teasers:
Spoiler
On Ed's story Escape Velocity can be heard in it's usual spot after the fag break with the No Geography acapella, I think the song is now retired. It SEEMS though Saturate is still in but that's only going by the lighting images they've posted.

I saw that too! The only thing I could think of is that maybe TDTYF will be taking over its slot.

Spoiler
if that's the case, I'm gonna be a little gutted that NG is replaced

Setlist FM (https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-chemical-brothers/2021/henham-park-southwold-england-2b8fc072.html)

Certainly some movement in the order of the tracks.

No cool segue between

And starting the gig with yesterday's track 1 is a surprise, I think.

I found clips that show the Do It Again portion, and it's just with the regular blue visuals from 2015 but a VERY interesting mix, looks like they revamped the Dissolve ones for the rest though? They also tacked on the Bango interlude to DYOH in another set of clips (all from an IG story tho)

I'm happy Go is not track 1 anymore. It builds up nicely, but once the beats kick in, it kinda deflates. Just not a good opener. Unless they really amp it up and give it some more oomph.

Shame EML Ritual is cut. I would cut Saturate and replace it with something else. Cut Temptation/Star Guitar.

They are NEVER going to cut Star Guitar (they could cut the Temptation bit at some point though, considering it's not actually a Chems track).
As for Saturate, it seems that the paint splashes have become an almost iconic image that represents live Chems shows, with the added bonus of the balloon/ball things. So I wouldn't hold my breath on that one being cut any time soon, either.

I know time is an issue with trying to cramp in as many hits in the setlist, but that Chemical Beats > GO > MAH sequence sounds really cluttered with too many big sounds and is way too fast.

Probably need to hear a cleaner version but not feeling the OoC>DoItAgain transition. It's ok, but feel like there is so many superior iterations of OoC mixes, that this comes out so meh. Honestly don't understand the continued effort to shoehorn 'Do It Again' into the set anymore. It was a mild hit and had its run. Let it go.

I would assume majority of a live gig's audience are people seeing them for the first time.
When I saw Saturate live in 2008, I didn't know beforehand about the visuals and it blew my mind.
It is ridiculously well thought and fits the track almost perfectly.
The ball splashing synced with the whooping bass - it just hits you in the face. Amazing.
They're proud of it and I also love it every time I see it.

To be fair, there isn't a whole lot videos at all. Got me thinking either the crowd was significantly reduced, or perhaps people attending brought a new attitude of enjoying "being in the moment" rather than capturing it for social media.

What a long, belated path to get to the fun later part of the tour when things get all mixed around. I like the OOC has that highly resonated version of the synth hook being played again like the '99/'00 tour. Adding the DIA lyrics is interesting, and them putting it with Setting Sun years ago too proves how pliable the drum/bass line is.🔊

THIS!

As much as I enjoy and trust with the tinkering of the setlist after all these years, this was totally cramped! Not giving 'Go' room to breath after CB felt so rushed.

If Go is gonna be played, let's give it some space at least.

Worst case scenario...the live show is gonna be one big huge megamix with every track ( with the main drop) lasting about 2 minutes transitioning into another one.

Surprised by the lack of videos honestly, was front and centre between the stage and sound tower maybe about 20 rows back. Hardly anyone was filming that far forward and the crowd was very energetic. Was my first time seeing them but also at the djs after speaking to people, only one person had seen them before and that was at Glasto 2019. Mostly young people I was speaking to. The service at Latitude was awful so that probably explains the lack of videos to some extent. I have a short one of the Darkness that you Fear but its pretty dreadful, the show for it was great though. Easily the best live show i've ever seen (Hot Chip the night before were fantastic too mind you!)

The weird intro and the yellow lights made me think it was something else.

As promised (quality is awful, i hardly recorded anything this is off my friend i went with)

There was also another new track I think but honestly my recollection of it is terrible. It wasn't on for particularly long it may have potentially been something transition (definitely wasn't chemical brothers though and it wasn't temptation or any of the regular extras)

it aint THAT bad ;D. Visuals give me Swoon vibes though I dunno if it's actually transitioning into the song.

Haha yeah I definitely got the Swoon vibes as well, main visuals were mostly something similar to the Northern Lights i'd say, there was nothing particularly groundbreaking going on for it

Would be interesting to know what has fully changed, but not sure if I'm a fan of the ones they've done based on footage in here/on instagram.
Disagree with folk that think Go wasn't a good opener, personally HBHG is too big an opener, and the lasers and green felt very 'classic' and appropriate, so going to miss that aspect.

Do we think these changes are 'testing' of the waters kind of changes considering it's only 3 (possibly) shows in 2021?

I dont think so. Considering there are some gigs that have been postponed to 2022, maybe the setlist will change a bit, until a new album/single drops.

also i absolutely love the new OOC/DIA mashup, wish I could hear more of it

It's also worth mentioning according to that Midimatt screenshot they had this setlist planned in some capacity since 2020.

No clue about whether or not TDTYF was a part of those plans but I'm sure the postponings and delays probably contributed to a rather unorthodox setlist for the time being. Even if a majority was planned from the start, the 2020 gigs were supposed to continue the No Geography tour anyway rather than become it's own beast.

Though even for 2018 there were some parts of the show where transitions have changed from gig to gig (specifically Surface to Air) so I guess it's just...all up to what they do, I for one love the new unpredictability of the sets, sometimes it feels too chaotic but it's a welcome change nonetheless.

(I'm still singing the funk electric via those clips of OOC/DIA btw)

Well, I think, that they never played Do it Again with funk electric sample live...z always the stripped down version with title sample.

Appreciate you taking the time to post some proof.

Sounds like some interesting melodic structure in the background, or is that a build for a segue?

Honestly feel like this (TDTYF) IS the song to replace Star Guitar as the midway song before restart. In my opinion, Star Guitar should simply finish the set preceded by Hey Boy Hey Girl . Hype them up and send them home all lovey-dovey.

If there is an encore, TPPR is perfect fit. Or, which I've mentioned before, go to a rotating encore finale of either TPPR, Sunshine Underground, and Escape Velocity.

Also, you guys discussing the Tomorrow Never Knows - Junior Parker intro got me thinking. It's a glorious tradition no doubt, but what about giving some of their own legacy some run?

'Where do I start, where do I begin' anyone? An edited down 'The State We're In' would even work.

Haha, no problem. It went down pretty well I would say, honestly i would say 90% of the crowd knew HBHG and nothing else, which was a shame as a few people were leaving near the start after they opened with it so they didn't get to experience chems.

Just wondering as well, people were discussing above about Star Guitar never leaving the setlist (i can very much support it staying), but was just wondering the reason why. Is it anything in particular like they specifically love it or just because its a fairly big song?

As the track on the set? I absolutelly love the "Where do I begin", but Tommorow Never Knows intro is something that's kinda untouchable to chems, but tbh?
I'd like to hear their own cover of it

They replaced it with "No Path To Follow" for a brief time, which was not the best idea imo, but yeah, another track might work better !

Literally the "Tommorow Never Knows", their intro
Here's the "og" version, it's the cover of the Beatles' song

Don't forget about the studio version of the intro =>

In at least 1997 they also used Willie Hutch's Brothers Gonna Work It Out.

Jeez, look at all my goosbumps!!! This sounds so damn cool and potentially epic. I've always admired their ability to tweak their songs for their live performances making them even more interesting than they already are and many times giving them new nuances and aspects that way.
