Title: Now Gaming
Post by: Nekcore on Jul 21, 2015, 22:25
Well, like sandelic requested and myself who likes this type of entertainment, I'm gonna start this fun topic.

Recently I've been hooked with Homeworld Remastered, an excellent classic sci fi strategy game. I Remember, that my brother bought Homeworld 2 on Christmas of 2003, and it was fucking mindblowing the first second of starting the game, that day we didn't get to sleep at all, staring at the screen without moving just to think our next move and start a beautiful intergalactic war, fun days indeed.

Now let's move on to the witcher 3, sandelic, let's discuss one of my favorite franchise of all time (even the books  ;D)

Homeworld was fun game indeed, I didn't know they remastered it! Got to take a look at it, one of these days

Haha, now I don't know how to start my promised rave about Witcher and how great it is, if you like this kind of entertainment.
I've been playing it for almost two months now, and every second of the way it was a great journey, sprinkled with romance, monsters, hunts, epic battles and humorous situations. It is a nice way to end this trilogy, and hopeful beginning of another story, placed in Witcher universe.
It bears to say that Wither is originally conceived by  polish sci fi author  Andrzej Sapkowski, back in 1986, and now it's been massively popularized by  The Witcher games, made by polish game developer CD Project RED (trivia:  Witcher games where Poland no.1 export product, one that polish president even gave Obama during his visit).
It's also worth mentioning that CD Project RED is owner of GOG.com and they are first to sell game exclusively without DRM protection, something every gamer can appreciate.
Now, what to say about game that treats it's side quests like a main one? That is ridiculous at times with it's attention to details? It's atmosphere?
For my part, I could sing praises at how well every part of it is executed, from many choices you get throughout the game, AAA voice acting (Charles Dance, among others), movie-like direction and camera, soundtrack that functions really well even outside the universe it was made for, leaning on Slavic heritage (they even took one of the old Croatian folk songs and used it brilliantly!)
Places and visuals of the world really works - houses feel like they been lived in, cities are busy and noisy, nps' comment more on you and things around them then I'm used to, and was often stopped dead in my tracks to hear some comment.
Sound, oh, sound is magnificent - surround feels natural, background noises are nicely done, every nps has it's own voice actor, so people do feel different, as opposed to skyim, where one guy gives voice to several hundred virtual people.
Monster diversity is top-notch, over 50 different enemies, each with it's own routine, tactics, weaknesses and strengths.
Animations are great, scenes are incredible at times... what else to say?
Ah, yes, books are great also. I was aware of them from first Witcher, back in 2007. but decided to read them after Witcher 3, so not to spoil anything.
Mistake. I denied myself more immersive experience of games, especially with things like Last Wish, that provide much more background and life to game characters. I'm at the last book, Lady of the Lake, and am trying to slow down, so not to devour it too fast.
I'll leave you with one of the more beautiful moments in the game, and am interested to hear what you think about it  :)

I've been enjoying the hell out of Batman Arkham Knight lately. Even with the little bugs and lack of optimisation on PC (luckily, I managed to run it really well on my rig), it's the epic conclusion to the Batman Arkham saga that I was hoping for.

I bought the special Batman gunmetal grey PS4 especially for that game. But I haven't started it yet. I know it's going to occupy a good solid week of my time so I'm waiting until I'm back from my holiday.

V excited though.

Journey (the game not the band, haha) is now available on PS4.

If you feel like feeling feelings, I highly recommend setting aside a couple of hours to play from start to finish. It's gorgeous, has a beautiful soundtrack, and the feels, man. The feels.

I actually bought Journey for PS3 few years ago based on your recommendation, Whirly, and I never got around to say thanks  :)
Game is stunningly beautiful, it does bring up combination of feelings, with great visual art and smartly used music, that is simply gorgeous, and it does that without one word being spoken!
I play it from time to time, and I am still enjoying it as the first time, if not more.
Try it, folks, you won't regret it  ;)

Witcher 3 - Wolven storm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcFYm0S-zo0)

First of all. This game is a truly masterpiece, this is interactive art in its perfection. Excellence abounds at every turn: excellent exploration, excellent creature design, excellent combat mechanics (IMO), excellent character progression. It captures the essence of a dark and gritty fantasy landscape surrounded by stellar details. Everything on this game gave me a huge envolving experience, which sucks me into the very world of the The Witcher, feeling that the story wonderfully reveals the consequences of your actions, and  balances the politics and personal conflict with great momentum. Is like reading the book all over again, you know the story is already established but somehow it immerses you and makes you think if the actions of Geralt was truly necessary to carry the consequences of it. There's so much to do.

And man, the graphics are beautiful, the sound desing superb, voice acting top notch. When I played the first witcher, never knew CD Projekt Red will surpass it, even to a cinematic level, Bravo for them.

And about The Wolven Song. That moment gave me goosebumps, great scene, the song is well executed, giving you the sense that you're experiencing a gorgeus moment.

I finally gave in and bought MGS V. Just finished the prologue and... Wow, just wow. It's the single best introduction to a video game I've ever seen. The Fox Engine is doing wonders. It's incredibly beautiful and detailed, so well directed, and already bringing a ton of questions on the scenario. Kojima can put his name as much as he wants in the credits, I don't care if the result is that stunning.

In other news, I also tried the new NVidia "Share" feature (in beta), which is basically another overlay on games which makes capturing and streaming video games much easier with Shadowplay. But the killer feature is that you can share the game with someone... As in, giving the person a link, and with just Google Chrome,  they will see the game in real time, and will be able to take control of the game ! As well as talking with the mic and webcam. I spent an hour with a friend having fun on Team Fortress 2, we could both control the game and it was really fun. I can imagine a lot of applications like showing a game to a friend, but instead of just showing it, he can actually try it, or asking a friend for help on a difficult level, or playing a local multiplayer game with split screen with someone else...

Intel Core i7-5820k @ 3.3Ghz
MSI NVidia GTX 980  4GB
16GB DDR4
SSDs in Raid 0

Shadowplay and all of the linked features will work on cards GTX 6xx and up if I'm not mistaken. Or is it 7xx ? Anyway, all new nVidia cards have it, and I know AMD has an equivalent technology of hardware video encoding for recording and streaming.

Who here is playing the Star Wars BattleFront beta ? (Add me on Origin : benjisbrk)

I quickly tried the game earlier. Only tried the first mode (a kind of king of the hill), which was not the most exciting. For now it's a pretty basic shooter game BUT :
- It's frickin' Star Wars !
- The work they did on textures is incredible. Best looking rocks I've ever seen
- IT'S STAR WARS !

I'm looking forward to try the battle on Hoth, with X-Wing and Tie Fighters

I'm a huge fan of the Silent Hill games, and the PT (playable teaser) for the upcoming, but sadly cancelled, Silent Hills game for the ps4.
That demo scared the shit out of me!!  :o  I just found out that some fans of the PT demo on the ps4 joined together to make  a new game with the survival horror feel of PT. I just backed them on Kickstarter. Can't wait to play this game when it's finished (december 2016).

I am, and man, what a beautiful experience, it nails the Star Wars feels. The visuals, the sound design and the gameplay are awesome. It can be repetitive for some time, but it is fun. The only downside it is that the rebels on walker assault never win a single game, it is frustrating to coordinate all the players to defense to destroy the AT ATs, but hey the people learn at some point, drop zone it is fun too and survival also. I will add you BenJ, perhaps we can get a win for the rebels at least once  ;D.

Today I played a few hours of AC-S and I'm having fun, despite few bugs here and there, but nothing so game-breaking as unity's ridiculous draw call problem.
Also I'm playing Fallout 4 at the moment, although it looks like crap for a AAA title (but to be fair, everything looks like crap after Witcher), game is loaded with things to do, fun side quests,  and building settlements is occupying most of my playtime.

Another funny glitch that I had
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlp_NhTXIiY

Yeah, I'm liking AC Syndicate. It still has many of the problems that every AC has had for a few years now (flawed narration, glitches, etc) but London is magnificent. I still like Paris from AC Unity more but that might only be because I know the real Paris much better. One thing you can't deny is that they always did a great job creating beautiful cities, faithful to the real thing.

I haven't got a chance to play Fallout 4 yet, but it's looking pretty cool! I'm a huge fan of Bethesda's games, but I wasn't really excited for this one cause I didn't like Skyrim that much. But now that the game's out and I've gotten a chance to see it in action I'm a little more hopeful. What does anyone here who's played the game think of it?
Title: Re: Now Gaming
Post by: sandelic on Dec 04, 2015, 13:56
Well, I'm not a huge fan of Fallout 3 or 4, for that matter, I loved first two parts, for their black humor and weird characters, something that's been lost with 3D fallouts
But 4, despite having uninteresting story and not-so-great characters, is fun in other ways, like building settlements for your fraction, exploring is always interesting in post-apocalyptic world, but it's not even close to New Vegas quality (which was done by folks that worked on original fallout). Brotherhood of steel makes a comeback in style, one of the first thing you get is power armor, something you had to bleed for in previous installments. It can be upgraded, modded, together with weapons and other armor.
Map is unusually small and it seems to me that this is the smallest Fallout ever.  Bottom line, I'm still playing it and, despite those 'flaws' I mentioned,  I'm having fun with it.
There is something in traversing wasteland while listening 'In the Hall of Mountain King' on your radio...  :)

Star Wars: Battlefront. What's the verdict?

I see lots and lots of people playing it. But I've also read lots of disappointing reviews of it and I'm trying to decide if it's worth my money and time. There are only 4 maps right? And you're very rarely a hero? And you have to pay for the season pass because they rush released it and it's not really a full game yet?

I have the whole of Arkham Knight to play when I get back to the UK next weekend. So I'm covered for intensely decent gameplay for the holiday period at least.

Rise Of The Tomb Raider and Mortal Kombat X on the Xbox One.

TR is really good, great successor to the last TR. For MKX I'm not really sure if like it or not. I'd loved the 2010 version on the 360, but this here - I don't think it is as good (ok it's better than MK vs DC, but honestly that is not a task).

After finishing Tomb Raider i think I might try Ori And The Blind Forest, what I've seen so far really impresses me and looks gorgeous.

I myself was never fan of old TB, it was pretty boring to me, but I can understand where they come from, I feel pretty much same about Fallout, for example

Wow, 4000 hours, you do play it a lot ^^. I just have a mere 850 hours or so. I am not playing as much as I used to, but I'm too am pretty good at everything except Spy/Scout/Sniper. Especially Spy. I always feel like I'm the worst Spy ever whenever I try to play Spy
Title: Re: Now Gaming
Post by: androidgeoff on Jan 15, 2016, 22:37
Biggest things that made me way better at spy:

Never hug a corner. Always be in the middle of a path and treat the game like audiosurf ninja.
Use the revolver more often than you think necessary (i.e. going for a knife kill on an unaware, but moving sniper who is at 50 hp. just shoot him and cloak -> redisguise -> go again).
Wait for 2 more people to pass after you see a target.
Every time you disguise, use a different class.
Sapping and shooting the sentry is really effective and unexpected. Generally, one dies during/after choosing to do this, but the trade of resources is very much in your favor.

The crazy thing is the gun mettle update made spy way easier for people who play him like I do. I always like using characters in a versatile, utilitarian way. With the resistance changes, to the speed boost options, the spy traded the old dead ringer and gained a new, universal cloaking mechanic. Even so, the dead ringer is still rather legitimate as a watch. One just needs to adapt.

Basically, as cloak is such an important aspect of the Spy, it really benefited from the Gun mettle update.
Title: Re: Now Gaming
Post by: Ben_j on Jan 16, 2016, 07:10
Yeah but they made good spies even more OP with this update :D The friend I play with the most often is an incredibly good spy and I dread him even more now. Although I grew to anticipate his moves and to be extra careful, and I almost always spot him when he's disguised.
And the latest update made the phlog completely OP too... I mean I never heard anyone say "you know which weapon is underpowered and should be buffed ? The Phlog !"
Title: Re: Now Gaming
Post by: androidgeoff on Jan 16, 2016, 21:08
I was fairly surprised by the Phlog changes. I think they either need to take away the Uber or the health regen. The knockback resistance is needed. Too many people would cancel the taunt and allow the Phlog to attack sooner!

After finishing Tomb Raider i think I might try Ori And The Blind Forest, what I've seen so far really impresses me and looks gorgeous.
Now that i finished Ori and the blind forest all i can say is wow. That game was dope. I say it's the best jump&run i've ever played.

General:
It's just the multiplayer  :(  It's fast and stuff, but not the same fun Quake Arena was. But Doom for me is the Singleplayer, so i can't give a final opinion.

Technical:
Runs on both my PC and my XboxOne very smooth. On the Xbone it looks good, but playing it with a Gamepad doesn't make sense for me and is not so much enjoyable. On the PC i think they should work a bit on the graphics. Don't think they are final because it doesn't look like a 2016-Game, more like ID's Rage (2011 or 12). Also both maps you can play in Deathmatch-Mode aren't so much fun, they're too much crooked and complex.

Anybody into the requirements for Doom ?

Minimum
•Intel Core i5-2400/AMD FX-8320
•Nvidia GTX 670 or AMD Radeon HD 7870 (both with 2 GByte VRAM)
•8 GByte RAM

Recommended
•Intel Core i7-3770/AMD FX-8350
•Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 (both with 4 GByte VRAM)
•8 GByte RAM

Now the question: As CPU i have an older Intel core 2 quad q9450 - how does he compete to the ones from minimum requirements? The multiplayer beta runs well, but how about the single player?

CPU will rarely be the bottleneck on recent games. I mean if you have a fast one, even if it's a few years old, it will be fine as long as you have a fine GPU

I could finally try the Forza 6 Apex "beta" on my PC.

- Dynamic video settings (adapting in real time to the performance of your computer), good !
- Horrible optimization (the game runs at 30fps and looks significantly uglier than on Xbox One. And I have a GTX 980) : not good :(
- Releasing a free to play version AND a "beta" of the free to play version because they're probably aware of that awful optimization: ... smart ?

Anyways, I'm happy to finally see a Forza game on PC, and I'm pretty sure they'll figure out how to get it running like a charm eventually (and I'll probably have a GTX 1080 by then anyway)

I've had it for a year so it's ok :D I'll get a 1080 in a few months.

Back on Forza 6, Microsoft pushed a big update that increases the performance for Windows Store games, and it does indeed ! The game now runs wonderfully at 60fps with all parameters in ultra except for MSAA (4x instead of 6x)

Ok, now that i've got Doom i have to say that it is really really good. Doom3 had a much darker atmosphere which i liked a bit more, but it's fun to play. Also, had graphics on ultra (except shadows, this i can only set up to high because it says i don't have enough gpu-memory (have 2gb, needs 5gb)) and it runs smooth in 1920x1200 (v-sync on).
But now i'll have to leave an watch football (last bundeliga-day today, except for relegation) - COME ON FC (köln)

Who did I have there? a rookie and a semi-pro? :)
Playing solo against a party is always harder as they know how to rotate. I wish Solo Standard had more in playlist.
I'm just a Prospect II but this is really an ELO HELL. How many times do I see even a PRO leave the goal at kickoff. How can you do that?

Also I'm playing keyboard and mouse :) :) :) No worries I'll get you next time
Btw your Party is making the mistake of going 2 for the ball at kickoff. You should not do that.

I also tested more recent games, they mostly all run at full settings in 1080p at 70 - 80 fps. Some run in 4k at 60fps, and it's really nice.

Definitely worth it. It's playable with the pad on PC but it's probably one of the only games that has almost no performance benefit from being on PC so it's up to you.

To tell the truth I even witnessed some problems when playing it on an Intel Iris 520. Missing shadows (which is kinda lame when you have to hide on that shadow), or lights visible when they shouldnt. No problem on Nvidia however. It was bee-yoo-tee-ful

F1 2016 is really good. The best F1 game from Codemasters in years. Really entertaining career mode, and they finaly found a good way to make practice sessions interesting.  The only low points are for the AI, that feels way too easy in Expert mode, and way too hard in Legend mode, and there's nothing in between...

I'm playing UT from the first release in 99 and big fan of this series of their multiplayer shooter.

I can't wait for Forza Horizon 3. I might even take the 100€ edition just to be able to play it 4 days before release (and get some cool bonus cars). Although I liked the demo on Xbox One, I think it's starting to show the limits of the console (shadows popping, aliasing, trees popping...) but I'm sure the PC version will be amazing on that level !

The Nintendo Switch January event is on Friday (Thursday evening in the States) and I for one am very excited to see some more footage of the console and more importantly, the new Zelda.

Leaked / rumoured info on the price is pretty tantalising too. I've been basing the success of my current graphic design projects on whether they'll afford me a Nintendo switch... and a lot of them will  8)

This is the first time I've been really excited about a console since the Gamecube was announced. And I'm hoping it'll get me back into the world of gaming, which I've sorely missed since my N64 days. I'd like to finally be part of an online community too, and play games with people I know around the world.

Yeah Apollo 11 is nice. I brought my Vive to my parents a few weeks ago, and had my family try it. My father tried Apollo 11 and the other ones tried theBlu (http://store.steampowered.com/app/451520). Eveyone loved it !
As for other cool stuff I've tried, Budget Cuts is really awesome, it gives you a glimpse of what VR and room scale can bring to a game.
Racing games (Project Cars, Asetto Corsa, Dirt Rally) are immersive but usually very aliased or a bit ugly. Hopefully I'll get a GTX 1080 Ti soon :D

I've spent the evening getting acquainted with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (it's pretty different to Double Dash isn't it guys!?) but I am honestly having a wonderful time with it.

I'm off on a work thing next week and will be staying in a hotel. The thought of being able to bring along Mario Kart with me and play all evening is pretty exciting...

So...

I started playing League of Legends. My wife was really into it at college and picked it up again recently during her off-time before the wedding. After moving to Portland and while waiting for my green-card, I decided to give it a go. I have to say, it is a lot of fun and requires a decent amount of investment to learn how the game works, which I appreciate. I've also taken to watching people stream it on Twitch (I used to exclusively watch OOT and Majora's Mask streams). It's like being a football fan and being able to watch a game every 45 minutes, non-stop, everyday.

Anywho. I'm really enjoying it. I'm about to hit level 20 and can feel myself understanding the game more and more each day.
If you play, and want to join me for a game of Norms (I don't have ANYWHERE near the amount of Champions needed for ranked, even when I do get to level 30) then hit me up.

My Summoner name is 'pearlsgirl' - because I'm a fantastic human being.

Help needed for Arkham Knight

I recently started playing Arkham Knight again, but got stuck.
I'm at ACE Chemicals, fought the Helicopter and took the hostage outside to Gordon. Now i'd jump back to ACE - and nothing happens. I can run around and drive around but the story doesn't do anything. I've watched and read some walkthroughs and they all say that right after you jump back to ACE Oracle pops up on the screen telling me to blow up the wall with the logo. Thing is that she doesn't appear so i'm stuck right now. Any chances of forcing her to pop up? Playing it on an Xbox One if this is helpfull. I also don't have any savegames from before to just try it again and i don't want to start from scratch with a complete new game.

Here's the part from 00:20 to 00:45

In other gaming news, I've started playing WoW - again! - after 5 years. It's amazing how easy it is to be drown into this hot mess that is MMORPG.

I've also finished South Park - Fractured But Whole (get it?) and World of Final Fantasy, both are really fun and one of them is really funny :D

OK, quick question.

Is Mario Odyssey a 'Sandbox' game? And if so. How is Breath of the Wild not?

Follow up. Why do people like Mario Odyssey so much?
I'm finding it really difficult to understand all the talk about how it's a better game than BOTW. People can enjoy it more, sure. Maybe they're not Zelda fans. And the jumping mechanism is great. But the criticisms levelled at Zelda, when comparing, are beyond hypocritical when they're talking about a game that has you chasing a rabbit <20 times, collecting the same seeds to put into the same pots, finding Captain Toad hidden in every level... I just... I feel like I'm missing something major, or there's some elaborate joke going on designed to make me question my sanity. I'm 150 hours into Zelda and still psyched to pick up the controller and continue exploring. And it still feels like magic every time I discover a new place or hear the "there's a dragon above you" music.
Eugh.
I just love it.

Sea battling is incredibly rewarding, and who doesn't like a treasure hunt?

When you wait for over a decade for a game to drop, you cannot help but be slightly hyped for it.
But thankfully, our Square friends managed to piss on some of those expectations for XV, then called Final Fantasy Versus XIII, by releasing awful FFXIII and XIII-2, so I was not expecting very much.
Only hoping for it to be 'not completely crap'. Story would have been connected to FFXIII universe then called Fabula Nova Crystaliis, encompassing FFXIII and all sequels from that universe.

We got none of that. After poor reception of FFXIII and later XIII-2 together with Lighting returns, Square obviously decided to move FFXV as far as it's possible from bad reputation FFXIII got.

What we actually got was somewhat brave and different. Game puts you in medias res without explaining anything at all about characters or world you're in. They actually expected you to watch Brotherhood anime that deals with 4 friends you are navigating through this world and their background and they expected you to watch Kingsglaive movie, that explains what happened just before the game starts.

That is asking a lot from anyone, even FF fans. That's the brave part. Maybe also quite a stupid part. It was a gamble, that I'm not sure was necessary or that it payed off. Having watched all of the above, I was quite familiar with world and characters, but I don't know how I would react if I didn't.
I suspect it would all be a hot mess.

Story is rather typical of JRPG - Noctis, prince of Lucis and his three friends, Ignis, Gladio and Prompto are send by Noctis' father away to the Altissia, where he is to be reunited with his childhood heartthrob Lunafreya (anyone noticed this flood of Latin (and Norse) names and their meanings?) and future wife, on the day his father is set to sign a peace treaty with kingdom of Niflheim, that Lucis is at war with. Things don't go as planned and soon Noctis and his friends find out that treaty was just a deception for Niflheim to capture Crystal that is protecting Lucis and kill the king.
Now Noctis has to fight to reclaim his kingdom.
Story takes quite a dark turn right in the middle of the game and for my money, this is the most depressing story told in FF  :'(

Battle, something that FF heavily relies on, is real-time and fast, and extremely easy. Foolishly I decided to play on easy thinking how it will do until I learn how to properly play. Unnecessary. Game is too easy even on normal setting and there is no hard mode. Only a few bosses present any kind of challenge. So replay value of this game is minimal. But visually great.

Speaking of visuals, this has to be most beautiful FF ever. Anything, from models of characters to countryside is done really good. Summons, that we used to call GF or Espers or Eidons, are now Gods and, by gods, they are impressive! If anything, this FF managed to capture pure awesomeness of epic monsters and moments that you will not forget anytime soon. It is what FF always wanted to be.

But game is not without its flaws. As I said, battle is not challenging enough for FF universe. Main story is really, really short. Side quests are few and not interesting. Hunts for monsters are somewhat better, with more variety than I expected. Night and day cycle are unnecessary and more then once I felt like it was a concept not really developed right. Not to mention that this is still NOT a open game world. It tricks you into thinking it is because first map is pretty big. But that is all there is to it. All else (from chapter V to final chapter XV) is one big hallway simulator.
I will not go to abandoned concepts and early E3 gameplays of game, then called FF versus XIII. Nothing we were presented at first survived to final product. After decade of developing, that's not really shocking and I was prepared for that. But game feels unfinished in more places than one.
And that is hilarious. Working so long on game and still manage to release unfinished game is achievement unto itself. I am aware of developing problems and in-house problems at Square, but still!
I could have waited for a little bit longer if they could finished it as they should.
It's painfully obvious at later chapters, when game goes full hallway simulator.

All in all, I had fun for most part of the game. Little things they put in for us older players are nice touch and are much appreciated. I rode Regalia listening to Liberi Fatali from FFVIII and it's a experience that is not easily outmatched. I viewed vistas listening to Roses of May (or Loss of me, or Beatrix theme) from FFIX and it's sublime. And, of course, Yoko Shimomura did a great job all of her own. Worthy successor of Uematsu-san. And that is quite a big praise.

Edit: One more thing, PC version of this game is very, very demanding. You need quite a powerful PC to even run it, let alone in higher resolution and with advanced effects. But it looks gorgeous, and it really is a next gen.

FF XV review
I tried the demo on PC, thinking it might make me want to play the game, but no. I still don't get that game. I'm still repelled by the characters, by how empty and dull the overworld looks, how boring the combat is and add to that the great number of crashes I got during the demo, I think I'm never buying this game...

In other news, Far Cry 5 is finally coming out tomorrow, and I can't wait ! I saved myself from looking at too much stuff, like the beginning of the game, that is said to be great (like all Far Cry games), but all that I've seen has me excited for that game.

So far, it's the best Far Cry I've played. All of the progression in the game is organic, by saving people, exploring the world, finding infos here and there, instead of popping a point on your map. The hud is more minimalistic and doesn't feed you in the mouth all of the things in your surroundings. New abilities are unlocked via points that you acquire by accomplishing some challenges (kill x people with the sniper, free x outposts without triggering the alarm, etc), which is more engaging than just accumulating XP.
Appart from that, the Far Cry DNA and gameplay is still there, and the game looks gorgeous. I'm playing it in ultra, in 4k on my big TV, and most of all in HDR, which makes it look overall incredible.

Given the redneck theme of the game, they didn't do this that much. There are two radios in the game, one playing christian country songs, and the other playing folk rock like Creedance Clearwater Revival

So I'm not much of a gamer that likes to use game chat while gaming, but my hand is kinda forced while playing the addictive multiplayer Co-Op of Sea Of Thieves. Problem is, my generic headset got destroyed by a vacuum cleaner incident. I would like to buy a nice headset that can be used as both gaming headset for Xbox 1 and one that has quality sound for watching movies and listening to music.

Does anybody have any recommendations? Or would it be in my best interest in invest in two separate headphones for each activity?

Good story, interesting world, nice presentation, interesting characters, recommended.

And I would like to retract my previous description of God of War combat system, while it does start repetitive and boring, it does get much, much better in second half of the game, with upgraded skills.
Finished it few days ago, 8/10 only because of the ending, I expected much more than cliffhanger.

Yeah, 4k really makes a difference. For now I have a 1080 that is a wee bit underpowered to have 4k/60fps on all games, but I'm counting on Nvidia's new GPUs to solve that.
HDR also does make some games look gorgeous

D00000d, I got the Xbox One here, too. If you do any online gaming you can mostly find me playing 'Sea of Thieves'. The gaming style isn't for everyone, and it can be a really rough game for a solo player, but the water and lighting in the game should make your 4K TV dazzle. Try it, at least for the eye candy (and awesome sound too, if you got a decent surround sound setup).

That being said, the Microsoft/xbox exclusives were a lot more appealing in the 360 days... so I don't blame you digging through the older catalogue.

Also, anyone play 'Fallout 76'? Fully aware of the gaming community pretty much trashing this game so far, but I've been enjoying it despite it's constant crashing and laundry list of bugs. Me and my brother payed little to nothing during Black Friday for the digital release. The C.A.M.P. building has been quite fun, I just hope they increase the budget!

Current generation of consoles, the exclusives are better on Playstation, thats right. But looking at my gamelist, the only "exclusive" i'll have is Quantum Break (and i haven't even played it yet), so my choice wasn't based on exclusives. Since the 360 i just stayed with Xbox, nothing to worry about.

You're welcome :)

I've been keeping a distance from anything Bethesda publishes these days, I can't even play FO4 anymore since I've upgraded my graphic card, that ancient engine ties framerate to engine speed and without resorting to manually override vertical sync to half refresh rate (that gets me only 30fps) it's unplayable.

I would extent that sentiment to Square, I've bought Just Cause 4 the other day despite negative reviews that are all over the Steam and is probably the last time they get my money for such a poor game (textures and objects pop up like crazy, 720p cutscenes, bad environment graphics, terrible gameplay...)

I'm also not a fan of online gaming anymore - after almost 10 years of playing WoW on and off I'm sick of playing with other people and now almost exclusively play single player games without any drama :)

Pum, how do you like 4k gaming? How does it work on Xbox?

I recently got a PS4, mainly for Red Dead, and also for the insane amount of PS4 exclusive titles, but just got an Xbox one S too, mainly for the UltraHD Blu Ray feature. An UltraHD player would have cost mostly the same anyway, and it's a good excuse to play again Forza Horizon 1 and 2, but also Banjo Kazooie on Xbox live Arcade. This game gets me all the time, I got more than halfway through in just two play sessions

Did anyone try to download RE2 remake demo for PC?
Page is not loading for me, not sure if it's on my end.

Edit: never mind, I got some chrome plugin interference.
But it seems it's not live for PC yet or it will only be for consoles.

Well, I did and can honestly say I don't have a clue what's happening in KH.
Story is such a mess it's hard to untangle.
So we start on equal footing :)
I think I'll get KH3, if only to see my favorite FF characters and suffer through boring Disney characters, as I did in first two. After I see reviews.

Story is a bit illogical at moments, but sets are better than any previous TR games, for my money.
Earthquake and tsunami parts were amazing, on par with Uncharted quality.

People are doing something really amazing with older games with prerendered backgrounds with neural networks.
They are upscaling 90's FF games and results are truly amazing.
Can't wait for finished mods.

Edit:I just read some reviews on KH3 and there are no FF characters in there. So not gonna play it.

They gave me some free access codes if you would like to try out the game. This is a cross-platform game with XBOX ONE and PC. I got 3 codes total that I can give out, so PM if you're interested. Codes are only good through the 13th of February.

It's hard to recommend it if you haven't played the rest of them. The remix versions would help if you can get hold them easily/cheaply. Most of the game is very much Disney and almost child like humour, but there are hints of adult themes further into the game and at the end. The way the games all tie into each other can be labelled convoluted but if it hooks you, it is worth it. As sandelic said there seem to be no final fantasy characters in kh3 which is a bummer, but the graphics and boss visuals are great

To continue from the other thread...

What is it that makes you feel sick about people becoming popular as a result of their streaming personality, Bosco? I know there are a lot of pretty gross, mean, toxic people who unfortunately gain a following as a result of them streaming a popular game, but there's also a whole tonne of really talented, nice, entertaining streamers who provide hours of content for free (assuming you don't pay them anything, which I don't). I watch one of the guys on my favourite team, Cloud 9, stream almost every night. For multiple hours. He's fun. Super good at the game. And there's something about watching something in real time that feels super connecting for me. I don't know, maybe I'm just a boring loser. But I look forward to games every weekend, watch people stream throughout the week, and play the game when I have time at home. I think I said before, it's like being able to watch a match/game of your favourite sport, every hour. Basically non-stop if you really want.

"makes me sick" was probably a bit of a hyperbole. My feelings on the subject are probably the old-school in me speaking out. But to put it simply, it's hard for me to fathom people getting payed for playing video games. I've always viewed it as a hobby. So it now being categorized as a profession, is a bit questionable in my mind.

Additionally, I do have a problem with streamers not seeking consent with other players in multiplayer game formats before broadcasting to an audience. Despite how lame that sounds, this is a breach of privacy. Then you tie in the fact some streamers get payed for their stream but don't pay out to the other participants that are non-consented, and things get really grey.

It's been a busy few weeks in terms of new games. I would need 48 hours day to play them all.

For now I'm playing Death Stranding, and I have mixed feelings. The presentation and story are incredible, but the gameplay, not so much. A lot of imprecisions, complex menus and inventory system,

I'm curious about Jedi Fallen Order. It's got pretty good reviews, and the metroidvania/metroid prime inspiration might be right up my alley.

Anyone ever try the 'Friday the 13th' game?

A fun little online multiplayer game that actually parallels the theme of the first few movies of the franchise quite well. It was released awhile ago...

The concept of the game is you have 1 player that plays Jason Voorhees that hunts down camp counselors, and 7 camp counselors that need to do anything they can to survive. It's a pretty fun little tactical game, and I think is worth checking out if you're not crazy about online shooters or skill reliant games. Even if you're not a fan of the movies or never seen any movies, there is certain charm and satisfaction of completing your task on either ends of the spectrum.

And if you enjoy finishing type kills and murdering people (à la, Mortal Kombat), you can get your rocks off here.

It is horribly buggy at times, but it's something you can excuse knowing that it's not soul selling AAA game.

It was free game to download on Xbox live if you had a gold membership, I'm not sure if it's still available, but it shouldn't be that expensive anyway. Something to look out for when Black Friday deals hit this holiday season.

It is singular gaming experience. Words cannot do it justice.

Soundtrack alone is a masterpiece, design, story, practically everything is beyond amazing, proving once again that games can be unparalleled medium for creative, artistic expression.

It filled a void I didn't even knew was there. Square outdid itself this time.

For me truly it's one those games of the decade. A masterful hack slash game right beside Devil May Cry and Bayonetta IMO. Also the soundtrack gave me those Ghost in the Shell vibes, which incremented the excitement and rush of the action even more. Awesome game all around.
Title: Re: Now Gaming
Post by: sandelic on Dec 02, 2019, 19:26
I've never played anything even remotely like it.

Not only it's masterful hack&slash, it seamlessly moves between metroid-like game, turrican-like game (if anyone remembers it, I'm sure there is modern equivalent of that old Amiga game), and it's so tightly connected with incredible music that one boss fight shoots lasers on crescendos and on chorus it starts another lethal attack, so in effect you actually dance around it and with it in ever increasing furry of its singing.

There are others, equally unique, equally though-provoking bosses.

It explores themes like loneliness, mortality, religion, even nihilism; what it is to love, to care, to help another, to sacrifice, to grow, to hate, to change.

I'll shut up now, but I'm mesmerized by it and so totally in love with it that I could go on about it for hours.

Looks great, story is interesting (I'm few hours in) and fight is really well done.
I've noticed few bugs; for instance, storm troopers attacks in t-pose from time to time, which is hilarious, but other than that, nothing else. I'm guessing it has to do with loading times.
Best of all, no micro-transaction of any kind!

I'm globally happy. I've been asking for a new Advance Wars for years, and while it's technically a remake of AW 1 and 2, I'm so happy they dug that IP out of the sand.
Also really hyped for Metroid Dread. To think it's been in development hell for 16 years and is finally coming out gives me hope for stuff like Half Life 3.
BotW2... I have to say I've never been thrilled about the idea of recycling the same map. I'd much rather have a brand new Zelda, with a new setting. And I just hope we get proper dungeons this time.
All in all, I did not expect much so I was pleasantly surprised. Still waiting for Golden Sun and a new F-Zero though

A largely underwhelming Direct I thought. I don't understand why they spend so much time going into the intricate mechanics of boring ass RPGs during a global show & tell. I completely understand that those games have fans, and that the trailer doesn't have to be for me, but spending 5 solid minutes telling us how monsters can be captured, or not captured, and combined together to make even better monsters, who may, or may not, be powerful allies, is just a huge waste of time. Show us the setting and the premise, then move on. If we're interested, we can watch the full demo.

Was hoping for more Splatoon 3 news, and the possibility of a new Mario Kart. But the BOTW2 stuff was truly exciting. I'm really hoping for a MM/OOT treatment. Same mechanics, same feel, just more out there.

Nothing that screams "I need to buy a Switch", Monkey Ball is coming to other systems too. No Rhythm Heaven/Paradise, so that's kind of disappointing IMO, but I understand why there may not be one for a while.

My second fave franchise from the big N! Kind of wish it was FPV but throwing it back to the classic side scroller takes me back to the classic NES, where I drew my own freakin maps on where to find my missiles, energy tanks, etc. I miss having gaming consoles (at one time, I owned every game console in one particular year.) But I think I had the best moments on SNES: Zelda, Actraiser, SF2, Super Contra, but Super Metroid was the one that really did it for me in terms of controls, graphics, MUSIC, and overall gameplay, in which carried into the marvelous Metroid Prime Trilogy.

I don't have a switch...yet!

Spoiler
That Aloy is a clone of Elisabet Sobeck and therefore pre-destined for her part in the events of HZD. This "the hero is chosen by fate" is a bit of an overused trope in stories, I think. Aloy is incredibly well written and I think the rest of the story would've worked well enough with her just being a "normal" person and becoming the hero by chosing to face challenges.
However it didn't bother me much, I thoroughly enjoyed the game.
Title: Re: Now Gaming
Post by: sandelic on Feb 01, 2022, 09:54
Spoiler
I think it functions well within the story. GAIA had, to stop the HADES, self-destruct and clone of Elisabet was only way for her to reboot and purge HADES, since Elisabet had access privileges.
If she was just a normal person she could not have helped GAIA in any way.
I thought that 'mysterious signal' that came out of nowhere, hundreds of years after the extinction, and messed all of GAIA's subordinate functions and turned them into AI was a weak point of the story. Maybe some explanation in new game would make sense.

Well, of course it is central to the story and everything was written with this in min. I'm just thinking the story could've also been written without the clone element.
I think I'll have to read up on the story of Zero Dawn again, as I've already forgotten about a mysterious signal. Now's a good time to refresh my memory before the new game comes out  :)

I also wanted to do a replay of HZD in the months leading up to the release of Forbidden West, but I never really found the motivation to commit to another playthrough (first one took me ~120 hours to complete everything).
Yeah, the first part is also stunning. I never fast travelled anywhere and instead walked or rode and took in the great landscapes and environments  :)

Not a real Now Gaming, but somehow also not a General Bullshit, so...

Epic Games just acquired Bandcamp

Yeah. Got the email from Bandcamp about it.
Weird acquisition. Bandcamp says not much will change, but we'll see. I really hope they don't get tanked by this. Bandcamp is the only place I've ever bought digital music from, knowing that a significant portion goes to the artists (especially on Bandcamp Fridays) - I hope that remains the case.

I can't return Elden Ring because I slightly went over the 2 hour playing time window, so no refund. The controls miss alot of hit detection so you have to lock the camera to kill baddies, but when on horseback, I'm literally next to someone I want to kill ( on my right side) and I'm sword swinging nothing but air!

Hey Guys! I really didn't know where to post this and this topic is kinda fitting
InstantReigen has made a Chemical Brothers heardle!
A heardle is a game where you have to guess a song by hearing the first seconds of a song, you only get 6 attempts to guess it. Each song will get updated daily. Enjoy !!!! ^^  ;D ;D

I just tried Wordle for the first time on Monday (BTW, wouldn't a 5-letter game name make more sense?). Mostly because I was tired of seeing people tweeting pics of funny little coloured squares and not having a clue why. Smug f***ers.

This was hard! What's that lightbulb emoji in yours?
It won't even accept non-swearwords, which actually makes it tricky to establish the letters.
Is there a list of accepted words?

It indicates I used a hint.

And I agree Lewdle is difficult. I'm not very imaginative when it comes to swear words, so this is helping me expand my crass vocabulary.

Just got my Steam Deck Email today. I haven't been this excited since San Francisco!

I got a Steam Deck a few months ago, I bought one second hand, but for a lower price than retail price, believe it or not ! Since then I received my preorder email and bought a new one and sold the first one.
And I've been thoroughly enjoying it, it's everything I hoped it would be and more. You can play most games out of the box without tinkering, with a real "console" experience, and then you can tinker all the way you want and install emulators, make normally unplayable games playable, etc

Having a handheld machine where I can play AAA games like Forza Horizon 5, God Of War, Spider-Man, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and also play ALL Zelda games ever made through emulation is incredible

I'll start on Sunday, I need whole day to spend with Guybrush and the crew.
Don't know a single thing about it (no gameplay, cast, story, nothing) and I'm already having butterflies in my tummy from sheer excitement. Can't remember last time I was so excited about a game (well, I can, Witcher 3).
But I do hope I'll see Sword Master and Murray!
MURRAY!! Bwahahahahahahaha! ROLL! ROLL through the gates of hell!

Ok, I'll see myself out...

Just got my platinum trophy on Ape Escape (PS4), it took me back to younger me spending all my time playing that game on my PS2 because it was one of the only games I had.

I'm so glad that they've put AE1 on the PS Store, another positive is that I get to listen to Terada's amazing work for the soundtrack.

(Also the fact that I can now experience the later cutscenes without any skips or freezes - the age of my disc has clearly shown whenever I play it on PS2  :( )

So yeah, I'm about halfway through Return of Monkey Island and have mixed feelings about it.

Spoiler

The "bad":
I liked the style of background art but some models in game are... interesting.
Guybrush model. His nose. Why?
Then there is voice acting. He sounds so unenthusiastic, just as Murrey does. Like a fire that has gone out. I miss that over-the-top performance they used to do. Stan is the same. And it seems new actor is voicing LeChuck, and he does a pretty good job.
Maybe I just need to get used to it, but after some hours in it's still distracting to me.

The good:
Story is ok (so far) and it's slowly develops, which I enjoy. I'm at the part where it really picks up and it seems Threepwood is gonna end up in a world of pain  ;D
Puzzles are not too hard and I rarely needed to look at the Book.
Other book, trivia book is nice addition and it freaks me out how many I got right. I don't know if I should be ashamed or proud of myself.
I would discuss humour in the game, but will refrain for the moment, because spoilers and I'm not done yet.

Title: Re: Now Gaming

It's not so much that I don't like the soundtracks (I even bought all of the Horizon music) but that it throws me out of the game world. I often feel like an orchestra is following me around, when I want to be immersed in the sounds coming from the game world. I know that this is very uncommon, but for me background music can pretty much destroy the atmosphere a game is trying to create, rather than emphasize/enhance it, as most people feel.
Fortunately, most game devs understand this, and the background music can be turned off separately.

A majority of the players in my current dnd campaign are playing it. They're now pointing out where all our sheets and items are wrong. For instance, we've been playing for a year that rapiers are one-handed weapons. Now I have to retcon my character...

I'll get to playing it eventually...

But Rapiers are one-handed weapons. At least in the real world (afaik) and in the Pathfinder RPG (I think the Pathfinder rules are based on DnD?). Also, that's a very very very very important plot point in one of my favourite book series (The Locked Tomb series).

Supposedly they're now two-handed in baldurs gate 3! I don't know why. I blame my DM.

That's weird. I'd check the rulebook(s) you're using rather than a game, because a two-handed rapier just doesn't make sense to me.
Title: Re: Now Gaming
Post by: sandelic on Aug 22, 2023, 15:10
It's called versatile in 5th edition.
You can use it as one hand weapon dealing 1d8 or as a two-hand weapon dealing 1d10 dmg.
You can dual-wield any light weapon without feat.
This is for long sword, I suspect it's the same for rapiers too, and I'm positive rapier is indeed one-handed weapon.
5th edition is hilarious, I must admit.
My barbarian passed arcane check in first 30 minutes of the game. I fell on the floor laughing.

I finally started Baldur's Gate 3 this week and I am completely overwhelmed.
Thankfully I know RPG/DND rules a bit from playing Pathfinder, but hell, the game isn't exactly forthcoming with tutorials for game mechanics. It's still a lot of fun to play though!
Title: Re: Now Gaming
Post by: sandelic on Sep 30, 2023, 09:41
Now that I think about it, there are no tutorials in BG3, are there?
I remember reading an interview with the developers where they claim whole first act is a tutorial.
I am quite familiar with D&D rules (ok, familiar with 2nd edition rules) and transition to 5th edition was somewhat smooth but yeah, to someone not accustomed to D&D it would be overwhelming, rightly so.
I'm sure you know this by now but two words - throw and push.
Those two actions are my favorite. Just don't push a boss into some chasm. Hard to pick up loot afterwards  ;D
