Title: Concerts you've been to
Post by: Ben_j on Jul 18, 2015, 00:45
Tonight I went to the Fnac Live festival in Paris, which is a free festival in front of the Paris city hall, (and a few hundred meters from Notre Dame)

I saw The Shoes, who really blew my mind. I was not expecting much and they delivered a really punchy live show, with awesome visuals made mostly from internet memes and gifs (as you can see in the video below). Truly a great live show, which is not often the case with this kind of bands.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyT6rDy5IWU

There was also Etienne De Crecy, playing the Super Discount live show with Julien Delfaud and Alex Gopher, and Baxter Dury as a special guest, performing the track he was featured on with them. It was a great show, but I was not blown away. I already knew what to expect I guess (since I saw them 1 year ago)

Concerts I've been to this year so far:

Eric Prydz - San Francisco @ Mezzanine (3/14/15)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gQPf9giapo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gQPf9giapo)

I've seen Eric Prydz a couple of times before and he never disappoints. It's not quite as "live" in the electronic music or performance style that one would hope for, but he's an amazing producer and knows how to put together an awesome show.

Florence & the Machine - San Francisco @ The Masonic Theater (4/8/15)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbeI710XuqU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbeI710XuqU)

I was very surprised how much I enjoyed this show. I went with my girlfriend because she didn't want to go alone, and I was rather glad I went. The energy among the audience was fantastic, and I really, really enjoyed myself.

The Acid - Los Angeles @ the El Rey (5/8/15)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_GVU7FdhhU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_GVU7FdhhU)

I've given Liminal a tremendous number of listens since the album came out, and I have really enjoyed the unique sounds they have going on. They did not disappoint me in their live set--they had a good mix of emotion and a dance-ish vibe going throughout the whole set, and it was nice to hear the things they chose to improvise on.

Feb: FKA Twigs at London Roundhouse
March: Caribou at Brixton Academy (loud!)
March: Fat White Family (plus Palma Violets & Slaves) at London Forum
March: Underworld at Hammersmith Apollo
April: Rone live laptop gig at Rough Trade East records, was only meant to play 30/40 mins. Did an hour.
April: Gang of Four (as part of Record Store Day, in a street)
May: Prodigy at Alexandra Palace (last minute cheap ticket after the gig had started)
June: Field Day Festival. Saturday: Caribou (again!),  Ghost Culture live, Daniel Avery B2b Andrew Weatherall DJ set, Django Django, Ten Walls live (the day before the homophobic thing blew up), Phillip Selway (radiohead), Tuneyards, and more.
June: Field Day, Sunday: Allah Las, Patti Smith playing Horses in full, Justin Robertson DJ set, and the mighty RIDE.
June: Leftfield at London Forum
Gone a bit quiet now. Probably New Order in November.  And maybe...Chems if they play a London gig by Christmas?

I'm old. I need to get out more. But in April, at last minute I saw an interestingly eclectic and diversely talented Ukrainian band called DakhaBrakha.

There's a serious lack of very good concerts around here, but the ones I did get to see long time ago was:

2005 - Moby
2006 - Fatboy Slim, Jamiroquai
2008 - Nine Inch Nails
2009 - Oasis

aaaandd... that's it.

This year has been kind of slow (although there have actually been some good shows in Cincinnati I had to miss)

Umphrey's McGhee (sp?) - saw them for free.   not really into alot of jam band type stuff, but I enjoyed them (encore was covers of "Hey Nineteen" and "Sledgehammer).

Bunburry, day 1 - Tame Impala was amazing, but a crazy storm cut the set down to only 30 mins.  Temples were awesome, Royal Blood kicked ass, Black Keys phoned it in because that is what they do these days.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - the most rock n roll show I will see all year.  Seriously.

But none of this matters because in Chicago this Sept. I will be seeing The Chems for the fourth time and The Orb for the first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Orb
1. Oh cool.
2. Wait, they have a new album out.
3. Wait, it's some of the best stuff they've done since Ultraworld.
4. Wait, they're playing near me!
5. I think my wallet's going to start hating me too.

$20 for Dr. Lx LIVE is a steal.  Been to Metro 3x (Love & Rockets with Dandy Warhols in 96, Kid Koala with Dj Food in 2001, and Amon Tobin, Prefuse 73, and Bonobo with Mr. Scruff downstairs in Smart Bar in 2003), not my fave Chicago venue (reminds me of Cincinnati's Bogarts with way better sound).

After Sept., I will have seen The Chems (All State Arena 2001, Rivera 2007, North Coast 2010), The Orb, Meat Beat Manifesto (House Of Blues, Halloween @ Midnight 97), and Coldcut (Abbey Pub, 2005)/Dj Food (I'm cheating and counting them as one).  That would be four of my all time top five electronic acts.  The elusive Orbital is mocking me...sigh.

This one is worth sharing, the most insane concert I've ever been. Just look at the crowd at 1:45.
Rage Against the Machine Battle for Santiago City (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjLvPbVFV2U)
Bloody nose, bruises, BIGGEST mosh pit ever. Best concert I've been too.

Even Morello agrees. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FupB3wetdM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FupB3wetdM)

My metal coworker introduced me to 'Time To Dance' a few weeks ago and I'm still kicking myself for not discovering it earlier.

As for me this year...

Caribou back in April

BadPlus & Joshua Redman in June
GoGo Penguin in June
Presidents of the United States next week
hopefully Chems at Electric Zoo

Haha, yes it's a beautiful site to see a show. They've been doing this free festival for 6 years now, there are always good acts. It's really cool to have that, right in the heart of Paris, for free !

Nice! Would loved to have gone to field day. I went to see RIDE in May in the barrows in Glasgow, blown away! Going to see them again in Newcastle and Edinburgh in October. Was at Mogwai for their 20th anniversary show, amazing as always. Can't really remember if I've been to any shows earlier in the year...I'm getting old!

sort of on topic:  What is the best opening act you have ever seen?

My response is easily the opener for Juliana Hatfield in 1995, who was Jeff Buckley.  I'm embarrassed to admit I had no idea who he was until he played "Last Goodbye."  He did "Hallelujah" immediately followed by "Kick Out The Jams."

Julianna Hatfield? Haven't heard that name in a long time. She probably wishes she was revered as much as James Buckley is now.
It's a challenging question because it means trying to remember every gig you've been  to, and who the support was. It's difficult to narrow it down to one. But off the top of my head...
Dandy Warhols supporting David Bowie in '03 (though I believe the Polyphonic Spree supported him for part of that tour; I still haven't seen them!)
Maximo Park supporting New Order in '06
The XX supporting The Big Pink in '09 at the ICA (there were four members back then). I spoke to Romy afterwards to tell her I enjoyed it as she mingled with a glass of wine in her hand.
Hot Chip supporting LCD Soundsystem at LCD's last ever London gig. They were sort of billed equally although LCD were clearly the headliners on the night.

That was the pinnacle of U2's greatness for me. I saw them 5 times (at least I think it was 5, it may have been 4, I'd have to dig out my ticket stubs) on the Zoo TV tour. I had seen them on the Unforgettable Fire tour and twice on the Joshua Tree tour, but they were a different beast entirely during the Achtung Baby days. It was the start of the 90's, an exciting time in general and an exciting time to be a young adult!

Just came back from Danny Elfman's Music from the films of Tim Burton, at the Grand Rex, a wonderful venue. Oh my god, it was amazing ! I shed many tears, during the themes from Batman, Catwoman, and Ice Dance from Edward Scissorhands... But the obvious highlight was Danny Elfman performing the songs from the Nightmare Before Christmas. And the theme from Alice in Wonderland perfectly concluded the show. It was just an ok movie but the main theme is one of Elfman's best

I saw Autechre earlier in this month at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple.
They performed with no lights whatsoever in the dark, pretty crazy set.

This year has been a very Warp Records year for me with live shows...
I got see Squarepusher live with Machinedrum... Then I saw Clark live with Nosaj Thing and Rival Consoles

Went to a Matthew Dear DJ gig last night. It was a pretty small crowd and he definitely acknowledged you if you were really enjoying the music. He played some song that went, "take it again. do it again" and I was like, "DO IT AGAIN!" as if it were Do It Again. He smirked at that as he did an insane Do It Again remix as Audion. He spun for 2 or 3 hours and just kept a powerful, steady beat the whole time. He is very technical as well, so there were only 1 or 2 audible mistakes. Now he needs to release a new album and do a live tour.

New Order at Brixton Academy on Monday night (+ decent support from The Horrors).

They came on stage to a projection of the French flag and dedicated their Joy Division encore to the victims of the attacks.
Gotta admit I was a little jumpy for the first few minutes of the gig but then the music  pushed aside all negative thoughts.
A five star review from The Guardian (http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/nov/17/new-order-review-pure-serotonin-for-an-existential-ache). I probably would have given it a four star review myself.
Looks like Eddy Chemical, ahem, followed in my footsteps (https://instagram.com/p/-MxlCFng_h/) by going to the second night yesterday.

Tame Impala last night (with fellow forumites ChemicalMat, Bouh and Flyghost). It was short but good. It lacked some older tunes that I would have loved to hear (Alter Ego, Endors Toi, Sundown Syndrome, Half full glass of wine...), but they priviledged tracks from the new album it seems.

Been to another show of Biosphere at the Prague's Planetarium. Biosphere is one of the legends of ambient music. If anyone is in this kind of sound, I recommend his albums "Substrata" or "Shenzhou". His music together with the video mapping visualisation made specially for this gig, was so trippy experience.

Recording of hist first show at the planetarium two years ago:

Tame Impala last night (with fellow forumites ChemicalMat, Bouh and Flyghost). It was short but good. It lacked some older tunes that I would have loved to hear (Alter Ego, Endors Toi, Sundown Syndrome, Half full glass of wine...), but they priviledged tracks from the new album it seems.

I don't get out as much as I should but a few months back I saw a nostalgia mini fest with Garbage, The Cult, and the closer Jane's Addiction. Well, a couple of Jane's Addiction songs in and we bailed it was so bad). But hey it was one of the last shows ever at a local, now-demolished ampitheater. And tickets were super cheap on Groupon, so why the heck not?  Then last month we saw Jello Biafra. Punk in my conservative county is still alive and well, haha! Nazi punks can fuck right off. His show was a ton of fun with a mosh pit on the floor and everything. The whole gig kicked ass!

Two weeks ago I set up this concert in a classroom with my radio station - we're doing a series of pop-up gigs around campus with local bands (because there's nowhere for anyone small to play in this town besides bars). Stud Fox, a noisy psychedelic band, and City Mist, an indie rock group I'm producing an album with right now played. I ran sound with a buddy of mine but most importantly, my wife used the classrooms old overhead projector and did a liquid light show for the performances, on the spot! Some pics and a video...

I'm sorry if I'm derailing this thread ,  but I'm going to continue posting about upcoming shows and or festivals. Let me know if you want me to open a new thread.

That being said...

I think I'm pulling the plug on this year's Coachella. In exchange, I plan to hit a ton of shows that we'll be playing locally. The amount of artists I'm interested in seeing is truly ridiculous. Saw Dutch Uncles last night at a venue I've never been to in Southampton (35 minutes drive away, free parking on the streets nearby - perfect!)

They were fantastic. Mathy. Angular. Riffy. But incredibly tight the whole time.
Super charming too. Duncan, when he wasn't throwing awkward shapes around the stage, would regale the crowd with stories of their tour so far (smashing his hand through glass, being asked to join an orgy, not being able to check in to a Travelodge and having to stay at a 4* hotel) and how normally they had a no-Sunday-shows policy but that we had proved that rule unnecessary.

Summary: Lots of fun.

I suppose if you have a low tolerance for his newer Electronica trancey stuff, it might turn you off.

I managed to track down a ticket on Craigslist to the sold out 'Mike Doughty performs Irresistible Bliss' show last night. What a treat.

I love that album. It was great to hear it in a completely different context. Just Mike on his guitar and a super funny dude on cello adding a little mystery and mood to the songs.
With the first couple of tracks I was a little taken a back - I guess I was expecting a more upbeat rendition of the songs but I settled into the more melancholic performance and then was hit with this beauty...

Really just a great way to experience one of my favourite albums. Mike was just as charming and Mike-y as I was hoping too.
Good times.

CORNELIUS!!!

I was a little undecided about going, for reasons I'm not really clear on anymore. It was a bloody treat though. Every track was phenomenal. Stunning visuals. Excellent performance. And to top it all off, I only had to walk 5 minutes back to my apartment! (that's a revelation to me - I would normally be home upwards of an hour and a half after a show finished in England)

This is a clip of them playing Drop from a show in New York earlier in the year, just to give you an idea of how tasty they sounded.

I'm just back from Ed Banger's 15 anniversary orchestral concert. And boy did they deliver. You can watch it all here : (although I'm not sure this is available outside of France)

Alternatively it was live on Facebook too (https://www.facebook.com/Culturebox/videos/10156374842019656/)

The obvious highlight of the show was the lenghty Justice part at the end, especially Stress. My other personnal favourite was I <3 U So by Cassius, which is perfect for this kind of reinterpretation

Likewise - next Friday night. From the clips online looks an awesome show, as ever with DB.

Saw TheThe last night at the Albert Hall - 29 years after first seeing them. Fantastic show, really tight band, setlist from across his career, great atmosphere, emotional as he dedicated it to his dad who passed away at the weekend.  They're playing a few dates around UK/Ireland and N America over the next few months - if you get a chance, try to see them.

And LCD Soundsystem the week before in Glasgow - great as always.  How Do You Sleep is just superb live.

And to top off a great gig month - Flight of the Conchords the week after next...

A couple of live members (Josh Hager, Jeff Freidl) of the current/recent version of Devo have teamed up with a couple of newer members of New Order to form Shadowparty. They've just played a handful of low key gigs in the UK. The album is out in July, probably with more gigs to come. So you might have to wait til after they've done that.

A tweet from Denise "Sceamadelica" Johnson here. She does backing vox on six tracks on the album. Loads of other guests on the album from members of The Verve to Steve Perry of Journey (!).

Seeing She Wants Revenge tonight to continue the conquest of seeing Chems related artists (in this case Justin Warfield)

it's been over a month since, but here is a quick riot fest review:

definitely a down year overall, music was far more "relaxing" than energetic

friday:
speedy ortiz was great, liz phair killed it, aquabats were fun, digable planets -> atmosphere -> cypress hill was a great hip hop friday fun timez

saturday:
they put everything in a 2 hour time frame and i missed a lot because of terrible scheduling...
GARY NUMAN - got to see him perform Cars twice in a day, his set was my favorite of the day,
first casualty (did not get to see reignwolf)
cat power and wolfmother were fantastic
the voidz started like at least 10 mins late so missed them because elvis costello was playing as well
jerry lee lewis was there, had to miss out on jesus lizard
interpol was great as expected
BECK! Too bad he played 4 new songs, none of which were Dear Life or Colors, Up all night, wow, and im so free were just so bad. he cant even rap the im so free stuff, fucking Taylor Swift got in his ear and to me she is the equivalent of the wrath of khan ear worms. "SWWIIIIIIIIFT!!" - James T. Kirk

BUT - Gary Numan came out during Beck's set and they performed Cars. Was not expecting this at all, great surprise. Message to Beck: please drop Colors stuff in next tour. I got a lot of people who have never seen you to commit to seeing your set. The new stuff really turned them off, it was not the festival to drop a "say WOOOOOW like owen wilson" joke. Odelay was what people wanted. I know you are probably sick of that album, but it's riot fest yo

sunday:
calpurnia - hey if you are famous in any other facet of life, congratulations, you, too, can start a generic band!!! I'm still waiting for snooki, conan o'brien, and pauly shore supergroup, "Pauly's Jersey and the Sures" suffice to say a sad moment for music

checked out a little of kevin devine, definitely emotional music, I'd like to see him at an indoor venue now
JD Mcpherson! dynamite performance
caught tail end of Fear, a little of spitalfield, and then the avengers. just a "walk around in hot sun" half hour for me
Johnny Marr killed it. Saw a little bit of bouncing souls, then went to suicidal tendencies because when a band goes "this song is for all the moms in the world" followed by the lyrics "i saw your mommy and your mom is dead" you know you have made a good choice.

father john misty was a great "chill out before run the jewels" group. I wanted to be at his stage, but wanted to actually riot at riot fest, at run the jewels. They had great to-the-point PSAs

Overall, one of the less exciting Riot Fests I have attended, but it was a cursed year, they pulled a rabbit out of their blood-clot-filled passport

edit: totally forgot to mention blondie. hell yeah, blondie

blondie, hell yeah

I saw Spiritualized last week. I've seen them before but it has been several years since the last time I saw J Spaceman do his thing. The show was utterly beautiful - from the venue, to the 10 piece choir, to the string section, to the horn section... Amazing, amazing, amazing. I dare say I teared up more than a couple of times throughout. ;)  It was exactly what I needed at that moment.

Went to see Slayer's last ever gig in Ireland last night. Obituary opened the show, they were OK. Anthrax were next, they were brilliant, never seen them live before. Lamb of God were main support but I really wasn't into them.
Slayer came out and played an hour and 40 mins of sheer intensity. Great energy from the legends, Tom Araya took his time to walk the stage from end to end after the finished just soaking it all in. Been a minute since I was at a metal concert, forgot about the sweat, the unique mix of bodies and booze that hits your nose and engulfs your clothes. Knees and neck a bit worse for wear today, gonna have to work out in the gym a bit more before Metallica next summer. (Totally not getting old)

The day before flying out from Chicago to Mexico, got to finally see a certain Matthew Dear perform live (every time I have seen him prior, he was DJing). He did not stick around much after his set, as he had a gig in New York the next day. I got to say "hey, you were great!" and get a quick handshake. He is super personable on stage. If you have not checked out Bunny, you betta. It is, overall, probably his best album since Asa Breed (and this includes Audion's Alpha, which is a great album too!). Can You Rush Them is A++. One of my top 10 songs of the year. He apparently recently got an Octatrack (looks like MKII) and he completely revamped the song DESERTER WOOOAAWW

Oh no, I saw that on twitter. I saw them in London (Ally Pally) just before they started their South American tour and they were on great form. They're definitely re-arranging the gig though. Gillian said so:

Went to Berlin three weeks ago to see two artists. One being Aphex Twin who played a great eclectic set covering all kind of music styles (of electronic music) from ambient, over breakbeats, techno, to noise with Bicep's Orca track being my highlight of the night. I don't really dig the studio version of the track, but it sounds so awesome when played live.

The other artist were Khruangbin and these guys were just amazing. Great guitar player, spot-on drummer and one sexy bassist:

this artist Sarah Jarosz.. but its mixed with electronica as well and all the ex guys from XTC are fans?? ( even though I think she is in her 20's and from Texas) its a bit moody and dark as well.. she played a Month ago in South Carolina and it was pretty good (the electronica violin is pretty amazing)

Kool Keith (of the acclaimed Dr. Octagon shout out BOSCOOOOOO) bringing some xmas cheer. Bushwick Bill was also there. Juicy J may have been? Can someone look at the last pic and identify all on stage? It was a fucking weird night. Kool Keith did like 8 minutes of standup towards the end. It was genuinely both the worst standup, but I stayed for all of it. Still on the fence to this day about those 8 minutes.

Just got home from Detroit.  Kinda shocking I had never been there before.  Did first day of Movement.  Wink was great, Soul Clap had me moving the little I saw of Disclosure's dj was hot, Wajatta was tits (awesome acid from John Tejada, great and hilarious vocals/general goofy fun from Reggie Watts).  Orbital blew my fucking mind.  Holy shit.  Only complaint was Seriously?  Nothing from InSides???  Then I went to the Soul Clap after party at TV Lounge.  Left at 6am, went to bed at 7am, fell asleep sometime after 9, checkout was 11.  Fuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh

How would you grade the festival overall?

The closest I came to thinking of going to this fest was back when Kraftwerk played in 2016. I had already seen them twice and I foolishly thought they would make their way back to Chicago in the near future. Obviously was wrong on that...

While I would love to see the Chems headline at Movement, North America is due for a DJ set from the Bros (10 years since Coachella 2009). I feel like this festival would be a perfect landing for that.

A fucking plus, if you don't like good beer or don't mind spending $10 for a tall boy of bud light.  Mostly awesome crowd, a few people who don't know how to not invade personal space when walking through a crowd, but whatever.  That Soul Clap party was still banging when we left at 6am.  It went until noon.  A lot of those people were going all 3 days.  Detroit is just fucking crazy.

Had a great time watching  New Order  headline on Sunday evening at BlueDot Festival , UK , they performed a powerful and vibrant set which included classics like Temptation , True Faith , The Perfect Kiss , Blue Monday ,  we got a lovely version of Your Silent Face ,  and they played 4 Joy Division songs  , . . She's Lost Control , Transmission , Atmosphere and Love will Tear us Apart which closed their set ,  impressive visuals throughout ,  epic.

Just saw The Lips for the 10th time.  Was really hoping for either almost all of the gorgeously demented fairy tale of their new album or a shit ton of Priest Driven Ambulance (I like extremes), but settled for a wonderful (yet, short set) that gave me the feels.

Opening was Lennon Claypool Delirium.  Holy.  Shit.  They did Tomorrow Never Knows.

Any Prodigy people out there who live in the UK , there's a pretty good Prodigy tribute band called The Jilted Generation , i went to see them last night. They play tracks from every Prodigy album , nice and loud at small venues. They have a drummer on stage to compliment the pounding beats and baselines. The guy behind the decks / synths does actually look like Liam Howlett , the Keith Flint guy looks similar and dances alike , and the Maxim guy does a fair job on vocals. So you're hearing the actual Prodigy track and they're adding their own effects and obviously live vocal over the top , it works well , the crowd were into it , lots of dancing and moshing going on , i sweated buckets and loved it , probably attempted to dance like Leeroy Thornhill at some point too , lol.

My other recent gig was Pixies , absolutely fantastic , they played lots of tracks from their new album Beneath the Eyrie , as well as live favourites from Doolittle , Bossanova and Trompe le Monde. They're touring Europe now having done several gigs around the UK.

My final big concert of the year will be The Chemical Brothers in a couple of months , yessahh !!

The first concert I went to this year was Amanda Palmer in Vienna. Even though I don't listen to her music that often these days, seeing her playing live is always fun. Also, a few hours before the gig, she did a free open-air concert in the park right in front of the beautiful St. Charles Church.

The second show this year was Tim Minchin in Oxford. First time I ever saw him live, and he's absolutely hilarious. Let's hope he doesn't take another eight year break from touring :)

And now it's just about one month to go until the Chems shows in Birmingham and London  ;D

And, you'll all be incredibly pleased and excited to hear that it was a K-Pop group that I sat in my comfy seat at home and watched! Fourth of July? More like Fourth of (G)I-DLE  8)

Last week I went to a very nice festival in Buenos Aires: Music Wins. I saw !!!: amazing!! very powerful set, but only for 30 min, at 15hs... with a 35° C... without any cloud in the sky :o
Later saw Alvvays and Crumb, really really nice. At the night Chet Faker, a very good surprise, never heard it  before. And the reason I went to that festival: metronomy, woow... they were awesome, clean sound, a lot of dance and the crowd were nuts. Very good way to end this 2022, the year the concerts came back!

I went to see Kraftwerk in Buenos Aires, Argentina last Tuesday and in Santiago de Chile on Thursday. They were amazing! They are doing a "new" show... There is no 3D screen anymore, now there is an LED screen and some other things (their costumes are in sync with the visuals). Fritz Hilpert is also not there, it seems that he will no longer tour and honestly his absence was noticeable ... Anyway, my heart is 50% for the Chems and the other 50% for the Robots, so I am more than happy! And well, considering Ralf's age, I think this is the last time they return to South America.

Glad to read that you caught a couple of the South American shows. Was fortunate to catch them in Chicago last year which (also) presumably, will be the last time with Ralf.

The 3D part of the show didn't really add that much to the performance, imo. But the glasses they gave away was an awesome souvenir!

I saw the Flaming Lips a couple weeks ago for the 20th anniversary of Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, and had the best time! It was my second time seeing them and they do not disappoint! They played the full album and had the lyrics on the screen so
folks could sing along. Then after they played the full album start to finish, they played a whole n'other set filled with array of songs from across their catalog. Wayne Coyne said they'd play until they kicked us out, and that's pretty much what happened! Like two shows in one! Their visuals were bright and fun and trippy, and who doesn't like robots? We got 4 giant inflatable pink ones wiggling about onstage at various intervals throughout the show! Fun crowd mixed bag of ages which was cool. Just a fabulous fun and uplifting show that had me grinning from ear to ear long after the houselights went on. And it made me fall in love with Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots all over again... loved it and anyone even remotely thinking of seeing The Flaming Lips should just do it!

I never thought I would see The Cure live, it was an incredible 2 and a half hour show, Robert has an impeccable voice and they played hit after hit, amazing. I'm not a big fan of Blur, but they did a beautiful show. Beck was also excellent, he invited Damon Albarn to sing The Valley of the Pagans by Gorillaz.

The Charlatans keep alluding me (I missed their show when they were in Los Angeles last year) but I got a chance to see them with Ride last Saturday at the beautiful Wiltern theater in Los Angeles! It was a fun show, older crowd (and by older, I mean people my age lol) and for some extra added excitement there was a false fire alarm in which those of us in the mezzanine were prompted to evacuate briefly (the charlatans kept on playing!) The tour is celebrating Ride's Nowhere and the Charlatans' Between 10th and 11th.  It was my second time seeing the Charlatans and my first time seeing Ride, and it made me realize yet again that I've been missing out and need to see more live music! Tim had sweet stage presence and was filming the audience (and blowing them kisses 😘). The show also made me realize just how much I appreciate Tony Rogers as he's just so fabulous on keys! I wasn't able to stay for Ride's full set as I had to get home, so hopefully can catch them again sometime soon. They were excellent! For those in the US, check Ride and the Charlatans - they are still touring here and the double bill is too good to miss out!

Was back in DC for the first time in five years last week to visit friends. Every time when back, I make a point to see a random show at a DC / DMV area music venue. Went to to see Wild Party at DC9 last Sunday. DC9 is a cherished venue shows costing $15-20 for amazing low-mid level touring acts (seen Holy Fuck, Dungen there). The Wild Party sound was cheesy indie-rock pop...but it was really heartwarming and fun.

A key highlight was the final song (First Two Days With You). The singer went mid crowd with an acoustic guitar, told the house to kill the lights, and had everyone use their phone lights. I stood at the back marvelling at the raw voice and guitar surrounded by a solar system of lights. At the bridge, the rest of band on stage joined in with a hard section followed by a fade out to just a banjo and the acoustic guitar. It was a very intimate moment I've rarely felt in a "small" crowd (~150 people).

This weekend I went to Buenos Aires to Lollapalooza. I saw a lot of bands from my teenage years: Limp Bizkit, Blink 182, The Offspring. They were incredible, especially Limp Bizkit. I also saw Arcade Fire, Phoenix (twice because they did a sideshow), Jungle, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Dayglow among others. And lastly I saw Sza, Hozier and Sam Smith which I didn't like, a bit boring.
