Loved Demon Days. The other two albums not as much.

Certainly curious to hear what the next album sounds like.

The first album was and still is fantastic. I come back to it all the time. Party due to my love of Del Tha Funky Homosapien.

Demon Days I don't listen to all that much any more, and wasn't super into when it came out (though the B sides from that era are the best... "Bill Murray" feat. The Bees anyone???)

And I was obsessed with Plastic Beach when it came out. I cried when I saw them and Little Dragon playing Fire Ants at the Roundhouse, it was beautiful. But I'm never really in the mood to listen to it these days, though I still think it's great.

Definitely excited to hear some new stuff.

Like the first album a lot. Demon Days is great, especially the first half. Not a fan of Plastic Beach at all (except the Mos Def song. I think it is one their best songs). Have not really listened to anything else, oddly enough. I should probably get on that...

I love all 3 albums, although I don't listen to Demon Days as much as the two others. I can't wait for the new one, especially with all the featurings it will feature.

Yeah. I love Deltron.
Saw them at Glastonbury a couple of years ago. They did Clint Eastwood too...

Yeah... I don't know that this immediately grabbed me. In fact, it left me with a bizarre taste in my mouth, as the saying goes.

More post-modern art-house poetry reading. Less pop music.

Disappointing.

Blur comeback album was kinda meh (especially after hearing the two new songs they did for the "ParkLive" dvd).  Every Gorillaz album has come through...BUT I really just want a follow up to The Good, The Bad, & The Queen.

Yeah. Lots of people are trying to argue that this is typical of Gorillaz and that we shouldn't be worried about the rest of it. And to be fair, there have been a few in between 'singles' that were a little odd.
But this is their first offering from the new album. It needs to be compared to Clint Eastwood, Feel Good Inc. and Stylo. And it's not as good as anyone of those (not that they're the best either).
It's freakin' weird and not very interesting and doesn't bode well, honestly.
Title: Re: Gorillaz
Post by: rynostar on Jan 23, 2017, 20:04
In terms of sounding like Gorilaz...It sounds more like a b/g-side. That said, it still sounds like something that they/Albarn would write.

As for why they lead off with it...and releasing it the day before the Inauguration... no hidden meaning from an artistic standpoint in my mind (aong with the fact they reference it in the descriptor). I'm more amazed that the record execs allowed it. Actually, I'm more amazed they allowed the Spongebob clip at the end.

Reminds me of the late 90's watching MTV2 at 2AM. The internet was still new, so seeing weird music videos like this on cable TV would blow away my sheltered little brain. As a matter of fact, "Let Forever Be" "Afrika Shox" and "Rabbit in Your Headlights" were gateways into introducing electronic music, and beyond.

So I agree, the song doesn't "do it for me". But I thought it was interesting.

I think it's the one that leaked a few days ago. It was ok. Better than Hallelujah Money, much more musical than it, but still not on the level I expect from Gorillaz

Title: Re: Gorillaz
Post by: MadPooter on Apr 25, 2017, 04:36
I don't love the album, but fantastic production.

There are a couple of tracks that I like on it that sound more like the classic "Gorillaz" sound (Andromeda, Sex Murder Party, Saturnz Barz). There are a couple of tracks that are too generic (Strobelite), and a couple that stray too far away from what I might expect the Gorillaz to sound like, and not in a good way (Carnival, Hallelujah Money).

Title: Re: Gorillaz
Post by: MadPooter on Apr 27, 2017, 02:36
The album is growing on me.

Ascension in particular. It has that Feel Good, Inc. vibe about it.

Although, I was watching The Big Short last night and Feel Good, Inc. came on during part of the film. That is an extraordinary track, and I think it clearly set a bar with me.

Still not a fan of Strobelite. Meh.
Title: Re: Gorillaz
Post by: Enjoyed on Apr 27, 2017, 14:11
There's a lot of meh on the album for me.

Andromeda is still great (harmonies at 2:47 are absolutely the highlight of the album). And I like Saturnz Barz and We Got The Power a lot. Ascension is growing on me too. And I really enjoy Busted and Blue, without any guests crowding Damon doing his thing.

Glad I didn't chuck a whole lot of money at tickets and deluxe albums though. I'll stick to jamming out to Rock The House.

Title: Re: Gorillaz
Post by: neorev on Apr 28, 2017, 00:57
Yeah, I'm just not feeling much from this album. The good stuff is few and far between. At the moment, it's on the bottom of my Gorillaz album list. I think I like The Fall more.  I dunno, it just doesn't feel like Gorillaz to me. Their albums always felt like they had a flow to them. This feels more like a collection of tracks.
Title: Re: Gorillaz

Through my first listen, and I thought my overall experience was better than Plastic Beach. It has no strong single, but I'm pretty happy with it.

Wish Ben Mendelssohn was used even more. Would have been awesome to utilize him in story telling mode like Dennis Hopper. And I'll say it again, check him out on Netflix's first season of 'Bloodline'. You won't regret it.

I think I've given the album a few good listens and I don't know that I really want to listen to it anymore.

I found myself wanting to skip through a *lot* of it the last time through, sadly.

At the end of the day it's nice to hear new music, and especially new music from the Gorillaz.

But also at the end of the day, Sick Boy's words echo in my mind...

Super-Duper Box Set on it's way...

http://pitchfork.com/news/73354-gorillaz-humanz-box-set-features-14-unreleased-songs/

Amazon US has a pre-sale price of $499.99, which seems really excessive.

https://www.amazon.com/Humanz-Super-Deluxe-GORILLAZ/dp/B06XW1PXHM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1494194869&sr=8-1&keywords=gorillaz+box+set

Quote
The Super Deluxe Vinyl Box Set of the new Gorillaz album 'Humanz' is presented across 14 individual pieces of different coloured 12" vinyl, packaged in individually art-worked sleeves. Each piece of vinyl features an album track, backed with an exclusive alternative version. The box also includes a 54-page, cloth-bound, foil-blocked, hardback book featuring exclusive Gorillaz artwork by Jamie Hewlett plus a download card, all housed in a bespoke 12" vinyl case.

I personally like the album, but this feels like R.A.M. all over again...

Unlike the last few albums, Albarn will be the primary focus on vocals for this album. I'm anticipating another great one.

Really dig 'Humility' and I continue to applaud the wide range of styles and influences they incorporate. Such a fun and great project band.

Also, Damon finishing up the second The Good, the Bad & the Queen Album.

New tracks are much better than anything on Humanz. Humanz was a big disappointment, a forgettable record. This has that Gorillaz vibe.
Title: Re: Gorillaz
Post by: Enjoyed on Jun 02, 2018, 04:50
Humility is growing on me.

But Lake Zurich... Is it even Gorillaz? It sounds nothing like anything they've done. And not in a 'ah cool, they're trying something new' way but rather a '... this could be anyone' way.

I'm keen to hear a Gorillaz that is less polluted by guest spots. I still think their/his first album is by far the best, and back then it was basically just Del on the guest front. But this just feels like Damon trying something new, and looking to use Gorillaz as an output for it. It doesn't really feel like Gorillaz to me at all, whereas Humanz, as boring and not great as it was, at least felt like a Gorillaz album.
Title: Re: Gorillaz
Post by: neorev on Jun 02, 2018, 06:53
The first album is definitely their best. But they haven't sounded like Gorillaz since Plastic Beach. These 2 new tracks sound more Gorillaz than anything on Humanz. Does it make these new tracks amazing? No. But they're a bit more Gorillaz-ish at least. I still won't rank them above anything from their first 3 albums. I didn't hear Gorillaz at all with Humanz. Humanz was a mess of collaborations and felt like it had no direction. But so far, nothing has topped their debut.
