Title: 9. September 2016, Gelsenkirchen, Germany
Post by: Stefan on May 04, 2016, 18:23
They just announced a show on September 9th in Gelsenkirchen, Germany:
https://twitter.com/ChemBros/status/727903393742786562

http://www.ticketmaster.de/event/178221?camefrom=de_thechemicalbrothers

Apparently a non-festival show!

The venue looks great:

Err, it's not that near... But who knows!

Fu#k, I just realized that's their one and only Germany gig they'll be doing?!?!? What the heck, grrr!

This one is tempting.

I may well be visiting the better side of Europe over the summer and this could work.

Csar, don't you live in Germany? How is that not near? You know it's 2016, the cold war is over, the Berlin wall came down.

Definitely going to this one! The Venue looks fun and it isn't all that far from where I live - i'll see you there!

I think I'll be going to this one in stead of Pukkelpop. Amfitheather looks cool (red rocksy?) and it's a shorter drive, 1hr45min.

P.S. no Holland shows yet??

Düsseldorf and Köln aren't too far away. They're good fun and pretty.
But literally any German city will be great. Just go find a decent place to drink and gobble up delicious German food. Make friends with the bardame. Be merry.

Haha. German Angst! You're right. I'll see what I can sort out to go there. Really tempted. It's essentially the last chance to grab a BITE (tour) and I certainly would always bite my ass if I didn't try to go there because of a "mimimi, too far away" douch attitude :D.

Oh well, can't win them all. Plus, already going to Dockville with mates.

CSAR, where are you located in Germany? We're doing a road trip for three weeks across the country. Drinks?

Enjoyed, What's your schedule? are you around London the early part of Aug? Also, if you're doing Germany, keep me in touch. Still mad I missed your show in DC.

Hard to say at this point! My girlfriend is coming over from America at some point in the summer and we haven't figured out at all what we're doing. I want to take her to some of my favourite cities in Europe though so we'll probably head out to do that after I've bored her with England for a month or so. I'll keep you posted!

My first thought when I saw a picture of the venue, was that the amphitheater looks eerily familiar to the scene in 'Apocalypse Now' when they fly in the Playboy bunnies for the troops.

Wow that's insane!

If you can wait (which i'm pretty sure you can, because i can't see this sell out THAT soon) - you can buy tickets for this from other major retailers (Eventim etc.) from 13 May.

I don't know whether they'll be even more expensive (i doubt it hah 60€ is already quiet a lot), but you could definitely save some shipping costs (eventim pretty much ALWAYS has some Kind of print out thing going)

E-Werk is to small (even though I love that location). They've played the palladium before and I think it is a very good location for them - not too big, not to small. But right now there are no concerts in that venue because of a stupid city government

F#cking Hell! Eventim also charges € 16,- for shipping. But I bought a ticket thru ticketmaster.de. The venue looks so cool, I know people who've been there voor the RockHard festival and they say it's a very intimate place with very good sight on the stage no matter where you are standing.
Hopefully I can get half way so I can oversee the visuals in the best way.

I'm going solo cause of the price so a forum meet up would be cool.
(to avoid any dissapointments I'm not a 20 year old girl (which some forummers thought I was in earlier meet ups) but a 38 young man, fan since 1996) :)

I reckon he meant in his real mailbox, dispatched. So, this is going to be a nice little forum gathering, aye? I'll be there too! It's the most expensive Chems show I've ever been too. As a matter of fact, it's the most expensive concert I've ever been to.

And yes, I'm totally disappointed and will be hiding from you, Joslyn, for your not being a woman. Not even a 38 woman. :P

(1) Yes
(2) That would be Rammstein for me(67,70€). Even Eric Clapton only want's 82DM (about 41€) from my wallet. But i've taken a look at my old Bizarre Festival 2002 ticket where i saw the Brothers for the first time (and that was the end of my musical career in rock music  ;D ;D ;D ), and it says 89€ (5 days of camping and three days of glorious live music) - so 59€ for a single concert is a fucking announcement.

Got my Tickets a while ago as well and talked some friends into going as well hah

I would still like to know how this booking happened in the first place... I mean it seems like this is their only solo/not-Festival show up to this point and the venue is what i would call... "unusual". The fact that their only solo-show of this tour takes place in Gelsenkirchen seems so odd haha (Columbiahalle Berlin or some other major german city would make so much more sense)

Looking at the Facebook event, which only has about 300 subscribers, i'm starting to think this wasn't the wisest booking choice ever made.

ANYWAY: It's The Brothers, It's a solo-show, It's near me, I'm hyped!

Well that's the thing, it's the booker's job to make sure they make money on the show, isn't it? Basically, The Chemical Brothers will play any show if they're sure to get their money and it fits with their schedule and vibe. Anything after that is the venue and bookers making up that cost.

You're going to have a great time ChemicalBob. Prepare for the Reel!

 :)  Ooh yeah. .  I've  got  myself  a  ticket   :)  I think this will be a great show   :)

The last decent Chemical Brothers concert i went to was 2007 Birmingham NIA (uk),  I did see them at Creamfields 2011 but it had rained so heavily all day. .  it killed the vibe a bit , and I didn't think the sound quality was great.

Proper  excited  to  be  seeing  them  at  this  Amphitheatre  venue.

I hope the sun will have set at the time they're going to be onstage. My last experience dates back to 2008 where they played that nice venue in Berlin, the Citadel in Spandau. While the venue was really gorgeous, it was kind of weird to see them playing in a rather natural ambient light setting as dawn took a while to break that summer night. I need it dark so the visuals can really pop and create that special atmosphere which their sets inhere.

This looks like it's going to be fun with quite some forumites possibly meeting up!

According to the venue, the show starts at 8 p.m.
According to Astronomy, on Sep. 9th, the sun sets at 7:59 p.m. (http://www.timeanddate.com/sun/germany/gelsenkirchen?month=9&year=2016)
So, even assuming there is no support and they start right on time, we should be fine.

This gig is a little less than a month away. According to the Amfitheater Facebook the capacity is around 6000 people. And yet it hasn't sold out. This could be the most intimate open air gig non festival the Brothers played in years if not ever.
No start time of the gig is known neither is the opening act. I expect a dj not a live act. James Holroyd?

Due  to  the  added  UK  dates  i've  pulled  out  of  this  one  and  sold  my  ticket.  Going  to  see  them  at  Blackpool  and  London  instead  (these  gigs  are  2  days  apart  ,  well  ,  i've  gotta  get  my  fill  of  The  Chems ,  haven't  seen  them  live  for  years  and  these  indoor  shows  are  too  tempting  to  miss).

The  Chemical  Brothers  have  been  on  full  tilt  this  year  with  the  live  shows  ,  wonder  if  it's  back  to  the  lab  for  them  next  year  to  work  on  new  material  ,  let's  hope  so  :)

That's a pitty that you decided to ditch this one. Hope you'll enjoy the London shows!

Well, I for one decided to make me my own fanboy shirt, a thing I wanted to do for quite some time and thought now would be perfect timing. I also thought, a little forum promo would be cool, so I came up with this one (I'm not the guy in the pic).

So anyways, you'll be able to spot me in case we have trouble catching each other up other at the venue. How do we do this anyway? I'm not a whatsapp user or things like that, rather an oldschool "I call or text you" kind of guy.

Btw, the shop owner was fun too. He wore a Moog shirt when I picked my one up at the store today. I asked him whether he was into synths at all or if it was just a fashion choice. He replied "of course" he is a huge synths fan and owned quite some gear. Among those he's got 3 (in words three) original TB303, an octave plateau and an MS20!! My jaw literally dropped on the counter. Unfortunately, he was a little "uncommunicative" and didn't really react to my "Oh I'd love to touch one of those" comment. But when I asked him whether he had a website or such a thing, he gave me a CD that he recorded 2 years ago for free. I had to wait for my sister to finish a meeting to pick her up, so I had quite some time to listen to it in the car. It was acutally quite nice. The owner also told me that he had lost track of the Chems when they became "poppy" or "discoey" but must be great live. So, I'll probably need to send him the apple live set to restore faith in him :)

I use Telegram and Hangouts, but most likely I won't use mobile internet in Germany.
Maybe just meet up at 19:00 at the entrance?

If you spot me say hi, I'll be wearing a dark blue shirt with this print:

I think meeting up at the entrance is a good idea. Now that roaming charges are down, we could get in touch by phone too, just in case we walk past each other or get lost in the crowd.
I hope traffic won't be bad on the autobahn as it is Friday and everyone tries to get home. Man, it is exciting to see them once again after 8 years. Looking forward to meeting you all.

Hello world!

The meet-up was a bit smaller than the list above but still gorgeous => Toxic, Joslyn, Stefan, Csar and me. And everyone brought some other people with them. There is a group picture but i dunno who has it on the phone.

Setlist was awesome, but they've could have been on stage a bit longer. They went on stage at 09:15 or 09:20 and left at 11:00. The location was awesome, never had such a good view before, and it was loud as fuck.
From the setlist, no suprises if you had followed the threads from the others show. Someone wrote somewhere that they've played K+D+B but this was not the case yesterday. They mashed up C.H.E.M.I.C.A.L. with Siren & Leave Home so there aren't any news of what to expect from the studio version of chemical. When they played In Glint they had this large "parabolic antenna" (or how to describe it) hoovering above their heads which was quiet impressive. And robots. And this ultra fucking loud tuba guy. And sadly no Snow/Surface and no Reel  :(

Csar recorded the whole show (audio only) so stay tuned for more happy days.

Bummer that they didn't flavor up the setlist a bit. Are you sure they went on for ~1 hour and 45 mins? Don't they usually get the typical set done in an 1 hour and 30 mins? Anything over would have me assume that you would get some sort of encore.

The crowd looked pretty amped from the short clips I have seen. Would have loved to be a part of this.

Happy all of you, for the most part, met up.

It was a great night. Met some great people and had a great time. Had a fun drive with Toxic + GF and met Stefan, Pumisher and Csar over there (the latter being a bit illegal  ;) ). Great guys, Pumisher enjoying himself low key behind us while Stefan was dancing his ass off next to me. Toxic and myself seemed to have crossed paths more than a couple of times over the last 20 years without knowing each other. The venue was awesome. The Amfitheater is set in a park so we could chill in the sun before the gates opened. Eventually in the venue Holly was spinning the tunes and building the atmosphere. With the Setting Sun (pun intended) we would see boats floating by in a green tree filled backdrop. Cue Tom & Ed.
Last show I've seen was Werchter last year. They changed the set a bit with some tacks dropped (sad not to hear Snow/Surface) and tracks added (hurray for In Glint in a awesome mix). It was also the first I've seen lights being re-arranged on stage, added or removed during the show. This could also been done of the fact is was a small stage. And really weird that the show wasn't sold out with part of the left and right side of the stand closed which reduced a quarter of the capacity.
The performance was great. With the return of Ed you can hear the sounds he adds to the show. With Adam on stage it sounded more messy (Sorry Adam, love the visuals though ;D). And Ed was so happy coming to the front of the stage more often than I've seen him do, raising his hands and aplauding the crowd. Awesome to have Ed back (never leave again  :()
The only but major downside was no encore. The being a Chems only show there should have been an encore. I was really hoping to hear Reflexion and TSSU but any other track would have sufficed. This probably due to a curfew. Than again the started the show at 21:15 in stead of 21:00 an the show ended at 22:50. So that 1hr35 where (almost) 2hrs should have been possible.
so for the setlist, I'm doing this out of memory so I will have some things mixed up:

Heeey! First of all sorry that I didn't participate in the meetup - things went a bit complicated with my friends because a few of them couldn't go last minute... But I made it there!

The Show was amazing- and actually a lot better compared to their gig at SonneMondSterne Festival last year (Damn these aoki fans who just went to the bros for a good spot! Haha)

Sadly they couldn't play the reel because of Loudness restrictions (they basically have to stop playing at 23:00 at that venue), but I was pretty wasted after block rocking beats anyways :D

Hey all, just made it home safe and sound (my flight arrived on late afternoon in Vienna but I went directly from the airport to a birthday party)

It was amazing! Yes, I was a bit dissapointed that they didn't play an encore and the setlist was the same as on the Zürich Open Air which I visited just two weeks ago, so no major suprises for me there. However this was not setback for me. The venue is absolutely fantastic, both in atmosphere and especially in acoustics! This was also the first Chems show where I wasn't more or less in front of the stage, as we watched it from the first to steps of the tiers. It was less frantic (I've had my fair share of this in Zürich) but better to appreciate the visuals! Also there was nobody blocking our view (this is how concerts must feel for people who are 2 meters tall).
And of course the Forum meetup was lovely! It was great to meet all of you in person and enjoy a Chems gig with people who share appreciation and enthusiasm for this music  :)
I hope that there will be more meetups in the future!

I took some pics of the venue and during the show, you can see them here:

For the "In Dust We Trust" question: That's one of the moments i'm not 100% sure, but thats mostly because there was so many things going on with the set that where new to me in real "live" and not only the readings here and videos on youtube (remember, the last time i've seen them live was at the WATN-tour). But we can wait for Csar, he can confirm everything because he recorded everything.

Oh f.. yeah, this was a blast! Met the kindest and funniest people there!! Hopefully I'm able to put together a little review soon. The chemistry was there in every respect!

Just real quick, the audio of the bootleg is not that bad at all. My friend, who brought the recorder send me a quick low-qual mp3 render of it and will pass me the hi-re file maybe today (if he's able to because he attended a wedding yesterday). I need to do some adjustments to the EQ, though, as the raw material is a little 'mushy'.
Unfortunately (at least I can't hear it), there was no In Dust We Trust. EML came on right after Tempt./SG without any real break and was followed by the Setting Sun mashup. I didn't spot any sample of it either throughout (but haven't listened to the whole thing yet).

Here are three pics of us after the concert. Maybe you can see some glint. From right to left in the first one: Toxic's girlfriend who's name I forgot (stupid me, felt too awkward asking her again after we talked a lot!), Toxic, Stefan, Joslyn (a big thank you for the drinks you treated us to!!!)  and me. In the second and third one we had some uninvited guests who bombed the photo :D. The guy in the adidas jacket was a weird dude, trying to tell us drunkenly a bad joke about lady parts ??? Thank goodness he didn't finish (props to his friend who dragged him away eventually :) )
Sadly, Pumisher and his friend left earlier to hit the road back home and I totally forgot then to ask for the group photo because we were still chatting at the trailer beer bar. Couldn't catch up with you much either, Pumisher, which was really unfortunate. Would have loved to talk with you. But this won't hopefully be the last meet up.

Stefan, you took some awesome pictures of the venue! That photo from underneath the bridge is absolutely gorgeous! And yes, apparently "Austria" did have fun! :D

Bob, thanks for clearing that up! I didn't know they weren't allowed to play past 11 pm. Bummer, I could imagine they would have loved to do an encore. Seems like I was mildly disappointed about the wrongs lads :)

That venue looks small but huge from a crowd view (looks like Red Rocks) I like those type of crowds where you got a good look of the stage but not crowded. Reminds me off my gig at the Hollywood Bowl! Great pics to share too!

I can only imagine a setting sun near a river that sits next to a park as dream backdrop for a show. I was just visualizing from your point of view and how awesome it would be to be at that particular show with all of you. Encores are scarce these days!

Alright, so here's the recording of the Gelsenkirchen show. I still haven't gotten the wav file (which I'm pretty sure was 24 bit at 48kHz), though, so it's still "lower-res". But perhaps it won't get any better regarding the source material. As soon as I get the wav, I'll reupload it. If anyone is interested I can send you the source mp3 too (looking at you Enjoyed, Benji, WhiteNoise, Mippio!!). Maybe you can get more out of it since I only own shitty "equipment" like my PC "Brüllwürfel" (=bawling speaker boxes/"dices") and did the EQing through my average headphones.

I apologize for the slight panning that goes on throughout the show because I couldn't resist dancing. There's also a few instances of chatting or remarks from me and friends, so please bear with me. Thanks, toxic, for holding the device every once in a while ;)

Enjoy!

I wasn't at that particular gig but...
Housemaster Boys' House Nation - an old rave/house track. The repeated line of "hou hou hou House Nation" was overlaid on to part of Acid Children. They did this at a bunch of gigs around that time. Mentioned on the forum here. (https://forum.thechembase.com/index.php/topic,63.msg2120.html#msg2120)

King Of The Beats is of course the track that the Siren/Klaxon noise is sampled from for Song To The Siren. I suspect whoever posted that to Setlist FM may have interpreted the opening siren sample as being King Of The Beats. Which it kind of is.

PS I miss the flashing blue lights/English coppers visuals they used to use for live STTS. Bring em back!

They've used the House Nation sample during Believe too right? I remember hearing in 2018 at that point
