Title: Requests, Bug Reports, How-To's, etc.
Post by: whirlygirl on Jul 03, 2015, 16:06
Hi Everyone! Debated on which subforum to put this in, so I'm putting it here.

Please report bugs/glitches, questions about how to do this-and-that, and things related to forum functionality here. That way we can try to keep things like this contained so info on what needs a'fixin can be found easily (and other people can chime in if they are having the same issue). :)

Edit
How to:

...embed video/audio: Just paste the link into your post.
...embed Tweets: Just paste the link into your post.

Krisper has successfully fixed the Soundcloud embedding issue. It's now possible to simply insert the soundcloud link into your posts to automatically embed them like other formats.

Good call. The word is out to the admins. Not sure if we can disable the one smilie, or if we'd have to disable all and replace with a  different set of smilies - we shall see.

UPDATE: smilie disabled!

Afraid not, Mob1. We have a carbon copy of the forum from about 2 weeks before it was closed. But importing information from the old system is nye on impossible. We're all starting fresh again :)

Currently making some requested updates in response to the forum now being official, and while I have the hood up, could someone collect a list of requested bug fixes/changes? They are a bit scattered...

I know WN mentioned more work being needed on the site, but I want the whole team to know how smooth and awesome this transition has been. The new forum looks great, and it might just be in my head, but it seems like my mobile experience is better than it was on the original site.

So, thank you ChemBase Team! You really got it right and conversations about BITE have been fluid out of the gate.

Here's an idea, for join dates. We could have the name of the album released near the join date or a "badge" with album picture or something along those lines.
For example  for the veterans since 02 the can have the come with us name or badge, the ones who joined around the release of push the button, and the like..
Waddya all think?

Unfortunately there's no search function with the old forum. It's basically a static copy of the forum, not really active data that's pulling from an active database.

If you want to search something you'll have to dig through all that info...

^ We're going to do more with the static copy in the future, but for now it's just like Whirly said.

It's possible the archive could be indexible via Google.

Thanks much! It was at times pretty bumpy for us, but I know we (especially I) are really glad it went so smoothly for you! More work always needs to be done in my eyes... a small downside to having a constantly editable project. But it's generally minor, devil in the details work.

Mobile functionality was one of my biggest priorities for the design, hoped to outdo that drab grey version we had before, especially with mobile being far more prevalent than it was 5 years ago. Chuffed to hear you comment on how well it works!

I like this. Us forum regulars are strangely content with having our high scores erased, but I'd love to instate a system like this. The plus to running the forum ourselves is being able to update it continuously, so we'll discuss adding something like this to the mix. Perhaps not just forum join date, but the year/era you actually jumped on board the Chems train, we'd have some proper Dust heads being recognized in here.

I've logged a lot more time on mobile since my original post, and yes, this absolutely is a great improvement. Again, great job to everyone involved (especially to you since this was your focus). Mobile IS a big deal for many of us, and  I know I am posting a lot more than I used to.

I've been 'satur8' for a long time now, and I was a lurker and occasional commenter all the way back when  the forum was this weird pop-up window looking thing that didn't load well. (Anyone remember what era that was: Surrender???) Anyway, I really feel this is the most fluid version yet, and you guys get the credit. The big jump worked out well.

I think the pop up window era was in the run up to CMU. I remember thinking I'd found the wrong website when I was trying to hunt down Star Guitar. The site then was just loads of beautiful textured backgrounds with essentially pop up windows with all the info in.

Thank you for the vote of confidence! :) WhiteNoise and Explud spent many hours taking care of so much of the technical aspects to building a forum from the ground up. I love how easy it is to use the forum on a mobile. I've been using mobile devices since We Are The Night and it was quite painful getting a page to load. And forget about deleting spam. It was near impossible. The last forum we had worked better on mobile but was not compatible on my tablet (my iPad). At least not using safari. I would have gone completely blind with the tiny font if I didn't have a browser emulation app that allowed me to view as if I were using Mozilla. Still a pain in the neck as far as getting all the functions to work. Mobile functionality is huge for me, between my phone and tablet I very rarely use a PC unless it's work related or I'm uploading photos from my camera to Dropbox or using Photoshop.

Yep! During Surrender it was still the good old mailing list :) The forum's first incarnation was just before Come With Us came out. All the people including myself that got their hands on a leaked copy came to the forum and let er rip, hahaha. I recall anyone could log in as a guest, and the site said if Tom and Ed logged in it would be posted in red ink. I don't think that ever happened! From what I remember the forum wasn't a traditional forum like this one,  but more like a tree (sort of like the reddit format)

Anyway I wish there were some screen shots of the very first forum. I did find this, though.

Copy the whole link and paste. I've been lost in the historic chemical rabbit hole for like three hours now. Found a Q and A from June 1999 confirming Stefan is hardcore, ha!

Quote

Stefan Koopmanschap: Hi, I am one of the listees of the chemical brothers mailinglist. We are organising a party for the listees. Wanna come too? Maybe perform some tracks? Or DJ some?
Tom: What date is it? Sounds a good do. Where are you going to hold it - we're pretty busy over the next few months, but I hope it all goes well.

Ed: Nice one Stefan. You are one of the hardcore.

The Come With Us version isn't working for me because I have... too new a version of flash? I need to see those backgrounds again.

EDIT: It was early in the morning and I wasn't trying very hard. I got it working now.

I also tried to navigate to the pdf discography and ended up onthis fun thang (http://www.thechemicalbrothers.com/disco/txt/chems_disco.pdf).

I didn't realize I was here near the start. I don't remember my old username, but I only posted a few times and became a long-time lurker. It seemed like all of you already had known each other for forever.

PM question.

I sent out a few messages today and recently but they do not show up in my sent box. Is this functionality working, and if so, can someone contact me and let me know if my traffic is reaching it's targets? Thank you!

EDIT: The messages get out, they just don't show up in my sent items. Thanks for looking into it if possible. I'll also check profile settings to make sure I'm not a dummy.

EDIT 2: I AM the dummy. I found the option to save copies of sent messages. It's not set by default. DUH! (Thanks anyway)

I looked for that when we were designing the forum but I couldn't find any plugins for chat that I didn't hate (or that worked). IRC would be cool!

I've just noticed that the img-tag resizes pics to the width of the forum posts. This makes sense for pics that would be larger, but it also stretches pics which are smaller.

I only noticed the chat link at the top of the site a few days ago, and I was kinda curious until I entered and disovered it was completely empty. I don't think it's a problem if it isn't used very often, but I think there needs to be some kind of schedule or notice of when it is and isn't in use, so it's not just up to people to check it randomly every now and then. I don't know how easy this would be to impliment, but something as simple as a counter next to the link at the top of the site that displays how many people are currently in chat would make a fair difference, I think.

Not heard of anything like this before.

What browser are you using? And do you have any add-ons or plug-ins that could be stopping scripts? Adblock for example?
I'm running Adblock on Chrome and things are fine but it could be worth trying to disable your add-ons and seeing if anything works.

ALSO. There's a 'Requests, Bug Reports, How-To's, etc.' topic in the Questions section which is where this kinda stuff should go. Just for future reference. We're more likely to see it there and get it sorted with other issues people might be having.

Below the attachment box there's a tiny reminder
Allowed file types: doc, gif, jpg, pdf, png, txt, zip
Restrictions: 4 per post, maximum total size 10240KB, maximum individual size 1024KB

Your pics' size should not be larger than 1 MB and are limited to 4 attachments in total. Maybe that's the reason for it not working for you?
Videos are not enabled in the attachment section. May be Explud could chime in if I'm mistaken on the vids part.

Edit: You can only attach files coming from your own machine. No links.

Well, your first question can only be answered by themselves, I believe.
For the rest, maybe a couple of interviews could be worth a read:

I'm sorry, Brandon, but I don't really understand your concerns. My words as a fan are certainly not more legit than those coming from the Brothers themselves. This is a fans' forum.
Knowing one thing or two about citation, websites are as quotable as any other source, especially articles from newspapers like the Guardian's for instance. In these articles you'll find some good answers to your queries based on the best source you can get: the Chemicals Brothers.

It's been there since configuration. It might cause problems if a user starts a topic by mistake and wants to delete it, but I will edit those permissions.

Everytime i'm in the "post reply"-window and click the 'insert hyperlink'-button my browser freezes/crashes and i can only force shutdown it

Firefox 45 (happened in previous versions too), OSX 10.6.8

Not happening with the same browser under Windows 10 or with Edge under Win10
Title: Re: Requests, Bug Reports, How-To's, etc.
Post by: WhiteNoise on Mar 11, 2016, 18:30
That may have to do with the forum opening up a dialog window for inserting hyperlinks. You might have something that blocks those dialog boxes from opening that the forum code doesn't like/doesn't realize. When a dialog box is open, you can't interact with anything on the page, but if you can't see the dialog box it might look like the page is frozen. You may have seen spam sites use them to open up a dialog box before you "go back", and forcing you to hit OK or something before being able to leave. I'll poke around and see if I can fix that on my side.

For the record, it's a to-do to go through the forum code and remove/replace most instances of dialog boxes. They're useful but a bit of a nuisance.

Hey brothers!

I am a Marketing Master student from Italy and am about to finish my studies.

I have been following the chemical brothers for long and literally fell in love with the new album.
My question is: is there a way to become part of the supporting team for live concerts?
I would love to help someway :)

Cheers

Back on the previous incarnation of the forum, using Firefox meant I couldn't play embedded Soundclouds, although I could click on the link to take me to the Soundcloud page.
That problem disappeared with the new forum, which was great. But in the past week I've realised that all the soundcloud embeds are unplayable for me. They look as though the Soundcloud has expired/disappeared. But they work ok on Google Chrome and Internet Explorer.

I've had a look at settings but can't see anything obvious. Anyone else suffer from this?
And...no I haven't changed anything recently.

It may be due to Soundcloud continuing to use Flash in certain situations, as web browsers continue phasing it out through the year, playing Soundcloud can sometimes lead to nothing working due to Flash no longer being supported.

That's kind of awesome.

The problem is that you're using McAfee, which according to John McAfee, "is one of the worst products on the f**king planet."

I can see what I can do to get us off that list, but I imagine there's no easy process of telling their database that our site is OK, and their detection software would probably require us to do really unnecessary changes to our site for them to be OK with it, and it's really not worth it.

Privacy and resource usage are the main factors.

Incognito mode in Chrome is okay for privacy but inconvenient if you are using other Google based items, such as gmail of google Docs. That said, it still runs heavier than Firefox, which is easily customizable and can offer better security in addition to privacy.

Chrome is certainly easiest if you want your browser retaining your credit card info and such.

I use Chrome at work, IE at work for necessary intranet work, Firefox at home, and a mix of Dolphin and Safari on my mobile. People say they like Opera but it's just not for me.

My point is, there is no rule that one can't utilize different browsers for different needs. That is, as long as IE is always your last choice.  8)

Yes, I've been a longtime user of firefox. In my opinion it's a great and simple browser that, like satur8 pointed out, offers some good add-ons for privacey and ad-blocking. I use a combination of 3 add-ons:

- Ghostery for general tracker blocking
- AdBlockPlus for adblocking and
- NoScript (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NoScript) for general java-script blocking.

The latter needs a little tweaking/ customization. That means, you would need to go through a list of scripts each site is trying to run. You can then allow or deny them operating in your browser simply by clicking each script in a scroll-over or conext-menu. You would have to do this just one time for each (new) website, but often times these are just a 2-3 scripts that are necessary to run a site. In that mentioned scoll-over menu you then see scripts you've blocked. You can also block them temporarily or permanently. It can be a little weird or even tedious for the first time but once you get the hang of it, it becomes a really good tool. And once all is set up to your needs, you won't be bothered with useless scripts, ads and trackers anylonger that potentially slow down your browser.

As for firefox' speed performance, I also sometimes switch on "pipelining" in my "about:config" menu to make it a tad faster. You can read about it here (look under Firefox Pipelining): http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/speed-up-mozilla-firefox/

Also, I let firefox automatically delete almost all stuff used during a session (cookies, history, cache etc.) after closing my browser.

Btw, I have no problem opening your site above or Guardian's homepage and I only have a rather slow 6000kbit/s connection.

On my PC i'm using Edge, but i'm not very satisfied with it, need to find an alternative - and that is not Chrome...
On my MBP it's Firefox i'm using, was fast at the begining, but now after a couple of years i think i've broke something in the user-profile and now it's slow as fuck (but i'm not in the mood of setting up a new profile so i have to deal with it).
On my Surface the browser of my choice is Opera, works best with touch-gestures imo.
Phone is IE Mobile because of no alternative...

EDIT: You have to go to the thread, click 'Go Down', then click to go back to the main topic (The Social, Live, whatever) and then click Forum 2.0.

Click on "reply" instead of "quick reply" to open the editor. Then use the button below the B (for bold) which is to the left of that Earth and envelope symbol (hovering over with your mouse it says "insert image"). Then place your link URL between the brackets.

Or type the following: [img]your image URL [/ img] without the space after the backslash.

It's your fault :D

The date of a quoted post is saved in the quote header, as a numerical timestamp. It's the bit at the end:

[quote author=Csar link=topic=1137.msg13612#msg13612 date=1529234254]

Those digits after date= convert to a real day & time, by counting seconds that have passed since the Unix epoch, which is 1 January 1970. So 1529234254 seconds + 1 January 1970 = the actual time of Csar's post.

But you accidentally deleted the last digit when you were making your post. So 152923425 seconds + 1 January 1970 = 6 November 1974!

Well, soundcloud changed API and embedding work only if you post links from "Emded" option on SC.

like this:

https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/473475024
Title: Re: Requests, Bug Reports, How-To's, etc.
Post by: Wolkenkrabber on Aug 29, 2018, 14:44
So in the case of this soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/user-720498147/cellbydate), I hit Share, then I hit Embed, that gives me this code:

Quote
<iframe width="100%" height="300" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" allow="autoplay" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/485966166&color=%23ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true"></iframe>
I then delete everything before "https://w.soundcloud", and also delete everything after "...tracks/485966166", so it looks like this:

Quote
https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/485966166
Is that it? And I don't use any of the insert buttons on the forum I presume. So I get this:

https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/485966166

Which doesn't look embedded. What did I do wrong?

EDIT. Do I also delete "%3A" from the middle of that? and add a ":" ?

https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/485966166

Oh, apparently yes.

that's a really cool idea, board specific themes in general

I don't know of an easy way to do it in code but I'll look into it!

Ok, admitedly this is a question about using Youtube rather than the forum, but someone might know.
Y'know when you click "share" on a YT video and then you want to tick the time stamp so that you're sharing from a particular point in the video. Have they got rid of that option?
It looks like the timestamp is still there in the embed option but that won't work on a forum.

So let's say I want to link this track to start at 1.27, for example. How do I do that now?

Play the video til you get to the time you want it to start, then right click on the video and there will be an option to "Copy video URL at current time" and there ya go

We added a verification question to registration to cut back on spam posts here, but I've just checked and - sorry - the question seems to have glitched out. It's there but it's just a textbox with no prompt.

Looking into fixing it, but I've temporarily disabled it. He should be able to sign up now.

Hi
It's been a long time since I wrote something here on forum as I got Banned
To be totally honest... I don't know why as I wasn't in conflict with anyone or said something wrong
But I remember that NEOREV wrote something about his pal who couldn't register to the forum so I guess that it may be just a mistake ;-; I also had problem with registering the new acc as I was instantly banned so It's a big relief for me now
Is there any chance to unban my old account?
Can someone help me?

Ha, I was just wondering because I recognized your name in the newest members list and thought to myself, "wasn't he already registerd?"
I'm deeply sorry, the culprit most certainly was I! I've been aggressively deleting spam accounts for quite some time and your email domain possibly was suspicous to me (most certainly in association with a spam account and not you). Usually I do investigate domains and other variables before banning any accounts but I may have been sloppy that day. My apologies for your inconveniences!

Haven't read Stefan's post or even opened the M:R thread but it doesn't show the orange dot. If i open the M:R thread it shows the orange "new post" on the relevant topic.

No idea if it's the same in the No Geography, Live or Questions threads - The Social works as it should.

Lately when I log in, I have to refresh my page to have the forum recognize my credentials. It's done this in both Chrome and Firefox from two different endpoints.

It's not big deal at all and may only be a local issue for me, but I'm reporting in case there was a change. This has been the case for me for about 2 weeks after cache clears and logouts. I have no issue if I stay logged in, but it happens if I log out or clear cache.TY

I had been having this issue for months before I discovered a "fix" in my case a couple of days ago. I use Firefox:

- type in 'about:config' in your address bar
- type in 'browser.cache.check_doc_frequency' in the search bar
- change value from 3 to 1.

I read that this changes how often FF refreshes the site's cache.
- 0: with each opening of FF
- 1: with each site access
- 2: never refreshing cache
-3: automatic

It could cause your browser to take a while longer to load sites but from my experience this is rather negligible.

My guess is Mozilla messed around with that algorithm in their last updates and it's not really refreshing at all when set to 3. This drove me nuts for a while because everytime I forgot to refresh a page, especially here on the forum, I occasionally would miss words in my edited posts because they weren't saved yet.

Success, thank you! I appreciate the quick answer to my extremely vexing inconvenience. LOL

I'm only telling you this because you deserve the laugh. I copied 'about:config' into the address bar and got search results. It took 0.5 seconds to realize I'm a dumbass and copied the punctuation marks. Whoopsie!

I thought it also happened on Chrome on my VDI work computer, but now it makes sense that I was mistaken and more likely toggling back and forth through Citrix. I don't have Firefox on that image.

Is there a way in the search function that we can search a term by specific topic.

Ex. In the search function I want to look up Fuji rock in the past live footage (94-05) topic. I know there is the contain to specific board search, but can we go one further step down for those bigger threads. Sometimes you just don't want to search manually through 10+ pages for a specific post.

Explud may be able to tell you exactly what the reason is, but I'd suspect the server was a just bit slow or traffic related limits might be at play.

Sorry @rynostar, my apologies, your posts totally slipped past me. I need to ask the SMF team whether there's a way or plan to implement such a feature in a future release. I know from other forums that use a different platform that you can search topics individually (which would be super handy, I agree). But looking at our search menu it doesn't seem to cover that yet, unfortunately.

There are no restrictions on the part of the data center and its channels.
There are also no problems with the server load.
The problems are somewhere either in the middle of the connection, or closer to the user endpoint (in the USA).

The only complaint i have with speed on the forum is with loading times of embedded media (youtube, twitter x, instagram...). Thats why it sometimes takes time to scroll down automatically if you click on "go to last post", because it only scrolls down if anything is loaded completely. You can do it manually, yes, but jump to last post is more comfortable.

Ha. I came across an SMF topic today where the theme discussed there did in fact have that function. Then it got me thinking as to why ours doesn't and I inspected the standard SMF forum. And voilá, it's got it, too!
It turns out that the theme that we used as the basis apparently has removed that for whatever reason. I'm working on a solution to bring it back.

@rynostar: I've gotten it back for the current theme and the standard one. You'll find the search box at the bottom of the topic index and topics themselves.
Let me know if you come across bugs and stuff!

Still slow to load on forum homepage! The bg image takes forever to load. Once it's finished, I can then navigate the site!  Already tried 3 browsers on my phone with the same result.

2 minutes just to click on a topic!

I remember around the time of No Geography's release, the background wallpaper (a photo of T&E, I think) took a while to load and it would default to a powder blue colour associated with that album until the wallpaper loaded.
But at the moment? Honestly it is super fast. I really mean it. The wallpaper, the threads, everything. It's never been as responsive as this for me. So I'm inclined to "Believe" or agree with Explud where he says there are no problems with the server load.
The forum has honestly never been better for me.

Omg, @inchemwetrust, that shouldn't happen at all. The images are usually rather small in file size. Could you please clear your browser cache and/or do a so-called hard-refresh (ctrl/cmd + f5 on your keyboard, or press and hold the re-fresh arrow of your mobile browser).
I also re-activated the option to minimize CSS (style) and javascripts, let's see if that has a positive effect.

Btw, what OS do you use? Do you experience this on both mobile and laptop/pc?

I checked with an online performance tool and it doesn't show something out of the ordinary so far.
performance.png

Also, could please try another Theme from Look & Layout, perhaps the standard Chembase 2.0 one, or the Reel one which doesn't feature the timer box, and report back if there's any difference in performance for you?

There was one 1.5 mb JPEG image, but I converted it to WebP and it became 200-300 kb.
So now everything is working extremely fast. Could be even faster by milliseconds if we remove the FancyBox with the news, but I think there is no need to do that. ;D

Not sure if this is a bug or I maybe accidentially activated a feature of some kind, but for some reason the font in the "Live 2024"-thread (https://forum.thechembase.com/index.php/topic,3312) shows up orange for me. All other threads I've checked show the normal black font. I tested this on two laptops, one with Win10 and one with Win11, and a smartphone with Android14,  all running the latest Firefox (121.0)
Force reload/clearing the cache didn't change anything.
