Title: Glastonbury 2022 => 2023
Post by: Wolkenkrabber on Jun 17, 2022, 23:00
Following on from Shotglass 75's post in the Live Dates thread where he pointed out a retweet ( https://twitter.com/glastobation/status/1537172472369397762 ) by the @Chembros twitter, ITV.com (who funnily enough don't show any Glasto) ran this little article (https://www.itv.com/news/westcountry/2022-06-17/chemical-brothers-rumoured-for-secret-set-at-glastonbury-festival).
Tom's wife Ness also re-tweeted that same tweet incidentally.

And here's the set times for the Arcadia stage for Friday (they even say: "Here we go"):

https://twitter.com/A_rcadia/status/1537374425435316224

It's worth noting that everyone else on that list is doing DJ sets. So I'm guessing this will be a DJ set for the Chems too. If they were playing live, it would probably be on The Other Stage or The Pyramid stage.

A DJ set at Glasto would be kinda cool - perhaps another opportiunity to play some new tracks. However we may be relying on social media footage rather than professional BBC footage.

Since Smart TV became a thing, the BBC has covered the 6 largest stages at Glasto. You can literally select a stage and just watch everything on that stage via BBC iPlayer, live. No presenters, no interruptions. It's so much better than the old days when BBC2 would cover almost the whole festival, so they would jump around between stages/acts, and you never knew how much you were going to see of your favourite artist.

However the Arcadia stage isn't one of those 6 main stages. In fact the whole dance village at Glastonbury gets virtually no TV coverage. Occasionally the catch-up show on BBC2 might show five minutes of Fatboy Slim playing  Rockerfeller Skank. But overall it seems they don't think the DJ/Dance Tent stuff works for TV so they don't really cover it...

that nme article is scrounging.

hey this reminds me. I attended Glastonbury once, in 2010. there were ridiculous rumours surrounding secret sets that year. several turned out to be true.

well we caught word that the Chemical Brothers would be playing a DJ set at some bar on Sunday at midnight. I think it was Stonebridge, though my memory is hazy. we headed over there after Orbital. they had to stop letting people in the tent shortly after we got there because it got so crowded. eventually someone came on the PA to announce the Chemical Brothers were not going to be playing. I never figured out who was playing (it was all listed as "very special guests") but we were having a blast regardless. fun times.

ok, back to 2020.

They ever DJ at Glastonbury before?

I have to imagine there is a new EBW that they want to debut to mark the occasion. You don't come as a late TBA secret and not deliver something special.

And yes, more importantly, who's gonna record this?

But exceptions can be made right? But what if there's some lackluster performances going on the other stages, can't they shoot over to the 'spider'

Bbc reporter with cameraman:
'yet (insert singer or band) puts on a decent display of music tonight at the pyramid and...

(Cameraman does 180 and aims camera to Ed cueing a track)

Bbc reporter: WAIT...IS THAT A NEW EBW? ARE YOU GETTING THIS?

Tom has Covid, you guys :( the show tonight has sadly been cancelled. Check their socials.

Praying for a quick and gentle recovery and hoping our Tom is right as rain soon ❤️

I just found out!  :o

He's going be ok! He's gonna need at least 10 days of isolation ( not sure of exact time of iso over there) I'm not trying to say if he'll make it to the castle show, but for now he just needs rest and support from us.

Fucking Covid! Several months ago, live shows we're back on the menu for venues and arenas, and it seems things were getting back to normal, but here we are,and I am so sad that the fans won't be able see the bros for glasto!

Sometimes we let our guard down, and sometimes we forget to think that just because we got our shots we can get back to doing the normal things we used to do. Unfortunately my parents thought this too and they caught COVID around 2 weeks ago. They're fine now because they got boosted.

I hope all of you are safe when doing such things when going about your business and hanging out with friends and family. Sometimes when I feel that I've been around people too long or too close in contact, I'll go get a covid test and check. Even at work I have to tell others sometimes in the break room to space each other apart. The next thing you know I check my work email and get news from my job that we have confirmed positive cases of covid. I had 3 of them just last week alone.

I wish Tom the fastest speedy recovery possible. We miss him and will alway be in our hearts as he heals.

I've had nastier hangovers than Covid and that's as a maniac unsafe granny-killing anti-vaxxer. Hoping he's better for Sunday. This was meant to be a bit of light at the end of the tunnel after two years of "responsible" twats sucking the life out of everything that's good about being alive.

Over six million people on this planet died of a highly communicable virus significantly worse than a hangover in the last two and a half years, including my father.  Perhaps you should consider that and ask yourself "Am I the inconsiderate, callous twat?" before posting that drivel.

Not even remotely near sorry for my response.

EDIT: Also, Fuck you for posting this after Chems had to cancel shows due to Covid.  Also, Fuck you on principle.

Even I used to think, that It'll never get me, as I rarely even catch cold, or anything, but once it got me, urgh...
Dude, I literally thought, that I'd die from it, as I've never-ever before felt that bad, as I did in the last november/december period, when I literally couldn't sleep for more, than 3 days, so I've got a hella strong, receipt only sleeping pills, that literally puts you in sleep just in a matter of minutes, which still took like a hour, or two to even start working on my body, that's how bad it was, not even speaking about problems with such simple thing like eating and using the toilet, that's how bad it was.

And then people wonder why I still use to "wear muzzle like some kind of a dog", while "nobody does it anymore".

Well, maybe because I was close to passing, or ever dying out by it?

So yeah, sometimes it's better to bite your tongue before saying something, just for the sake of other people around, trust me, I know it from my own experience ;)

I just love this kind of people saying, that nobody cares about covid, not wearing a mask and then crying about the reports of another lockdowns, increase in cases and artists canceling the following gigs

Thanks y'all.  <3  It was late October of 2020, before the vaccines were available.  My dad was a huge believer in the effectiveness of vaccines but was a Republican who bought into Trump and others' minimizing of the virus so he didn't bother to social distance or consistently mask.  Listening to "The Soft Bulletin" and "We Will Always Love You" (which came out 2 months after he died) was a cathartic way of processing my grief and certainly healthier than the bottle of whiskey I was going through every two days. It just pisses me the fuck off when people continue to minimize a global pandemic that has killed so many people for the most selfish fucking reasons.

The last two years have taught me there are more caring people in the world than the selfish, but there are enough of the selfish to fuck it all up for everyone else.  Honestly, the biggest problem on our planet are people who think they're the only ones who inhabit it.

Your audacity.
The fucking sheer audacity of having all these people tell you and giving you the reason of your stupid comment and yet, your diminute brain decides to add another motherfucking comment.

Seriously man, are you this fucking stupid? The only thing that I'm getting from your comments is that either you are so full of yourself, or that you don't have any loved ones to reach for because you are an asshole. I wouldn't wish anyone to grab this disease because it is horrible, but honestly, fuck you and all of the people that even after 2 years they still think that all of this is a hoax. However, for the sake of free expression of opinion - if it's not crossing a line of course -  I've decided not to remove it, although I understand the desire to do so. But I'll be watching closely. Trolling will not be tolerated on this forum!

Please, let's all keep it civil in here and more importantly let's try to not get gaslit or triggered by some random person, it's just not worth it.

Churn was the name of a Dave Grohl band so I reckon Foos to be honest (would much rather Pulp but rumour is they might also be playing at the same time in the big tent to split the crowd as they had some crush issues last year)

Don't Think (film) is also being played just after the chems set at 1:30am in the Pilton Palais Cinema. Can't say i'll likely be there - theres so much else on but probably a good chance tom and ed are there

So you think The Churnups are Pulp?
Its just been confirmed as Foos (I wanted Pulp!) can't complain though a literal headliner playing at 6pm

Bit of a crazy night - Foos > (secret set of Blossoms and Rick Astley doing Smiths covers apparently!) > Fred Again > Chems > onwards into the night!

On the BBC page about Glasto it is said (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/4X4KYxrsBwDn3YB9tCy5yhx/how-to-catch-all-of-the-action-at-glastonbury-2023)
Quote
As in previous years, there will be live streams from the five major stages (Pyramid Stage, Other Stage, Park Stage, West Holts Stage and the John Peel Stage) for you to enjoy even more of your favourite bands and artists.
They're not mentioning Arcadia, not for iPlayer or Sounds. However, Nemone mentioned a couple of minutes ago on 6 Music that the Brothers will play at Arcadia, so maybe...

On the BBC Glasto lineup page (https://www.bbc.co.uk/events/ec59hn/artists/by/a-z) the Chems aren't mentioned. On the other hand, there are artist listed playing Woodsies Stage, which is not mentioned above. Still no word about Arcadia

When I went to Field Day aka All Points East last August (Chems were headlining live) there was a 6 Music dance "stage" (you can see it here (https://www.nme.com/news/music/6-music-stage-announces-line-up-for-all-points-east-2022-3233730), the speakers were built into the criss-cross bits) with various DJs playing house/techno etc throughout the day.
Mary Anne Hobbs (oh and Blessed Madonna too) subsequently played a number of those DJ sets on her 6 Music radio show in the week following Field Day/All Points East. There was no live broadcast of the DJ sets, so they didn't make a fuss about it before the festival.

With Glasto, if they do give us any of the Chems DJ set, it probably won't be live. So they wouldn't make a fuss about it whilst the live coverage of Glastonbury is taking place. I think we'll have to wait until after the festival to see if they recorded it and then 'packaged' it as part of 6 Music's festival coverage or Pete Tong's Friday night show.

PS The John Peel stage is no longer called The John Peel stage this year, it's called "Woodsies". Whoever wrote that BBC blurb must have done a copy/paste from last year.
PPS You must have edited in the bit about Woodsies in your post since I started typing...

PPPS! HERE (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00189bl) is a link to an hour of Bonobo at last year's Glastonbury. Presented as part of Radio 1's Essential Mix. Guess who he replaced at Arcadia last year. As you can see it's just an hour of his set*.

*this set was from the Gas Tower rather than his Arcadia set.

A few Instagram stories for Arcadia are knocking about but I can't link them here. Take a look at the Chems insta story if you can. I've heard Go and Rock Witchu. Also this mash up of Mark Broom's Let It Roll and Roy Ayers' Ubiquity Hey Uh What You Say Come On. Which we have heard before.

Great set as ever, nothing to report back really new songs / suspected ones wise

Music makes me high - 10 min lack of acid fantastic closer!

Off to enjoy the rest of my festival, i do have a BBSG video but you'll need to wait a bit longer for that!

Re the YouTube video I embedded above, we have the first 11:25 mins of the set:

0:00: Jesse Jackson "Brothers & Sisters" mixed with Your Love (Jamie Principle)
0:37 Go (EOC dub)
4:42 "Get Funky. No Bomb(?)" vocal sample. From an old breakdance/electro track I suspect.
5:16 "Do it!" and "Good Times" (Chic) vocal samples.
5:31 Take My Hands by Maxime Alexander starts to mix in underneath. Gets clearer by 6:04 when the above vocal samples ease down.
10:15 New bassline (i.e new track) mixed in followed by "woo suicide" vox at 10:47 [German speakers: is the vocal: "Woo Guten Tag, Woo suicide"?].
11:01 "Rock witchu" vocals.
11.25 Gah! It ends, just when I wanted to hear more.

Has anyone seen the Insta-Reel from Cara Delevingne watching the Chems set? She made a cool slomo, but video isn't online anymore because 24h are gone...

edit:
fun fact - Cara was in a relationship with Annie Clark aka St. Vincent at the time Annie recorded her vocals for Under Neon Lights

Hard to say. I'd listen to this a couple of times but i think the vocals are something different, not really german. Could be more like names in songs that you can hear but they're definitely not there.

I also think it must be something different, I'm 99% sure the Chems wouldn't put the combination of "Woo, Suicide", especially in such an upbeat sounding cheer, in a song.

Maybe? This sample here from a Beastie Boys track sounds similar to mee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhqyZeUlE8U&t=175s

That would mean that the Woo is a different sample.

On the Chems Insta stories they posted an insta story from Georgina Hamed. Or you can just go to Georgina's instagram account here (https://www.instagram.com/georginahamed/). You'll see in her stories (if you're quick) she has Arcadia footage of an acid sounding track with "I've got the funk" in a deep voice over the top, and also some Chemical/MC Esher rising sounds. Have we heard that track before? Anyone know it?

Well there was definitely one called Taj Mahal. We didn't know what that was. I'm not sure about Xanadu.

I feel very fortunate to have seen them play live so many times but man would I like to catch a DJ set of theirs. My first time was seeing them was at Coachella in 2009 and that was a DJ set. That set immediately made me a lifelong fan. I wish they would DJ more frequently. Seems like a rare set to catch.

Not sure if this is being talked about elsewhere but they made that surrender t shirt available for 48 hours to celebrate the dj set.

I just got back from the fest and had seen it on instagram but many would have only just seen it now and its been and gone, seems like a bit of an oversight!

Re dj set:

Song chem selection felt like last year's 3 hour ones shortened down a bit. They've really sorted the sound on the arcadia spider too and it sounds incredible!

A little review of the Glastonbury DJ set from Mixmag. It starts off like it's going to be a long, thorough review of the set but then it abruptly stops. Almost as though they watched the same 11 minute YT video we all watched.
Incidentally, I'm pretty sure Ed ended up going to Glastonbury last year with Rachel (his now pregnant partner) as I seem to recall him posting a pic on social media.
I think Ed's illness (& crew) affected the Cork gig last year, but it was Tom who had covid by the time they cancelled the Arcadia DJ date.
