I'm very excited that they're playing Coachella again.

This may likely be the first time they play where I don't see them.

There is one circumstance where I attend. And it involves the magic words: "successful resolution of litigation."

Haha, basically what I will be saying to myself after looking at my pathetic bank account and the little that remains once paying off my Christmas bills.

The takeaway I'm getting from this lineup drop, other than the fact that The Chems are coming back to fucking Coachella(!), Underworld is in the States,  at the same festival, at the same time. Are we foreseeing a potential dual tour in April,  on empty week days days between Coachella, for  East Coast and Midwest, perhaps??

I guess you have to 'duel' up to get shows in the east these days. You guys are long overdue.

The bros and Underworld would be great booking if they were doing non-festival shows..

I'm excited to see them on the lineup. I hope this helps expose them to a new generation of fans. I hope they are included on the webcast, which will give an even wider reach.

I'm tempted to go but at the same time not. the lineup overall is better than expected, particularly on the electronic music front. but that says more about how far my expectations of coachella have sunk than it does about the lineup. I think about how the crowd size has doubled since I was last there, and... yeah. maybe if I lived in driving distance and scored a cheap last minute ticket. (also I anticipate a gut-wrenching conflict between Gorillaz and the Chems...)

still, wonderful for those who do plan to attend.

Being a SoCal native I go to Coachella every year. It's been so disappointing seeing the years go by and not having the the brothers on the lineup. I'm so stoked to have them back. I hope they are able to keep their momentum going from Portola here in the states so we can start seeing them more frequently!

What a lineup! Having Underworld and 2manydjs on there as well with Despacio all weekend.

I like the possibility of something else than the Coachella shows, and yes my feelings are 100% based on the fact that they'll be here for two weekends with down time that could be filled.

I mean it's obviously not that easy... They still need to have a certain venue that can put on their show without unreasonable limitations, one that would work with their budget, one that has availability, and one where it doesn't result in giving tickets away for free.

RE a dual us tour / any significant amount of US dates I don't imagine there will be anything until the album is out to drum up maximum demand.

Coachella have the strictest radius clauses out there, them being a major name at coachella almost guarantees they cannot do anything else on the west coast like sideshows. Also good (bad) chance they cannot do any festivals in the US full stop this summer.

Portola was definitely the testing grounds for a chems return to coachella i think, given both are AEG owned

strict but not wide. historically bands do organize west coast tours around Coachella. San Francisco is a particularly common place for them to play between Coachella weekends, as is Vegas. even cities as close as Santa Barbara and San Diego appear to be outside of the radius.

and even then, once the festival sells out Goldenvoice makes exceptions and books some of the Coachella acts at other Goldenvoice venues in the LA area.

Hey Dark! Welcome back! That band 'who shall not be naned' is nowhere near the polo fields this time around, and their foul stench that was left on the grass has been aired out just in time for our saviors to take us up for the rapture!

Heads up everybody doing the presale ( from the Coachella website)

'Our ticketing platform is now powered exclusively by AXS'

https://www.coachella.com/festival-info/

Once you go to the page, you'll see this:

'Create an AXS Coachella Fan account now or update your current AXS information HERE'

Click on the word 'HERE' and it will take you this page:

To login this page, just use the same AXS account that you have already. I tried it already and it works for both.

I'm assuming this page might be used to order the tickets on Friday!

Just be sure your AXS account is ready to go: address, credit card info, etc!

Please call your credit card company at least an hour before the pre-sale. Let them know your doing a online purchase and you don't want any hiccups or fraud alerts, or declines. Better safe than sorry.

And if possible, login into your AXS minutes prior to the presale. This also might save you another login if you are asked during the presale!

The point of this post is this! I'm really hoping that our AXS accounts will pre-fill the info needed to buy the tickets (billing info, CC number ,etc)  and save some time checking out without problems. (EDIT : AXS will not pre-fill account info once you get to the presale screen! Maybe use a Chrome extension to autofill your details might work.) I just want to be in and out of there!  Please prepare yourselves, get up early, drink some coffee, or have some friends help you or use multiple devices to get tickets.  I will NOT use my mobile device to order my tickets. Laptop or desktop is better because of typing and screen size.

I don't want any of you to lose your chance in getting tickets. Weekend 2 is what I'm shooting for!

Best of luck to all of you!

Never thought I'd consider going to Coachella (getting too old, don't like the heat, etc.) but Chems & Underworld (& Gorillaz, Bjork, Chromeo, Remi Wolf, FKJ, Sasha & Digweed...) is probably the most tempting it will get.

I'm in the same boat as Darkstar. Will highly consider if it seems like a big forum event. But preference will be to find somewhere nearby (?) to stay and rent a car or something to peace out each night.
Is there realistically enough time to get the gang on board before all the tickets go on general sale??

Same as Enjoyed in terms of staying off-site and renting vehicles.

Yes, but for weekend 2.

Tickets might be reportedly be "sold out" or "unavailable" come this weekend. This is just headline fodder to create buzz.  History has shown that resale market gets flooded with passes from people who have changed their mind. They're plentiful and sometimes cheaper than original sale price, especially for weekend 2.

If you know for sure you're going, no problem in buying your pass right away. Otherwise for those on the fence, I would say you have time and probably better off waiting.

I think the hardest part would be to secure any type of reasonably priced accommodations. I have tent camp this festival twice, and it wasn't that bad, but that was in my early 20's... obviously, not doing that again.

I'm not sure tbh!

If the presale announcement was made earlier in advance, maybe more time would be given for us to think it over and see who's going. But since the announcement was 2 days ago, it's going to be a rush to make a quick decision.

But when I went to Portola in SF and saw the Chems, I knew there was a great chance for them to come to Indio because of all the hype and the reviews after the show.

Since late December, I've been checking the Coachella website to see if the announcement would pop up, and if it did, I knew 100 percent that the Chems would be on it.

Now the clock is ticking,...

Seeing as some of you are basing your decisions on others, my plan is I think I'm going to hold off making any decision of attending Coachella until the first weekend of February 3rd - 5th. I think at that point we'll have a better view on whether or not The Chemical Brothers (or Underworld) have posted any additional American tour dates while here in April.

In the meantime, I'll be keeping an eye out for some rentals for weekend 2 of Coachella.

Title: Re: Coachella 2023
Post by: gfa2001 on Jan 13, 2023, 15:17
Just to throw this in - weekend 1 is almost sold out already off presale so weekend 2 will be far easier to get tickets for later today when the tickets drop.

There's lots of coachella subreddits / forums to ask questions on if you have specific info you want to ask about. Its incredibly expensive across the board, genuinely would be cheaper for anyone on the east coast to just fly to Europe (and get a better crowd too!)
Title: Re: Coachella 2023
Post by: Darkstar on Jan 13, 2023, 16:58
I think I'm with Bosco about waiting on the decision a little longer. Want to see about other dates, about getting a solid crew from the forum together, and I haven't discussed this at all with my spouse yet - so committing today is out.  But I'm excited to be even considering this and to have the opportunity.

Bummed out the Chems aren't playing Sonar in Barcelona this year as we'll be in Barca and Ibiza around that time - but this might make up for it.

After 30 min of waiting in line, I finally got in! All my AXS info went automatically. The only thing I had to fill out was my security code from CC and thats it! Took me at least one minute to complete the purchase!

Tickets...DONE!

The first year I went, single day tickets cost nearly $80, with fees. I saw Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Ben Harper, and DJ Shadow.

I just saddled a credit card with 15 times that much... (although that was the price of 2 tickets)

I'm a tentative yes for now. Although that could change.

Yep! And look how far we come now? In 5 years time, we could see 3 days passes go for a grand!

And if Goldenvoice had their way, they could charge for parking for $$$ !per vehicle....per day!

I miss single day passes when you can just come to Indio and see the Chems and head out when the night is done. Now we got tracking wristbands, smartphones blocking the view, lineup conflicts where 2 of your favorite bands/ singers are performing at the same time and gotta choose one!

Anyways, looking forward to some new material again this time around!

Usually in the first week of March, Goldenvoice releases a calendar of all the Coachella acts that have local shows around the Coachella dates. That's usually when artists get the go ahead to start announcing other shows that are on the lineup. All the shows are AEG venues.

I would recommend getting Coachella tickets asap. As the headliners will be a huge draw and the secondary market for tickets will be the most expensive it's been in years.

Coachella is great. Highly recommend it. There's always something interesting to watch and the festival grounds are unrivaled. I know it gets a bad rap for all the influencers and how expensive it is but I think it's worth it. Some of the best crowds I've been in have been at Coachella.

It's pretty great when it hits right. I've been 5 times, and although I haven't been since 2013, I actually do believe it deserves it lofty admission price. The layout and production put forth by the festival truly feels premium. The lineups whether you like the certain artists or not, always come with some one-of-kind moments...

Like last year, Danny Elfman played a set which included him stripping off his shirt, showing off his largely tatted and surprisingly muscular ginger physique (keep in mind he's in his late 60's). All while playing songs from his very bizarre 'Big Mess' album, Oingo Boingo favorites, and various beloved movie and soundtrack hits. And if that wasn't enough, he had a full band, partial orchestra, choir, guest appearances by Steve Bartek (Oingo Boingo) and Wes Borland. I mean this is the type of shit that happens. It will NOT be repeated (well ok, maybe for weekend 2). If you go and see this, this is the type of thing that stays with you forever. Weird, and priceless:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOhVq6xOb8A

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m05q6Dsyg7Y

I think the real tragedy is everything else: food, lodging, transportation costs, merchandise, etc... It's all overpriced.

The other caveat is the crowd has shifted significantly both in quality and in numbers over the years. When I last went in 2013, I could certainly feel a change in the quality of attendees, and there was a lot of moments during the festival where I felt overwhelmed by the crowd size. I imagine this is an ongoing problem to this day, but this is a subjective issue. It's all dependent of your personal tolerance.
Title: Re: Coachella 2023

my first year was $70 + $6.50 fees per day. attendance was 30k people. those days are long gone.

friends are encouraging me to join them. this is a difficult decision.

I echo Bosco though. some magical moments are created out there. if you haven't been before and you're interested this year and have the means then absolutely, do it. (the reasons I'm on the fence are largely because I'm old and grumpy now)

I got an idea where to stay...

Would have to be a shared cost up to 6 people (4 comfortably) to make it reasonable. Talking about ~$500 per person with 6 people, $~750 per person with 4. And that's for dates 4/20-4/24.

I have stayed at this location twice before with small groups. But it's nothing exceedingly grand like some of swanky houses out there. It's about as nice as a standard hotel. Perk: it has a lazy river.

Also, they're really strict at overcrowding units. They check nightly (typically upon your return from festival at guard house), you can not sneak more than 6 people per unit.

It's not too far from festival, but it would require a vehicle for transportation.

I'm going to have a much better idea of my resources for this journey in the next 2 weeks.

It was my hope that I was going to be able to exclaim that I was going to be able to roll at Coachella like an absolute baller, but yesterday's mediation ended sooner than it should have.

Have I mentioned that I hate insurance companies? Especially when they start fighting with each other.

What I really want to say is--I don't give a f*ck which one of you pays more. And that is why the mediator doesn't put the attorneys in the same room as the adjusters.

Nonetheless, I am intrigued by Bosco's suggestion.

For what it's worth, in no way can I take the lead on booking any accommodations. I'm still very much undecided about the trip.

If you guys are interested the location I'm speaking of,  it's the Worldmark of Indio (https://worldmark.wyndhamdestinations.com/us/en/resorts/united-states-of-america/california/indio/worldmark-indio). So yeah, it's a timeshare. But some of the units are available through timeshare owners on online vacation booking sites, which you can rent from.

Unexpectedly, I had a unwanted expense that came up. But I said to myself 'no biggie' so I checked hotels nearby.

Damn, the one I've been going to for the last 5 Coachellas is willing to put the smack down on my wallet. But then again, it's been years since my last Coachella, so price increases/up-hiking due to nearby music festival is a given.

Bosco! I like your idea,! If all goes well,  everyone might benefit from it

Haha, you drove out there and checked it out???! Well, did you like what you saw? Dates are blacked out with the resort because it's all reserved with timeshare owners. A lot of the units can be found for rent on Airbnb and VRBO with timeshare owners looking to make a quick buck.

Lol!  When I got to the gate and rang the bell, no one answered, so I went around the back and scaled a 7 foot fence. As soon as I landed on the other side, I heard dogs barking, then just immediately, a gun went off! I ran my ass back to the gate and hopped over it again. I then made my way to the streets and acted kind of casual like nothing happened, but what do you know, the Indio police roll up on me and made me eat pavement with a Judo takedown.

Luckily, the police got an urgent dispatch to another call while I was on the hood of their car being handcuffed. They let me go because they said they have other fish to fry..

So I never got the chance to 'check' it out Bosco.
Maybe I should've called first!

Ok seriously now!

I  scoured the net and couldn't find any vacancies for Worldmark Indio through Airbnb, timeshare, etc. But I saw plenty of other similar places near the festival that looked promising.

I know it's still early, and not trying to rush whatsoever, but im still down to splitting costs with those who want to share an accomodation. The more the merrier! If anyone has ideas please share.  Looking forward to meeting  all of you fine gentleman...in 91 days.

I know Bosco! I should've been more clear when I said 'went on a whim and checked it out'! But your response was well played sir! But then again so was mine. It's all good!

Reminds me of the unpopular quote from LOTR: 'It was just a bit of fun ! Oh you're probably right as usual'

I saw your link!  Never seen that one before, and it's a start!

Yeah, this is basically me too. I'm not officially giving up, but I'm not someone to count on with joint accommodations.

I could definitely see myself getting desperate as time rolls on to April. Which then, I just might channel my inner Richard Dreyfuss from Close Encounters and scrape and claw my way to Coachella. If I start making mashed potato sculptures, I'll know for sure.

Driving the trip, for me, wouldn't be out of the question. So starting or joining a caravan, might be a possibility. I'm looking at this as a last hurrah of my youth, so to speak.

I had hoped that everything would have come together for me logistics wise--long story short, I don't have fists full of cash yet.

So what this means is that I end up in the same situation as Bosco--I was certainly thinking about this as a last-hurrah. I figured that I was unlikely to end up going to Choachella ever again beyond this one last opportunity, so I was starting to commit myself.

But the truth is that the total cost is going to be approaching the price of a used car. The tickets to Coachella alone are more than it would cost for me to fly to Seattle and back for the newly-announced show there.

So looks like I'm out as well.

I was absolutely looking forward to the vibes, though. Make no mistake--Coachella is, indeed, a magical experience despite the price.

I wish everyone who goes an extraordinary time.

I have been occasionally teasing myself with the idea of going, also imagining the magic feeling, but with Chems and Underworld having now announced other dates in CA my interest has severely declined. (now if I could get a Bjork orchestral show too...)

Guys, I've been avoiding this thread because it pains me so much that I cannot attend Coachella - there is a first for everything. My first time seeing the Chems was at the first Coachella... and this will be my first time missing the Chems at Coachella. Like some of you, logistically it isn't panning out. For so many reasons. With the exception of enjoying the Chems my husband does not particularly care for Coachella, the investment of time and resources, the scene, the parking lot at the end of the day, yadayada. 🤷🏼♀️I can't disagree! And as there is a first for everything, I would not wish for a first time experience without my husband there (I am codependent, lol).

I know the Chems' triumphant return to Coachella will be nothing short of amazing and I cannot wait to read about it here!!

One of the reasons I got into OG message board was when you guys shared your experiences back in 2005. You know, back when not everyone had an access to cell phones and meeting strangers off the internet was still sketchy. It was amazing to see and read about fully devoted forum members, who are complete strangers in real life, come from all across continent, to get together at a single event. That was an amazing feat at one time. I know, because it made a huge impression on me and pushed me to participate.

I'm empathically sad for Whrils and Jim for missing a chems coachella experience.  It's like when I couldn't control Whirls excitement prior to Portola. But now it's flipped and I can't control my sadness.

I hinted at it before in the other thread, but I am now confirming as a cancellation for coachella now that the other shows are happening. Like everyone else, it comes down to cost. I've already sunk the money into the tickets. Hopefully the buyback comes through. Sure, I'm disappointed at missing the chems and other acts in the lineup, but I'll take a regular non-festival live set any day. Plus, with a majority of the board confirming for the SB or Seattle shows (or both), the experience with them already sounds exponentially better.

Aw man, I'm sorry you are taking a seat on Coachella too, but can completely understand! It's an investment not just with money, but with time too!

In my case, for a change it's not so much the finances, but rather the time and logistics for getting 3 days away. Jim and I are my mom's sole caretakers and she cannot be left alone for too long and certainly not left alone overnight. Whereas it was easy peasy to get a grandparent to sit for Connor back in the day... the same cannot be said for my mom. The Santa Barbara show is perfect for us, and Connor is taking one for the team and has agreed to senior-sit so his old mom and dad can go break a hip to the Chems, haha!

Back around 2006/07, the term New Rave was coined by the UK music press. A Chemical-related band, Klaxons were at the spearhead.

As Jamie Reynolds of Klaxons says in this Machester Evening News article (https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/music/klaxons-glow-for-it-985404#), "Basically, we had five of our friends bring glowsticks to our first gig because we thought it would be funny and it snowballed from there." ...The whole glowstick manufacturing industry is hinged on the Klaxons. "I'm waiting for a knock on my door and a bouquet of flowers from Mr Glo."

Certainly by the time I saw Klaxons at Shepherds Bush Empire in May 2007, glowsticks were in abundance. I remember huge quantites of glowsticks and beer flying around the venue. People were chucking them from the upstairs section at the downstairs section and vice versa. I had never seen anything like it (and so much wasted beer!).

Sadly by the time Klaxons played Brixton Academy just over a year later, they decided to ban glowsticks from their own gig. I was at that one too, and I remember people being asked to remove their glowstick "necklaces" by door security.

This vice article (https://www.vice.com/en/article/8qqabb/the-definitive-history-of-new-rave-in-eight-tracks-narrated-by-jamie-from-klaxons) covers the story of New Rave, including Klaxons discussing the glowstick ban they imposed at that Brixton gig. It also covers other bands who were placed under the "New Rave" genre title by the media, such as The Sunshine Underground (hmm, I wonder where they got their name from?).
The proliferation of glowsticks at that time then transferred to festivals around 2007/08 (and beyond) in the UK. It looks like the US followed suit.

It seemed to me around that time coachella's forums were used to organise these at several acts - saw it for Radiohead and Modeselektor too. Radiohead is a bit of a weird choice, would probably just find it a bit annoying out of place vs for chems or a more dance / party act.

Glowstick ban is quite funny (good for waste though i guess), weird it came from Klaxons too. Good band them

I'm so stoked you asked! 😊😊 Yes, I have seen the Chems at Coachella since 1999. Most of my reviews are buried in the pages of the live threads and archive on this site. I do not have a proper review of their show from 1999 though - I wasn't involved in the Chems community (no mailing list yet - I did not join until til 2000, and there was no forum at that time to rant and rave in). But anyway you sent me on a trip down memory lane searching through old Chems mailing list emails! I had completely forgotten a mailing list user had a site set up where he compiled some reviews and interviews and whatnot from earlier days. A couple of my youthful exploits can be read here (under my real name Mia):

The glowruption was crazy during The Brothers in 2011. Soon as the bass dropped in Don't Think it rained glow sticks. Props to the organizers and the crowd for not letting any go until that deep into the set. Definitely a moment.

Honorable mention to Underworld for having my second favorite glowruption at Coachella. Absolutely poured down during King of Snake. Karl Hyde looked quite pleased when it happened.

I remember this being organized on the Coachella forum. I thought it was a pretty dumb idea at the time and one which I kinda wanted to avoid, but we were right in the mix of it.

The amount of glow-sticks that were present was pretty amazing, even the videos don't do it justice. I'm not sure how they managed to convince security (which is pretty efficient at Coachella) to allow it, without some heavy scrutiny.

Ah the Glowruption, a thing of beauty. Not bad for the glowstick mafia to put this together. I got pelted a little but still remains a great memory of past shows.

if any of you read Whirls live show reviews from the planet dust site, let me remind you that she is ONE OF THE FIRST EVER to write a live music review for a band ON THE INTENET when 56k modems were available.

Live show reviews weren't even around that much in the pre-internet days!

some details start to be revealed about the live stream.

they have SIX channels this year, seemingly each one dedicated to a stage, both weekends.

so we may get more coverage than in past, maximizing our chance of chems coverage. possibly even the whole set, both weekends.

(click through to YouTube to see the details in the description)

...odd how they say "all stages". I guess the Yuma doesn't count as a stage?

Not many festivals release set times until the week of (although most do give the stage). I reckon second stage headliner.

I agree with you, Csar. It's a sucky statement/headline (actually the headline from an article in January). Not because I'm white and offended, but because it undermines the history of the festival and the general diversity it provided from the get-go, without telling it to your face or putting in writing.

To the credit of the writers, they're stating a fact. But it does come off celebratory, which creates a vibe of reverse racism.

I would say don't look into it too much. We getting old, and the way race and diversity is processed through each generation is always going to be different.

Unfortunately, the idea that we need to focus on racial backgrounds as a means of "progress" is what a lot of people consider "news."

This isn't news, it's what people lovingly call a "nothingburger."

This is what happens when you don't have any actual news to write about, you neither use nor recognize guiding principles of journalism, and you have a deadline to meet.

Welcome to news reporting in 2023.

I have no preference to what stage they'll play on, but since I came out of Coachella retirement (last show was 2011) I'm wondering about the expansion and upgrades the stages have gotten.  I DM Ed about it but he's been mum (crickets)

Either stage I'm gonna be blown away!

Now about that Sahara....hmmmmmm!

Outdoor Theatre is going to be awesome. This has no meaning (especially since the Chems perform at night), but It's my favorite stage to watch artists on-stream during the daytime. The performers get a fantastic view of the mountains and the massive scale of the festival.

Time out - we'll be able to watch live on YouTube? Is this confirmed?

It kinda sucks for the attendees that they're playing on the first night because it's all downhill from there.

Is this it for US dates this year? I've been waiting for about 10 years for them to come back to Chicago but at this point it looks like I'll have to make a trip out somewhere.

That would place it at a 11:20-11:25pm pst end time potentially leaving time for 1-2 encore songs (though I doubt it). The Reel is usually 8-10 minutes from first chords to ending synth squeals.

If I remember correctly from Portola, it only took the stage crew 45 minutes to setup between James Blake and T&E. The 1hr20 gap gives wiggle room for setup.

the irony is that Labrinth is closing out that tent, but there's no hurry for them to get on @ 10:35 exactly! They can make an exception to go at least 20 min late and give that time to Underworld!

but then again alot of artists are getting 40-50 min!

and retweeting:

Why is Coachella streaming the entire festival live, for free? Is this just a data collecting thing, rather than exposure for the festival?

Edit: it looks to be heavily sponsored, which I don't recall before. I hope this doesn't take away from stream with advertisements during sets.

Quote
Sponsored by Fast X, Verizon and NYX Professional Makeup in the U.S. and Levi Strauss and Co across much of Europe, the weekend one livestream gets rolling at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET on Friday, April 14th and runs through Sunday night, April 16th. Weekend two kicks back into gear the following Friday, April 21st at the same time, with Tic Tac® and Dove Shower Collection as sponsors in the U.S. and Levi Strauss and Co again in Europe, with livestream festivities running through Sunday, April 23rd. Tune in reminders can be set now (http://yt.be/coachella)!

also this tidbit about replays:

Quote
If you can't tune in live, the festival sets will be on repeat after the night's final performance until the live show picks back up at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET the next day. Highlights from many of the weekend's performances will be made available on demand, so be sure to check back here (http://yt.be/coachella) to rewatch your faves

On/Off-Topic.

Watching Blink-182 is so weird in Sahara after seeing dance acts earlier in the day. Also weird to see them as...old guys being misogynistic.

Overmono was a good pump up prior to later this week. The remix of The Streets "Turn The Page" is straight FYAH!!!!!

Lets not diss the use of preachers/activists in dance music. A forthcoming Chems track may do something very similar with a Jesse Jackson speech...

My sound bar is smoking. My puppy with his giant ears barked at the television a couple of times  :D

With the camera angles on the livestream, I did find it challenging to get a sense of scale, and grasp audience reaction. Not sure if it was my connection but picture and sound quality greatly improved later in the set!!

I'm hoping and looking forward to some first hand accounts!

Not a bad way to start the weekend and a fantastic end to Friday evening. I love the set and am so glad this was streamed and shared  :)

That was a damn good show! The Coachella reunion is complete!

I think a new crowd came to discover the.chems for the first time. Crowd went from mild to average, but I'll investigate once I touchdown next week

Glad alot of people showed up at the Discord Chemchella!

Hear Hear! So happy The Chemical Brothers returned to Coachella. The universe seems a little more complete with their reunion after a 12 year absence.

Sad that most of us missed it, but having the ability to stream the show is pretty awesome substitute.

I'll echo, Love Is All!

okay, I find this funny that there have been three different chats going on during the show. One crazy one in the #chemchella discord. One calm relaxed one in the discord vid feed with old fourmies (foxboy, shkrmkr, I), and the one here. I'm sure everyone avoided the YT chat as it was probably kids screaming for blackpink.

Laughed out loud at this.. the chemchella chat reminded me of myself on this very forum, only almost 20 years ago...

It was like a crazy box of spiders, that chat, but lovable and endearing energy.

Reminds me of Trafalgar Sq 2007 when I was walking up the street with Jeanie and Mips to a wetherspoons and saw a spray painted TheChemicalBrothers logo on the pavement and I just let out an uncontainable yelp of excitement. This chat however, seemed like that yelp only constantly.. it was pretty funny I must say and should be encouraged!  :D

It was good craic flying between the two discords (my first time using that app) where one was just going off and the other was like a bunch of old timers (including myself these days).

Very fun, same time next week.

it's weird to think of how they played 6 of the first 12 Coachellas, then took another 12 years to return.

tangentially, someone also reminded me recently that Perry Farrel performed in some capacity at every Coachella until... 2006? 2007? I forget when that streak ended. anyway, moving on.

Thank you! I caught it from MAH onwards.Nice to experience the current show in decent(ish) sound/vision quality on my TV.

For some reason I enjoyed the long intro on No Reason this time around, though I've previously thought it was too long.
Was there a mistake in HBHG? The intro drum overlaid on a later part of the track where I wouldn't expect it. Or was that deliberate but I just didn't dig it?
Nice to experience Dreaming in decent(ish) quality instead of insta/phone clips (though I did hear it last August at Field Day).
I like this Setting Sun but would also like it if it eventually built up to "full on" original version so that it would hit a bit harder.
The Wide Open intro? Yeah it's alright but the topline sacharine-sweet melody is perhaps a bit too sweet and "music box" or "EDM" for my taste.
Ah, there's the "tin robots transition" from Do It Again into Temptation/SG which we had previously heard in isolation from Estereo Picnic insta posts (https://forum.thechembase.com/index.php/topic,3180.msg31582.html#msg31582).
Swoon sounds like a nice melodic palette cleanser after some of the other full-on stuff.
Galvanize - did it sound a bit cluttered or messy to anyone, or just me? I don't think it's a particularly new live version but maybe it's been edited or the mixing was just a bit funny? Galvanize felt a bit short at Field Day too, I think.

Crowd looked fine to me. I didn't think "dead" at all. Also at a festival you have to pace yourself a bit more than a stand-alone gig. I liked the glow-in-the-dark mask with the moving images on it. Too bad it probably isn't N99 or N95 so may not be much use other than as a dust/sand mask.

Quote from: Csar on Apr 15, 2023, 05:57
Not just too long but also the melody is a bit meh (has a certain "EDM" vibe).

Edit
Oh, but that's new! That I liked! Gotta need more of this!
What's new?

BTW re live discussion/Discord, I imagine if WhiteNoise were here, he would remind us that there is  a live chat feature on the forum. We used it before - circa 2018 when a European festival did a similar live stream. I'm not sure that it saves the chat afterwards though (?).

The Discord party was well received! I counted about 50+ in the Chemchella channel, while others were in other channels watching the stream on YT. Bumped into Ryno and others there and had a blast spamming words like WOO, I FEEL LIKE I'M DREAMIN, BACK, etc! Some of the Discord members do lurk here and I just found out last night on the chat that they refer us ( forum) as the true OG"s!   ::)

I just woke up right now, and for some reason after watching last nights show,  I feel like I just came back from an actual gig! Just my only instant impression right now.

suspect it's more that Coachella might limit the amount of merch an artist has space for in the merch tent.

Possibly. I could see where they might "lease" a certain amount of space at the merch tent.  But shakermaker basically says what I'm trying to get across. Something unique to the festival would have been an instant sellout.

They underestimated the amount of unconscious spending that goes on at Coachella.

perhaps it's leftover Portola swag? for one reason or another it feels random for Coachella but felt more fitting in San Francisco. it didn't feature the event name, so perhaps they are offloading extras.

I kinda associated the Tie-Dye swag with "The Darkness That You Fear" music video. Along with sweatshirt and t-shirt, they had a Tie-Dye bucket hat, which reminded me of the 90's rave culture, again, as depicted in the TDTYF music video.

Also, this stuff was available in Denver show so it wasn't exclusive to Portola, either.

Just got back from the desert. What a weekend!

Great showing from The Brothers! My friend group got to the stage about 20 minutes before they were set to play. We made it all the way to the right front rail. We spent those 20 minutes talking to some of the people in the crowd. People were hyped! A lot of first timers. Once the show started the crowd erupted and stayed into it the entire show. Coachella has larger vip viewing areas in the front of the stages and that crowd always seems dull but I can assure you the general admission crowd was an absolute party.

Easily one of my favorite shows I have seen of theirs. The energy was incredible. It's all anyone wanted to talk about for the rest of the weekend.

Also for those attending the second weekend please make sure to see Underworld, 2manydjs and the Despacio tent. All were true standouts.

Flying back home to Seattle tomorrow to catch The Brothers at the WAMU!

https://twitter.com/coachella/status/1649191246232195072

Chems going on 9:45PM rather than 9:50PM (weekend 1).

It's been amusing to watch the Frank Ocean debacle unfold this week. Feel bad for his fans that based their trip out to desert because of his headlining set.

Edit:
Spoiler
Beck appeared with Gorillaz on Jimmy Kimmel the other night. I mention this because I would count on Beck being a special guest for Gorillaz for Weekend 2. Now, what would be extra special is, if Beck showed up for Chemical Brothers on 'Wide Open'. I mean he's already there, why not?!

True, but they have golf carts behind the scenes to zoom people across the festival. Plus, Outdoor Theatre is not that far from Main Stage (based off of prior experience).

It probably won't happen just because the Chems set is so programed. But this is the type of fun stuff that does happen when you're at Coachella. We'll have to wait and see if there is some flexibility!

My three opinions:

- Maybe Tom mixed a lot of FX, more than usual, which sometimes caused pain in the ears
- Or maybe Coachella team streamed FOH processed sound, which was developed in real time for venue speaker system characteristics and not for household devices, etc
- Or someone of three just screwed up anyway: Tom or Ian or Shan

Incidentally Ed did his Coachella tweet.

* Fun fact about Shan Hira. He used to be in a band called Stockholm Monsters. They were signed to Manchester's Factory Records, the same label as New Order. Peter Hook of New Order is friends with Shan Hira, and one time when Stockholm Monsters went on tour, Hook decided he wanted to go with them so he went as their sound man. And now Shan is a sound man for the Chems.
So, another little connection between the Chems and New Order there.

So far, the Chems audio sounds better than last week
Certainly sounds cleaner. Also the video footage from Coachella is more produced than last week.

They are for sure messing with volumes between vocals and the synths so parts are sticking out. However, it feels like they are getting through songs faster which makes me wonder if there is going to be TPPR at the end.

Whoa. Can't compare to last week's Coachella set but there were some wild sounds and FX I don't remember from the Seattle set. Amazing and high energy.

Sorry (not sorry) to be that guy again but if anyone got a recording of this week's set I'd love a PM  :D

What a fabulous Friday night in!

Experienced this show last night with our brother/sister/siblinghood chemmunity over  on Discord! That was a lot of fun! The excitement over there was infectious!!  ❤️🚨❤️

We watched the livestream on our tv. My 83 year old mom lives with us, and she watched most of the show with us which was great since we didn't have to worry about waking her with all the ruckus is our living room. It was really cute - she was dazzled by the spectacle, crazy sounds coming out of our sound system, the lights and visuals, was charmed by the robots, and was wowed by how much the crowd was enjoying themselves!

Feeling so thankful and fortunate to be a part of this little whirlwind US tour and for the well deserved exposure - hope more shows are on the way in the US somewhere down the road.

You folks the world over - get ready!!

Not sure on size but I'll try to get it under 2gb. I've got Handbrake which usually does a great job at compressing files.

BUT I'm currently watching Chemical Beats => Dreaming, and there's a male vocal in there singing/saying "Freedom" or something (?). I've never heard that before. Thoughts anyone?

Mine is around 1,6 Gb. It depends on which quality/format you rip the stream.

Edit : not recompressed, it was directly ripped from Youtube livestream.

Great clip! Which reminds me... During 'Free Yourself' there was a great cut away last night to an asian girl in the crowd a bit flummoxed. Worthy looking out for in the replays!

Ha! At first we see her hand go to her forehead, then when we come back to her she's sort of smiling/laughing but then putting both hands to her face. Almost as though she was trying to recreate the Don't Think film. Too bad there's no Acid Clown in the set these days...

The transitions are pretty good now. Mind you I think the snippet of Asleep From Day in the Acid Mashup was easier to spot last week than this (I'm not sure it really works though). And the transition from Star Guitar to Swoon seems very sudden when compared to other transitions. They seem to be packing in as many tracks as possible. And yet they're still using that 'prequel' at the start of Wide Open. Surely they could free up some time by getting rid of that. Oh, also I miss the cello/strings in Free Yourself. That's my favourite part of that track!

Ha, I just went back and caught a screen grab of her! Also, took a couple unflattering screen grabs of who I think is Tom DeLonge of Blink 182 (happened during DYOH/Get Up On It)

The camera/stream crew cut away from a wide angle shot of stage when the light beams shoot from the fingertips of the MAH figure. They manage to fuck it up twice, actually. The at-home audience missed the best part of the visual!

forum member KngtRdr WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME AT THE SHOW! I didn't find out til the next day!

There were a lot of vocals thrown out there that were too indescribable to make out but I know I didn't hear them at the SB show. I finally heard that quick snippet of let forever be ( tail end of song) that you gotta be quick to hear it.

I did notice that ed is doing a little bit more time near the left side/ center of the mixer instead of far right or far left. More hands-on for Ed and being closer to Tom is good!

Oh and just the tie dye shirts at Coach! Nothing else!

lol you're one of the cool kids now!! But you brought up a point - I'm not sure why it does that! 🤔 maybe a bug?

@Csar had asked if I wrote the Santa Barbara using the drafts feature and I did not - I wrote the review on my mobile's notepad, then copied and pasted to the forum and font was huge! I didn't intend for the review to be seen from space so went back and edited the font formatting on each paragraph.

REVIEW!

The best show I've been to in the last 10 years!

That is all!

But before I go here's an email I got from Goldenvoice: A survey of my experience at Coachella!

One of the questions was about parking! Here's my answer! (! INCOMING VENT)

'More parking! More communication with staff in letting us know where to park ( or put a parking guide in your app to give us realtime traffic updates where to park) On Friday ( WK 2) I got to the venue traffic around 530pm! I was told everytime I got close to the day parking area that the parking lot was full! I was told about this 3 different times at 3 different lots and I asked staff where to park and no one had an answer.  I never had this issue before! I was told to park at Riverside? ( This lady with a bullhorn was yelling in it but I could only make out from her voice that Riverside parking was available. I get to that parking lot and then I had to WALK to the venue for an hour and 16 minutes ( no shuttle.. WHY?) I got to the outdoor stage at 930pm ( just in the neck of time to see the Chemical brothers go on at 940-945pm!) Increase parking!'

I was literally freaking out and had a anxiety attack in my freaking car about the parking! I felt so bad because this would be the first time I would miss a Chems show because of parking. Screaming and honking and yelling with frustration on being told where to park and then find out that parking was full.

Never doing this shit again!

Dude, that's insane! I mean, I can imagine there's a high demand for lots, but this bad?!? You'd think Coachella was a fine-tuned machine by now after all these years.

Was it this route by any chance?
googleMaps/coachella-riverside (https://www.google.de/maps/dir/Riverside+County+Fairgrounds,+Arabia+Street,+Indio,+Kalifornien,+USA/Avenue+50+%26+Madison+St,+La+Quinta,+Kalifornien,+USA/@33.6948814,-116.2432483,4743m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x80daf788cbdf4b27:0x38a9bd2714150b77!2m2!1d-116.2230559!2d33.7106143!1m5!1m1!1s0x80daf80d7902633f:0x2e8befccabdbd5f6!2m2!1d-116.2513117!2d33.6853548!3e2)
If I had looked that up on a map, I would have been easily fooled to believe it isn't thaaat far away - but boy, it's a freakin' 1 hour walk.

Dang, incchem You got there just in time! Parking for the Chems has put you in a pickle lately!! But you stuck it out and got to have the time of your life so hopefully all that crazy anxiety and frustration melted away once the music started!

Parking at Coachella has always been.... Well. A fricken pain in the ass. Always. It was one of the primary reasons my husband flat out refused to go citing he's too old for that shit (yeah, I'm throwing him under the bus for me missing the Chems at Coachella :p )

^Yeah I saw this. Beck is pretty much a music junky. Shows up to all sorts of L.A. based shows, takes part in tributes (recently Beach Boys and Willie Nelson's 90th Birthday). If he's affiliated in anyway and available, he seems to show up more times than not.

Anyways, I don't know if his post hints at anything. I hope it does, I could see a day reserved for a live vocal recording session while they were in the desert/L.A.
