Title: Star Wars
Post by: Ben_j on Dec 13, 2015, 13:26
Only 3 days to wait ! (or 5 for the rest of the world. That's right, we're getting Episode 7 two days before everyone else ! most of the world, since a bunch of ther countries have a 16/12 release date too (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2488496/releaseinfo) )

I've started watching all of the movies again, starting with Episode 1, that I ended up skipping because it was too awful. I'm gonna watch the rest using the Machete order : 4, 5, 2, 3, 6 with 2 and 3 acting as a flashback after the shocking revelation of Vader being Luke's father, showing how Anakin grew to become Vader.
I wish Topher Grace's cut was released, it's an 85mn cut of Episodes 2 and 3 skipping all of the crappy parts. Unfortunately he made a deal with Lucas to never release it publicly.
I'm pretty sure Episode 7 will be much better than any of the prequel films. They failed on so many levels, especially The Phantom Menace...

Well

So now I've found Cereal Prize's (http://cerealprize.com/trailers/redux-of-the-jedi) website which features not only the trailer/e-vite for the screening Topher Grace showed to 50 people, but also four super geeks talking about it in an underground car park having just watched the screening. I could only manage nine minutes of those guys before the geekdom became too much.
Has anyone watched this edit? is it... Good?Bad?Ugly?

The Topher Grace edit or the one you posted below ? If the Topher Grace one, then no-one has seen it except for those 50 people and friends and family of Topher, because of the deal with Lucas.

Just came back from the movie. It was fucking awesome ! Every bit as good as what I hoped. I had some of the twists spoiled, though, but it was still incredibly good and entertaining. JJ Abrams got everything right ! The 3D was very good too, and it's rare enough to be mentionned. If you can see it in 3D, do so !

Funny thing, when I was waiting to get inside, a group of famous French actors, including Marion Cotillard passed us and apparently had a private screening arranged by Disney.

I don't know if anyone else has seen it yet, but there are a few things I'd love to discuss. I'll put them in spoiler tags, and I strongly advise anyone not to read them before seeing the movie, as I will reveal the whole plot

Spoiler

After seeing it, there was a debate among the people I went with : is Rey Luke's daughter ? I'm saying she is, it's quite obvious from all the hints :
- She's force-sensitive
- She looks an awful lot like Padme and Leia so she's got to be Padme's descendant
- What happens when she touches Luke's lightsaber
- What the orange thing tells her after the lightsaber incident
Obviously it's not explicitely said in the movie, which led some of my friends to think that she might not be Luke's daughter, especially considering JJ Abrams' knack for mistleading the audience. She could be Han and Leia's daughter but that would make little sense, since either Han or Leia would have had a reaction when meeting with her.

We'll see in episode 8 I guess...

One thing I found odd was how quick Rey seemed to grasp how to use the force. It might just be an indication of how strong she could be... At the opposite, Kylo Ren seemed rather weak in the final battle, as opposed to how strong he appeared in the rest of the movie (stopping a blaster shot in mid air, etc...). Could be that he's upset about just killing his father... Or just an indication that he is actually weak, which seems to be one of the reasons why Snoke recruited him.

Got our tickets and my son is out of school early and will hold us a spot in line so we can get prime seats tonight! Super, super excited! I re-watched A New Hope for the millionth time last night, so excitement senses tingling.  ;D Will A Force Awakens compare to the same feelings I had when I saw A New Hope the first time a million years ago, I don't know. But I know this is going to be pretty awesome.

As my son is a few months shy of being 18, I am so happy he's geeky enough to want to hang out with his old mom and dad at the movies instead of his friends.

As my son is a few months shy of being 18, I am so happy he's geeky enough to want to hang out with his old mom and dad at the movies instead of his friends.

I think he's gonna enjoy it more than the rest of us. The film is for sure for the new generation with the new characters.

I personally enjoyed the film.It was great, but I wasn't blown away! JJ Abrams did a hard task to bring Episode 7 to the screen when George Lucas swore that it would never happen.

Spoiler
Kylo didnt seem scary or threatening at all. He kind of came off like some spoiled kid. And since he's no certified Jedi or Sith lord, he has no control of his temper aka taking his saber and tearing shit up on a nearby control panel. I was a little disappointed that he took his mask off...twice. It kind of ruined any chance he had to take himself seriously. they could've showed the backside of his head and showed his hair while hes taking off the mask to add some mystery. Geez! I Liked Poe's character though, and look forward to the backstory of Rey and her knowledge of the Force.

The movie had an overall feel to the first SW ( a safe move for the writers and storyline) but felt like a sequel.

And don't worry...Han Solo is in the next 2 films!

Come on, from the moment he was announced in the movie, we all knew he would die. Harrison Ford and Lawrence Kasdan wanted Han Solo to die in the first movies. Lucas didn't agree, just to sell more toys. Even without the spoiler, I was pretty sure Han Solo would die.

And I did enjoy it a whole bunch. It's a good movie. It's not amazing. But I'm excited for the other two.

My biggest issues however...

Spoiler

One. Kylo Ren could have seen what was in Rey's brain, had she not had jedi powers to protect her, right? So why couldn't he simply see what was in Po's brain earlier and find out where the map was?
Two. The Starkiller planet sucked up all the energy from the sun to power its weapon. Where exactly was the sun it drew the energy from when it destroyed the Republic? I guess there could have been two suns in that particular system, maybe? But if not it would have had to move to some other sun, which, as a planet, I'm pretty sure it couldn't do. And if it had been successful in drawing in the energy from the sun it was currently draining to destroy the rebels, it would have been completely unusable afterwards because there were no more suns around.
It also didn't seem to get any darker anywhere considering the sun had nearly vanished...
Yes. I'm being that guy. But it could have drawn it's power from something else that took 30 minutes to charge. Why the sun?

Poe didn't see the map. That old guy just gives him the USB stick but he never sees the map.
The Starkiller base can destroy a system from very far away. It's why they can see the ray from whichever planet they're on. So the Sun doesn't have to be in the same system they're destroying

Whirly...you call it. Most of us are ready.

I'm waiting until the 31st on FB, but a 'spoiler' warning in the header is a good idea.

And Csar...c'mon dude!

Spoiler
I loved it and didn't mind the callbacks. My one critcism was the Starkiller superweapon. Having it be simply a base with a new gathering army would have been just as effective and the rescue would have worked just as well. Maybe moreso if Leia decided to send backup only after Han leaves without support. The superweapon aspect felt rushed, and a weapon that can extinguish stars is dangerous enough in iteslf.

I'm not sure how his character can survive, but both Character and Actor are listed for Episode VIII on IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2527336/?ref_=nv_sr_4). Could he be a ghost like Obi Wan? Kept 'alive' by his belief in the Force and with the spiritual help of Luke and Leia?
BTW I also think Rey must be Luke's daughter.
ps, as an Irishman I was waiting for the scene they filmed in Ireland and thought I must have failed to notice it.  But there it was, right at the end!

Apparently Abrams won't be directing the other films? (heard on howard stern interview) These franchises can either improve or go to shit when this happens. I guess if they keep up the art direction and same script writer it might survive. And Lucas not liking the 'retro' feel of it pffft. let it go. I thought it was a good balance.

Fun fact, in the "forceback" when Rey touches Luke's lightsaber and you can hear lines from Yoda, Luke, Obi Wan, etc... You hear Alec Guiness' Obi Wan saying "Rey". This was obviously not a new recording of Guinness, since he's dead. They instead took a line from the old movies where Guinness says "Afraid" and cut it to get the middle part so that it comes out as "Rey"

Some interesting reviews on IMDB

Spoiler
...many of them negative. This is one of the shorter ones that perhaps reflects what many are thinking:

spoilers inside: Please tell me i'm wrong for hating this.

The Plot...

Lonely, abandoned kid, barely existing in some desert junk yard, Accidentally (destiny) becomes a key figure. Father/son struggling to rekindle after a betrayal. Must stop super planet weapon from destroying peaceful planets by sneaking into the support site and taking down the shields. don't forget to hit the achilles heel and fly off before it all goes boom.

Did the writers have any new ideas, other then overt political correctness?

Despite the warm and fuzzy cameos and some new faces, There was no political intrigue, genuine suspense nor interesting fight sequences. We spend the whole movie waiting for the relationships to be confirmed without any interesting twists.
END

I guess JJ got the look and feel of the film right - no boring discussions about trade disputes,  but the story was kinda similar to the original 1977 film.  There's a review entitled "It's not a sequel but a remake" currently at the top of page 1 of the reviews HERE (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2488496/reviews?start=0) which goes into more detail. There are also comments about how Han Solo went out (assuming he's gone) with a whimper instead of a bang, which are difficult to argue with.

Maybe I need to get off IMDB...pretty soonNOW.  This comment on Rey's character is probably overthinking things, but it did make me smile:

Spoiler

To put it mildly. We are expected to believe a 5 year old girl is just dropped off on some planet, then 15 years later she is living alone in the wreck of an AT AT working as a scavenger. With, apparently, no parental figures around. So how does this work the first few weeks, as a 5 year old? How did she survive the slavers and sex traffickers? How does she acquire food and shelter? Where did she get the posh accent? Why is she eeking out miserable existence as a scavenger when she has lethal martial arts skills and is a masterful mechanic? Why doesn't she do what the vast majority of girls do in that situation, find some man or become a prostitute/drug addict?

But I'm supposed to believe, going by what the movie tells me, that she has grown up on her own. Taught herself all her skills on her own. Surviving on a planet full of villains and apparently no police force, on her own. And yet she's the sweetest, cleanest posh girl you are likely to meet in the entire galaxy.

Thank you JJ. Thanks for not insulting our intelligence.

^I've seen it twice so far, and that's still my quibble. We know nothing about Rey's background. I assume (hope) the future films will address this in more detail - it's such a gaping hole, hopefully intentionally.

But the whole movie has an issue with dropping you in the middle of things. Not that the other films didn't do that, but we were given time to learn about R2D2, C3PO, Luke, Leia, and everyone else in turn as they're introduced. We got to see who they were before they were thrown into events. Here, we're at best "told" the background of Fin, Rey, Rylo, etc. making it harder to care about what they go through.
Spoiler
Especially Han and Leia's relationship, what Ben did to it, and Han's final confrontation with his son - it's relegated to a single awkward conversation and a sudden death scene. This should be heartbreaking!

And the film is so fast paced, I never felt sucked into the world or story as I did in any of the first 6 films - maybe because I saw them as a kid, but it just feels a lot harder to immerse into the world of Star Wars with this film than it did with all the others. I wouldn't have minded 10 more minutes of runtime. Only from making some scenes a few seconds longer. Hold on a shot for a while. Take your time!

Finally, the plot of this film lifts SO much from Episode 4, it practically plays out as an alternate version of Episode 4! If the next film borrows this heavily from Episode 5 I'm going to be annoyed.

All this being said I did like it. Great action sequences, very entertaining and well realized characters (even if we know very little about them), nailed the visual style of the old films too (though there was less "new" to get into thanks to that). It was thoroughly entertaining, funny, exciting, all that.

I saw it a third time this past weekend. I haven't seen a movie this many times in the theater since I was in junior high, hahaha! I am... A bit embarrassed to be nerding out so hard over this movie. I understand people are annoyed at how closely this resembles A New Hope, but as that was my favorite of the Star Wars films (and was my first movie-going experience), I am not the least bit bothered by the borrowed nostalgia. The repeat viewings also give me a chance to notice things I didn't catch when I was too dazzled the first time around. It also gives me some leverage when trying to digest the plethora of theories and commentaries floating around.

It does have plot holes, and there are questions left unanswered and the film could have benefitted from being a tad longer to bring us up to speed with the character's back stories. However this is just a new beginning and I believe the gaps will tighten and there will be answers to our questions as the new leg of the Star Wars journey moves forward.

Kylo is badly injured (remember how Chewie's crossbow sends all those stormtroopers flying ?) and upset (he just killed his father).

I figured Finn had the same combat training as the First Order trooper wielding the riot control baton. Finn was a fully trained trooper set in the sanitation area, not  a janitor as people elsewhere have said. Ren at full strength should have been no match, but I could suspend belief between the injury and training. And Finn did  get sliced up in the end.

Now obviously I have things to say about Star Wars but I'd never heard that anecdote about Not Another Drugstore? I'd always that thought that was part of Justin Warfield's little "exit planet dust and fly from planet nine" monologue? Or are you talking about something different?

And I had never thought about the Chewie snub from Leia. Poor show.

I have to say, having seen the movie maybe 4 times now, I don't have much desire to see it again for a long time (unlike Harry Potter, which I finished making my girlfriend watch last night and am totally ready to re-watch).

Hit pause at 1.11 on the above trailer. It's Canary Wharf station on the London Underground.
On the right is a glass and metal "wall" to stop people people falling onto the tracks, with doors built in to line up with the train doors when it pulls into the station (though the majority of stations don't have this). On the left are escalataors which have been made to look like they're not escalators.  Fascinating ,eh?

All these Star Wars ROGUE ONE scenes and dialogue were included in the official trailers and TV spots, but they were eventually left on the cutting floor during the editing, and were not included in the movie for different reasons. It's a shame, there are many great scenes here, from the planets Lah'mu, Eadu and Jedha, to the Rebel Base on Yavin 4, Death Star and the final battle on Scarif!

I fell asleep during the first half of Rogue One.

Didn't like the characters, didn't like the actors/actresses portraying the characters, the editing/story execution was bad, plot jumped between a bunch of different systems needlessly, little exposition and setup for the characters...

But the latter half of the movie was very good. Conceptually it's awesome--it's fantastic to see a back story to getting the death star plans and I loved the way that they ended it right back where it originally started. It was fulfilling.

The inclusion of the CGI Princess Leia + Grand Moff Tarkin was... odd... Especially Leia. Damn. Cartoon.

I don't even know what to say anymore, this is such a sad year, and when I heard what were her last words, I almost bawled.
Fuck you 2016, I wished I just slept through it.
May the force be with them both.

came back from the cinema. and yes, me gusta. better than episode 7, not better than episode 4-6. exact what i wanted from the movie.

Spoiler
and with cgi tarkin and leia: on tarkin you can see the cgi, on leia i haven't. but that could be because her scene was short as fuck. but be prepared, i think we meet cgi leia in episode 9 again

Just came back from Rogue One and I enjoyed it. I could be more critical, but the newness is winning me over for now. I will say, that was a lot of death, destruction, and apocalyptic scenarios for a Disney film.

I agree the acting was pretty bad, but I can't say I blame the actors/actresses. They didn't allow any character development. Too bad, because I have enjoyed the work of Ben Mendelsohn (please check him out on the season 1 series 'Bloodline' on Netflix), Diego Luna, and Forest Whitaker. It's probably for the best though, considering the movie was simply the glue between episodes 3 and 4.

The real star of this film is the Maldives. How fucking beautiful where those beach scenes?! Too bad the country will swallowed by the ocean soon.

Yes, that is fine and good and all, but let's focus on the music.

One of my favourite songs of all time.

My fiancée got really sick of me constantly telling her that I could be a backpack while she runs.

Love a bit of Yoda hip hop. Surprisingly good at festivals too. (If you don't listen to this, at least jump to 16 min and 59 secs for a good chuckle. And a minute earlier for some impressive scratching).

Very interesting. It seems like the shot from the Episode 7 trailer with Luke's hand on R2D2 is at the same moment as what we see in this trailer at 1:30. Looks like Luke in front of a burning Jedi temple

I cant remember correctly where I heard it but is that the place where all of the remaining jedi die except Luke. maybe this explains why there's a scene in the trailer where Kylos men walking away from the temple.

interesting trailer!

what i can see from all the trailers is that donald glover is doing a real good job on playing lando (he really looks like a young version of billy dee williams). on the other hand emilia clarke looks like a version of dakota johnson from shades of grey.
