I don't have many regrets. But getting altitude sickness and having to bail before the Chemicals was one.

Was that your first attempt at a Chemical Brothers gig, Whirly? When was your first show anyway? Missing a Chems show because of sickness has to be devastating. Inchemwetrust almost fell victim in the desert heat, but made an awesome recovery.

It would have been my first attempt, yes. My husband wanted to go to a big rave up so we got tickets to Organic. I knew who the Chems were, had heard their music at clubs and raves, but wasn't all that familiar with them, honestly. We were more familiar with the Orb and my husband was a Meat Beat Manifesto fan so Organic seemed like a good time! I went to one rave type festival before, but never a festival in the mountains. I was exposed to the desert heat and sun earlier that day, was poorly dressed for nighttime in the mountains, and not hanging well with the altitude was the topper. Life's cruel joke is I love the mountains and I've never gotten altitude sick since! How lame is that? :D My first show was Coachella 1999 and it was perfect in every way!

I'm not sure what happened to Den B. He was a nice kid, and he just loved the Chems. He fell out of touch with the forum and he and I emailed a bit for a time. This was quite a few years ago. He had a really talented eye for photography!

You missed Canada in 2002, come with us Tour. Hershey Center Mississauga Ontario. I think the date was in June. i could be mistaken though considering i was there adn it has been what 13 years since?

Redout, thanks for the tip. Found it! And the month was April, from what info I've been provided.

They really toured a lot harder than I initially thought in the late 90's.  They even managed to play Hawaii back in 1997.

The Q101 twisted 6 show in 1999 on December 4th  is an interesting one because they had just played their Brixton sets on the 2nd and 3rd.  And then to come all the way to Chicago to play for a shorten set at this Indoor Alternative Festival (other bands only went 5-6 songs deep on their set list)? Did this really happen? Was it just a DJ set?  I can't really find conformation that they actually played.

Was totally surprised to find that they opened for U2 in back in 2000. Did anybody attend this?

The Chems also dj'd May 30, 2004 in Boston (event was the WBCN River Rave)

As for their opening slot for U2? That would have been interesting to see!

The Chems also did a closed gig for Microsoft. It was in... I want to say 2006 or 2007? I know it happened, I just can't find anything on it right now.

The Chemistry Brothers performed for my friends and I in 2008 in the park by me. I paid them 50 bucks.

Oh, hahahah! I can't believe that site is still around! The guy who ran that site originally (his name was David White I think) was on the old Chems mailing list. My review of Coachella was something I originally posted to the list. Pre-forum days!

It didn't, it was for sure 1994. You maybe found the same great Edge retrospective thing on the show (http://"http://www.orlandoweekly.com/orlando/dance-dance-revolution/Content?oid=2244233"), which mistakenly quotes it as 1993 despite interviewing loads of important people who were there at the time, lol.

It's 1994 because Adam/Tom/Ed in interviews and in the Don't Think booklet confirm that their very first show was at Sabersonic, and that was early 1994. Also they mentioned the crowd going mental as soon as Chemical Beats started up, and Chemical Beats wasn't out until 1994. And yeah they might have had a working demo of Chemical Beats going in 1993, but the crowd wouldn't have recognized it.

'Don't Think' booklet:

Not to be nitpicky, but this only implies that this was there first gig at Weatherall's Club, not necessarily their first gig overall. Thus, leaving open the idea that they could have been done some gigs for awhile.

If you check the website (brianbright.com) where I pulled the flyer from, You'll see that this Brian Bright guy has a lot of Rave/Club flyers from all over Florida, in chronological order. Now, that doesn't necessarily finalize correct date placement, but it's curious how it matches with the Orlando Weekly article.

Additionally, (and this is where it gets supper nerdy)  If you backtrack the dates of July 3rd of 1994, you'll find it falls on a Sunday. Which from a party/rave standpoint does not make since. However, July 3rd of 1993 is a Saturday. This fits perfectly. They probably played at midnight or sometime into the early morning of the 4th. Thus the confusion with the 3rd and 4th.  Boom! Happy Independence Day.

EDIT: and I'm an idiot, I just need to look at the flyer as far as answering the date debate. It's 1994

In retrospect, the last few tours that landed in Denver should have probably gone to Toronto. Maybe they pissed off the Canadian Mounties or were caught smuggling maple syrup on their last visit.

For the next hour and a half, the show was just that -- an even mixture of classic Bowie tunes and drum 'n bass selections from his latest release, Earthling.
Primed by the Chemical Brothers' mind-blowing show, the audience accepted Bowie's electronic efforts, but were clearly more ecstatic when they caught the first bass steps to "Under Pressure," and the signature guitar riffs in the classic classic rock tune "All the Young Dudes" (produced and written by Bowie, but originally recorded by Mott the Hoople). Still, the gut-wrenching rendition of "I'm Afraid of Americans" and the harrowing and heartfelt "Battle for Britain," both from Earthling, showed that Bowie only grows more soulful with time.

the audience was unmoved by the beats and rhythms put out by this British

duo.

The Chemical Brothers seemed to have trouble really interacting with the crowd from behind

their array of samplers and keyboards, all mounted on a riser on the stage.

And let's face it, they're not big on stage presence. If they programmed

computers instead of sequencers, they'd be labeled geeks. Toward the end of

their 40-minute set, the strobes and the free beer had started to seep

through the audience and there was some reaction from the fans on the

floor.

That all changed as Bowie took the stage. Bowie is, of course, a consummate veteran performer, conscious at every moment of the image he is

presenting. The stage included props such as

painted eye-ball balloons about six feet in diameter (which later were

bopped around the audience) and mannequins shaped like alien visitors who

at times had faces projected on them. Long-time Bowie collaborator,

guitarist Reeves Gabrels, was dressed in a kilt. Bowie's outfit was a more

subtle grey shirt and pants, but the spotlight was on him, and he owned

the stage.

The feel of the show was casual and Bowie worked the crowd, often pointing,

waving, shaking hands with the fans who crushed up against the stage. His set didn't vary from the mix of old and new material he's been playing on his current club and theater tour. It featured a mix of songs

from his two most recent albums, Earthling and Outside, as well as some

selections from his '70s catalog including "Scary Monsters" and "Fame." He also

threw in some Velvet Underground covers and his rendition of the Mott

the Hoople anthem he wrote and produced for that group, "All the Young Dudes."

Even during the show, however, eyes kept drifting over to the wings to see

if perhaps Mick Jagger might just drop in to refresh his and Bowie's take

on "Dancing in the Street." When he didn't show, there was a touch of

deconstruction records?

If you look on discogs Justin Robertson's Lionrock was frequently on Deconstruction, including many of the Dust Brothers early remix tracks. But I'm still failing to understand why they would be sponsored by Deconstruction. It should be Junior Boy's Own, right?

Judging by the timeline, I imagine they were still seeking an American Label to sign with to distrubte their soon to be released 'Exit Planet Dust'

Tom's old band Ariel was on Deconstruction too. I think they just had a strong connection with the label having released so many remixes through them / commissioned by them (including the very first Tom/Ed release, the T Baby remix).

Maybe Deconstruction was hoping to court the Tom/Ed into fulling signing with them and part of that involved getting them a few gigs stateside. Especially since they were rapidly outgrowing JBO at the time and looking for a larger label to formally sign with.

If that's the case I definitely imagine Tom vetoed going back to them, since Deconstruction pushed Ariel into going for a more pop sound and had them to hire Sally Ann Marsh in the first place. Gotta avoid label interference.

When did Errol come into play? Be fun to pick his brain about this.

I've attempted to anticipate and predict potential North American dates with very little success. They're VERY selective.

To add, they've been quoted that they don't really wanna do extensive touring anymore. "Been there, done that" kinda thing. They were on Zane Lowe's show back in May when Cali gigs were happening. Zane was poking fun at their US tour, and their reply was pretty coy. It mostly feels like it rests on what Tom wants to do, where Ed maybe just along for the ride at this point. Tom is a family man, so being away from home is taxing for any extended period.

Cost is another factor. The show is a lot more expensive then it was before. I imagine is a bit tough in negotiations with venues/festivals especially outside of Europe. Let's face it, The Chemical Brothers don't exactly bring the $$$ like a young, up-in-coming, artist.

Ultimately, I think they just prefer to play Europe and any new opportunities/markets that weren't available before during their peak through the late 90's.

I do wish they would be a little more blunt with their fans about their willingness/plight to play North America. There's a lot of scattered fans over here that are hoping for a future date, when you could just encourage them that you're strictly focused on costal dates (LA/NY).

If referencing the Calgary and Vancouver dates in October, those were already known and posted in the list.

I remember the Calgary one being advertised in my hometown, Edmonton, when I was 14. Obviously I really wanted to go but couldn't travel the two and a half hours south on the account of being 14. Actionjackson780 and I have talked about that show and how everyone we encounter that went had there mind blown.

As for the Vancouver date, I have to laugh as I now live 2 minutes from it. Heck, I run past it every few days on my workouts. There's a great athletics track and set of football / soccer pitches next to it. Went in there for a craft fair before Christmas. It defiantly has the space to fill a chems show. It's a venue that looks like it's close to a hundred years old meaning harsh sound.

The crew / band departure dates intrigue me with those lists.

Ok with a little extra time on my hands, I went a little further down the rabbit hole. I've might have narrowed on an actual venue for this.

I think it was a French restaurant by day, and a Night Club at night called, 'Louis XIV'. The address is, 606 N. La Brea Los Angeles, California (~half block off of Melrose Avenue). It's been closed for awhile, but from the information I collected, promoters Freddy Be and Mick Cole (The BudBrothers) have ties to London's Heavenly Social. Additionally, Mick Cole was the U.S. manager of Deconstruction's America Label. They even promoted their own "Monday Social" event in L.A., which was inspired by the Heavenly Social. Apparently it's still a popular event, but through a different venue.

This really belongs on the internet archive or wikipedia or something. This message board is great and all but it's not going to be preserved, and has a limited audience.

The truth is, this is just a small piece of the pie. I haven't even touched UK dates or Europe, I'll leave that for someone with more knowledge of the geography and history.

The main reason I wanted to create this thread is to make it as a beacon for those that might have stumbled across our forum and have an old story to tell. As time moves on, these stories fade, so it's nice to have a place to share them before we forget. I'm doing my best to track down these tour dates and organize them, so we can massage whatever broken memories that might be stuck in some peoples head.

LOL. I'm pretty sure Wicked (Sound Clash) is just a residency/label out of San Francisco. Throughout that rave flyer website I have listed, you can see their name/logo pop up in some NY rave flyers "coming from San Francisco" and so forth.

I would imagine if the real Mark Wahlberg was part of this gig, we would have heard about it already.

yeah wicked is a DJ crew here in SF. they are partially responsible for bringing rave culture to the bay area in the early 90s. some of them are still active DJs, and they have an anniversary party here once a year.

Looking at that list, I have been to every NY appearance since 99 with the exception of the 2010 Electric Zoo set (saw them at Ultra Miami instead).

2002   November 2nd - Hammerstein Ballroom, New York City, NY, USA
This show was a bit wild. Audio Bullys, Cassius, and Simian (Mobile Disco) opened. Yes, the Mobile Disco part was in parenthesis because they weren't Simian Mobile Disco (with just Ford and Shaw) yet; it was Simian the entire rock band doing a weird electronic set of their songs and others (I think) on synths, pads, and machines. Hence it was Simian's "mobile disco". Simon Lord was singing. It was similar to what Kevin Parker is doing with Tame Impala Sound System. Actually it's the exact same thing. I don't think I can ever get over how awesome a name Simian Mobile Disco is, btw.

2005   September 16th - Ultra NY, Central Park, New York City, NY, USA
Outdoor set, started in daylight (NY thing, so they end earlier). The visuals crapped out at one point, and I *think* to compensate they just smoked the crowd out with the fog machine every few minutes. I clearly remember during Under the Influence the fog machine just tidal waving over everyone as the bass kicked in; completely enveloped. Couldn't see anything for a good 30 seconds at a clip when they did it. You felt it smashing your face. Loved it.

To comment on your Ultra NY experience,

I absolutely love the full Chemical Brothers visual experience, but I totally think they could scale down and get away with the dirty rave vibe (strobing, smoking, and lazering), without missing much.


Speaking of visuals getting crapped out, it has just about been 10 years since The Chemical Brothers (final?) Coachella performance in 2011. So many mixed emotions that night!

I finally found confirmation that they played Hawaii on June 12th, 1997. This is oddly satisfying to find out because I love to hear about oddball/unlikely tour dates like this.

As you'll see, the show was produced by Goldenvoice and tickets were $18.

Uhhhhh....I haven't seen this before. It's from the tail end of an interview on "The New Music" which was on the Canadian station MuchMusic. The interviewer is Terry David Mulligan who is a known (not well known) tv/radio host and actor.
The interview looks to be prior their May 8, 1997 show at "The Rage" here in Vancouver which is now called the Plaza of Nations or Harbour Events Centre. It's weird cause, I walk past this spot every few weeks.
Interesting to see a young Adam filming the experience...and then nutting Terry David Mulligan.

I'm shocked we never heard detail about a Halloween show in 1997 to this point. That would've been kind of a big deal, I'd imagine. Furthermore, I have nothing (yet) to cross-reference a lot of these dates so there is a chance a few of them got canceled (See Salt Lake City, UT, May 1st of 1997).

Would be awesome to hear from anyone who attended some of these old gigs!

For the record, when the MTV News/Archive was still LIVE, I didn't seek out the website for results. My searches were conducted with a "key word" search via Google, which then linked to me to MTV News/Archive articles. 

That being said, I'm fairly confident I obtained most, if not all, the content regarding dates in North America. It would still be nice to recover the full text articles for posterity.

As you can see in the quoted articles above, I did stumble across details about a 'Organic Festival Tour'. It took place in the United States during the summer of 1997. It was described like an "electronic dance version of Lollapalooza", which at that time, was essentially a traveling rock/alternative festival that would hit major cities across America.

Organic was 96. Could the 'Organic Festival Tour' have been a planned follow-up that never happened?

I really don't have enough info to answer. All I can say is that LA Times article I have linked above leads me to believe that a 1997 iteration of Organic took place.

Well, it's interesting to see there was an attempt to do an electronic festival tour here in the United States. From the names mentioned it looked like it was pretty stacked.

I would guess The Chemical Brothers 1997 headlining Fall Tour must of been a result of the canceling/withdrawal from this unfulfilled "Organic Tour". If it wasn't, that means they were scheduled for a 6+ month tour in North America...  Damn!

I mean that's a RIDICULOUS lineup for the USA. especially in 97 - electronic music was very much not understood here at that time, outside of an underground scene. (a sentiment captured by that LA times article.) Chemical Bros, Prodigy, Orbital. fucking APHEX TWIN. even the remnants of those that didn't cancel, for one show, was better than a lot of lineups here for decades after.

The NME article is inaccurate about it being the only US date. It's actually the 2nd (Played Coachella in April of 2001), and would be the first date (DJ) stateside post- 9/11.

Chems played Centro-Fly at least 3 times where I can reference.

2000 - They DJ'ed at Centro-Fly (https://www.nme.com/news/music/the-chemical-brothers-103-1393956) a few nights before being the opener for U2 at an intimate Irving Plaza concert. Quite a few celebrities were present (for Irving Plaza show), even the notorious Harvey Weinstein (https://www.nydailynews.com/2000/12/07/u2s-concert-draws-the-a-list/).

I lost the address :-[ ...). Furthermore, I have a broken memory that maybe @MadPooter attended this show?

Opening  DJ Liquid Todd for about a 1/2 hour and 2 1/2 hours of Chemical Brothers DJ set...
Notes: Nice audience tape from left hand side of DJ booth. Bass bottoms out a few times here and there, and there is some audience chatter, but otherwise quite enjoyable. 74 minute lenth of original media left some 1-2 minute cuts, so transition between discs is rather rough.

I don't remember a track called strange galaxy. I'll go through some old magazines of the time and see if i can find anything.

This is where I could find an old recording I had taped from an interview Muchmusic (Canada) did with Tom and Ed on the New Music program. It was right before CWU came out and the main interview was on top of a building in Manhattan. There was b-roll of them Djing IBIA and Star Guitar.

I don't know why it sticks out in my mind so clearly. I am wondering if it is possible to comb through Bell Media archives knowing they own all MuchMusic materials.

Totally forgot the Centro-Fly recording is a @boldcaptain special! It throws me off because it's titled "Liquid Todd" (who opened) rather than "Chemical Brothers" or "Centro Fly". Now opening other memories because I believe we commented about this somewhere else in a thread on the archive, I know we gushed about Koenig Cylinders - "Carousel" (https://archive.thechembase.com/Adjusted/index0f3d.html?/topic/3863-track-id-needed-tom-and-ed-please-hel/) and even summoned Ed. Also, themixingbowl.org which I haven't thought of in forever.

Digging for Centro-Fly stuff has let me stumbled across another date in 2004 which I can only reference via the New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/26/movies/pop-and-jazz-guide-946338.html), however it's paywalled. A google search gives me a limited preview of their events page, and basically what I need to see to convince me to confirm it.  It can be cross referenced here (https://lazar.ch/planet-dust/intelligence.htm#New%20York%20Appearance), however being a fan site, it doesn't have specific details beyond the date, location, and broken link to the Centro-Fly website.

So to be clear they played, March 26th in 2004 at Centro-Fly. The club would close at the end of April 2004 where Fatboy Slim assisted (https://bbs.clubplanet.com/topic/219173-centro-fly-closing-party-review/) on its final night. Tom and Ed's 2004 appearance, would seemingly be their final DJ set at this venue.

It was quite good fun catching up with that dj set again!

So many great tunes, it from a golden age from their dj set. Love the way they dropped their exclusive remix of feel the pressure - (still unreleased as far as I am aware) at the wrong speed!

The only unidentified track in this set, the galloping horse track has recently identified by mippio recent on the fourm too!

I might go and listen some more old dj sets for old times sake...
