RIP Sinead. You were a unique character, troubled but not always wrong.
When she tore up the picture of the Pope in 1992 on SNL she shocked America and damaged her career, but the stuff that's come out about the Catholic Church (of which I was a regular parishioner) since then has perhaps proved her right.

Thank you for this post. I remember that incident well and how she was crucified for it. And she didn't back down. I'm so sad over this. She was so troubled and so vulnerable, yet fearless and fierce at the same time. And my God she had the voice of an angel!
I've said it on my own page. I liked a fair share of her music before the SNL event and I didn't understand why she threw her career away. And the media and community went HARD on her. I admit, I was young at the time and didn't understand. I was also in the process of "losing my religion" myself, so in some ways I still thought everyone was hard on her despite not understanding her using her power, fame, and moment for good. I have grown much wiser with experience and perspective, and even by the time the internet age made Wikipedia the one stop shop that it is (for what it is), I went back down the rabbit hole to re-examine and revise my stance.
Part of being in a working society is to reevaluate our decisions, especially as more details or resources become available. I did not understand her braveness or sacrifice at the time, but I certainly agree with her motivation and applaud her for being ahead of her time in every way.
Since Wolkenkrabber left the title of thread open-ended, I hope you don't mind me assuming this is now the designated "in memoriam" thread...
Pee-Wee Herman, aka Paul Reubens has passed.
My inner-child is so badly weeping. :'(
True story, I was supposed to see Pee-Wee's Big Adventure Anniversary Tour Live w/Paul Reubens on March 19, 2020. It was an early birthday present. Obviously, it got cancelled.
If your not familiar who this is, please go and check out the very wacky "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" movie. Try and watch it through the eyes of a child, and please weigh the amazement and horror kids felt while watching this. I think it still holds up as a quality flick.

RIP Robbie Robertson.
For those unfamiliar, he was the main songwriter with The Band, and thus involved with Bob Dylan. The Band's concert film The Last Waltz is pretty famous (and mentioned by Tom Rowlends once in an "Ask Tom" quiz). Oh and Robertson also collaborated with Martin Scorsese fourteen times scoring films such as Raging Bull, Casino, The Departed and Wolf Of Wall Street. Robertson's wikipedia page is looong.

R.I.P.
The Pogues were a big part of my soundtrack back in the 80's and early 90's. Fairytale of New York is on classic holiday rotation in my corner of the world, though my favorite Shane MacGowan duet (probably favorite duet of all time) is the one he did did with Sinead, Haunted 💔

This one is favorite of mine.
Not because of the song but for the video.

Rest in peace.

^ Fairytale Of NY was released in'88. As a school kid I caught the Pogues at Dublin's Point Depot (now Three Arena) in December '88. The stage was kitted out like a giant kitchen, as though that's where the real Christmas party was at - Jonah Lewie would have been impressed. Fairytale was new, so I was able to just enjoy it along with the rest of the gig. I've got to admit that in recent years I've grown weary of the song. It's impossible to go Christmas shopping in Dublin withut hearing that tune piped through the speakers of every. single. shop.
By the time I caught The Pogues again, at London's Brixton Academy - another December gig, I think in 2004 (https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-pogues/2004/carling-academy-brixton-london-england-3395a8f5.html), you could tell that a lot of people were just waiting for that song. Me? I was more interested in A Pair Of Brown Eyes, Fiesta, A Rainy Night in Soho, The Irish Rover and Dirty Old Town.
So it's nice to hear Nick Cave doing one of those songs. The Pogues had more than one song and I would hate for people to just think of them as the "Irish Christmas song guys".
Incidentally the guy with the beard (that makes him look old)! singing Fairytale in the above clip is Glen Hansard AKA Outspan (guitarist) from The Commitments (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101605/) AKA the main Guy from Once (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0907657/?ref_=nm_knf_c_1) (I only got around to watching this recently -it's good!) AKA lead singer of The Frames (https://www.discogs.com/artist/257023-The-Frames). Their 2001 album, For The Birds (recorded with Steve Albini, known for his work with Pixies, PJ Harvey and Nirvana) is worth a listen, if you like rock/indie/folk.

Two different worlds here. That song is not part of any public radio Christmas rotation, here. It might as well be considered a hidden gem. The use of "slut" and "faggot" in the lyrics are a little too heavy to be played along side Mariah Carey or "Wonderful Christmastime". And it's too bad, because the magic, like many Pogues tracks, is the beautiful instrumental outro. That song has put a lump in my throat long before the passing of Shane MacGowan.
The complete lack of English Christmas music in the states is sometimes crazy to me. I have a 3CD Christmas Hits compilation from back home and my wife was absolutely baffled by how much festive music we have that she'd never heard before.
The absolute worst fate for American holiday music enjoyers, is that most have never heard Chris Rea's 'Driving Home For Christmas'.

Oh that's sad news. She still had a dance show on Radio 1 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006wkp7/episodes/player) right up to December - where you can see she did some "Best of 2023" shows. She was Radio 1s longest serving broadcaster. Used to play punk and indie stuff back in the 80s, then moved to dance music, fully embraced the Nu Skool Breaks scene (amongst others) and released a couple of mix or compilation albums (https://www.discogs.com/artist/701664-Annie-Nightingale?superFilter=Releases&subFilter=Compilations). She even managed to get the "Grey Clouds" version of The Orb's Little Fluffy Clouds released (via her 2007 Y4k Breaks CD). A huge influence on other music broadcasters and yes she had connections to The Chems and also The Primals via her son Alex. RIP Annie - always likable, always into the music.

Steve Albini has died
For those not familliar with his work, he was one of the most famous producers of the past 40 years. He produced classics like Pixie's "Surfer Rosa", PJ Harvey's "Rid of Me", Nirvana's "In Utero", Bush's "Razorblade Suitcase", Manic Street Preachers "Journal for Plague Lovers" and many many more

one of the most modest too. he insisted on being referred to as a sound engineer rather than a producer, and not having an overbearing influence on other people's music. interesting guy. RIP.
That surprised me, it was 30 year anniversary of in utero few months ago and he, dave and krist talked about making of that album (was it with conan? can't remember).
He seemed fine, but looks are deceiving.
Incidentally, I used to frequent one forum that steve used to posted on and was a witness to his huge homophobic rant.
I always liked his work, him as a person not so much.

I got into Pixies before Nirvana, and by the time they came along I was a little reluctant to jump on the bandwagon - they just seemed like a less witty/fun version of Pixies. But In Utero was the album that won me over. It was many years later before I actually bought Nevermind, and I was pleasantly surprised.
Anyway, I have been mostly unaware of Albini's pronouncements or opinions. The first comments by him that I paid particular attention to were as recent as June of last year. An 18-tweet thread which made a lot of sense to me (and discusses backmasking which, these days is a benign part of dance/electronic music, although Albini probably wasn't a fan).

Certainly this thread spoke to me in relation to the anti-vxxers and their unproven alternatives.
"Just take Ivermectin + Vitamin D. That's the real Covid cure!"
"Proof? Hey prove me I'm wrong", they said.
So then actual scientists had to do research on Ivermectin and Vitamain D just...to prove the anti-vaxxers wrong. The same anti-vaxxers who said Covid was caused by 5G phone masts, and that Bill Gates wanted to inject everybody with microchips. Jesus wept!
As for the homophobic stuff, I just googled "Steve Albini Homophobic"
And found this NME article (https://www.nme.com/news/music/joe-rogan-should-step-the-fuck-up-like-insane-clown-posse-says-steve-albini-3157508)
Sort of a two parter where Albini praises Insane Clown Posse for owning their shit:
QuoteViolent J: "I was that stupid. I didn't understand the offensiveness in that. I was legit that stupid [...]I honestly can't tell you what the fuck was happening in my brain."
He added: "We were also crazy homophobic back in the day. And now my daughter says, 'Dad why did you say this?' And I say, 'Because your dad was a fucking fool'."
And suggests Joe Rogan should similarly own his own shit
And the second part (with a link to an earlier article (https://www.nme.com/news/music/steve-albini-speaks-out-on-his-past-edgelord-behaviour-3093018)) is about Albini also "owning his own shit" and looking back on his "ignorance". Maybe he improved as a person as he got older? Mind you, the stuff about touting his friends child porn magazine in 1978 kinda broadsided me.

As one who's really into the original Star Wars trilogy (and Rogue One), i'm sorry to hear about the passing of James Earl Jones :(
Yeah. This was a real sad one. Mufasa too - an iconic voice and presence in film history for sure.
Another extremely sad RIP for me personally, is the shocking news of Danielle Moore's passing. She was the singer of Crazy P / Crazy Penis. I met her a handful of times and she was always so lovely, so full of energy, and she totally elevated the bands music when she joined the band for their second album.
I think this is the first musician passing that has really hit me - both as someone I had met but also who's music has made up a huge part of my life.
She will be missed.

One of my all time favourite rock drumers has died - Clem Burke of Blondie. I didn't even know he was ill. Blondie played Glastonbury in 2023, and there was Clem behind the kit. Today we find out he had cancer. It's not yet clear how long he had been suffering.
I was lucky enough to catch Clem with Blondie a couple of times when they reformed in the early 2000s (yes youngsters, Blondie was a band not a solo artist) - once at Hammersmith Apollo and once at a festival.
Parallel Lines is one of my all time favourite albums by any artist. A perfect concoction of New York punk, pop and disco. Every song a banger.
This has really caught me off guard and hit me hard. RIP Clem.

So long Sly, R.I.P.
Quote from: Bosco on Jun 09, 2025, 22:07So long Sly, R.I.P.
Ahh, the time I kinda sorta
almost saw Sly Stone live...
The year was 2007, the place was Lovebox Festival in London's Victoria Park.
The time was 9pm...but then it was 9:50pm.
We had heard "mixed" reports about this comeback tour from Sly and the new "Family Stone".
We waited for the band to start - they did so nearly 50 minutes late. And with no sign of Sly.
Around three tracks in, the friend I was with said: "we've got a 2nd day of this festival tomorrow. May as well beat the crowd out the gates and on to the tube so that we can get home and recuperate in time for Day 2. Sly can't even be bothered to come on stage".
That all made sense, plus I didn't want to be left on my own, so I said "yeah ok", and off we went.
I definitely remember tracks 1 & 2 in the setlist (https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/sly-and-the-family-stone/2007/victoria-park-london-england-53d99ba1.html), so it must have been during track 3 that we decided to leave.
According to this Uncut review (https://www.uncut.co.uk/features/sly-and-the-family-stone-at-lovebox-london-40981/) Sly wandered on stage during track 4. I must have missed him by a matter of seconds.
Did I ever get another chance to see him? Nope. Do I regret not sticking around? Yep.
If the guy had just had the decency to come on stage for opener, Dance To The Music, I would have a different story to tell. I blame Sly!
He (they?) was certainly an influential artist - with over 1000 listings on WhoSampled.
One of these days I intend to properly dig into his back catalogue - something I might have done sooner if I didnt harbour a bit of a grudge against the guy.
Some other artists who I'm pleased I managed to catch while they were alive are:
Prince (2007). I caught two shows from his month-long residency at the O2 arena. The tickets were all priced at £31.21 -regardless of the seat. Why? Because he had an album out called 3121. Not making this up. He played loads of hits. Loved It.
David Bowie (2003), Wembley Arena, "A Reality Tour". God he was good. His voice during Ziggy Stardust and Heroes was really something. He looked fit and well. Engaged with the crowd, gave it his all. The next year he had a heart attack and never toured again.
Rory Gallagher, Dublin, a very long time ago. I got dragged along to this by a school friend; didn't regret it. A fantastic blues rock guitarist. If you've never heard of him, well your favourite guitarist certainly has, whether that's The Edge, Johnny Marr or Jack White.
The White Stripes, Alexandra Palace, 2004 or 2005. OK they're not dead, but the band is. It was everything I could have wanted from a White Stripes gig. They graduated to the O2 Arena after that, but their O2 gig never happened - because they split up.
Back to Sly, Here's a track I bought as a 12" white label, with no artwork or artist name on it at all. It has a discogs listing (https://www.discogs.com/release/3012329-Medicine8-Stupid-Monkey) for a 7" release with artwork (same track length), and is credited to Medicine 8. I think my 12" pre-dated the 7" but I can't swear to it - there's no listing for it. Using Charles Manson for vocals was um, brave, but it does work, IMHO.

And more specifically aim for their more melancholic work as it might unveil the cathartic bond that so many people have with their music. Maybe you'll even find a common ground with your elders,

I bought this white label back in '99/'00.
Discogs: South Coast - Surfin' (https://www.discogs.com/release/3336338-South-Coast-Surfin)
At the time, these sort of bootleg/mashups were quite exciting. You knew they probably weren't legal and that you were getting something a little bit 'unique' that some people would never own or even know about. This was in the days before Soundcloud and YouTube.
I guess the "South Coast" moniker was a reference to Fatboy Slim and the Big Beat Boutique - based in Brighton on the UK's south coast.
Listening back now, it would be better without the "funk soul brother" sample. And I'd like the vocal to be less chopped up and repetitious. But there was a good idea in here somewhere. And back in '99, Big Beat was still hanging in there, so it wasn't as 'naff' to do a big beat remix as it would be now.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SXFzlFI07E
I would be remiss if I didn't reshare this classic which showed up in my YouTube feed again:
There's a lot of Beach Boys I really don't have much respect for but Good Vibrations, Pet Sounds, and the Smile Sessions are some of the most gorgeous statements in the history of pop music as an art.
Hearing The Orb put God Only Knows over Little Fluffy Clouds in Chicago in 2015 was pretty fucking transcendent.
