Title: Weval
Post by: Ben_j on Jul 29, 2025, 15:57
I'm surprised there was not a topic yet for that dutch duo. They've released 3 albums and are about to release the 4th one, and so far all tracks from it are awesome :

The only dutch duo everybody should know are Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo  ;D

Someday sounds interesting. Are they on Kontor? The thumbnail from the last vid suggests it

Love Weval!

When they toured live here a few years ago I headed out to see them at August Hall here in San Francisco (a concert venue that occupies the former Ruby Skye space). Details were not available on what time the show would start nor if there was an opening act, which usually makes me grumpy. When they had not yet started past 11 pm I was doubting how long I would even last - I was tired before I even got there. I think they started around 11.30 pm and played until 1 am. The set list consisted almost entirely of parts of their discography I was not familiar with.

And it was fucking awesome. They wiped out any bad mood I had going in, and I felt enthused and revived leaving after.

This is the song that first caught my attention. I heard it thrown into a few DJ mixes a while back and had to seek it out. Turns out I'd already listened to a bit of Weval via Spotify's Discover Weekly recommendations, but they hadn't really clicked yet. After this, I paid closer attention.

(Might also fit in the 'deceptively good tracks' thread, come to think of it...)

The way I discovered them was a bit weird. I was looking for informations on an unreleased Boards of Canada track, for which we have a 1mn excerpt:

and I can't remember if it was a Youtube comment or Reddit comment that said "hey, that track by Weval kinda sound similar". It was "Out of the Game":

I didn't think it sounded very similar to the BoC track but I loved it and looked for more Weval tracks.

Love the new single, Movement.

The music video? Less so. It loops three times, seemingly randomly and, for a song that is about moving and, according to Weval themselves, a video that is about how great dancing is... Why on earth wouldn't you have it IN TIME with the music? I will never understand out of sync dancing in a music video, unless it's some kind of Thom Yorke interpretive swaying. It's just baffling. It lessens the effect of both the music and the visual.

Still. Very excited for the new album. Everything so far has been killer.

Thanks for recommending this band. Loving the sound of these examples. Those analogue synthies are pleasing to listen to, as well as the drums and layers.

Yeah. But wouldn't you say this video captures the average dancing style of the people around you on an average night out pretty well? :D

The style? Absolutely! Can totally see myself using some of the moves.

But what music is he dancing to? Because it isn't the song. And that's the problem for me. Watching muted it looks good! Though again, the loop? They didn't film any more content? Or other b-roll? Genuinely baffling choice IMHO.

Haven't listened to the full album yet but excited to dive in!

OK. New album slaps.

Only lower than 8/10 moment in there for me was MERCATOR, which was still a vibe and a nice sonic/energy detour before closing with FREE (which I love as a choice! I feel like this would usually be a track 3 or 4).

Anyone else reminded of Sidewinder (312 vs 216 Stomp Mix) with the synth in HEAD FIRST?
