Just posted on Brotherhood, this is Dig Your Own Hole, Setting Sun, Chemical Beats, an interview about frying eggs off Ed's chest and Canada, and The Private Psychedelic Reel live from Glastonbury 1997!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cb8_L60riqY
I'm pretty sure this is the most footage I've ever seen from a show older than the full Woodstock set.
What else is out there?
EDIT: Some of the Das Spiegel / A Modern Midnight Conversation visuals can be seen in Dig Your Own Hole here! Geez!
Lol @ "We love Canada"
when was the last time they played there?
2002.
It's downright insulting!
I've given up on seeing them in my home and native land and decided just to travel to see them. Mind you I've been on about it for 11 years now...
that Setting Sun live recording...

I can't recognize any word that they're saying in interview. ;D
:) Awesome early footage , great versions of Dig Your Own Hole & Setting Sun :)
Nice rare footage, too bad the editing is rather... Let's say epileptic, some times :D
And there are some stutters here and there in the video :( I'd love the original video file if anyone can find it

i'd love those old visuals, but have to say that in my memories the guy dancing with guns was in the music:response visuals. think about that.

I don't think this has been found online before. It's pretty similar to Leicester but definitely unique, not mislabeled. This brings our total number of '95 recordings from 3 to 4!

I've got an bootleg from '96 on my harddrive, saying it is from lollipop festival 1996, but can't confirm this. Sounds mostly the same and it's awesome. It's where i first have heard the session "brothers gonna work it out (vocals)" => "Dust Up Beats" => "Loops Of Fury" => "Best Part Of Breaking Up" and "Prescription Beats" and it's the best opening i've ever listen to from the brothers - that's why i mentioned it always in the "setlist of your dreams"-threads
Yeah the Lollipop gig is legendary. Only known performance of Get Up On It Like This. But it's a 1996 set, we only had Brixton, Leicester and Roskilde from 1995 before.

Definitely 1995. You can date most sets by the tracklist which stays roughly the same per year. They play Life is Sweet in this set, which they had abandoned by 1996. And in 1996 they started playing Dig Your Own Hole tracks.

The Starship Universe sign looks like a sign for the tent/stage rather than the name of the festival. That's my guess anyway. You can also see that the sign has sponsorship from MUZIK magazine which ran from 1995-2003. All of their back issues can be viewed online HERE (http://www.muzikmagazine.co.uk/).
Issue No1 actually has the Chems on the front cover. The interview inside was reproduced by The Guardian newspaper last year to mark the Chems 20th anniversary. There is no mention of this festival in the interview.
I'm guessing that MUZIK probably would have mentioned/reviewed this thing at some point, so if you're really keen, you could probably look through all of the issues until you find it...

That's interesting. Maybe it's worth a try contacting ARTE, the French and German TV collaboration that broadcasted this. Maybe they still have it in their archieves or at least know its date and specific festival name.

Aww, that's so fun to scroll through. It's like a nostalgic time travel, the hair styles, clothes, the sun glasses, even the magazine fonts and all.
That chems article on page 54 is fun to read too.
QuoteThe dyniamic quality of the Chemical Brothers' music is not in doubt. But it could be said that there's not a lot of elbow room for any soul.
ED: "I don't think that's true at all. What do you want us to do? Get Luther Vandross to sing with us? A lot of our music is pretty brutal, but I'd say that it has far mor soul, more fire and passion than most so-called soul records

Darren Price (frequent UW collaborator) has released part of a live DJ set from a 1994 opening slot for Underworld. It's a really cool old school set.
https://www.mixcloud.com/DarrenPrice/vinyl-dj-set-astoria-oct-1994-underworld-live/
Now note the flyer - support from The Dust Brothers. October 1994. Never heard word of this show before - but the Chems were playing their early 35 minute sets back then.
And in the description, Pricey says: "Dust Bros and Darren (Emerson) coming soon"
Guys, we might be getting the first audio of a 1994 live performance, ever. Besides Exit Planet Dust, of course.
There's a chance it's just a DJ set, but even those are fun to hear.

Oldest if you don't count Song to the Siren / Three Little Birdies Down Beats on Exit Planet Dust, which was from their first (probably) show in March 1994.
Great spot on the Sandals remix - that's one of those remixes I've only heard once or twice. A lot of the early 94-95 remixes were made from parts of discarded tracks from Exit Planet Dust. Tow Truck especially. So in this set those parts may not have been a "remix" yet, but just an unfinished song they had knocking around.

That's cool, I had no idea. I always thought their remixes from that time had more in common with each other than any one did with the original songs, so that makes some sense!

Wow! So they played Got Glint somewhere during 2004/2005 tour?!
Recently I found my old chemical brother archive of various bits and bobs. Thought I'd lost my file I've collected over the years but they turned up on an old hard drive!
Found a video I put together of random live video I made 12 years ago, all mixed into a cohesive 2 hour set. I was never particularly happy with the overall quality of the video.i ditched this project to make the live 07/08 dvd which is on my YouTube channel. But some might enjoy, plenty of old footage!
https://youtu.be/P6znF8uUWuA
Sneaks, I'm sure you have your reasons for not being fully satisfied with your 'lil project. But from my standpoint, it's fucking fantastic! I'm only a few tracks in and already being beamed back to my early Chems years. The transitions so far are just superb, it must have taken you hours to get it to that level I presume. Thanks for sharing, I'm glad you rediscoverd that gem!
Ah sweet! Was excited to see an update for my subscription to you on YouTube, Sneaker!
Love your editing right from the start with the PtB animations/graphics!
cheers guys
The problem i have with the video is it lacks a certain authenticity. The transitions at the beginning i had to mix. I had no audio source for Galvanize at the beginning of the set, so i had to create it. Galvanize into Do it again i had to create, Do it again into Get yourself high again I had to mix. All these transitions i had to create which i think takes away from creating the audio to a live chemical brothers show.

I remember it was the second track they played from that show and remember being fixated on that specific visual (and the CB visual as well) because it was such a highlight and a visual trigger that brings memories of that show. If it's not Tribal Gathering then where is it? Do you still think it mght be the Astoria?
Take a look at a couple of photos Here. (http://www.londonvenueguide.com/london-astoria.html) You can see it had a downstairs and a tiered upstairs area. Looking at your video upload circa 5.10 - 5.33, there's a long look out over the crowd. There's no sign of any upstairs area. Instead it looks to me like a big long, one-floor ?permanent? structure/venue. Or a HUGE tent. [EDIT: I can see massive tent poles. It's a HUGE tent!]
There is also lots of video footage of various bands playing live at the Astoria if you search "live at Astoria".
I remember seeing LCD Soundsystem, Primal Scream, Alabama 3 and The Gossip there myself. I think I watched all those gigs from the upstairs area. No need for me to mention the bands really, I'm just name dropping now!
P.s. You know why The Astoria was demolished? To make way for the expansion of a frickin train station. The venue first opened in 1927. It should have had "listed" protection and been done up instead of being demolished. For shame.
It's a tent at Tribal Gathering:

I remember seeing LCD Soundsystem, Primal Scream, Alabama 3 and The Gossip there myself. I think I watched all those gigs from the upstairs area. No need for me to mention the bands really, I'm just name dropping now!
P.s. You know why The Astoria was demolished? To make way for the expansion of a frickin train station. The venue first opened in 1927. It should have had "listed" protection and been done up instead of being demolished. For shame.
Yes the photos were added by me.
I for sure see the tent entrances now that I watch the reup again. but again I don't think its tribal gathering considering the lack of Life is sweet(R1). Imma browse the setlist website to see what venues line up.
Imma change the thumbnail to prevent anymore confusion until this gets sorted out.
Here's the Tribal gathering audio

Glastonbury 2000 will be on BBC Four on June 27th:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000kjk1?fbcliddI
Yep just seen that! Duration of the transmission is 50 minutes. The dvd we got 40 minute duration on the Glastonbury dvd last year. I wonder if they have another few minutes of footage? I'm kinda hoping it will be broadcast in the original 4:3 aspect I didn't like the dvd with its cropped frame to make it wide-screen
Cool! Only got a 55 min cut (and a partly corrupted one I just noticed)! Could you lovely UK peeps record this, please?

The page says 1h 29min or am I missing something? And yeah, the original aspect ratio would be appreciated as it would preserve the image's quality.
On the guide on my TV it says it's on 22.20 till 23.10
Ah, damn. So they confused the set running time with their broadcasting (their other Glasto stated schedules are matching though). It makes kind of sense since my audio copy is also just ~54 minutes long. Too bad. But at least we could get in better quality.

please, please =]
I will rip it from BBC iPlayer with the help of my trusty VPN
Just watching radiohead's 1997 glastonbury performance on the iPlayer. Glad to see it's in original 4:3 ratio. I reckon Saturdays chems 2000 set will look better than what we got on the surrender dvd last year
Unfortunately one of my chems dvd I have uploaded to YouTube has been removed by the bbc as it has the 2000 Glastonbury footage
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49tijgHp4bU found The Pills by accident!

That intro/transition is bonkers!
From STTS straight to Chemical Beats :( well at least that's one track that wasn't on the DVD, but it would have been so good to have The Sunshine Underground...
This is frustrating me. It makes me think in the bbc archive they filmed the entire set. In 2000 the bbc aired hey boy, music response, block rockin and the reel. Then last year we get the dvd with song to the siren, influence and leave home in addition. And now they dig out chemical beats! I'm feeling short changed on the surrender dvd right now.
I still have hope that the iPlayer version will be full. It says 1h30 after all
And at least the quality is better than the DVD
extra bonus footage! We got at least 3 minutes of Ed's fag break!
Got the iPlayer download, it's the same as the broadcast :( 49mn. It's 720p/50fps
I've started experimenting with video enhancement software, and the results are encouraging. For example, here's the enhanced video of Music Response at Benicassim 2004:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAJF5DDh3FU
and here's the original:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPjgCfsOs5A
EDIT: replaced with the 50fps version
that looks cool. how did you do this? software & hardware please
I'm redoing this, but this time I added frame interpolation to 50fps first. Which makes the visuals look weird because I'm pretty sure they were 25 or 30 fps initially, and would not looks as fluid even in real life
Quote from: ThePumisher on Jun 29, 2020, 13:00

I'm making the frame interpolation with DAIN https://github.com/baowenbo/DAIN
And the upscaling with Topaz video enhance AI, but I might try with ESRGAN https://github.com/xinntao/ESRGAN
EDIT:
Forgot about hardware: RTX 2080Ti and even with that, it's very slow (took 2 hours to interpolate the 4mn video and an hour to upscale it)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmkljTbdYc0
Spoiler
Original for comparison:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pABUrxlyyU
Enhanced Glastonbury 2004. This one's still a bit blocky, but it was a tough one. I think it was ripped off VHS at some point, in the wrong aspect ratio, with black bars, and might have been converted from interlaced to non interlaced at some point, which gived those horizontal artifacts. I didn't convert to 50fps because it takes waaaay too much time (would have taken more than one day for this one).
Anyway, still an improvement over the original!
My next projects are:
- Glastonbury 2000, merging the Surrender 20 DVD and BBC broadcast footage to make the longest version possible
- Fuji 2002, again using both the footage sneaker just posted on the other thread and the Singles 93-03 DVD footage to have an uninterrupted video
Look pretty good again! The source material was in a pretty poor state and I botched that edit together. Really wish I had the original source download and VHS tape kicking around. It
I like your idea on the Fuji rock, was thinking that edit needs to be done. Will your process cope with that ghosting motion effect on the rip I have of Fuji rock?

I went too quick and forgot that deinterlacing could result to twice as much frames, but it's not the default setting. The Glasto04 footage should be 50fps, so I have to do it all over again :(

What is your algorithm?
I recommend making this like:
1. 100% size DeNoise/Deblock to lossless tiffs.
2. Glue tiffs to lossless video.
3. Double size enhance (like 1280x720) to lossless tiffs.
4. Glue tiffs to lossless video.
5. Double size enhance (2K, 4K - is not the deal in this case) to lossless tiffs.
6. Glue tiffs to lossless video.

Pretty much, yes. The software does it all and treats each frame individually. There are different models to choose from, I use the "Gaia CG" model, which is originaly made for CGI, but it's what works best I think. It gets rid of the noise pretty well.
I think it's better to work step by step, resolution to resolution with Gaia HQ profile. And of course enhance to lossless format.

Okay honestly. 2002 was their best setlist and tour hands down. I think you could maybe make an argument that 07/08 and 2011 had better sets but I dunno dude.
Ah that UTI version. I remember seeing a studio version of this mix on Youtube but I don't find it anymore, maybe my memory is wrong and there are only live recordings of this version?
Also, Africa must've been a beast live!
What a full on show , crowd really appreciating it too. Love the visuals for Star Guitar in the 2002 era , double-silhouetted head and Kaleidoscopic stars , perfect. Afrika as well , must've been a great track to experience live.

I'm going to put together a video of a complete 2002 show with the best sound and footage possible, using the recently published Sydney concert video, the Open Air Field audio and the Fuji Rock and Bizarre Festival videos.
If anyone has any other good quality audio/video from 2002 in mind, that would greatly help, but as far as I can tell, this is the best material that's available.
Also, there's a dilemma: keep My Elastic Eye, with crappy video and audio, and lose the incredible segue between The Test and TPPR (which has to be my favourite one ever) or cut it out, keep the segue and the beautiful video?
Do you plan on KI-enhancing that like you did with footage in another thread?

keep it, since its a part of the setlists. thats what I do when I compiled the yearly supersetlists for 2007/08, or try to find better audio and insert it over the crappy one.

The editing is going well, I tackled most of the difficult parts (matching the videos to the sound, and cutting some parts to match the inconstant transitions like The Test => TPPR or the end of the show.

Yeah, that's weird! I expected to maybe see/hear My Elastic Eye, since it is wrongfully listed on some setlist website (https://www.concertarchives.org/concerts/open-air-field-festival-2002). The way it's edited in the audio is pretty seamless, I never suspected something was cut. In the same vein, the Bizarre Festival shows "Got Clint" (sic) during the transition from The Test to TPPR, so it was probably cut from there too.
Sooo... Would everyone hate me if I pushed back the premiere time half an hour or an hour because I forgot there was a rugby game between France and Wales starting one hour before? :-[

So, I don't know if 2011 now qualifies as "past" live footage (it is 10 years old, after all), but some of you might remember a certain someone had a full show from 2011, up on Vimeo, and inadvertently left it in public. I managed to snatch it before it was shut down, but sadly 3 tracks were corrupted at some point (Swoon, Escape Velocity and TPPR). Now I just found out some of those videos are still up on Vimeo, and could get Swoon again. Sadly, TPPR and Escape Velocity are not there. I messaged the channel owner, asking if he could put them back up or public, but I don't expect any miracle.
Benj congratulations on making this 2002 video, it's fantastic
So this is what Ben has been working on.
Things I liked:
1)The transition from BRB to STTS! Never gets old.
2)The beginning of OOC was crazy btw. IMO I prefer this dated visual over the silhouetted one. Simplicity!
3)The straightforward/non-transition into the Fuji footage!
(Serious question: When the curtains open up from the middle during OOC,would you say that this would be the first time the Chems did a 'widescreen'? I think this is the earliest footage where the Chems gave the first 'full' screen treatment, in which all other future shows now incorporate.)
4) THE BEST PART! The end of Setting Sun where it seques into Elektrobank beats, and zooms in into Tom's face, and Tom's fucking with the delay effect. Then he slightly opens his mouth like a sigh of relief, and throws his hands up as if he was saying 'Do you want more?'
5) Seeing the crowd getting down to TPPR! Just remembering back at those times and how simple and humble it once was.
The only think I wished for was more footage from Coachella. But then again, were weren't as glued to our phones back then as we are today.
Overall I enjoyed your Frankenweenie of a video sir!

theres the VHS tape from Crotor that came out last year, I can loan you a superset I plan on releasing for 1997 on the Archive that you can use to dub over the footage.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yclUNGDLozI&ab_channel=CrotorMcCrotor
I would imagine syncing any different audio source up to a VHS video is going to be a nightmare. I guarantee the audio would be noticeable out of synch in a matter of minutes
The 97 VHS bootleg stands on it own, if that was to be edited with new audio sources it would loose some of its authenticity. The greatest thing about that video is seeing and hearing Tom working that mixing desk. And for that reason alone I don't think you could over dub it.
But if anyone wants to try try and make something up with the stuff that is out there then I love to see the results

Nice work Ben! Now I wanna do the same but with several eras (like my best ofs playlists).

Yeah that's what I planned on using as the main footage. And I have full Glasto 1997 audio already
The synchronisation is indeed looking like it will be a nightmare :D There's a lot more jam and improv on the New York set than on Glastonbury, and even when the track is played exactly the same, it's out of sync by about a second at the end of the track, so I'll have to figure something out to fix this.
Tonight I've also been reviewing footage from 99/2000 and the next project will probably be putting together Glastonbury 2000 and Woodstock 1999. I'll probably need an anti-boobs filter ::)
I've not used Ableton much in my life but have used it in the past to sort out tempo issues on these video projects.
If you had an audio track of the VHS video and used that as a template could you add a second track, for example glastonbury 97 audio nd warp it to match? Might be very time consuming but it should do the job.

Interesting. The Open Air audio recording I have has Got Glint cut out. After the Test fades out, it's immediately followed by the Reel and the segue between them is also edited it seems. Interesting.
Never knew that there was something cut from the recording. 90 minutes is their standard festival set time, so it never occurde to me that there might be more. There's a voiceover announcing the radio station (?) several times during the recording, so probably it got cut in order to not exceed a program time slot?
Open Air Fields is such an amazing recording and one of my top "wish I'd been there" concerts.
I'm really looking forward to watching Benjs video edit! :)

Hahaha. I love Tom's indignation.
Yes, this was a bit of a diplomatic misunderstanding, I guess. The poor guy most certainly meant "sample". Or Tom felt he got caught :D
QuoteBut, like the small-time criminals in the corner who occasionally stare over at us twits, the Chemical Brothers are most definately petty thieves. They don't bother to pay for the rights to much of what they sample. Somewhere on their new album, they explain, is a snatch from a famous classic-rock song, though they refuse to say which classic-rock song.
"I guarantee you," Ed Simons says, "we could play that track for ten of the top musicologists in the world, -and- the guy who actually played the music originally, and none of them would be able to figure it out."

does the london 05 set even exist in full? i remember whitenoise mentioning there was some recording that cut before close your eyes or something of that nature but i've never seen anything really pop up, unless it's the BBC ones already online
To be honest, I'd never questioned whether it was complete until you mentined it. I've got the set split into 2 files that add up to about 105 min and ends with the Reel. Couldn't imagine where Close Your Eyes would fit in there. The only time I'm aware of where they played CYE is the Live 05 promo EP. But I'm not sure at which concert it was featured (my hunch is it was recorded at a UK show so London do would make sense).

my theory is that it was added super late into the tours (like with Problem:Question & Wonders of the Deep. so my theory was that played maybe as an interlude between HTL & the reel. or fully replaced HTL)
Found this strange clip of Believe with a bunch of Vegetable Vision visuals??? Is this released anywhere officially?
Also I see some stuff that could very well be the source of those MAH forest visuals too

Most of the visuals on the video are used by Animal Track/Hoops (02-04)/Believe/MAH/OOC/BRB/WATN/UTI-IDM and the Love is All outro sequence; it's nice to see these visuals on a full screen, especially the WATN one.
(Also I think most of the running person visual throughout the video was unused, maybe it was taken off by a website we don't know???)

A lot of the camera tracking visuals I'm assuming were unused but others were used in Believe and Out Of Control most likely, all were definitely filmed by Adam and co.
There was a clip of Hold Tight London live I posted pages back which seems to imply some clips were used for that visual, the train ones were reused for BRB rather recently, and the yellow rays I'm assuming were for Golden Path, if not in '05 then definitely '07

Okay I know I always mainly post here trying to scour for more footage from the 04/05 tours I HOPE I can contribute way more with Chemical 10 on the horizon but I wanted to ask...
I've been considering putting together a film of sorts like what some fans have done for other Chems concerts (namely 2011) to put together like...a hypothetical video of the Push The Button tour and was wondering if some forumites would like to chip in?
I found some good resources on YouTube but are there any leads on the forum that could be of use that people have captured before? I wanna see if I could put everything together, including professional footage and sync it up to a bootleg...I haven't decided which set yet or which year either but I'll figure it out (it'll likely be 2005)
I hope I can be able to put it all together this year!

I thought about it, after doing the 2002 one but it's going to be difficult. The only "professional" 2005 footage is Live at Isle of MTV and the rips that exist are in pretty bad quality (and that concert was not a typical 05 tour setlist, some stuff was truncated for TV). Using only footage from the crowd could be a lot of work, and it was at a time where not a lot of people filmed or posted online, so good luck to get a complete concert.
Using a complete 2005 recording from radio for the audio, the Isle of MTV footage as a base video, and filling the gaps with crowd footage might work
EDIT: I forgot about the ~10mn Werchter footage and the Rock am Ring. That's something. And the Glastonbury 2004 footage could also be used I guess

No one was bedazzled by timely choreographed or sleekly synchronized visuals, it was mind-bending music that thrilled the known and mystified the unknown. Regret not having the ability or mindset to be take part of a concert from the earlier part of their career.

I've had this uploaded on YT for years now. It's from the Japan only Fujirockers DVD released in '08. I'm unsure if this is from the '04 or '07 Fuji Rock (hoping it's '04, my first show). I know it's not '02 cause the bedsheet in front of the desk is gone. Does anyone remember when they were using the lights in the floor? That may be a clue. Nothing out of ordinary for HBHG. But it has a few great in crowd shots. And the crowd noise is spot on as you are able to hear the "here we go!" chants in time. Now if I could track down this dvd again. Has a few great segments with joe strummer and iwamano kiyoshiri.
