Any thoughts from the younger (30 and younger) forum members about Brian Wilson / Beach Boys?

Good or bad, I would like to hear if he/they have had any relevancy in your lives.

Well in the case nobody feels motivated to answer, I think anyone with an inkling of interest should make a mental bookmark to check out some of their work. And more specifically aim for their more melancholic work as it might unveil the cathartic bond that so many people have with their music. Maybe you'll even find a common ground with your elders, god only knows we need more of that these days (see what i did there?).

Anyway here are a few of my favorites:

and of course the highly acclaimed:

It's your time to rest, Brian. Thanks for all the amazing music.

Well you ruled some of us out by age!

I like this one. It's a groove. It's also too short, but I guess that's a compliment.

I bought this white label back in '99/'00.
Discogs: South Coast - Surfin'

At the time, these sort of bootleg/mashups were quite exciting. You knew they probably weren't legal and that you were getting something a little bit 'unique' that some people would never own or even know about. This was in the days before Soundcloud and YouTube.

I guess the "South Coast" moniker was a reference to Fatboy Slim and the Big Beat Boutique - based in Brighton on the UK's south coast.
Listening back now, it would be better without the "funk soul brother" sample. And I'd like the vocal to be less chopped up and repetitious. But there was a good idea in here somewhere. And back in '99, Big Beat was still hanging in there, so it wasn't as 'naff' to do a big beat remix as it would be now.

IT'S MORNING TIME!

I would be remiss if I didn't reshare this classic which showed up in my YouTube feed again:

There's a lot of Beach Boys I really don't have much respect for but Good Vibrations, Pet Sounds, and the Smile Sessions are some of the most gorgeous statements in the history of pop music as an art.

Hearing The Orb put God Only Knows over Little Fluffy Clouds in Chicago in 2015 was pretty fucking transcendent.

Ozzy's dead

It's 237!  That's also the best number because it would make you the Turbo Nutter of the deluxe owners

I had to check it, I didn't want to believe it.
Fuck... there goes Ozzy
I can hit cheeky lizards if I want!

Supertramp's Rick Davies passed away couple weeks ago. Everyone should hear this if they haven't:

Robert Redford also passed, and though I'm not particularly a big fan of his acting career, he's was the co-founder of the Sundance Film Festival that was the upstart for many successful directors and independent films.

Oh man, he made lots of great movies. I've watched a few of his 21st century offerings in the past couple of years and been impressed that A) he kept working and B) he retained an easy charm and a...handsomeness even as his face got craggier. I thought we might see him continue into his 90's but alas 89 was where it ended.
2017's The Discovery is worth a watch, he was in Avengers End game in 2019, as well as the Winter Soldier in 2014. Lions For Lambs (2007) with Streep and Criuse was decent, as was The Company You Keep (2012). Spy Game (2001) opposite Brad Pitt is worth a watch too.
But Redford's heyday was the '60s and '70s I guess. Too long ago for most of us here to remember - even me! But it's been fun catching up with stuff like this:

Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid (1969)
The Candidate (1972)
The Sting (1973)
The Great Gatsby (1974)
Three Days Of The Condor (1975). I caught this recently for the first time. It's good!
All The Presidents Men (1976) - Remember when presidents had shame?
The Natural (1984)
Sneakers (1992)
Indecent Proposal (1993). OK, I actually saw this when it came out. A little gaudy perhaps.

[Yeah I skipped over Out Of Africa; the media liked it but it's not for me.]

This guy was a legend. And yes, Sundance showed that he loved movies, not just money. RIP to a Hollywood great.

In other news, the non-singing half of 80s synthpop duo Blancmange has died. RIP Stephen Luscombe.

I previously posted their best known, sitar-tinged hit in Now Playing, but this slightly more serious track feels appropriate here.
