So you can walk up to someone in a German café and say "would you like to gobble my love bone?" and not get kicked out?
Totally normal conversation in any German café. You can also ask if anyone wanted some bite of your Sturmsack (storm sack) or Windbeutel (windbag) aka cream puff.

very similar, though the pastry is typically not split, but rather filling the pastry via a small hole with custard while using a piping bag.
Yeah, might be handier for mass distribution like supermarkets. Groceries do sell frozen mini party cream puffs - or Windbeutel (windbags) - like that, which normally are also cut in half and filled with whipped cream if you'd buy them at a bakery.

Supermarket éclair
They do look similar, although the icing looks more creamy. German éclairs usually have a chocolate/ couverture frosting so when you take a bite it cracks.

3. Fresh made éclairs from actual small store bakeries (sadly, fewer TRUE traditional bakeries by the day here in the US).
Oh, tell me about it. Privately owned bakeries are pretty much on retreat here as well due to costs and finding staff, and successors for retiring owners.

it just can't be beat. You pay the added cost, but you get a perfectly made pastry with love.
Hey, if you ever wanted to try something new in the kitchen, knowing you're pretty savvy in that department, those éclairs and cream puffs are relatively easy to make. And they taste just as good! You could surprise your family with some home made Bosco-lairs!

My family used to always host a Sunday night dinner (common old-school US tradition), and my Grandpa would always be over. Him being the eldest of the family, we would always serve his favorite desert...chocolate éclairs.
You guys sounds like a lovely bunch!
