Darren Emerson Returns to Underworld!

...would be my Daily Mail headline, if I had a music review column there. He's just done a solo remake of Dark Train for a re-release of Sasha and Digweed's Northern Exposure mix CD, which is out next month.

Unlike the Fluke tracks, this feels a bit inessential. It's just too close to the original with the drum machines beefed up a little, and the vocals are lackluster. I imagine it's a nice little treat to end Disc 2 with though.

The CD release will have an extra "dub mix" of reworks of tracks from the original set. Might get a downtempo Sasha/Digweed take on Dark Train, which could be interesting.

W.D.Y.K.A.G.?

I wondered what the purpose of that "2026 Remake" was. Agree that it felt largely unnecessary, but at least there seems to be somewhat of a reason for it existing!

Doesn't seem likely that Rick & Karl would refuse the original's use on the new LateNightTales release, right? So are they just throwing Darren a bone here?

Interestingly, when I saw this pop up on YouTube Music, it did prompt me to put on a bunch of Emerson remixes afterwards!

As someone who regularly checks the BBC Sounds app on a Saturday morning to see who has done this weeks' Essential Mix...
I also check the app on a Sunday to see which Classic Essential Mix has been uploaded, and at the moment the one that has my attention is Underworld (live-ish) and Above & Beyond @ Privilege, Ibiza 2010. I guess this was already on the internet but I hadn't listened, and the app just makes it so easy. This was clearly a Barking era (promotional) set.

Recent YT upload

...and if that disappears, here's a Soundcloud of the Underworld hour:

@Enjoyed The first of your three vids is "not available" for me, what is it?
As for GusGus, I bought that on 12" at the time as it was the only way to get the full length 6:58 original version. As you can see, there's a Medicine 8 remix on there but not the Emerson mix, so I'm not sure if I've heard that before. It's a nice dancefloor rework, although I think I still prefer the original.

This is the only YT upload of the 6:58 original that I can find.

@WhiteNoise thrilled to see you're familiar with the Daily Fail. A pro-Brexity rag that pretends to be a broadsheet. Yeah they would probably mislead on the Emerson/Underworld headline, if they were cool enough to know or care. I imagine they can tell us lots about Dua Lipa though...

It was the full length (9:26) version of Darren's remix of Fatboy Slim - Sunset (Bird of Prey)

Here's the slightly shorter version:

Great track. Great album. Underrated band (Arabian Horse, anyone?)

The Emerson remix is, at least for me, easily the best of the bunch. I like the Beginnerz remix too, but they mostly just be doing what they always do - make everything ever so slightly smoooother.
