Unreleased Chemicals

So a more formalized of this should be added to the wiki sometime, if we're starting it. Here's a text doc I compiled of unreleased stuff, gonna dump it here instead of sitting on it!

Unheard. Has been mentioned but no audio can be found of it.
Heard. Can be heard somewhere essentially in full.
Kinda Heard. Can be heard, but not in its original state (i.e. the way the unreleased Bjork remix turned into Dig Your Own Hole) or not in a clean environment (i.e. live audio recordings or in the background of a film).
Disputed. We either can't confirm it exists, or we can't confirm it's actually by The Chemical Brothers.

Songs:

Here Come The Drums
Unheard - Wholly unreleased and unfinished, though rumors of it keep popping up. The funny thing is it could have already been released under a different name and we would never know.

Problem/Question (aka The Animal Track)
Heard - Played live in 2005, updated version played in a few 2006 DJ sets, and pressed on a rare few records. Originally penciled in as EBW 8, but shelved due to "bassline issues" according to the band. One belongs to Justin Robertson, and another was obtained by Fake Blood who put a few seconds of it on a minimix in 2009.

Dopeness on a Pill
Unheard - Working title or unreleased track from the Exit Planet Dust sessions.

Just Dust
Unheard - Working title or unreleased track from the Exit Planet Dust sessions.

Just Say Yo
Unheard - Working title or unreleased track from the Exit Planet Dust sessions.

Superflash (Studio Version)
Heard - There's a live version on Don't Think, but there's a longer studio version they've been DJing with which hasn't turned up yet. It may never be released.

Electric Hands
Kinda Heard - One of two original songs made for the film Black Swan. It hasn't been released on it's own, but you can hear it in the film during a restaurant scene behind the dialog and sound effects. It's hard to tell if the track is what it is considering it isn't stated where the tracks are featured and we don't have anything to compare it to other than looking for the "Chemical" sound.

Danka Jane
Kinda Heard - The other original song made for the film Black Swan, it can reportedly be heard in the film directly after Nina Frequency. Only Tom is credited as the writer for Danka Jane and Electric Hands, despite The Chemical Brothers being credited as the performer of both. This and the RAR studios remix of I Break Horses marked the beginning of Ed's "school hiatus" and the period of solo work by Tom.

Contra
Unheard - a title found alongside Reflexion on a mastering portfolio, title was confirmed by Ed on Twitter and Tom called the track "still a work in progress". Maybe it's CHEMICAL, since it would have been mastered for DJing around that time but was still considered a work in progress and wasn't released until a year after BITE.

Life of Galileo Soundtrack
Mostly unheard - Tom Rowlands scored an experimental in-the-round production of Life of Galileo at the Young Vic, directed by Joe Wright (previous Vegetable Vision member and director of Hanna). Beyond a single trailer (which included new music alongside sounds from Music: Response) and a few videos taken during intermission (where a very Chemical Brothers sounding track, previously dropped in DJ sets and occasionally identified as "Here Come The Drums", played out), none of the soundtrack has been released and as the nature of theater is ephemeral, it may never be.

Trespass Against Us
Unheard / kinda unheard - Tom also scored the film Trespass Against Us, directed by Adam Smith (their longtime visual collaborator). An earlier version of the film score was composed which, according to Adam, sounded "very Chemical" and was actually rejected by Adam, who requested the film be re-composed with mostly acoustic instruments as a challenge to Tom. There are no plans on the table for a soundtrack release of the final version, and it's unknown if any of it - including the original "chemical" sounding score - will ever be released.

45 aka "Dirty Xylophones"
Heard, disputed - This is an unidentified track played during the 2019 Essential Mix at around 45:45 (hence the nickname). It can't be agreed if this is actually a Chemical Brothers song or not.

Gimme A Break [as Bonus Beats Orchestra]
Heard - very likely never to be released, this is a pile on of loads of classic and heavy sampled breakbeats following Bango in the 2019 Essential Mix in the grand tradition of Morning Lemon, (The Best Part of) Breaking Up, These Beats Are Made for Breakin, etc.

Drum Take 7 [credited as The Clapham Percussion Ensemble]
Heard - an unreleased song / tool played during the 2019 Essential Mix.

EMS Slide [credited as The Clapham Synthesizer Ensemble]
Heard - an unreleased song / tool played during the 2019 BBC Moments Mix.

Peter the Bellboy
Unheard - a title dropped by Tom as a working title for something.

Bert in Africa
Unheard - another title dropped by Tom, who knows what this is.

Bukui Psychedelico DEMO
Heard and disputed - a track found on the same Rowlands Audio Research Soundcloud as the (seemingly) legit edit of Lack of Love. It doesn't sound like any existing track, even Direct Buki,

Unreleased Versions of Existing Songs (the ones we know of):

Hot Acid Rhythm 2
Unheard - Many official sources mentioned a version of the track recorded with rapper Eve, but it was never released.

Alive Alone (Coconut Dub)
Heard - A stripped down version  originally recorded in 1994 during the album sessions, which "nearly made it on the album", but was abandoned in favor of the released version. It was broadcast on Colin Murray's In The Company Of... show in 2007, in full with a little talking over the intro and outro.

Don't Fight Control
Heard - The Chems put together a special mashup of Out Of Control and Primal Scream's Don't Fight It Feel It for DJing around 2006, which later made it into their live shows, and a flawless copy of it leaked online late 2007.

It Began in Afrika (Early Version aka Pioneer Skies Drums Version)
Heard - It Began in Afrika began as a radically different version sampling the same drums as used in Pioneer Skies. The Chems played this out at a number of DJ sets in 2001-2003 and it can be heard in a few bootlegs from that time.

Afrika (Edit Version)
Heard - another early version of It Began In Afrika, this one much more similar to the later released version but with some changes to the outro, general structure, and some noises that were cut. Found on a Virgin promo CDr backed with "Reggae for Real", which is the Singles/Tomb Raider version of Galaxy Bounce under a different name.

Nina Frequency (Alternate version of Don't Think)
Kinda Heard - The film Black Swan features an alternate version of Don't Think in the club scene, with additional sounds added into an early part of the song. The full alternate version hasn't been released or played live, but it can be heard in-film behind sound effects, and in a promotional video, which fans have used to edit together a full "Black Swan" version of the track.

Hanna Original Score (versions heard in film)
Heard - Most of the songs on the Hanna sountrack album were altered from how they sounded in the film, resulting in a much better album experience but leaving a lot of songs and versions officially unreleased. However, before the film's release a few tracks surfaced on a promotional site for the film, and a "For Your Consideration" CD was discovered and ripped by a fan a year after the film's release, featuring the soundtrack exactly as it appreared in film. Only three things can be heard in-film only - a version of Hanna vs Marissa with a 2 second synth solo added, a quick Chemical-ized edit of In The Hall of the Mountain King, and the Devil song mix during the bar scene. See my Comprehensive Extra & Alternate Hanna Material compilation for all of this.

Life Is Sweet (Extended Version / Early Version)
Heard - On their 1995 Essential Mix, mostly the same but with different mastering, a shorter intro, a longer bridge with extra radio transmission samples, and an extended outro.

Get Up On It Like This / Life Is Sweet (Mix 1) / Tow Truck Mash
Heard - The first part of the Unreleased BBC Mix 1996, aka the KDGE Dallas mix (it was a mix shipped out to a number of radio stations), ends with an extended Delik-esque jam incorperating early segments of Get Up On It Like This, the sample and beat from Dynamix II's Just Give The DJ A Break (sampled in Life Is Sweet (Mix 1)), and unfinished parts of their remix of Sabres of Paradise, which may have started as an original Chems demo before moving on to be completed as a remix.

Loops of Fury (Unknown Version)
Heard - A very different early version of Loops of Fury can be heard in the second part of the KDGE Dallas mix aka Unreleased BBC Mix, after Da Funk.

Base 6 (Early Version)
Kinda Heard - An early version with a different structure and electro beats, it was mashed up with Dig Your Own Hole in many 1997 shows.

Hey Boy Hey Girl (Breakbeat Version) (aka Anti-Nazi Version)
Heard - Found at the end of the Anti-Nazi mix, and in various DJ sets they've done over the years. It's an early version of Hey Boy Hey Girl mixed with Another Place Another Time by Frankie Bones & Lenny Dee, What You Waitin' For? by the Jungle Brothers and occasionally Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Reprise by the Beatles as its outro, put together in 1997.

Hey Boy Hey Girl (1997 Live Version) (aka "Mind: Response")
Kinda Heard - The live version played during 1997 encores is its own song and isn't mixed with either of the songs in the above version. It also adds the vocoder from Music:Response as well as beats relocated from Not Another Drugstore. Some bootlegs consider the second half of to be an early verison of Music: Response but it's really just a continuation of the same track. This and the "Breakbeat Version" represent a completely different direction the song could have taken before the Gatecrasher influences entered.

Hey Boy Hey Girl (Earliest Demo)
Unheard, maybe - The "earliest demo" of Hey Boy Hey Girl, which may have been the above break-beat version, something similar to the live version, or something completely different, was going to be broadcast on the same 2007 Colin Murray show that the Coconut Dub and Fight the Drabs mixes were played on. But during the show Tom and Ed deemed it "crap" and changed their minds about playing it. Murray admitted he tried to secretly hang onto the CD brought in by Tom and Ed so he could broadcast the demo later, but Tom nicked the CD on his way out.

Scale (Early Version)
Kinda heard and disputed - On the Osaka 1997 set, after the early version of Hey Boy Hey Girl, there's a long jam with a rising synth pattern and a start-stop beat sequence. It's speculated to be an early version of Scale because of Scale's rising synths, there's no evidence for or against this other than the timing being right.

Hold Tight London (Mix 2)
Unheard and disputed - Sneakerbeater listed a Mix 2 of Hold Tight London in his bonus disc wishlist for a third greatest hits collection. Sneaks might know something we don't, but it might just be wishful thinking based on the rather different live version.

The Pills Won't Help You Now (Ambient Version)
Heard - Found on the If You Start Hating You're Out of Control mix, drastically stripped down and shorter version of the original.

Let Me In Mate (Demo Versions)
Unheard - @ChemBros tweeted a picture of a found DAT tape that had two different mixes of Let Me In Mate along with three mixes of an unspecified song with vocals (probably either Life Is Sweet or Alive Alone).

Surface To Air (Guitar Tuned To D)
Heard -Early version that plays a little longer than the original, doesn't feature any vocals, is unmastered and sports a different breakdown section. Released in 2004 ahead of the album on a rare promo CD and was broadcast at least once on KEXP in 2004.

Further (Unmixed Version)
Mostly unheard - Promised by Tom, the digital MP3 copy of Further (available with a code included in the vinyl copies of the album) was supposed to be a version with no transitions between songs, but the record company uploaded a low quality 160kbps copy of the normal CD album. Tom tried to get this fixed but it was never corrected. Missing would be endings to Snow, K+D+B, and possibly Horsepower; a beginning to Wonders of the Deep; and a not-crossfaded intro/outro to Another World and Dissolve. Escape Velocity is available on its own in an etched vinyl as well as Swoon (no differences) on its single, and the unmixed ending to Dissolve can be heard on the vinyl copy of Further.

This is Not a Game / Taste of Honey (Third Version)
Unheard - A third version of these related tracks was recorded with another artist at one point, according to Tom. We speculate that a full version with Lorde was recorded, with just the "There it is" vocal samples remaining in the officially released version.

Radiate (Techno Version)
Unheard - A longer dancier version of Radiate exists, according to Tom.

C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L (Multiple Early Versions)
Kinda heard - Multiple versions of this track were tested in DJ sets from 2012-2015 before the song's final release in 2016, with significant different sections and synth lines. Many videos of these versions are still available online, but many have been lost too.

Eve of Destruction (Early Version)
Kinda heard - An early version of Eve of Destruction dropped in DJ sets ahead of No Geography, featuring vocals that did not end up on the final track and different use of the "maybe I'll find a friend" sample, among other changes. Some of these elements showed up on "Eve of Dubstruction" but in a different manner, this exact early version is still unreleased.

Got To Keep On (Early Version)
Kinda heard - Early versions of Got To Keep On also dropped in DJ sets featured an instrumental bridge that was cut from the final version. This bridge showed up on Fantai, so this one's... basically released, if anyone wants to put together a fan edit like Nina Frequency.

The Universe Sent Me (Alternate Essential Mix Instrumental)
Heard - Without the humming vocal added to the commercially released version, and with some additional sounds introduced in the mix. Heard only on the 2019 Essential Mix.

No Geography (Extended Mix) (and other NG-era songs)
Unheard - When asked if they would release No Geography (the song) as a single, Ed mentioned the song was "a shortened version" and that they "might do some extended versions of some of the tracks that are mixed together or a little bit shorter" next time they were in the studio.

Music:Response (Live from Orinico Mix)
Heard - the final track on the 2019 Essential Mix is a jam with the Music:Response vocoder, probably taken from the album's recording sessions based on the title. A little foreshadowing for the 20th Anniversary release.

Unreleased Remixes (and notable DJ edits):

The Charlatans - Feel The Pressure (Chemical Brothers Acid Remix)
Kinda heard - Dropped in a number of DJ sets around 2003 (the full version can be heard on a Centro-Fly bootleg) and heard in studio quality only for a short while in the 2007 Facebook Mix. A very different and way less acid version of the remix was released as Feel The Pressure (Chemical Brothers Dub).

I Break Horses - Unknown (any number of songs from the album Hearts)
Unheard - According to Simon Raymonde, Tom did three mixes of tracks from her album, and only the mix of Hearts was released. Simon is apparently sitting on the other two, which likely will never be officially released.

Bjork - Hyperballad
Kinda heard - Bjork rejected the remix on account of her "aversion to slap bass", but the Chemical Brothers reworked the remix, sans any Bjork, and turned it into Dig Your Own Hole. We still don't know what the Bjork version would have sounded like, chucking an acapella of Hyperballad onto Dig Your Own Hole yields odd results.

The Stone Roses - Begging You
Unheard - A remix which "had potential", but was shelved mid-way through after The Stone Roses changed their minds.

Massive Attack - Teardrop
Heard - an unfinished demo of the remix was debuted in Tom's Pete Tong Radio 1 Takeover set.

Oasis - Unknown 94/95 song(s)
Unheard and disputed - Noel asked Tom and Ed to remix "a Balearic-inspired track" of his in early 1994, but later changed his own mind about it. Years later, Tom and Ed admitted to turning down an opportunity to remix Wonderwall due to their inexperience in 1994. The Chemical Brothers played Oasis' Live Forever in a dj mix in 1995 with a drum loop introducing the studio track, which maybe represented an extremely early attempt at remixing it. Confusingly, this drum-loop intro was bootlegged as a "Chemical Brothers edit" of Live Forever. In summary, The Chemical Brothers once slapped a drum loop on Live Forever and turned down remixing Wonderwall, and probably neither remix exists.

Sabres of Paradise - Tow Truck (early version)
Heard - While the original remix was definitely released, a short early version of it can be heard towards the end of the KDGE Dallas mix in a sort of "beat suite" mixed with parts of Get Up On It Like This and Dynamic II's Give The DJ A Break. It's very likely the remix started as an early Exit Planet Dust track before becoming the Tow Truck remix.

Boyz Noize - Shadowbreaker (Chems Edit)
Heard - Coachella 2009, notable because it features loads of added Chems sounds, many from released songs (The Big Jump, TSU).

The Doves - Kingdom of Rust (Tom Rowlands Remix)
Heard - Played as part of a Chemical Brothers DJ mix and interview broadcast on 6Music on Christmas evening, 2015. Tom was involved with the recording of another The Doves song, 10:03, on the Kingdom of Rust album.

Charles B - Lack Of Love (Lack of Acid / Tom Rowlands Edit)
Heard - An edit dropped in Born in the Echoes-era DJ sets and for a while after, and played somewhat in full during the Chemical Brothers One Mix for Apple Music. The full version apparently leaked on a Soundcloud titled Rowlands Audio Research and seems to be the real deal, though there's always a chance it's an incredibly accurate fan edit.

"Pumisher's Erection Song"
Kinda Heard and disputed - Don't ask about the name. A unidentified old school style track dropped in multiple DJ sets before the release of Born In The Echoes. Uses the same voice as in the NYE Remix of Midnight Madness and has some Chemical qualities to it, but for the most part seems to be a DJ edit of an existing track which we can't ID.

Miscellaneous:

Loops of Fury ft. Joe Satriani
Unheard - on May 11, 1997, Joe Satriani recorded a DAT tape of himself soloing some hott lixx on top of Loops of Fury and sent it, unsolicited, to Tom and Ed in suggestion of a collaboration. It was turned down, but they've kept the tape. Tom says "I think that's one for the Chemical Brothers Anthology box set."

Elektron, Steps, and Wizard
Heard - for unknown reasons, The Chemical Brothers released 3 synth sounds as ringtones. They're low quality but raw. Elektron uses a sound from EBW7, Wizard a sound from EBW9, and Steps a synth similar to the ones used in Scale.

Delta FX, Hey Riff, Bonus Beats Orchestra 94, etc...
Heard - these are synth / drum elements from various released songs that have shown up and been titled like this on DJ sets. I wouldn't really call these "unreleased" songs, but the line between these and tools like EMS Slide and Gimme a Break is pretty blurry so I may as well mention em.

Well that's quite the reply! Thanks WN. Hopefully poeple won't forget about my original track ID question now that we have this meaty post to get our teeth into.

Bosco and Geoff can corroborate  ;). This was after North Coast 2015 - another story that needs to be told.
Never for money, always for love.

It came out in conversation with Tom when I made mention I really enjoyed the new album, particularly 'Radiate'. Where Tom then explained there was an alternate "techno" version of the track. I then asked if this was something we would eventually be able to hear. He quickly said "no".

Also, Whitenoise, excellent fucking work.

This is an amazing list. Thanks WN.

Hope nobody minds but I moved it here to The Social.

Or a DL Link to the KDGE Dallas Mix?

EDIT:
I forgot to mention Hey boy hey girl/music:Response inspired me to make a collab track, Blackmailer, with a public friend ,which will be a sorta tribute to that.

Hi Kevin!

Awesome, thanks!

If the unreleased Massive Attack remix made it onto the list, I guess it should also include the fucking brilliant remix of "Kingdom of Rust" by The Doves (included in the 2015 Christmas Mix).

Forgot that! Adding that in along with the mythical unmixed version of Further.

I've just discovered (throw this in the "did this slip by us" topic) that Tom Rowland arranged The Doves' song 10:03 on the Kingdom of Rust album:

Is it worth adding in Life of Galileo and Trespass (x2) stuff?
Also there are all those re-edits that have appeared in DJ sets over the years. I guess it would be a real pain to put that list together. Maybe something for a separate thread if anyone is feeling brave enough.

Well if we're guessing on tracks we already know, my guess is probably the same as this from Inchem. The track hasn't changed during the 2017 DJ sets (so it was "in the can" and mastered) and I wonder if it was actually put together around the same time as Nothing But Pleasure. The Lyrics/poetry have a counterculture vibe about them that might suit the name Contra.

Absolutely. This is a list I put together in 2015 (before I posted, it still had entries for "Gayvalnize" (Go) and "Gay Disco Horse Power" (Sometimes I Feel So Deserted)) so it hasn't been updated.

Down for listing all the edits, but I think we'll have to draw a line between a DJ edit / mashup and a proper unreleased remix. There's definitely a difference between the Shadowbreaker edit and the Thunder / Losing Control / Mother Earth mashup. We'd have a lot to add and a lot of lines to draw.

I meant to post a full review of that entire summer, from seeing them on my bday at Sonar to North Coast and afterwards, but I completely overthought my review thanks to all the hype build up for my first live Chems review, and time got away from me pretty much instantly after that point.

Still mean to post it. It'll be good! And it just occurred to me to serialize it into parts, I think that might be easier...

Not an early version actually, even though it's crazy different. They released It Doesn't Matter as Electronic Battle Weapon 1 a month before that show, Lollipop was late July and EBW1 was June 1st.

The improv between Get Up On It and Electrobank at that show though, that's something weird, might be worth listing. There's also a wild chord progression they played before The Reel in lieu of Got Glint at Open Air Field 2002 which could be something, and a weird drum beat that's featured in a few 2005 shows during Hoops that's never shown up anywhere else, and at a London 2005 show they jammed with it alone for a minute or two. But they're not really fully developed songs.

All Rights Reversed (Fight The Drabs Mix) (Broadcast Version)
Unheard and disputed - The Fight The Drabs Mix makes use of a sample or re-creation of the synth line from Kraftwerk's Numbers, and based on comments made around the time of the show, it's possible the version broadcast on Collin Murray's show featured more liberal sampling from it. No known recordings exist.

Just to be clear with this one - we're talking about a version that's different to the 'In The Company of The Chemical Brothers' one?
